Two Tech Executives Get So Drunk on Plane That it Forces Crew to Turn Around Halfway Through Flight

Because Research in Motion’s stocks have fallen by 77 percent since the beginning of 2011, and because they’ve been getting trounced by competitors in the tablet market, one would assume that executives working for the company would at least try to represent it well.

Two Tech Executives get so Drunk on Plane that it Forces Crew to Turn Around Halfway Through Flight

This is not the direction stocks are supposed to head.

One would expect that responsible and professional executives would try to calm investors who have been shaken up by failing stocks and rumors of bankruptcy by reinforcing confidence in the brand. Building and promoting a likeable public image would be a great place to start.

But then again, we are talking about RIM; nothing seems to be going right for them this year.

Allegedly, two Canadian RIM executives, George Campbell and Alexander Wilson, got incredibly inebriated and raucous on a flight from Toronto to Beijing, forcing the pilot to ground the plane in Vancouver, reports the Toronto Star.

Two Tech Executives get so Drunk on Plane that it Forces Crew to Turn Around Halfway Through FlightWe knew it wasn’t just a stereotype . . .

How drunk were they? This might give you an idea: even though the plane was already north of Alaska, the two execs were drunk enough that the pilots actually turned the plane around so that they could land it in Vancouver. A person briefed on the matter who was not authorized to speak to the media, said the plane was actually much closer to Beijing, writes the New York Times.

“The airline decided the plane should return to Canada because of concerns that Chinese law enforcement officials would impound the aircraft, a situation that would have cost Air Canada a substantial amount of lost revenue,” the Times reports.

One passenger said that Campbell and Wilson were “fighting” with the flight attendants, prompting the crew to subdue them. Both men were eventually separated and placed in plastic handcuffs.

Campbell, 45, and Wilson, 38, “simply weren’t listening to any direction that the flight crew was giving them,” a Canadian official told the Toronto Star.

“They weren’t necessarily fighting. They were just simply being unruly in their drunken state,” said Cpl. Sherrdean Turley in an interview.

When they finally landed, the two men were arrested, fined $35,878 apiece, given a year’s probation, and banned from any contact with Air Canada during that time.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that they have also been suspended from their jobs.

The other 312 passengers had a lousy go of it as well, notes the Star. Because the direct flight was a 13-hour one, the interruption meant the total time to get to Beijing exceeded flight crew safety regulations—so a new crew had to be called in, during which time the travelers were put up in a hotel. They ultimately arrived 18 hours late, reports Newser.

A RIM spokesman only had this to say regarding the situation: “Based on the limited information available at this time, RIM has suspended the individuals involved pending further investigation.”

Of course, whenever a story like this shows up in the news, it might be prudent to ask whether the passengers involved were legitimately unruly or whether the flight crew was overreacting:

Who ever said immoral actions don’t affect everyone else? When I was a boy, momma taught me to be good especially in public mainly because she wanted to instill in me not to be a burden on others through creating a fuss through being rude, unruly and even fighting. We’ve lost that as a culture. We no longer care about others rights and perceptions of us, we only care about our own self centered issues. Focus is entirely on the individuals wants, desires and expectation that we be authentic people all the time meaning that if your having a bad day, don’t keep that inside, let it out and share it with everyone else. We can’t even tell these people to shut up without creating some sort of terrorist scene and being arrested ourselves. If you acted this badly when I was young, there would be people right there to put you in your place and the police would not get involved. We are far from that now.

I think the problem here is China. Air Canada was worried that those two would not make it through customs, as well they should be. China very well might have impounded them, and then the plane to make a point to AirCanada not to bring inebriated persons to their country. However, If I was an Exec of AirCanada I would immediatly issue new flight protocol that provides incentive for stewardesses to refuse drinks to people who are clearly becoming inebriated. Possibly I would fire the attendents who were responsible for serving that quantity of alcohol.

