U.S. Gets a Scolding from U.N. Human Rights Council

For the first time on Friday, the United States subjected itself to some harsh criticisms from friends and foes alike among the 47 nations sitting on the United Nations Human Rights Council. The U.S. took the criticism in stride with a high-level delegation of around 30 officials led by Esther Brimmer, the assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs.
Among the chief critics and first in line at the podium to speak out: Cuba, Iran, Russia, North Korea and Venezuela, whose delegates reportedly camped out overnight to secure their spot behind the podium.
Cuban ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodriguez called on the U.S. to end its blockade of the island country, calling it a “crime of genocide.” In addition, it condemned the U.S. for “violations against migrants and mentally ill persons” and called on America to “ensure the right to food and health” for all citizens.
Iran’s delegation demanded the U.S. “halt serious violations of human rights and humanitarian law including covert external operations by the CIA carried out on pretext of combating terrorism.” The Islamic nation — currently poised to stone a woman for alleged adultery charges — told the United States it needed to “combat violence against women.”
North Korea, a dictatorial nation known to starve its own people, told the U.S. “to address inequalities in housing, employment and education” and “prohibit brutality…by law enforcement officials.” The delegation also noted that it was “concerned by systematic widespread violations committed by the United States at home and abroad.”
Libya accused the U.S. of systematic “racism, racial discrimination and intolerance.”
The criticism didn‘t only come from America’s foes. Countries like the United Kingdom and France condemned the United States for its allowance of capital punishment. Still, Assistant Secretary Brimmer told the council that “it is an honor to be in this chamber.”
Many of the UNHRC’s accusations, however, seem to accurately reflect a characterization of the council’s activities offered by former American ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton who warned against joining the council. According to Bolton, Friday’s self-inflicted scolding from the international community underscored the Obama administration’s “naivete” toward international diplomacy.
“For the Obama administration, this is an exercise in self flagellation, which they seem to enjoy,” Bolton said. “But it doesn’t prompt equivalent candor from the real rights abusers.”
Meanwhile, the Obama administration defends its decision to voluntary subject the U.S. to such criticisms:
The administration has engaged in an intensive effort, including holding town hall meetings with Muslims, Native Americans, African Americans and other minority groups, to assess the extent of domestic rights violations. In August, it gave the U.N. rights council a 22-page report documenting U.S. abuses, including practices by federal and local police and corrections and immigration officials, and defending President Obama’s counter-terrorism policies. Friday’s meeting provided the first opportunity for states to comment on the report.
“Our progress has not been linear, but in the story of the United States, the arc of history has bent toward justice,” said Michael Posner, assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor. “As our report acknowledges, though we are proud of our achievements, we are not satisfied with the status quo.”
That “status quo,” according to the Obama administration, has included the United States’ “long history of rights abuse.”
“For the United States, our early years witnessed profound gaps between our ideals and practice, including slavery, the treatment of Native Americans and limited franchise,” Brimmer said. “Yet our own history has been one of progress, built on a strong foundation of fundamental freedoms of speech, association and religion, as foundation for building a ‘more perfect Union.’”
Nicaragua’s Carlos Robelo Raffone also condemned the U.S. for sins of the past, but insisted America has made little progress. “The United States of America, since its very origin, has used force indiscriminately as the central pillar of its policy of conquest and expansionism, causing death and destruction,” Raffone told his U.N. colleagues Friday. “We would like to forget the past, but unfortunately the United States of America — which pretends to be the guardian of human rights in the world, questioning other countries — has been and continues to be the one which most systematically violates human rights.”
But the UNHRC forum was not only an opportunity for America’s foreign neighbors to deride the U.S. Some 300 domestic non-govermental organizations (NGOs) also seized on the opportunity to criticize their own government using the international stage.
Antonio Ginatta of the New York-based group Human Rights Watch told the council the U.S. “grossly” violates its citizens’ human rights: “U.S. officials were often reduced to restating current practices that grossly violate human rights, like the death penalty, poor prison conditions and sentencing youth offenders to life without parole.”
Further, Amnesty International condemned the U.S. for its use of enhanced interrogation techniques. “These recommendations must be at the heart of rebuilding the United States’ human rights record,” it said in a statement.
Appearing on Russia Today from the conference in Geneva, Chandra Bhatnagar of the American Civil Liberties Union also spoke about America’s use of “torture” and insisted those who approve and carry out the intelligence-gathering technique must be prosecuted:
In response to these accusations from Americans and other nations, Harold Koh, a U.S. State Department legal adviser told the U.N. council: “Let there be no doubt, the United States does not torture and it will not torture.” And while some countries lambasted the U.S. and the Obama administration for not carrying through on the president’s promise to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Koh simply responded that “the president cannot close Guantanamo alone,” and any effort to do so would require assistance from Congress, the courts and foreign allies willing to take in released detainees.
Ambassador Bolten isn‘t alone in criticizing the Obama administration’s willingness to expose the country to such criticism, however. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., a Cuban-American congresswoman likely to become the next chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also criticizes the move away from President George W. Bush’s precedent of ignoring the UNHRC. “So long as the inmates are allowed to run the asylum, the Human Rights Council will continue to stand in the way of justice, not promote it,” she said in a statement Friday. “The U.S. should walk out of this rogues’ gallery and seek to build alternative forums that will actually focus on abuses and deny membership to abusers.”
In the end it was the German delegation — not the American envoy — who most vocally scolded the critics of the U.S. “We have noted with interest that some of states which are on the first places of today’s speakers list had spared no effort to be the first to speak on the U.S.,” said Germany’s delegate, Konrad Scharinger. “We would hope that those states will show the same level of commitment when it comes to improving their human rights record at home.”

