‘Countless’ Lives Endangered: U.S. Begs WikiLeaks to Halt Document Release

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration has told whistleblower WikiLeaks that its expected imminent release of classified State Department cables will put “countless” lives at risk, threaten global counterterrorism operations and jeopardize U.S. relations with its allies.

In a highly unusual step reflecting the administration’s grave concerns about the ramifications of the move, the State Department late Saturday released a letter from its top lawyer to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and his attorney telling them that publication of the documents would be illegal and demanding that they stop it.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

It also said the U.S. government would not cooperate with WikiLeaks in trying to scrub the cables of information that might put sources and methods of intelligence gathering and diplomatic reporting at risk.

The letter from State Department legal adviser Harold Koh was released as U.S. diplomats around the world are scrambling to warn foreign governments about what might be in the secret documents that are believed to contain highly sensitive assessments about world leaders, their policies and America’s attempts to lobby them.

In the letter, Koh said the publication of some 250,000 secret diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks, which is expected on Sunday, will “place at risk the lives of countless innocent individuals,” ”place at risk on-going military operations,“ and ”place at risk on-going cooperation between countries.”

“They were provided in violation of U.S. law and without regard for the grave consequences of this action,” he said. Koh said WikiLeaks should not publish the documents, return them to the U.S. government and destroy any copies it may have in its possession or in computer databases.

The State Department said Koh’s message was a response to a letter received on Friday by the U.S. ambassador to Britain, Louis Susman, from Assange and his lawyer, Jennifer Robinson. The department said that letter asked for information “regarding individuals who may be ‘at significant risk of harm’ because of” the release of the documents.

“Despite your stated desire to protect those lives, you have done the opposite and endangered the lives of countless individuals,” Koh wrote in reply. “You have undermined your stated objective by disseminating this material widely, without redaction, and without regard to the security and sanctity of the lives your actions endanger.”

He said the U.S government would not deal with WikiLeaks at all in determining what may or may not released.

“We will not engage in a negotiation regarding the further release or dissemination of illegally obtained U.S. government classified materials,” wrote Koh, who is considered to be one of the world’s top experts in international law and was reportedly considered for a seat on the Supreme Court.

WikiLeaks is expected to post the documents online on Sunday and Koh said the U.S. government had been told that The New York Times, the British newspaper the Guardian and the German news magazine Der Spiegel had prior access to them.

The release of Koh’s letter comes as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other top U.S. officials are reaching out to numerous countries about the expected WikiLeaks release.

Clinton spoke to leaders in China, Germany, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Britain, France and Afghanistan on Friday, according to State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. Canada, Denmark, Norway and Poland have also been warned.

The cables are thought to include candid assessments of foreign leaders and governments and could erode trust in the U.S. as a diplomatic partner.

Crowley said the release will place “lives and interests at risk. We are all bracing for what may be coming and condemn WikiLeaks for the release of classified material. It will place lives and interests at risk. It is irresponsible.”

Diplomatic cables are internal documents that would include a range of secret communications between U.S. diplomatic outposts and State Department headquarters in Washington.

WikiLeaks has said the release will be seven times the size of its October leak of 400,000 Iraq war documents, already the biggest leak in U.S. intelligence history.

The U.S. says it has known for some time that WikiLeaks held the diplomatic cables. No one has been charged with passing them to the website, but suspicion focuses on U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, an intelligence analyst arrested in Iraq in June and charged over an earlier leak.

As the release of documents is already underway it seems pointless to not engage Wikileaks to apply some filter to the docs. They have already been shared with several news organizations who may or may not filter them even while I suspect the government is trying to get them to use some discretion. It seems the same is appropriate for Wikileaks. Otherwise, maybe the dire emergency over the release is more about embarrassment than for the risk to lives of people. I suspect embarrassment is the motive.

Vilifying Wikileaks doesn’t address the treason that occured in releasing these documents in the first place. Nearly 500K already (?) and supposedly 2.1M with this coming release and hints of more to follow. Who released these and why?

Wiki is not a news agency! Many people are being killed because of these leaks. This is nothing but a terrorist group, trying to bring down america. Everyone envolved with wiki has to be immediately and permanantly stopped. By the time 2012 comes for us to vote in a new president, thousands of lives or more will be lost. We need to put pressure on the admin. we have now to stop this. We have thousands of illegals coming across our borders and the admin is doing nothing about that, and lives are being lost there. I never thought I would live long enough to see all this happen to america. The left has torn us apart.

Really? At least 250,000 Americans survived the war because of those, and that figure doesn’t even consider the tens of thousands of Allied POWs who would have been executed the moment the Marines landed on Japanese beaches. For that matter, survivors of the Okinawa battle have never quite forgiven Truman for not using them sooner.

There is no such thing as a DU bomb as your site claims. DU is used by armor units to defeat reactive armor from other tanks. The first Gulf War had extensive armor battles around Basra. There was no major armor battles in Gulf II. That is is sorriest excuse for propaganda I have seen. If you are going to stand by it you need to seriously educate yourself and not be fooled by something so baseless. And it was discovered that the people of Basra went out to the battlefield to loot and salvage anything they could. Thus a high exposure rate to DU and many other carcinogens found in tanks and all of the chemicals that they need to operate.

This makes perfect sense… first Obama goes on a world tour to apologizes for all the worlds evils and blame America for them. Now the governments next act is to “BEG” someone to not tell leak papers.

