HOUSTON (AP) — A kindergartner brought a gun to his Houston elementary school and was among three students injured by fragments when it dropped from his pocket during lunchtime and accidentally fired, officials said.
One bullet discharged about 11 a.m. in the school’s cafeteria, spraying fragments at the students, said Houston Independent School District Assistant Police Chief Robert Mock.
“Either some type of chips off the floor, or it could be pieces of the round that discharged,” Mock said. “They had some cuts and stuff on their legs, they don’t appear to be life threatening.”
Two 6-year-old boys, including the one who had the gun, were wounded in the foot, said district spokesman Jason Spencer. A 5-year-old girl also suffered a foot injury, Spencer said.
Images taken from Houston television station KPRC’s news helicopter showed three children being wheeled to ambulances on stretchers. All were sitting up and appeared to be talking with emergency personnel. Upset parents rushed to the scene.
Houston is the state’s largest school district with more than 200,000 students.

Posted on April 19, 2011 at 2:56pmThe parent must have showed this child the gun. Why else would a five year old take interest or even know what it was? Five year olds usually like cars and trains…

Posted on April 19, 2011 at 3:08pmMy 5 year old was already becoming proficient with .22 pistols at age 5. Showing a child a gun and inspiring interest does not mean the child takes it to school. Showing a child a gun and not instilling gun safety, teaching and discipline on the other hand, causes bad things like this to happen. Same goes for adults who have never handled guns, actually.

AN BEEZ, unfortunately the shooter learned respect and how to handle a weopon from it’s parents, That’s the problem. No kid of mine would have ever wounded 2 innocent bystanders

‘I guess I am missing the point? I am comparing US crime statistics to Mexico and S. America.’
Why? Do you think we are more like Colombia than like Canada, Great Britain, or France?
Report Post »GhostOfJefferson
Posted on April 19, 2011 at 3:06pmIf you go to rural and suburban American and collect gun crime statistics, where gun ownership is very high, you’ll find hardly any crime whatsoever committed with guns. In fact, the crime rates in both locals are about equivalent to the violent crime rate in Switzerland, another heavily armed and low crime area.
If you go to urban America, you’ll find staggering gun crime and a mostly disarmed population.
Ask yourself why sometime. You may not like the answer, and many times the truth can well piss us off and throw us off of our assumptions and ideologies.

Posted on April 19, 2011 at 4:54pmBaikonur…Did it ever occur to you that large numbers of us don’t WANT to be like Canada, Great Britain, or France? Canada, where in certain locations, a pastor cannot read from the Old Testament without being arrested for hate speech. Great Britain where violent crime (even “gun” crime) has been steadily on the rise since they took away gun rights from ordinary citizens. And France? What can I say that hasn’t already been said. The point is that the US has, in the past at least, enjoyed greater personal freedom than any other nation on earth. With this freedom comes responsibility. The stupid, ignorant, and just plain bad will always be with us. It’s time we started to hold people personally responsible for their actions instead of trying to legislate our way into some mythical risk free utopia. This child’s parent(s) need to be held criminally liable for this. Leave the rest of us alone!

‘course, the Constitution can be interpreted as saying that guns should be allowed so that the government can be kept in line. That sounds pretty close to saying it’s okay to shoot people you disagree with. What about the dead person’s rights to life and liberty?
Then again, they WERE talking about flintlock muzzle-loaders back then. You got ONE shot, if you‘d kept the powder dry and the target hadn’t ducked in the long second between flash and detonation… a pencil probably was more dangerous back then.

Well since you wish to play that game then, how about looking up the statistics of gun crime in rural and suburban areas compared to urban areas? How about looking up statistics on the victims and perpetrators, and tell me sir statistician, what do you find? Compare the very negligible gun crime statistics in Switzerland with gun crime statistics in *rural or suburban America* and tell me what you find (hint, they’re the same)? Try hard and get back to us with your results.
It’s not guns, it’s not statistics, it’s culture. There are a couple of major cultures conflicting in these united States right now. One of them seems to be highly prone to irresponsibility, bad decisions making, rampant fatherless families and prone to amazing amounts of self inflicted violence. We see stories all the time, not just on the Blaze, but across the national news.
Since, you know, you wanted to play the statistics game, well, there you go.

