Police Officers Union‘s ’U Raise ‘Em, We Cage ‘Em’ T-Shirt Angers Town

U raise em, we cage em: School Police Officer Union T Shirt Angers Town

A Northern California school police officers union has come under fire for selling t-shirts with a picture of a child behind bars and the slogan: “U raise ‘em, we cage ‘em.”

Twin Rivers Unified Superintendent Frank Porter, who oversees the police department, said officials are meeting to decide whether to take disciplinary action.

“I am deeply disappointed that any of our employees would produce anything like that, even in their off time,” Porter said.

According to town leaders, they felt that the fundraiser-intended shirts were “highly offensive and fuel mistrust of the Twin Rivers Police Department,” reports Fox News.

“Unfortunately, this shirt seems to confirm that this is who Twin Rivers Police are and how they think, or at least some of them,” community leader Derrell Roberts said. “This doesn’t speak highly of the culture of this department.”

The Twin Rivers Police Officers Association (POA) officials said they came up with the T-shirt idea in 2009 to raise money for fallen officers. Less than 30 shirts were ordered and most were sold for $12 to union members.

The POA website said in an official statement: “These shirts were made more than two years ago and have not been sold by the POA for over a year due to concerns in our own department.”

“However, no matter how long ago, we realize and acknowledge that we have made a mistake and an error in judgment,” the website stated. The union president stressed that the T-shirts weren’t on sale to members of the public, writes KCRA.

Association President Arlin Kocher claims that the shirts were a mistake and that the union stopped selling them this summer at the police chief’s request.

“I don’t think this will be received well by the public, which is why we stopped selling them,” Kocher said. “Our union, especially me, take full responsibility.”

Others were simply shocked at what they perceived to be a severe lack of good judgement.

“Oh, my God. Bad message. If it was the gang unit in a high crime area, that might be a little different. That’s bad, that’s horrible,” said former Sacramento Sheriff John McGinness according the Daily Mail.

This couldn’t have come at a worse time for the department.

They have been under increasing scrutiny since one of its officers was shot four times on Oct. 22 and the suspected shooter, Tyrone Smith, died hours later while in custody.

In fact, the Sacramento Branch of the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has asked the FBI to examine the department’s “scope of duties, authority and boundaries,” reports KCRA.

The NAACP even put together a town-hall style meeting so Sacramento residents could voice their concerns about the department, including “violent behavior and misconduct.”

With an organization like NAACP trying to call in an FBI investigation, the last thing that police department needs is a stack of shirts upsetting members of the community.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

When the folks you’ve sworn to help treat you with less respect than they do a stray dog, It’s hard to not have an us against them attitude. Everyone hates the cops untill they need them. Then it’s “where the hell are they, it’s taking forever?”. I’ve had my run-ins with arrogant cops but those are the ones you look at and dismiss, shut your mouth and let them spout their sermon and take your ticket.

@oathkeeper10 @JLGunner Useful comments but let’s stay on point. The T shirts are reflective of an ignorant mindset. Is it Protect and Serve or Fine ‘Em and Cage ’Em. Let’s not argue the extremes here as it always a weak position. In most communities the legislators, courts and police have criminalized adolescence and spend more time setting up serious criminals who travel 45 in a 35 zone. The correlation between the drop in tax revenues and issuing of trivial speeding and seat belt tickets is more reflective of police actions in the majority of suburban communities. We have real criminals and real problems in this country. Again, if you can die in a useless war in Afghanistan at 19 then you certainly should be able to drink a beer to mourn your fallen friend.

@jrook Ok the facts…Here in St Pete the youth that roll throught the streets (usually between 10pm and 1am 7 days a week) average in age from 9 – 17. They are responsible for closing a mall here in downtown. I personally had to deal with the little savages. There was a man sucker punched by a 16 yr old girl and his wife was pepper sprayed by her 14 yr old female friend. So lets see, is it really unreasonable that after years of parents not parenting and society failing to demand standards or personal accountability, that shirts like this would start showing up?

Freedom of Speech. If your offended look away. There is truth in the statement on the shirt. All those young kids vandalizing city property at these riots across the country. I wonder where their parents are and if they even know or care that their children are breaking the laws? That is the problem with America today. People do not understand any of our freedoms. We need to protect these police officers for freedom of speech. Plain and simple.

Heaven forbid should parents be responsible for raising their children and instill good values, honesty, integrity, responsibility, etc. I think it is a legitimate statement. Look at the backgrounds of most (not necessarily all) juvenile and/or adult offenders. They generally lacked proper guidance and supervision by responsible adult(s) during their childhood years.

If you raise them to embrace an animalistic mentality, no values or morals, and low self-esteem, they are likely to be criminals and be incarcerated (caged). The adult offenders and most juveniles are responsible for their own actions, but the thought process can usually be traced back to bad parenting.

If you don’t like the message, change your parenting skills. Otherwise, it is considered job security for the police who have to clean up the mess from your demon spawn.

I give kudos to those who were raised in these environments and are able to rise above it to become good responsible members of society.

      @ Linkeding,

I don’t know about this Mark guy, but his ideas don’t sound so far fetched. Actually, there have been multiple cases that have come out recently where privatized prisons were getting a judge to convict people so that they could make more money. Obviously they also paid off the judge as well.

Then you have cases of planting evidence like what just happened up in NYC where undercover cops helped to stage people with narcotics just so they could meet their quota. And the entire “war on drugs” is ridiculous. You might think that after our stint with prohibition and the overnite increase in crime and crime related death, we would have learned our lesson. I’m no drug addict (unless you count chocolate and ice cream), but I am still not for imprisoning people who commit no violent crime or offense upon anyone else’s rights. To do so just isn’t right. It may seem right to you, but it isn’t.

