U.S. Ambassador Criticized by State Department for ‘Faith-Based Writing’ Resigns

U.S. Ambassador Criticized by State Department for Faith Based Writing ResignsLast week we brought you the saga of Douglas Kmiec, the U.S. ambassador to Malta. The U.S. State Department recently issued a 41-page report that accused Kmiec for being too outspoken about religion.  The background is worth reading here.  Well now we have this update from the AP:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. ambassador to Malta, an important Roman Catholic supporter of President Barack Obama, said Sunday he would resign after a State Department report criticized him for spending too much time writing and speaking about his religious beliefs.

In letters to Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Douglas Kmiec said he would step down Aug. 15. He told The Associated Press that no one pressured him to leave.

Kmiec was a well-known conservative law professor and commentator before being taking the job in 2009. But a report this month by the State Department’s inspector general rebuked Kmiec for concentrating too much on issues such as abortion and his faith, while neglecting his ambassadorial duties

“I doubt very much whether one could ever spend too much time on this subject,” Kmiec wrote Obama in his resignation letter.

The audit was the second critical assessment of a politically appointed ambassador this year and illustrates the pitfalls that presidents can face when they appoint noncareer diplomats to ambassadorships, often as a reward for their political support.

A February report blasted the 14-month tenure of Cynthia Stroum, a big Obama donor who became ambassador to Luxembourg. It described her service as fraught with personality conflicts, verbal abuse and questionable expenditures on travel, wine and liquor. Things were so bad in the wealthy European nation that some staff requested transfers to Iraq and Afghanistan, the report said. Stroum resigned effective Jan. 31, just days before the scathing assessment was made public.

The audit of the U.S. Embassy in Malta said Kmiec’s “outside activities have detracted from his attention to core mission goals” in the Mediterranean island nation, such as promoting maritime security and American business. It acknowledged the wide respect for Kmiec in the conservative, Roman Catholic country of Malta, but said his articles distracted him and embassy officials by forcing them to carefully review his writing. They upset administration officials in Washington, too, it noted.

Kmiec responded by describing the criticism of his religious views was “especially odd” because his friendship with Obama began out of a common view that “too much of politics had been used to divide us, sometimes by excluding people of faith.”

Kmiec, a law professor at Pepperdine University and a lawyer in President Ronald Reagan’s administration, was targeted by conservative Catholics and denied Communion by one priest for his support for Obama during the presidential campaign.

In his letter to Clinton, Kmiec noted that he advised President George H.W. Bush in 1989 that government audits should focus on rooting out waste, fraud and abuse, and suggested that the criticism of his ambassadorship was in effect a “sting-back.” He said inspectors use the audits to criticize support for Obama’s policies such as his goal to promote interfaith dialogue.

The State Department declined comment on Kmiec’s announcement.

The embassy in Malta has recently played an enhanced role as the nearest European country to Libya. More than 180 Americans were ferried to Malta when Moammar Gadhafi’s forces violently cracked down on protesters seeking an end to his four-decade rule.

CNN looked at his resignation letter:

“With my reputation impugned by the recent … report, I can no longer be certain that I am in a position with my government to have your needs and perspectives heard in the best possible light,” Kmiec said in an e-mailed statement.

The State Department had no immediate comment Saturday on the ambassador’s submitted resignation, including whether or not it had been accepted.

Kmiec, the former dean of the Catholic University of America’s law school, defended his actions in his official letters and statement. He was appointed in 2009 — a year after the “Kennedy Democrat and Reagan Republican,” as he’d described himself in his letter to Clinton, spearheaded Obama’s outreach to Catholic voters in the 2008 presidential campaign.

Kmiec was very critical of the report, released last week from the U.S. State Department’s inspector general, which criticized him for spending so much time writing and speaking about faith-related issues.

CNN describes Kmiec’s resignation letter as defiant:

In his letter to Clinton, Kmiec said the report was based on “unsupported speculation that someone doing as much writing as I have done could not have also been devoted to the embassy mission.”

“The contrary proof … is the strength of our embassy,” he wrote. “Our work is careful, thorough and timely, and I am fully apprised of all of it.”