Ummm…you lack of knowledge is showing. You want to refer to Luke 18:25, but let‘s take into account Matthew’s version of the same incident in 19:23-26. According to this, with God, all things are possible. Let‘s also look at Jesus’ “liberal” tendencies in Matthew 26:6-11. Your “liberal” friends can be found in vs. 8-9, “Why this waste?” they asked. “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.” Very liberal thinking, don’t you agree? And yet your “liberal” version of Jesus said, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.” Jesus did not come to this Earth with the sole purpose of feeding the hungry or giving money to the poor. He had compassion for them, but that was not why he was here.
Jesus was not anti-money. He simply said that that is not where our trust should be. He never condemned anyone for simply being rich. He condemned people who loved money more than God. There is also no condemnation for people who are in positions of power simply because they have the power. Please let me know what scriptures support such a bizarre claim. You won’t find it.
But thanks for the effort.

Report Post »If Jesus was so “anti-money”, why did he have such expensive clothes? How do I know? Would Roman soldiers cast lots(bet on) who would get His clothes? He was a Jew, so they would have seen His clothes as beneath them, unless they were so nice that they couldn’t help themselves.
If Jesus was so “anti-money” why did he teach so much on the responsibility of money? Such as the parable of the talents(Roman coinage, not our gifts-study the Greek for the root word). Also, he taught that the LOVE of money was the root of all evil, but money by itself without the love of it isn’t an issue, or he wouldn’t have used the word LOVE. He said you cannot serve two masters, money and God, but you certainly can use money, especially if you are furthering the Gospel. It isn’t a question of the money, it is a question of your heart. By the way, you can be poor, and be a Lover of money, don’t believe me, if you look at a nice car and wish that you had the money to buy it, guess what, you love money.
Paul said, I have been RICH, and I have been poor, and I have learned to be content in whatever state I am in. Again, not about the money, its about the HEART! And you are correct, Jesus was a Jew, not an Arab though, there is a difference.

Posted on April 19, 2011 at 10:06pmThe libs will probably try to take guns away from the parents of this child. Then parents of any child, then parents, then everybody. Then, once the guns are gone, impose Marshall Law and turn the US over to a World Govenment. This power play to remove guns from this parent spells doom to us all.
Redstate is reporting inside information that the government will use this to begin the crackdown on guns. Lock and load fellow Americans!

If you are a free citizen you should never be denied your 2nd amendment right. If you are that much of a danger you should be caged. Once you have paid a DEBT that the gov determines, you are square. If you crime is that heinous then you should be a lifer or executed. Nobody takes away a felon’s 1st amendment right or others. You make have some restricted on parole but once a debt is determined and you pay it, you should be a free citizen. You have the right… the GOD-GIVEN, INALIENABLE RIGHT, to protect yourself and that “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED”.
Seems stupid to “take away” a right because you think you can use it to kill. You let the same people behind a 3,000 lb. weapon(car) every day; and that is literally a privilege, not a right. If it’s about safety, why can you walk into a store and pick a black powder rifle off a shelf and walk out without a background check?
It’s about one thing; fear. Fear on the government’s end of not being able to control us. WE are the gov and we should be well armed.

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 3:04amD—A– It was more likely a brothers gangta gun stolen somewhere else. More and likely it was his 20 year old mothers latest “boyfriends” gun, and he has 3 younger siblings at home, or maybe his 35 year old granny’s “boyfriends” gun? Oh well we will never know as the “family” says “we’uns has no idea whar that gun come from, it not mine, boy musta found it in the yard.

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 4:37pmI’ve had both my children shooting since they were 3. An unloaded gun is no more than a stick. All of mine are loaded and my children know not to touch them. It’s a parents responsibility to teach their children respect for a firearm if they chose to own them. The parents of this child should absolutely be held responsible for their utter stupidity.
