U.S. Called ‘Immoral’, Canada ‘Laggard’ at International Climate Conference

U.N. Climate Talks Get Ugly With Name Calling, U.S. Immoral and Enemy Number One

(Photo via American Independent)

There is some name calling going on as climate talks continue at the United Nation’s 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) in Durban, South Africa. The American Independent reports that the United States was called “immoral” and “enemy number one”, and Canada referred to as a “laggard country.”

Canada was met with disapproval by some when it decided to abandon the Kyoto Protocol, because of extremely unsuccessful emission reductions. The Kyoto Protocol called for emissions to be lowered 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2012 with efforts starting in 2005. The American Independent states that emissions are up 30 percent compared to those emitted in 1990.

Some talks involve extending the protocol, but some countries, including the United States, are reluctant to sign an agreement just yet.

Here is more about what’s being said according to the American Independent:

At a well-attended briefing Tuesday morning held by NGO umbrella organization Climate Action Network, Bishop Geoff Davies, executive director of the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute, highlighted what he saw as the contradiction inherent in the fact that the people of the United States are deeply religious but also alienated from the responsibility faith demands to address suffering tied to climate-altering pollution.

“The US is a nation of great faith, of Christian commitment. We find it extraordinary that they are behaving like this. We find it immoral,” he said when a Turkish journalist asked what additional pressure could be brought to bear on the world’s lone superpower. “Environmental destruction is a sin against God. We say to faith groups in the U.S.: You’ve got to recognize your responsibilities to combat climate change.”

[...]

Jim Leape, director general of World Wildlife Fund, called the negotiations “a huge failure of ambition on the part of governments.” He said that a delay in ratifying the Kyoto Protocol would be “binding ourselves to a 4-degree world.”

So far, there isn’t enough support outside of the countries in the European Union to extend the protocol. The American Independent reports that the U.S. is trying delay a new agreement until 2020. China has also said it would be in favor of signing a new agreement then but has stipulations that the United States wouldn’t agree to. The New York Times reports contention between the two countries on details of this deal have emerged, frustrating some in attendance:

Todd D. Stern, the American climate change envoy, said that the United States would be happy to discuss a formal treaty at some future date and then spelled out his conditions, which also were not new and appeared to rule out any sort of deal like that envisioned by Mr. Xie.

For a legally binding agreement to take hold, “it’s going to be absolutely critical that it applies to all the major players, and China obviously is one of them,” Mr. Stern said at a briefing.

“All the major players are going to have to be in with obligations, with commitments that have the same legal force,” he added. “And that means there’s no conditionality, they’re not conditional on receiving technology or financing, there’s no trap doors, there’s no Swiss cheese in that kind of an agreement.”

The continuing dispute between the United States and China, the two largest sources of the carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming, has come to be an enduring feature of these negotiations and a source of deep frustration for the other players.

Jo Leinen, the German Social Democrat who leads the delegation from the European Parliament, lashed out at both superpowers on Wednesday afternoon.

“What is really frustrating to see is this conference is again hijacked by the Ping-Pong game between the U.S. and China,” he said. “It is unacceptable and no more tolerable that this game is blocking the overall process. Now that China has done some moves, let’s test their seriousness. I don’t see the same commitment, the same signals from the U.S. The one is not yet ready; the other is not willing. We really have a problem.”

The American Independent reports GreenPeace Executive Director Kumi Naidoo as saying that the U.S. government is confusing the world and its citizens when it puts the interests of “polluters” above that of people. Naidoo wrote in an opinion piece posted by the Huffington Post today that the U.S.’s stance in the discussions is destructive and is calling for it to “stand aside and let those who are willing to move ahead [...] in agreeing to a climate saving deal.”

An extremely wasteful, present-hedonistic minded civilization has emerged in a blink of Earth time, providing us with many luxuries and advancements but also favoring disposability. The commoditization of Nature and rapid use of it’s resources are antithetical to the imaginary infiniteness of capitalist theory. Unsustainable as it is, many people have earned great wealth doing so. Some of these Successes have invested in opposing a reevaluation of resource management in light of scientific breakthroughs in geosciences. Some have propagandized complicated subjects in TV and print. Some (Koch Ind.) have funded (AFP) a subculture (Tea Party) that plays right into their hands, and rallies for the ship to continue to sink.
C’mon people. This shouldn’t be political. People who’ve earned great wealth mining coal, oil, gas know it’s much harder to capitalize on the sun or wind. People who compare increased production of cheaper and less durable products to the better healthier communities are delusional.
What’s so wrong with discussing alternative ways to live on and use the Earth? Besides having to swallow your pride and admit you were once on the wrong side of the fence..