The ambassador claimed, in his letter to Clinton, that the inspector general report’s authors had “failed to read any of my writing or see its highly positive effect on our bilateral relations.” He also said the report’s assertion that faith-based writings weren’t relevant to his position represented a “flawed and narrow vision of our diplomatic mission.”

The CNN article also looks at Kmiec’s assertion that the criticism may be, in part, payback for something that happened in 1989 — read that account here.

Here is a interview Kmiec did with Stephen Colbert back in 2009:

Any person of true ethical or Christian faith who is dumb enough to support Obama and his liberation theology/Islamic beliefs is simply asking for an a$$ kicking form those he/she has supported. It’s been stick out your chin time for decent people who supported this empty sack of a man, and his minions.
Decent, ethical people should run as fast as they can in the direction away from Obama and his policies.

Agreed completely. I just don’t get how GOOD people think they can change these people.

They’re lost and forever in this life. if you voted for Obama in this country, you’ve lost your way a long time ago. There’s never been a more obvious wrong choice than there was between THAT and yes a little liberal but WAR hero John McCain.

Up to me these people never vote again in this country they obviously care nothing about voting for such a brutal candidate in all areas..

The former Ambassador is obviously a hypocrite…. let’s keep in mind who he is supporting in Obama. As a Jr, Senator and now as President, Obama has championed late term abortions.

No Christian or person of conscious could ever support this unless the mother’s health is in grave danger. The argument about abortion goes out the window ( a collection of cells) when it comes to these late term murders.

Tried to figure out if there is an exact quote from the State Department saying he was writing too much, but specifically, writing too much about religion. Does anyone know if that distinction is in writing? As for the Colbert clip, thank you very much Blaze for pulling that up. Few work as hard as Colbert. If all this is piecing together like it seems to be, then U.S. ambassador Douglas Kmiec was having second thoughts about ditching religion in accordance to this atheistic administration.

If so, it is an enormously revealing peer into how exactly, this administration dissects & extricates their rejects.

How could this man support for potus a man who said if his daughters ‘made a mistake’ they should be allowed an abortion ?? I do not understand how he can support pro-life positions and support the PUPPET to other Catholics.

I had the same thoughts as most on here have expressed and I’m wondering why does he want to team up with them again? I don’t understand how blind people are – and I’m about the most realistic person around. And how they can be brainwshed so easily. But yes, the Bible warns about all this. And it’s horrible that Consvs./Christians allowed us to get to this breaking point – let it build up for decades. As a Protestant, I don’t understand Catholics – or anyone that believes strongly that abortion is murder, a sin – among other issues that the Dems – and especially Pres. Obama stand for – can vote for them & defend him. I was told that their priests & pastors tell them that it’s the other stuff like “social justice” and “redistribution of wealth” – welfare (helping the poor, unemployed, etc.) – are more important somehow than the abortion or homosexual stuff. Somehow they must believe they (Dems) are more “moral” bc of that? Does not compute. Please — everyone – don’t just bllindly follow and believe what your spiritual leaders say, no matter how “sincere” they may be. I’ve learned most of the time, they’re “sincerely wrong”. Do your own research about these issues in a non-Catholic Bible. Jesus was NOT for “social justice” (it’s “equal justice”), not for “collective salvation” (it’s individual). I’d also take heed of what “Robert Hawk” said. I’ve read encouraging news that the black consvs. are waking up somewhat – getting better anyway. Most Dems really want to keep them “on the plantation” & are totally selfish and liars….only care about keeping their power and control. Please wake up – also all other minorities. If we do, then finally, we can rid our country of this evil & become healthier both spiritually and physically, economically, safer & blessed by God instead of cursed.

I remember a couple years ago that a prominent Clinton White House official, Robert Reich, said that NO person of faith should EVER be permitted to serve in any government role or be elected to office. This is the attitude and philosophy of progressives. They believe that belief in God disqualifies a person from playing any role in government. We should therefore not be surprised at this news.
Mr. Kmiec appears to have turned a blind eye to the antagonism toward people of faith that progressives feel. Another writer on the Daily Kos last year said that all religions should be destroyed by the US government. This is just another example of this pervasive antagonism toward not only people of faith, but of God Himself! These people and their philosophies are inspired by the enemy of God, who is Satan.
I’m sad for Ambassador Kmiec, but his own refusal to recognize the reality of progressivism was a contributing factor in his renunciation by the Obama Administration. It is also further proof of the hatred this White House has for historical Christianity and for its founder, Jesus Christ himself!

