U.N. Agency That Just Voted-In Palestine Reprimands Israel for Newspaper Cartoon

JERUSALEM (The Blaze/AP) — UNESCO has reprimanded Israel over a newspaper cartoon showing the Israeli prime minister telling pilots to bomb the U. N. agency’s office after bombing Iran, a spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry said Friday.

The U.N.’s Paris-based cultural arm called in Israel’s ambassador, Nimrod Barkan, on Wednesday and handed him a protest note saying the cartoon “endangers the lives of unarmed diplomats,” according to the Israeli spokesman, Yigal Palmor.

The note came from the organization’s director-general, Irina Bokova, he said. Officials at UNESCO in Paris were not immediately available for comment Friday.

The cartoon was published last week in the liberal daily Haaretz, known for its criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline government.

It depicts Netanyahu and his defense minister briefing pilots before a hypothetical attack on Iran, telling them to target UNESCO’s office in the West Bank on their way back.

“And on your way back,” the cartoon shows Netanyahu saying, “you’re gonna hit the UNESCO office in Ramallah!”

UNESCO Reprimands Israel Over Cartoon But Misunderstands the Meaning

The cartoon was a jab at Netanyahu’s policies and his displeasure over the U.N. culture agency’s recent recognition of the Palestinians as a member state. The recognition led U.S., Canada and Israel to cut off funding to the agency.

The reprimand reflects an apparent misunderstanding of the cartoon – which was aimed at Netanyahu, not at UNESCO.

“Israel‘s ambassador to UNESCO didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when a senior official at the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization called him in for a tongue-lashing on Wednesday,” Haaretz writes in a follow-up story.

Palmor said the Israeli ambassador responded by telling UNESCO his country has a free press.

“We’ve heard of Islamists raging against supposedly disrespectful cartoons, but U.N. officials going down the same road – that’s a whole new ballgame,” Palmor said.

“What exactly does UNESCO want of us – to send our fine boys to protect UNESCO’s staff, or to shut down the paper?” the Israeli government reportedly responded to Barkan after he relayed the message. “It seems your work environment is getting more and more reminiscent of ‘Animal Farm.’”

On Thursday, UNESCO said it would not undertake new projects this year as it decides how to respond to the funding cutoffs following the move to recognize the Palestinians last month.

The U.S. typically provides one-fifth of the agency’s annual budget – some $80 million, three-quarters of which has not yet been handed over and which will now remain unpaid.

UNESCO protects heritage sites and works to improve literacy, access to schooling for girls and cultural understanding.

      just like UNICEF only works in countries that have dictators that horde food and foreign aid for themselves..
      and just like IAEA only monitors those countries that already have nuclear power and weapons but ignores those that are developing them for terrorist purposes ….

      i mean look at the UN Human Rights Council…Syria, Iran, China…all those upstanding democratic peace loving equality for women and minority driven cultures…

There is a kind of person that drops out of civilization and goes into the jungle, they are referred to as jungle rats.     Hell boys, I wouldn’t get upset if the cartoon had suggested that the Israeli pilots fly on to NYC, and bomb U.N. headquarters. Seems there’s no shortage of anti-Israeli, pro-Muslim sentiment at the U.N. But then I’m an anti-U.N. bigot who believes the World would be better served without one, and their collection of pin-headed, self-serving Humanists who believe they can coerce the World into a Utopian Society. So I guess that labels me as being pro-Israel, anti-Muslim. I admit my guilt.

    Might want to read Revelations Chapter 12 and 13 and seek understanding. I am. Seems these two chapters are beginning to unfold…as the 17 nation EU alliance begins to dwindle toward 7 to 10 and irrational hatred of Israel and Jews increase dramatically….not only in the Middle East but in Europe, in our capital, and on our streets as evidenced by the OWS outbursts of pure hatred.

      I don’t remember Israel ever saying that not only should another country be wiped of the face of the Earth, but anyone of the same religion no matter where they live should be killed. I have heard many Arab/Muslim nations and organizations saying that or something similar. As for being “aggressive”, Israel is less aggressive then it’s surrounding neighbors, it is just more successful at it then they are. There is something a bit humorous about countries and people who attack someone else and then try to act the victim when they get their butts kicked. You are pathetic.

      They are taking homes and businesses. They are displacing these people. They are placing the people into ghettos. They are walling in those ghettos. They set up checkpoints for their displaced people. And, they subject these people to the same vulgarity that they themselves once suffered.

      Jews have lived continuously in the land of Israel for over 3000 years; the Arabs arrived through multiple invasions, beginning in the 7th Century AD. In the year 70 AD, when the Jewish civilization was already over 1000 years old, the Romans forced most of the Jews of Judea and Samaria (now the West Bank) into exile. By the end of the 19th Century, the majority population of Jerusalem was Jewish
