WASHINGTON (AP) — The unemployment rate fell to a two-year low of 8.8 percent in March and companies added workers at the fastest two-month pace since before the recession began.
The Labor Department says the economy added 216,000 new jobs last month, offsetting layoffs a local governments. Factories, retailers, education, health care and an array of professional and financial services expanded payrolls.
Private employers, the backbone of the economy, drove nearly all of the gains. They added 230,000 jobs last month, on top of 240,000 in February. It was the first time private hiring topped 200,000 in back-to-back months since 2006 – more than a year before the recession started.
The unemployment rate dipped from 8.9 percent in February to 8.8 percent in March. The rate has fallen a full percentage point over the last four months, the sharpest drop since 1983.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 2:16pmI went to a job fair at my college yesterday, it was a total waste of time, gas and money.
I talked to several large companies that claim they will be hiring a lot of people in the next 3 to 6 months. The only problem is, they can’t tell you how many, what jobs will be available or what positions will be open. They can’t tell you exactly when the hiring will be taking place or anything that a person would need to know about getting a job, so why are they having a job fair, it doesn’t make sense.
I also talked to another thirty something college student that went to a job fair at NC state a couple months ago, and he said he got a little more details but he said it seemed the companies are more interested in the new graduates and the pay was very low compared to historic pay ranges in these fields. He talked to the same companies I talked to yesterday and he said he basically got the same information which was basically nothing.
All they wanted people to do is go online and offer all your information for free, even though they can not tell you anything about getting a job. Of course I talked to several classmates including me that had put their online applications in for months, we went because that is the only way to get any face time with a company these days. I think the internet was the worst thing ever for finding a job, and now they have all these test and personality test that have nothing to do with the job. I had one test that ask me if I thought it was ok to steal from the company, fight a co worker over a disagreement, take products because I felt I was being under compensated and about 20 other questions like this. What a freaking world we live in, sometimes I think the internet is the worst thing that could have happened to the industry.
I believe they are getting some kind of credit or gov funds for doing these job fairs, the only companies I talked to that were actually hiring anyone is the medical field, and I was told there are a lot of people in the med field that are retiring, so that makes jobs open.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 5:48pmHere is a nice comparison for the conservatives who blog here and who only listen to other conservatives: US vs. UK.
The UK did all the things guys like Niall Fergusson said that they should do. They entered an austerity program, they avoided the larger stimulus program undertaken in the US, they resisted raising taxes but just cut spending, they reduced public union powers and cut lots of government workers. The result? They are experiencing a double-dip recession with GDP flagging and unemployment rising.
The US did all of the things that Paul Krugman said that they should do, although more slowly and in smaller steps that he would have done. They used the federal government to deficit spend, they had the Fed rescue the banks, they flooded the crisis with cheap money, they used stimulus spending, they send money to the states to protect employment both in the private and public sectors. Niall Fergusson warned two years ago that this would certainly lead to hyperinflation very quickly. it hasn’t. Instead, the US is slowly returning to sustainable growth. Granted, it will take a lot of time to come out of this crisis, just as every other 90 year flood has taken on average 7 years to recover from.
But make no mistake. The conservatives got this one wrong. And the Keynesians and progressives got it right. Fiscal discipline is important, but you don’t undertake it when your economy is on the ropes. That is the quickest recipe for disaster. Just look at the US in 1937. Or the UK today. Thank God it was the US and not the UK that chose to listen to the smart guys.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 5:51pmAnd to those who argue that the tax cut extension was the reason. You are fooling yourself. There is no corresponding improvement in the economy that correlates with changes or extensions in tax policy. However, the implementation of the stimulus package marked the bottom of the stock market and the moment that the second order change in employment turned positive. You can only credit taxes if you are not looking at the data. Ignorance is bliss for Republicans. Thankfully, we had Democrats who use empirical data to make smart policy decisions. No wonder Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s Republican partner, wrote in his most recent shareholder letter that we should thank God we had the leadership we did during this crisis.

two-thirds of the increase in food services and drinking places (+27,000)
Job gains were concentrated in two durable goods industries–fabricated metal products (+8,000)
and machinery (+5,000).
