HONOLULU — Two women at a remote Kauai beach at Na Pali Coast State Park were rescued after a tour helicopter spotted “S.O.S.” written in the sand.
The Navy says an aircrew was training off the west coast of Kauai when they were notified about the S.O.S.
Thursday morning. The Naval aviators saw the distress message and flashes from a mirror. A Navy helicopter and a search-and-rescue swimmer were sent to rescue the women.
One of the women was ill and injured. Both were taken Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.
Kauai Visitors Bureau executive director Sue Kanoho says the remote beach is only accessible by hiking or from the water. She added that it was raining heavily in the area the night before.

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 11:51pmI am the rescue crewman who picked these girls up. One girl was in diabetic shock and had an infection in her foot. There was no way she was hiking 11 miles out. They are both okay now. It is nice to see the positive comments on here. US Navy Rescue Swimmers! “So Other May Live”!!!

Posted on April 11, 2011 at 12:37amMuch respect to you guys. You guys got out there fast. And yes aint no way they would have hiked 11 miles back out. When I was in high school my friends and I used to hunt out there all the time so I know what its like..

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 3:42pmhahahaha I’m the helicopter tour pilot that called the SOS in to the the PMRF Naval Base control tower . WOW! I didn’t know it was going to make the blaze. In that area it’s very remote, and theres a lot of hippies, and I‘m sure they them selves don’t like the military, but boy are they happy for them now..

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 11:47pmHey DONROW,
I am the rescue crewman who picked these girls up. It’s crazy that this is getting so much attention. The girl who was hurt was in diabetic shock and had an infection in her foot. They are okay now. I’m waiting for someone to post the video of the rescue. There were a lot of tourists on the beach recording it.

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 10:25amI thank and give praise to the rescue team, who saved lives as they are hired to do. How novel is that, they are doing there jobs properly. We could use people like that in Washington, as for the victims, Hawaii can be very dangerous. You both are very lucky, hope you learned a valuable lesson about life and Americans. These rescuers didn`t hesitate, to help you, hope you don`t hesitate to help others. Please don`t forget a GENEROUS DONATION to your rescuers, they did SAVE YOUR LIVES !!! I doubt any other country would do the same, especially in the time frame!! The victims owe them alot for their welfare

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 3:08amGood thing it was a STATE park. If it was Federal it might have been closed and they would have died because the Republicans hate women, young people, hikers, the stranded, fish, water, vacationers and helicopters..

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 1:23amPerhaps,they were commenting on “hope and change” or the media or the gov’t or the economy with their SOS. Which could mean – same old…awww, never mind.

Posted on April 10, 2011 at 9:33pmHey Fly-Over.. Yeah, there are a couple of shacks on the beach there, but it’s about an 11 mile hike into that spot. The only access is by foot, boat or helicopter.