Actually Colonel B., that’s really not true, at least in the American Catholic Church. Few Catholic bishops do anything to their members who openly support abortion. I can think of one bishop in
La Crosse Wisconsin a few years ago, but that’s about it. The Catholic Church was over run with Commies going into the seminary in the 1960′s & 70′s and these are now church leaders that enforce no church laws. The pose for holy pictures with the likes of Pelosi, Biden, Kerry & the Kennedy’s. The Catholic Church is as guilty as those baby killers are for allowing them to be members of the Church.
Also, that is NOT correct that the Catholic Church is the only church holding the line against abortion. I can think of 3 or 4 Lutheran Synods off the top of my head that would excommunicate someone like Pelosi in a heartbeat. (No, not the ELCA)

    Are you folks dead?
This action is exactly what I have been writing about on the Blaze for a while now. This believer in Christian doctrine was scathed publicly not for a disservice to his country but for his belief in Christian doctrine. The democratic – Marxist party is out to eliminate any and ALL Christian doctrine from the United States. Clinton is not a Christian, she’s a progressive, who believes in the doctrine of Marx and Engels. Oh, sure, she may attend a so called “Christian” church but rest assured that the church she attends, teaches the doctrine of Liberation theology, and not the doctrine of Christ. For its through the doctrine of Liberation Theology that the democratic – Marxists have subverted the Christian church systems of the United States.

So here we are again, at the altar of religious persecution, as yet one more believer in Christian doctrine is offered up for sacrifice by the believers in Marx & Engels doctrine. What is this mans crime? Believing in Christian doctrine? Wasn’t that covered in the 1st amendment to the constitution? “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” It appears as though this ambassador is the recipient of unjustified violation of his civil rights as an American citizen. He has the right to believe and exercise his religion, via the constitution of the United States and the US government has no right to punish him for the free exercise thereof.

But we have allowed the democratic – Marxists to lead our country at this point in time. And they see no fowl with eliminating every doctrine which does not align with their own. Yes, belief in Marx & Engels doctrine is a religion, just as Christianity is a religion. If you read the doctrine of Hegel which Marx and Engels based their doctrine upon, you will find that it includes a spiritual belief. In dictionary terms this is known as a theocracy. Just as Muslim countries mix religious belief with their political system, so do those who believe in the doctrines of Hegel – Marx & Engels. Socialism, Communism, Marxism, Leninism, Progressivism, they are all theocracies which are based on Greek Stoic doctrine. The apostle Paul warned of this doctrine in Colossians chapter 2. Americans should read it sometime. Preferably before they are assimilated into the doctrine of Hegel – Marx & Engels, pre persecuted for their beliefs just as this Ambassador has been.

The number 666 in Revelation 13 refers to the book of revelation boys and girls and yes it identifies a man. More accurately, it identifies the timing of a man. A man who’s name will be Christ Jesus, only as he is identified in Revelation 13, he is a fake.
We are given Signs of the end times in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21
Further we are given the events which lead up to these end times in the prophecy of Jeremiah 24 (already occurred) as well as Daniel 7,8 and 11.
The book of Revelation mentions 4 specific sets of activities
Seals = Seal the issue in your mind
      Trumpets = Action
Thunders = Which were not allowed to be written down
Vials = Punishment (the cup of wrath)
666 refers to the 6th seal, 6th trumpet, and 6th vial. In all of these, the fake Christ is identified. The true Christ is identified by 777 or 7th Seal, 7th Trumpet, 7th Vial. As its stated in Revelation 13: “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life of the lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” This word foundation is interesting, its katabolay in the Greek and it means to cast down or throw down. The first casting down is written in Revelation 12:4, where Satan rebelled against our Father in the 1st earth eon or age. The earth ages are written in 2nd Peter chapter 2.
Finally the False Christ is identified in 2nd Thessalonians Chapter 2:3. The word perdition used there is Apolia, which is the same name used in Revelaiton 9:11 to identify the king of the bottomless pit Apollyon.

