LONDON (AP) — Union leaders say there will be a surge in strikes next year to protest the government’s harsh spending cuts – and they may even affect Britain’s royal wedding.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said on Thursday that walkouts could become widespread in 2011 as workers feel the impact of Britain’s austerity measures.
Treasury chief George Osborne has announced 81 billion pounds ($128 billion) in spending cuts through 2015, which will see as many as 330,000 public sector jobs lost and trim welfare payments.
The Public and Commercial Services Union says it is planning strikes for late April or early May, which could potentially impact on the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 5:04pmThey have their head in the sand – not – it’s up their butt. Someday they’ll figure out that “money doesn’t grow on trees”, “you can’t get blood from a turnip”, and that the only people they hurt are themselves.
Unions are a VERY large part of the problem – and the cure will be to get rid of the unions, fire any public employee who doesn’t go/come to work and do the job they were hired to do. Fired for cause – no unemployement – no benefits. It’s time citizens (all of them) learned that the government is not a cash cow or a way to milk those that work.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 3:49pmIt is coming here. I am thankful right now that the UK is a portal into our future if we don’t wake up. I say repalce them with nonunion people that are willing to work. We all know what that will do which is exactly want the progressives want. They know the violence that the unions are capable of and will use them to do their dirty deeds, thus creating …………………..a CRISIS. I hope it is not to late for the people in the UK since they have sat back and allowed their government to become a socialist country. I believe that the whole world is watching what happens here and through our efforts and our determination they might possibly gain the strength and courage to fight for their God given rights as well.. I don’t care what most people say, I believe if it comes down to a complete take over of our nation our military will stand behind the people instead of an administration that would attempt to take America down. God Bless America and the spirit and honor that still prevails inspite of the progessive advancements to destroy her.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 1:28pmPerhaps long ago there was a reason for a Union, but since their inception, they have signed their souls away to criminals and thugs to further their agenda. The Union outlived its usefulness a very long time, and the longer they exist, the more rotten and plague ridden their corpse becomes.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 10:57amThis is what is going to happen in the U.S. if we aren’t very careful. Public workers including teachers should not be allowed to join a union, and if they do striking should be illegal. The unions here are no different then the unions in the U.K. They could care less if the whole country is going down the tubes, they want more. They are the fat hogs at the slop trough always squealing for more. oink oink oink.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 9:40amIt is unions that have caused the American worker to be priced out of the market! Thus we have barely any manufacturing jobs here any more! Between outrageous pensions and pay, they have bankrupted many a company! And The Obumbler wants to bring unions (collective bargaining) to the gov’t sector, just goes to prove how marxist the man is!

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 9:44amVirginia is a ‘right to work state’, and we don’t like unions very much. Did you see the expose on them recently, going to the park to chug down a six pack and smoke a fat one?! Then when they’re all buzzed up, they make the automibiles that fall apart in one year, makes me want to throw up! It’s not all union members, but damn it is quite a few of them. Unions did have a place at one time, but that time has long since been gone!

London’s burning! Let ‘em burn, they put themselves in that position, just like we have, and it’s gonna be coming here when we make difficult choices on spending cut too! We’ve also created a welfare class, and they will be screaming like little children when we take it away, booo hooo!

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 9:26amFor a lot of the U.K. I tend to agree with your sentiments. However there are still elements of traditional conservatism and libertarianism over there, and it makes me a bit sad to consider how what they must be going through right now. I can’t imagine waking up to an utterly alien culture, like they do every day.
It‘s a wonder that they’re not emigrating to the U.S. or at least out of the U.K., though I suspect that many are (especially to Australia). Such a shame, it was a great nation at one time.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 9:36amI agree, it’s not everyone over there. My brother-in-law is a Brit and he is conservative, and it makes him burn inside to see what England has become. He just went over there this summer for a visit, and he said it is like a muslim country there now, overrun by Pakistanis and the like, and a bunch of socialist punks everywhere. I do feel a a bit of heartfelt sorrow for him and his country, but they’ve done it to themselves with misguided socialism, just like we are doing here, sad, really sad!

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 5:20pmBush specifically refused to unionize the TSA when he founded it after 911 because he wanted to be able to get rid of them if possible. There were 50,000 then and there are 70,000 TSA employees now. They will become permenant government workers (and dues paying Democrats and election contributors) if Obama can possibly swing it.
A unionized TSA would could hobble the whole US air transportation system.