Also, the main reasons that people are against drugs so much is that they believe that drugged up people commit more crime. If that is the case, then just charge the person with the crime and have them serve their time for the real crime instead of blaming it on something they ingested. After all, there is a large portion of the nation on prescribed mood “enhancing” drugs at any one time. Are they treated any different than anyone else if they commit a crime?

The war on drugs was started by the agriculture lobbyists and is continued today by big pharma lobbyi

in relation to another article on the blaze (about spanking). This is the end result of federalizing local law enforcement (via police unions):

    “National Unionization

House Resolution 413 — the oddly-named Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act — has a stated purpose of extending collective bargaining rights to all first responders. Doug Stafford from the National Right to Work Committee believes this legislation has greater implications and grants the federal government “broad power to impose the terms and conditions of employment for … public safety workers and local and state governments.”

Should this legislation become law, it’s unlikely that a newly-established national union would allow localities to lay off police officers. The result would be that localities would either have to raise taxes after federal funding ran out or ask for additional federal funding, creating a permanent dependency that will foster federal control over local policing practices.

Though a rapid transition to a federalized police force is unlikely here in America, an incremental shift to greater federal control is already occurring. These efforts will be difficult to forestall as Washington plays an increasingly intrusive role in local law enforcement.”

We have the DOJ sending guns to mexico to then turn around and say its because of our second amendment that there is violence in mexico. DOJ is the chief law enforcement office. Our cops should “protect and SERVE” but to me it seems like more and more they are tools used to oppress the people. I hate pc liberals but there is a point when our public servents should be held to a certain standered.

      God Bless

The truth is that they build prisons based on population growth in urban areas.

That’s not to say anything about the residents in that area, it says a great deal about the Prison Industrial Complex, and how it is merged with the military industrial complex. The military is helping the Taliban grow poppy for heroin, the cops are being militarized and federalized, and the corrupt court system leans in favor of public servants and seeks convictions and long sentences… even though the Feds and cops are caught moving drugs, guns, and cash for organized crime, they still prey on the low-level users and dealers in America while keep the drugs illegal and lucrative for the Cartels.

Then your kids get sent to a prison working for slave wages (undercutting free-market competition) owned by the same bank that launders cash for the cartels.

      Sick.

Nope, you’re still a neocon, and trying to associate my beliefs with “liberals” just shows how desperate you are to maintain your cognitive dissonance [which is sick].

You have ***FAILED*** to even rebut one of my accusations, you simply toss out opinionated drivel about my beliefs as if it passes as fact or wit. It doesn’t, it’s still drivel.

What are you actually commenting on, the fact that your brain is too atrophied to follow my smooth transitions between topics? It isn’t my fault that you lack the higher abstract faculties of logic that I possess, or that you aren’t able to make poignant connections between abstractions and articulate or comprehend them.

Maybe you’ve drank too much fluoride water or failed to suffer a book here and there throughout your life. I don’t know. I don’t really care.

One thing is for sure, personal/financial/religious freedoms doesn’t equate with modern day liberalism. Perhaps it equates with the original definition of “liberal”, but not the aspersion you cast.

Nope, you’re still a neocon who wants to impose your religious morals on others while you continue to lick the Police State boots in your self-segregated suburban utopia, continuing support for neocon AND liberal warmongering, “safe” thanks to your heroes, “safe” from the unwashed masses.

How much drugs and guns did your police state heroes ship into the ghettos today? How much cash did they help launder and shakedown?

You and your ilk are nothing more than Thrifty Liberals.

When I read you (and those like you) I see nothing but practiced Libertarian handbook jibberish. What I see are the childish rantings of misguided children with a type of sensory integration dysfunction or deficit who wind up all over the place trying to justify some nonsensical cult-like ideology that can only be defined along the same lines as the Liberal left. The only difference between you and the Liberal left? Your thriftiness…

You must have ADD… I’ve written this all before in great detail… but I‘ll take into consideration who I’m dealing with here and put it into a nutshell for you squirrels. Libertarians and/or Ron Paul supporters IMO are a schizophrenic to a degree… liberal on social issues while conservative on fiscal matters/fiscal discipline (Thrifty Liberals, at best Quasi-Conservatives). If folks are not personally disciplined they are not likely to be publicly disciplined. Human nature.

@YEP. Trying to deal with a Libertarian is almost as bad as dealing with a Liberal (common gene pool). They will do their damnest to try an convince you they are the true one and only Conservatives, but in reality are the Democratic Party’s best friends. They know Ron Paul can’t get nominated… so they’re happy to see their other hero get elected again. Libertarians should get some ****** and admit the truth…. they can live just fine under a Democratic President.

I’m sorry, I don’t follow your ridiculous assertions anymore than tracking stars of the heavens. Your comments are geared towards nothing but argument. All you offer is opinions…like “in my opinion” blah blah blah and and “What I see is” blah blah blah.

You haven’t presented any facts or debated any issues. You’re simply a Neocon Pavlovian Attack dog who hates Libertarians because they dare to differ from your warmongering, religious moral-imposing ideology.

You STILL haven’t presented a coherent argument as to why you consider Conservative Libertarians “Thrifty Liberals”. I would like to hear your illogical assertions, however, so I can continue to laugh at your pathetic floundering!

You say that Libertarians are “liberal” on social issues, but you can’t elaborate? You just ASSERT that Libetarians are “liberal” on social issues, but can’t go into any level of detail? What’s the matter, afraid it will expose you?

You neocons would like to impose your religious morals on people’s personal freedoms. That’s what you call “personal discipline”. I don’t allow my conscience to burn me up from the inside out. I do what I want to do and I don’t CARE about your religious ideological imposition. That’s called personal and religious freedom, and indifference. Not Liberalism.

      ***FAIL***