Canuck’s are funny that way. They are perhaps, the drinkingest people on the planet. I did 20+ years as an airline pilot, and worked for an airline that served free booze. Invariably, as we proceeded southbound, the liquor miniatures went first, followed by the beer, then the wine. By the time we crossed the US border, the booze carts were always completely emptied.

The problem, of course, is that they had to spend the rest of the trip boozeless. What to do for the next two hours? I guess the gluttons had to concentrate on sobering up. From what the inflight folks told us, it could be unpleasant at times.

When I bartended through college it was in part my responsibility to keep people from over drinking or I could be fined. Where is the accountability on the flight crew? OH I forgot, Canada is full of people who think that nothing is their fault, and are not accountable for anything. Hello Future.

Sorry Saranda. But that IS the way most Canadians are. I know a lot of Canadians and the most prevalent attitudes are 1.) an entitlement attitude. and 2.) an “anything an american says about canadians has to be wrong because americans are just so ignorant of our culture” attitude. But I have found that just about everything that we as americans take as a stereotype of Canadians is actually pretty accurate. You guys need to work on being less offended. The whole dang WORLD makes fun of Americans and their assessments are far harsher than the quirky things we make fun of you Canucks for. And we openly admit our guilt!! But, there is a well made and unfortunate point in the statement that most americans now also have an entitlement mentality. We have allowed our feminine sides (not necessarily women, but the feminine sides of men and of women) to take entirely too much control in our society. We baby everything and everyone and because of that we are a bunch of weak petulant children. I say we re-institute spanking for bad behavior and telling your child they suck if they lose the soccer game. It will build some much needed drive to succeed and win. And we should make kids WORK for their allowances, or just let them enter the working world, it will build responsibility and respect for others.

@matt I’d say you know little of Canadians or their freedom loving position and again entitlement mentality is not as accurate as you make it. I both lived in the US brought up in Maine since 1969 and recently moved back to Canada. Brother they are more free then you are, not as bogged down with government intrusion or regulations as back in the states. There is a larger majority not holding their hands out then the US population now up to 57% are currently getting entitlements and growing.

My feeling is I hold not grudge on being made fun of it’s when one claims to know and perpetuates a myth of a culture that disturbs me. Anecdotal evidence doesn’t make your position true, does it? We can still display a nativity at Christmas on pubic land, or a cross, we have what can only be called “Christian” holidays, like good Friday off and sanctioned by the “state” and I don’t see groups of leftist crying fowl.
I’m not sure who has an entitlement mind set, the Canadians or Americans? I’d say the Americans are now creeping in front and will lose all the freedoms once guaranteed by their constitution and fought for by my grandfather and uncles on both sides of the border.
The most disparaging remark was the script under the picture of the McKenzie brothers “We knew it wasn’t just a stereotype”. That wasn’t needed, I’ve heard of hundreds of planes being redirected back to Bangor international for drunk behavior, and it didn’t add one thing on the entire nation.

I believe it only perception that the majority of Americans (the 99%) have that entitlement attitude due to the news media being controlled by progressives and the demagoguery of the Democratic Party. I might be wrong, but I believe most Americans still believe in self-reliance and personal responsibility. You all had better hope I am right.

I find it interesting that flight crews are now discredited just as “victims” of sexual harassment have been.

It’s no surprise that women make up stories to achieve maximum damage and obtain maximum financial reward, but I would think that flight crews would have been professional enough to resist the urge to be overly dramatic and as a result, become a discredited and laughed-at profession.

Women who say they have been inappropriate with Cain, Air Canada Flight crews who feel threatened. How very sad.

If you claim a man has harassed you in the workplace, you are a fool. If you turn an airplane around and there isn’t an actual gun on board, you are a fool. If you claim that racism is somehow holding you back in any way, you are a fool.