      Gid,

Ummm.. no.. 2 million Catholics were slaughtered by the very anti-Christian nazis…
      and…
      http://www.catholic.com/library/HOW_Pius_XII_PROTECTED_JEWS.asp
The Pope secretly worked to save as many Jewish lives as possible from the Nazis, whose extermination campaign began its most intense phase only after the War had started. It is here that the anti-Catholics try to make their hay: Pius XII is charged either with cowardly silence or with outright support of the Nazi extermination of millions of Jews.

Much of the impetus to smear the Vatican regarding World War II came, appropriately enough, from a work of fiction—a stage play called The Deputy, written after the War by a little-known German Protestant playwright named Rolf Hochhuth.

The play appeared in 1963, and it painted a portrait of a pope too timid to speak out publicly against the Nazis. Ironically, even Hochhuth admitted that Pius XII was materially very active in support of the Jews. Historian Robert Graham explains: “Playwright Rolf Hochhuth criticized the Pontiff for his (alleged) silence, but even he admitted that, on the level of action, Pius XII generously aided the Jews to the best of his ability. Today, after a quarter-century of the arbitrary and one-sided presentation offered the public, the word ‘silence’ has taken on a much wider connotation. It stands also for ‘indifference,’ ‘apathy,’ ‘inaction,’ and, implicitly, for anti-Semitism.”[8]

Hochhuth’s fictional image of a silent (though active) pope has been transformed by the anti-Catholic rumor mill into the image of a silent and inactive pope—and by some even into an actively pro-Nazi monster. If there were any truth to the charge that Pius XII was silent, the silence would not have been out of moral cowardice in the face of the Nazis, but because the Pope was waging a subversive, clandestine war against them in an attempt to save Jews.

“The need to refrain from provocative public statements at such delicate moments was fully recognized in Jewish circles. It was in fact the basic rule of all those agencies in wartime Europe who keenly felt the duty to do all that was possible for the victims of Nazi atrocities and in particular for the Jews in proximate danger of deportation to ‘an unknown destination.’ “[9] The negative consequences of speaking out strongly were only too well known.

I was once in her, I know from personal experience that the everyday Catholic is underfed in the word of GOD because the church teaches that her people can’t understand the word and encourages her sheep not to read the word. I also know that within her are sheep who love the LORD despite their teachers ways, these will be called out by GOD. Much as GOD shall call out HIS people from Protestant church’s which by in large mirror Catholicism in one very important way, Sabbath keeping.
GOD created us for a Personal relationship with HIM, and how awesome is this.!
GOD speed, may He that breathed into you life, keep thee under His wing.

      @BetterDays

      Very well said !
I agree with you on these matters and just do not like when trying to bring The Truth into light I get more resistance from those that claim to have God and have Him all figured out. I am an avid reader and studier of the Scriptures and I could continue to do so for another hundred years and not be beyond the cover. The Word of God is so deep, multi faceted and timely that it still gives me goose bumps, and I hope that never stops.
The term Christians was given to people that followed The Way. It means Christ like or little christs.
We are also to have the mind of Christ. When Jesus spoke people moved. They either away from Him, followed Him or at Him, to kill and silence The Truth.
It is very easy to see where people fit into these same groups. So in the light of these I count myself worthy of God to be hated by man, and called a hater.

Well stated. “For if GOD be for us who can be against us?” And, I know no thing but Christ and Him crucified.“ and again ”I count all things as loss for the glory of the knowledge of Jesus Christ.”
I too shall go when my Savior calls, and GOD forbid I forsake Him.
One need only read the Word to determine who the Beast is, but perhaps that’s why the reading of Gods word is discouraged by the Beast? Having a form if Godliness but lacking ( the personal relationship and changing power) power thereof.

The worst kind of enemy is the one from within! This is a type of traitor hangs the loose robes of belief blatantly around his neck -and twists those beliefs. Take the Gidon guy, he claims that the Catholic church were Nazis supporters –not true. Not only was there no official position, but many convents and monasteries hid Jewish children and helped Jews to escape. Political correctness always twists history and beliefs to suit a given end.

      From Harretz.com…

Pope Pious XII saved thousands of Jews

New research has found that Pope Pius XII may have facilitated the exodus of about 200,000 Jews from Germany shortly after Kristallnacht, the Daily Telegraph reports.

New research has found that Pope Pius XII may have arranged the exodus of about 200,000 Jews from Germany just three weeks after Kristallnacht, the Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday.