Whatever happened to the old days when a agent would simply go out and kill those wanting to harm America. Kick butt and take names has changed under the PC Progressive Obama to kiss butt and take blame.

the person or persons giving this info out is guilty of treason – pure and simple, couldnt be more clear.

Remember, it is still the goal of the Marxists in the Obama Administration (to include Obama himself) to destroy the American economy.

DO NOT ASK THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION FOR ANYTHING. “Top down, bottom up”, Van Jones said, remember?

Don’t lose focus. Press the Tea-Party-elected representatives to crush the Progressive agenda – it is entirely possible.

“Hand to hand fighting” Obama said of his plan for dealing with the Right-led Congress (most are Republican, but their party name is actually a bad thing for what we need the Right to do, since there are Progressives in the Republican party (RINOs).

Isn’t what Wikileaks is doing called “reckless endangerment”? The Attorney General of the state harboring Wikileaks should check this out. There may not be a federal law regarding “reckless endangerment”. If there is, Holder should do his job! I guess that’s not likely ;).

      @The Blazers (many topics)

Kennedy sanctioned the assassination of Diem; Ford by executive order made the sanctioned assassination of national leaders illegal in non-war times; Carter gutted the CIA, and Regan used Casey to restore it for the most part (Suggested reading is “Casey and the CIA ”; understand that the man Casey indeed was a master of desception and spin, so take the direct statements of Casey with a dose of speculation and skepticism)

Whoever is leaking this classified info out, like the other times, most likely is coming from very high up in the administration – and probably has the sanctioning approval of Mr Obama as well. He is going to use this as one more step to bring down our country.

So many here are calling for assassination/bombing and other violence against WikiLeaks, when it is not WikiLeaks that is the problem. Should the government have killed Woodward & Bernstein? Bombed their newspaper building?

Most regular posters here know from my posting history that I’m no Progressive/Liberal apologist by any stretch of the imagination. However, the anger here is misplaced and many of you are un- or mis-informed regarding WikiLeaks itself and the releases of US secrets.

Surprisingly, WL actually did a creditable job in “sanitizing” the last batch of leaks (much better than our government has done with FOIA “redactions”, for one of many examples). No informants/agents have been killed due to the previous publication, and only 3 informant’s names were released which were largely irrelevant due to previous death, or plain irrelevance due to events & people having moved on making the release of those names meaningless.

The fault here is purely with the US government’s security incompetence and also in the poor job the US has done diplomatically to generate the situations in the first place that result in embarrassing actions and statements existing to be leaked.

That is, unless you think that news sources in the US that publish leaked information from, for example, the TSA should be attacked and the reporters assassinated.

Calm down and get a grip, fellow Blazers. The problem here is decades of Progressive influence on our foreign relations/diplomacy, our security/intelligence community, and America in general.

WL & Assange are merely the messenger. The information was already leaked and in the hands of any foreign government that wanted it *long* before WL received it. WL just made sure that *WE* got to see it as well.

I urge caution here as this outrage can, and probably will, be used to further government control of the internet and restrict what may be published and by whom.

      Watch the other hand, people!

For those who watch the news via world-wide outlets, there is very little in these documents that is new or that wasn’t/couldn’t have been easily surmised. An embarrassment? Yes. However, every country in the world has Foreign Affairs and Intelligence ministries that do and say the same things with/about other countries; the U.S. just got caught. Anyone that has followed my blog posts and commentaries for the past 7 years about many of these stories (and their relevance to other stories) already knew much of this. The leaks are merely a validation of those; big deal.

The real National Security issue here is not so much what was released; those incidents all happened in the past. The problem is that the U.S. got caught… again, because even this isn’t a new story. What it means is that other countries will be less trusting in sharing intelligence information with us… and that makes us less safe. Sure, if Britain had intelligence about an impending attack, they would still share it. But the preponderance of intelligence is not so straight forward. It is derived from small bits of information from various places; a piece from Pakistan or Afghanistan, a piece from Yemen, a piece from Turkey, a piece from Spain, etc. After having been embarrassed, will they still trust us to safeguard their information and not embarrass them, or place them in jeopardy with other nations… again?

How is it that our intelligence apparatus has been so denigrated in the past several years that a single person(???) could have had access to not only the Defense Department documents leaked earlier, but also documents now from the State Department, two separate entities? In “my day”, such access by one person would have been unthinkable, and virtually impossible (at least very highly improbable), unless it was at some of the highest levels of an agency. The fact that it is no longer that way is extremely disturbing.

On top of this, with the policies implemented in the last couple of years, we’ve effectively told our CIA to do their job with both hands tied behind their backs; my gosh, they aren’t even allowed to interrogate people anymore… told them that if they have to do something illegal to get that critical piece of intelligence that will forewarn us of an attack, that we’ll prosecute them; as if it weren’t bad enough that what they do as a primary job is illegal everywhere they do it anyway. Hopefully we haven’t forced away all of the brave folks that put country before self… but after the fiasco of worse than “rookie” mistakes made in Afghanistan that led to a half dozen of our agents & contractors being killed, I do worry about who is being put in the field.

All that aside, I guess I do need to trust the government with the security of the nation and feel safe; after all, they’re groping my junk at the airport. I guess that’s all that really counts.
