William Bohlke, mayor of Hollywood Park, Texas, (about 15 miles from San Antonio) was killed by a 500-pound donkey on Monday. The freak accident took place on Bohlke’s ranch and his body was discovered by Atascosa County officials around 10 hours after the attack took place.
Details are scarce and officials may not be able to garner a great deal of information, as it appears as though Bohlke was alone at the time of the incident. Authorities are saying that the donkey likely trampled and kicked the mayor to death between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. near his truck (the vehicle’s door was found open and the engine was running). The family will decide the animal’s fate, as the donkey is purportedly still roaming around the ranch.
“We’ll probably never know what triggered it, but it was evident that this particular donkey was involved, based on the evidence at the scene and what we saw on this donkey,” Atascosa County Chief Deputy David Soward said in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News.
Soward described some of the factors that may have played a role in the attack. He said that it’s not uncommon for donkeys to “become very aggressive” and “very mean.” Such behavior can be spawned by a female being in heat.
Bohlke’s family issued a statement on the city’s web site, explaining the incident and letting residents know that funeral arrangements are underway. The statement fails to mention the donkey attack.
“It is with great regret that we, the family of Bill Bohlke, wish to inform you of his passing last night, August 27th, 2012,” the statement reads, in part. “Bill suffered a fatal injury while taking care of his prized cow herd near Pleasanton last evening.”
The major was a retired Air Force pilot and a Vietnam War veteran. He left behind a wife and three children.

Posted on September 1, 2012 at 1:08pmBack in the 1980s I had an electronics teacher who went off on a tangent about jackasses. He said they would put pressure against you with their bodies. If you couldn’t move they knew they had you pinned against something and would suffocate you to death with their weight. This teacher said he would smack them in the head with his fist to get their attention.Looks like one of them got the mayor pinned against the fense. Just animal instinct.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 9:25pmI’ve handled horses for over 45 years. I stand three aqha stallions and run about ten or so mares. For a short while I researched breeding mules which would have involved buying a jack. After research and speaking to a lot of “mule men” here in Tennessee I decided it was way to dangerous to have a jack on the property. Yup, more dangerous than my three breeding stallions. They are that unpredictable. They can be the same kind animal for 20 years and on the 20 year 1 day later anniversory they will tear you apart and than go back to being the same jack you knew. I’ve heard it from to many experts who own them and that was good enough for me. I don‘t know if a jack was involved in this but I’ll lay odds it was. And my concolences to his family. Bad way to go.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 8:07pmTwo clues…he was taking care of his cattle, and it was night. The donkey may have been a “GUARD” donkey. They are highly protective of the herd. The night visit may have triggered the donkey’s protective instincts. I have a donkey, and he is the sweetest, cutest little fellow on earth, but if a coyote or dog or raccoon cross his path, he will take off after them like a banshee from hades. Other than that, his favorite activity is getting petted. He would be a house pet if allowed, friendlier than most dogs.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 3:10pmIt is tragic–a man dying. I think too many take every animal for granted. Maybe too many animated films–or just lack of…something. For one thing, give thought to the animal–any animal–wants to be ‘free’ if I can use that term. They are not ever going to be anything but what they are–powerful, willful animals…did you know that a whole lot of people do not know where Mules “come from”? Hooves, teeth, claws–I love animals, but they must be respected as well. Asmall dog is powerful & quite strong, and beautiful birds even small ones–Blue Jay’s…! Maybe it’s my “native” DNA..(hate that term-native I mean. There is no “word” or “term”…not FBI, but sure have the heart & the mind…the “senses”–Thank Heavens!!! Just curious–didn’t catch this–was this man represented by an Elephant, by any chance? & in re: Elizabeth Warren…SHUT UP!! Or put up as they say…I have DNA, tin-types & sepia-tone photographs to go with the “family lore”…..makes me sick…sorry, off topic. People will blame the animal…I fear. Too bad. Didn’t read the piece–don’t want to hear if the animal will be punished for being an animal.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 6:42pmYeah. I have friends who lost a beloved dog to a deer. The dog got too close, and the deer reared up and landed squarely on the dog’s back w/a killing blow.
Never underestimate even domesticated animals.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 1:07pmContrary to popular belief donkeys are not the docile little pack animal carrying the Virgin Mary to Bethlehem. Ranchers keep donkeys as guard and alarm animals. Want to keep the coyotes from taking your calves? Put a donkey in the pasture and the donkey will make short work of Mr. Coyote or a pack of feral dogs. As a matter of fact you need to train you donkey to keep him from stomping ol’ spot into the ground. A dismounted cowboy isn‘t much better off if the burrow doesn’t recognize him as Mr. Bohlke found out.
I had an aunt who keep a couple “pet” donkeys and the only thing I ever came across in the barn yard that was worse were the geese. I had to hide in the pen with the bull, he was afraid of the geese too!

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 11:43amDonkeys are used extensively as herd guards against coyotes, feral dogs, hogs and even cougars and bears. Anyone with experience will only use little jenny’s, not a jack. They ARE known to be very agressive in protecting “their” herd and I’m not real sure why this guy even got out of the truck if he saw the jack anywhere near if he was checking his herd or fence. Some people feel like if they raise one from foal they will stay docile to the person, but it has been my experience that’s not true. I use my dog to warm me if the next door neighbors‘ donkey jack comes my way when I’m checking fence. I won’t have one on my place. I trust my 2000lb. bull more than a donkey jack and even he stays away from the jack across the fence from us. I feel for his family. Hard way to go.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 2:31pmA socialized guard donkey is not dangerous to their “family”, which includes dogs, cats, chickens, people, cows, etc. The problem is a lot of people get a donkey, throw them out in the pasture, & de-socialize them. They are just out there to do their job. No hoof trimming, no teeth care, vaccinations, health care or any interaction with people. A jack can be a fierce opponent or a gentle loving member of the family. Depends on how he’s treated. I run a donkey rescue, & would never adopt out a jack without having him gelded. That gentle loving member of the family, can turn dangerous in a moment, all it takes is a cycling jenny or something he doesn’t like to set him off. Their flat muscle structure rather than the bulging muscles horses have, makes them extremely strong for their size, which some people don’t realize until something happens. The donkey shouldn’t be blamed for being a donkey. It sounds like this donkey had a history of being aggressive & that behavior was if not encouraged at least allowed. He was doing what he was suppose to do, unfortunately the outcome was not good.