The research is being carried out by Dr. Michael Hesemann, a German historian who is combing through the Vatican archives for the Pave the Way Foundation, a U.S.-based interfaith group.

Pope Pius XII has been widely criticized for his silence during the Holocaust and his failure to explicitly denounce the Holocaust, the Nazi regime or to excommunicate Hitler.

The new research, however, shows that the perception of Pius XII as “Hitler’s Pope” may be historically incorrect.

Kristallnacht, known as “The Night of Broken Glass”, took place on November 9-10, 1938. Ninety-one Jews in Germany and Austria were killed in anti-Jewish pogroms and tens of thousands were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Thousands of homes, buildings and synagogues were destroyed.

Hesemann said that Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli – the future Pius XII – wrote a letter on November 30, 1938, urging Catholic archbishops throughout the world to apply for visas for “non-Aryan Catholics” and Jewish converts to Christianity who wanted to flee Germany.

According to Hesemann, there is evidence that the visas would have been given to ordinary Jews and that the terms “converted Jews” and “non-Aryan Catholics” were a cover to prevent the Nazis from discovering the true purpose of the visas.

Elliot Hershberg, the chairman of the Pave the Way Foundation, was quoted in the Daily Telegraph report saying: “We believe that many Jews who were successful in leaving Europe may not have had any idea that their visas and travel documents were obtained through these Vatican efforts. Everything we have found thus far seems to indicate the known negative perception of Pope Pius XII is wrong.”

      @Thun

I am growing tired of you people. But as Paul said,” Do not become weary in well doing.”

The person you call the pope saves no one, Jesus alone saves. The pope, according to catholic doctrine, is the visible god on earth because the masses are too dumb to believe in an invisible god.

Stop giving me flack for telling the truth. The doctrine is a distraction.

Peter, who was not sent to Rome but to the Jews, turned from Jesus while walking on water and began to sink into the sea. The sea is depicted as not only physical but spiritual death throughout the Bible. He was distracted and was sinking and cried out for Jesus and Jesus saved him. Whosoever causes one of my little ones to stumble, it would better for him to have a milstone hung around his neck and cast into the sea.
      There is your message.

David said that we are not to turn to the left or the right. This means keep your eyes on Him and Him alone, Jesus.

If what is being said about a man called pope cutting a deal to rescue so many people were true it would not have been hidden for so long. The need for having acceptance from man and not God is too great in this denomination, and or sect, to hide or pass up.

If this man spearheaded Obama’s “outreach” to Catholic voters in 2008, he is a pseudo-Catholic. There are lots of them who have weazeled themselves into high places — academia being primary amongst them. Catholic University of America is a known hotbed of liberal Catholicism as is, unfortunately, Notre Dame; the university that gave Obama an honorary doctorate.

“In his letter to Clinton, Kmiec said the report was based on “unsupported speculation that someone doing as much writing as I have done could not have also been devoted to the embassy mission.”

IMHO, someone one who does as much golfing as the Obamanation does, can not be devoted to the American nation, and should resign. When attempts were made to reach the “unanointed ” one, it was discovered that he was golfing and could not comment. When attempts were made to set an appointment with the Golfer in chief, his personal secritary reported all dates are currently filled by golf, Bill Ayers, George Soros, and golf and could not be amended unless god the golfer said so.

Meanwhile in Heaven reports for requests for “ freak lightning strikes on a golf course” have spiked in the last two and a half years. GOD Himself has declined commentary directly, and of yet hasn’t issued any unique lightning strikes.

This is another fine example of the war against Christianity in the US. Socialist policies cannot be successful with Christians in the way. Now, had he been a Muslim, that would be an entirely different story. The left has successfully remade extremist Muslims as oppressed freedom fighters that must be protected from criticism and hate-speech. The tree-huggin’, granola munchin, Palestine supporting, Jew hating Marxist revolutionaries are at epidemic levels here in the US. Now they are publicly advocating the overthrow capitalism (read GOVERNMENT). The way I see it is that Christians AND Jews are in the way of both the current administration and Islam’s agendas. Islam is promoted IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS while Christian students are persecuted by ever growing anti-Christian school policies. The administration and it‘s supporting NGO’s are preparing a huge excrement sandwich for us all to eat.
