U-Haul Carrying Kegs Hits Yale-Harvard Tailgaters and Kills Woman

Tailgater Killed at Yale Harvard Game, Hit By U Haul Carrying Beer Kegs

What was supposed to be a great fall afternoon enjoying one of college football’s oldest rivalries has ended in tragedy. The Yale Daily News reports that shortly before 10:00 a.m. Saturday, three people tailgating the 128th Harvard-Yale game in New Haven were struck by a U-Haul truck driven by a Yale student, killing one tailgater and injurying the other two:

“The incident took place at 9:49 a.m. One of the victims, a 30-year-old woman from Massachusetts unaffiliated with Harvard or Yale, was pronounced dead at 10:16 a.m. at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and another, a New Haven woman and student in the School of Management, is in serious but stable condition at Y-NHH, Hartman said. The third victim was taken to St. Raphael’s Hospital and treated for minor injuries.”

The AP reports that the U-Haul truck was carrying beer kegs, and that the victims were struck after the truck suddenly, and unexplainably, accelerated. An onlooker to the crash posted a video on YouTube showing victims awaiting an amblance as police arrived on the scene:

“We’re not getting a pulse,” said someone crouched near one victim. One tailgater who heard the crash behind him turned to see two people lying on the ground, and told AP:

“‘The driver looked shocked. Absolutely shocked,’ Walker said. Police have not said whether alcohol was a factor.

‘He didn’t look intoxicated or anything like that,’ Walker added. ‘He had a dazed look like he had just hit someone.’”

The driver is in police custody and the woman who was killed was pronounced dead at about 10:15 a.m. The Yale Daily News reports that the U-Haul was heading for the site of the Sigma Phi Epsilon tailgate, and crashed into a smaller U-Hail in addition to the three victims. Students at the scene told the Daily News that emergency responders gave one of the victims CPR for 10 minutes.

At the start of halftime, the Yale Bowl stopped for a moment of silence for the victims. The announcer, Mark Ryba, delivered a statement from the University confirming that one victim had died and two were injured in the crash, according to the Daily News.

“The Yale community is deeply saddened by the tragic vehicle accident that occurred at a Yale Bowl parking lot this morning,” the school said in statement.

“Yale extends our sympathies and prayers to the family of the woman who was killed and hopes for the speedy recovery of the two women hurt,” the statement said. “Our thoughts are also with those who witnessed or were affected by this tragic accident.”

As for the game itself, Harvard won 45-7 for its fifth straight victory over Yale. Police gave details of the tragedy to the New Haven Register:

One ‘90 Yale Alum at the scene told the Register that he was furious about regulations on tailgating partying and drinking. “This is the stupidest thing the school could do to turn off alumni,” said Ken T., adding that Yale is dependent on alumni for donations.

Yale is inside the city of New Haven Ct. with different school buildings being interspersed with the city itself. There are many panhandlers and deadbeats and criminals running around with the college students. My son, a Yale scholar masters grad ‘09, had a friend who was robbed at gunpoint right in front of his own apartment in the middle of campus. Yale is a dangerous place. The cameraman was just a local loser I would bet, and not a student. They do like to party up there too.

today‘s Hartford Courant has lawyer for the driver reporting that it was the truck’s fault. The kegs of beer had nothing to do with it. A field sobriety test was done but no breathilizer or blood tests. Under Ct law any fatality from a vehichle a blood test to determine the sobriety of drive is demanded, unless you are rich and go to Yale.

This makes me wonder what kind of condition the truck was in. UHaul isn’t known for its pristine fleet.

It’s not all that difficult for a driver not familiar with a vehicle to step on both brake and accelerator, especially when wearing boots! I do it all the time, but know which one to favor when it happens! I also leave gobs of room and drive like an old lady when there are pedestrians or kids or pets around! I even swerved the other day to miss a snake on a dirt and gravel road! Pray for the driver, too! He will live with this for the rest of his life!

People get killed in a tragic accident, and this douche (the biggest douche in the world, apparently) and he’s worried about Alumni Donations.

Maybe he is pitching for the deceased woman‘s family to declare ’in lieu of flowers, send donations to Yale, so they can have beer vendors for the tailgate parties”! Don’t hold your breath! It is more likely they will have their attorney contact the institution for a little pre-trial discovery!

I’ve done a lot of crazy things, but I have yet to get run over by a U-Haul full of beer. What a way to go.

Did anyone do cpr before the ambulance got there? At least chest compressions if they didnt have a pocket mask, ignorant people always point there fingers at emt’s and paramedics as if there God. If people want miracles in situations like this take a class on cpr and become a first responder or be a wallflower blaming others. Not to say she would have lived, but ebonics wasnt helping her.

What do you mean it should have been run into the biology bldg or the law school???? My daughter is a bio student at Yale and because they are scientists that study very real things like evolution and global warming they should be hurt???? I was scared today as any parent would be about the safety of my daughter. I was saddened by this horribly sad tragedy. Many of you all are so heartless. Most of the kids at Yale are not rich at all. But fortunately many are enlightened and smart and hard working. They see two views. They don’t judge. They want to help the world. Many of you just want to hate the other side and not listen or care about the suffering of others. The country can’t go on this divided. We need to support not hate or be jealous. Just because a kid has worked hard and is in great school does not mean they should be a target for anything but praise!

But since you want to ramble on about the “good” of Harvard education system, including Biology, what kind of hero’s are the underpinning of that departments philosophy?

Professor George Wald, Nobel Prize winner Biology from Harvard.

“There are only two possibilities as to how life arose; one is spontaneous generation arising to evolution, the other is a supernatural creative act of God, there is no third possibility. Spontaneous generation that life arose from non-living matter was scientifically disproved 120 years ago by Louis Pasteur and others. That leaves us with only one possible conclusion, that life arose as a creative act of God. I will not accept that philosophically because I do not want to believe in God, therefore I choose to believe in that which I know is scientifically impossible, spontaneous generation arising to evolution.”

“Most modern biologists, having reviewed with satisfaction the downfall of the spontaneous generation hypothesis, yet unwilling to accept the alternative belief in special creation, are left with nothing.”

(Dr. George Wald, evolutionist, Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University at Harvard, Nobel Prize winner in Biology.)

Your daughter is willing to trade ethics for lies for the propagation of criminally fallacious education.

Why are you so quick to blame the equipment? I‘d bet a dollar to a donut that the driver was a kid who’d never driven anything bigger than his dad’s Lexus SUV before in his life, let alone a box truck loaded with a bunch of beer kegs. A load which could easily shift unexpectedly and cause an inexperienced driver to react adversely, I might add.