We, as a society, are far too concerned with “sexual harrassment” and not nearly concerned enough with “rape”. Sexual harrassment is usually just unwanted flirting. And guess what? If you are a woman you are going to live your entire life putting up with flirting, AS WELL YOU SHOULD because you want the man to know where hes taking you on a date right? you want him to initiate the kiss right? you want him to take charge right? well, if we are the ones taking charge all the time, then, when we like a girl we HAVE to pursue. If we are fined for pursuing then your gonna get a culture with a lot of unsatisfied women and a lot of ball-less men. RAPE on the other hand, is about power and dominance and violence. Rape is something perpetrated by hardened criminals, not by your average joe in the workplace. But now, in society, we baby all the criminals and try to “rehabilitate” them, instead of simply executing them. like 1% of them are ever rehabilitated, so really, what is the point in keeping them around? Does it make any sense to be lenient with these criminals and then turn around and fine some guy who is just flirting? Or allow some whore who WILLINGLY slept with Cain AND accepted money for it to come back and harass him? Is it appropriate for us to be extra harsh on these people and insanely, ridiculously lenient with actual rapists? society has been turned upside down my friends.

Landing in China would have been a Legal Nightmare for both the Airline and The Drunk Passengers. Having worked and lived in Both Countries, I have to say Canada is still the land of the Free and not corrupted by Greed. Canada is a country that respects liberties and the rule of law. The cities are clean, the people are friendly and you don’t have a murder a minute. You feel safe, and yes people work hard and play hard. The company I worked was down the street from RIM and when the execs would take me out, they would drink and cuss, no political correctness. The next morning back to work, no excuses, no apologies. Very few people live off the government, and food stamps are unheard of. So get your facts straight.

Technically, they could have been seemly sober when they boarded the plane, but with altitude alcohol in the blood stream increases the inebriation of people. In addition, if they had another drink during the serving period, that contributed to their condition.

Yeah, I’d rather have the pilot kick them off rather than blow chunks.

Also, I think passengers in this situation should file suit against these two just for the delay they caused. I am not one to advocate frivolous suits, but they not only cost the airline money, but they may have prevented numerous passengers from missing important deadlines because of their antics. What if a passenger was flying to Beijing to attend a funeral or a wedding and they missed it because of these two yahoo’s.

Stop blaming others. It is a thought process such as yours that fuels the OWS generation. Ok so now we are going to limit the amount of drinks someone can have on a plane (never happen; magins to good for the airlines) because stupid idiots can’t act as mature adults. Once again a perfect example of the few causing problems for the masses. I say impose heavy fines on anyone requiring an aircraft to be diverted (BTW taking off and langing use an extensive amount of fuel) included in those fines should be compensation of $1,000/per passanger per hour for the time lost, plus the additional cost to the airline for fuel and airport for handling the unscheduled flight. This is how we get people to act responsibly and be accountable for their actions. Get a Clue!

Alcohol is given to much credit as a “safe” drug.

Too much credit as safe? Have you ever heard what MADD puts out?

It’s the ABUSE of alcohol. Unfortunately, use easily becomes abuse to some.

I got run over by a pickup truck when I was 13, that went off the road, driven by a drunk driver who claimed he never saw me or knew he hit me even though I busted out one set of headlights and dented the hood as I rolled up and over the hood and flew off the cab. Hit and run – but others saw this and turned him in. This happened when drunkenness was an acceptable excuse for bad behavior. (oh, so-and-so beat up his wife? well, he didn’t mean it, he was drunk, so it’s OK. And TV shows portrayed drunken behaviors as innocent and humorous; i.e. the Jackie Gleason Show) Nothing happened to the drunk driver but I spent the next 10 years recovering from injuries. By the way, I was blamed for BEING THERE by my parents! No one blamed the drunk driver.

My parents went through their “alcoholic years” while I was going through adolescence and just weren‘t there for me and didn’t protect me from my older brothers. So, I grew up and learned to get along without them. They regretted that years later when I simply moved away and made my own life and we all drifted apart. By the time they sobered up I was long, long, gone. I’m glad drunkenness is socially unacceptable now.