I am very concerned about this CHICKEN LITTLE nonsense. Let me get this straight: CO2 which is a vital part of the Plant-Animal interdependency is killing all of us? And the answer is not to pass an simple law like a single standard for cell phone recharging chords which would prevent makers of cell phones from pricing a small bit of wire at $30-$50 when you buy the jPhone 8.0 because unless you but that little piece of wire, you won’t be able to charge that brand new version of what is really just an, ahem, adult toy? No, that can‘t be the answer to capitalism’s “externalities” now could it? No, the answer is forced sterilization of Crackers like me who don’t buy cellphones. Sorry Libs, both Alex Jones AND Glenn Beck outed that little “conspiracy theory” as CONSPIRACY FACT! So stop trying to sell us rednecks on the importance of climate change. We are well aware that if you had your way I wouldn’t be allowed outdoors at all… No, that not right, I know that if you had your way, I wouldn’t be allowed to BREATHE at all!!!

Hey, BIBLE…, you say that “scientists of the world agree.” On what, exackatackaly? They agree that the climate changes – duh. Go check out the emissions (recorded daily) of Kilauea’s CO2 and SO2 daily output (google it); in a little over a year it produces as much of these gases as the whole of the US in a year, sans transportation. Doesn’t just that fact make you, as an obvious non-scientist, raise an eyebrow? Or, how about the flash frozen plants being exposed by melting glaciers in Peru? There are many, many more of these examples that make me believe (as a scientist), that man-made global warming is a scam. Doesn’t mean I want more pollution, does mean I’m that I prefer the truth as it allows me to better prepare.

MauiJonny, What I don’t get is the scam conclusion that you and pigpen come to. Who is doing the scamming? 2020 scenario: America has reconstructed its power grid to be efficient geographically, Wind on the coasts, sparse Hydroelectric in riparian locations, geothermal, tidal, and solar in the south and southwest plus solar on all newly created buildings. Food is grown and eaten as locally as possible, packaging is decomposable when possible and products are made to last. China, goaded by strict environmental standards in trade agreements, emulates America. America creates millions of jobs doing this and our children don’t have to eat ConAgra Chemical Corn. The Big Oil Industries are getting scammed? The American people are getting scammed by large-scale public projects? You can believe it’s a scam because volcanoes “pollute” too, just know that the population of volcanoes isn’t exactly growing at the rate of human population. Most of the World agrees about how dire the situation is, Americans are kinda a sad joke to outsiders; We consume and pollute well beyond the per-person average and act childish when sience says we need to go on an oil-diet.

There is great news on the horizon on the issue of Climate Change. There is a new pact that is being pledged to by Climate Change activists in which they will lead by example and pledge not to use any product or service created or supported in any way by Global Warming energy sources. So they will not use the internet, computers, phones, cars, horses, farm animals, vegetables grown by any use of fossil fuels or anything even remotely connected with the creation of green house gasses even the creation of methane by animals.
I think that they will then serve as a non-hypocritical example of what the followers of their cause should be doing everyday in their lives.
When people begin to see their great example and start seeing the accuracy of their future weather predictions and even begin using the Climate Change Farmers Almanac to plant their crops and take their vacations then the movement will gain steam.
Most people that are ignored at first soon get respect when their predictions come true. They have predicted what the temperature of the earth will be to within one half of a degree one hundred years from now. That is a truly amazing accomplishment. When people see year after year that they are within one tenth or one one hundredth of a degree of the true temps of the earth then the respect they deserve will be finally awarded.
The only bad thing is that we will miss them here on the blaze as they live by example and stop using electricity created by fossil fuels.

One other point I would like to make is how other countries are light years ahead of us in their respect for the environment. I have spent time in Europe, Brazil, Scandinavia. Mexico. North and South Korea and other areas of the planet. Our treatment of the environment is a joke compared to places like Mexico, Brazil, and China. Brazil is almost totally green environmentally speaking compared to the us. When you travel there as I have you will see first hand the amazing respect that the people there have for the environment. It is truly astonishing. People that have been there and other places like it that are the leaders of the green movement understand perfectly where we stand as a country in comparison.

Socialism ruins the economic climate by making it harder to serve needs through mutual exchange. The basic unit of economic activity, regardless of the type of economy, involves taking something of little or no value and turning it into something of increased value. Capitalism rewards this activity while socialism degrades the reward system over time by finding fault and eventually punishing whatever is considered excessive profit in the transaction. Our school system takes a child and turns him or her into a fool. Then, society is forced to pay for the illegitimate or counterfeit increase in worth of the child. Similar circulation of counterfeit benefits have been polluting our economic environment since the community reinvestment act and antics of Barney frank and Cris Dodd. Everything that he eco-freaks want to do cost real capital and that won’t be available until the counterfeit portion is wrung out of the economy. I hope the other environment does not suffer but, I see no other choice. We are BROKE.