Posted on November 6, 2010 at 9:27amYes, it is in tough times and tough circumstances that we all see who are true friends are. Where was Obama’s new best friend, France? UK and Israel probably kept quiet since O has done everything in his power to alienate them. Now I see the real reason, Hilary was out of the country and far away while this stick and carrot show was going on. I guess this is another example of O getting the message sent on Nov 2nd in his own Chicago Rev Wright Bill Ayers way–we haven’t appreciated the wonders of all his worldwide apology tours, so he got some of his true friends to do it for him.
Report Post »I feel the UN stands for Useless Nitwits. Just look which member nations are on the human rights committee, the women’s rights committee…I guess they feel that they should follow the O policy of extending an open hand and wave the magic wand and all the problems will just disappear and everything will be hunky-dory in la-la land. Let me share one example from personal experience of the “wonders” of the UN. While working in West Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer, one day a rather large-3,000 sq ft building started to be built across from my house. I thought it was going to be a new office for the regional mayor, but he informed me that it was going to be the home of the new UN agricultural agent. I met the man a few days later when he called me over to assist in translating for him. The man was from South Africa, spoke no French (the official language) nor Dioula (the commercial language) so the UN hired two interpreters for him. He was a civil engineer that had no experience in agriculture whatsoever. He was tasked with setting up agricultural cooperatives to grow cash crops-apples, pears, and grapes. They grow mainly in temperate areas, whereas his locations was tropical-just 1 degree above the equator. In the “winter” temps would drop into the 70′s overnight. He got quite a bit of resistance from the farmers since he was given the best land for the planting, but he labored on. He told me one day that he was clearing the land and would soon start the planting. Two problems: 1. Neither he nor any of his laborers knew anything about planting those crops and 2. He was planning to start the plantings at the beginning of the long rainy season when it typically rains, read tropical downpours, every day for 4 or more hours. Needless to say, the first attempt was a total and complete failure. He labored on and tried the same methodology for 3 years and in the end, there was a lot of tropical rainforest clearcut, but no crops and no agricultural cooperatives. Did the UN learn anything from that lesson? No, they simply moved him and the project to another area and tried planting in the same area as the coffee and cocoa farms. It still didn’t work and about the only positive result is that the South African became fairly wealthy. Just one example of the “value” of your tax dollars at work at the UN.

Anyone who lives in the us and does not like it should be given a one way paid ticket to any country on earth. Myron Fagan
For a long time I felt that FDR had developed many thoughts and ideas that were his own to benefit this country, the United States. But, he didn’t. Most of his thoughts, his political ammunition, as it were, were carefully manufactured for him in advanced by the Council on Foreign Relations-One World Money group. Brilliantly, with great gusto, like a fine piece of artillery, he exploded that prepared “ammunition” in the middle of an unsuspecting target, the American people, and thus paid off and returned his internationalist political support.
“The UN is but a long-range, international banking apparatus clearly set up for financial and economic profit by a small group of powerful One-World revolutionaries, hungry for profit and power.
“The depression was the calculated ‘shearing’ of the public by the World Money powers, triggered by the planned sudden shortage of supply of call money in the New York money market….The One World Government leaders and their ever close bankers have now acquired full control of the money and credit machinery of the U.S. via the creation of the privately owned Federal Reserve Bank.”

Posted on November 6, 2010 at 3:33amThis article got it all wrong. Obama purposefully joined the UNHRC in March 2009, to align himself with commies and Muslims around the world. They can now voice their hatred against America, and Obama will be quick to take “corrective measures.” It will allow him to freely plot against our country with his buddies in tyranny. Eventually, he will openly take their side
One of the goals this year was to pass a resolution that denounced the “defamation of religion” as a human rights violation, a move intended to protect Muslims from the alleged persecution they have suffered since 9/11, as well as to condemn the ban on the construction of minarets passed by Switzerland in Nov. of last year. The only religion protected by this resolution is Islam. Although the U.S. officially condemned the resolution, it passed on a narrow 20-17 vote. Here’s my question: We saw Obama’s reaction to the building of the GZ mosque, so who do you think he PRIVATELY supported (recall how he always votes Present when politically expedient).
Make no mistake, America. That Traitor-in-Chief revels in all the vitriol against America. Heck, he himself opened the door so all the America-haters could take turns spitting in our face in his stead.

Posted on November 6, 2010 at 7:15amNO…. WRONG MOVE…. (with respect)
Consider the following alternative, at risk of any standing I may have had on this BLOG, BTW….!
We currently have a veto in the UN, it’s relatively cheap, and we can stop the construction of the Military Forces they want to build. They need their OWN military to implement domination at some point down the road. WE MUST STOP THAT! (By ANY and ALL means!)
I would advocate, that we want them to stay right here in the US, especially the HQ… We WANT to stay in the Security Counsel where we can veto any world GVT attempt, especially one with a military at it’s disposal. HELLO? THINK….!!! We can watch them using our FBI and “others” resources when they are right here in the US, we won’t have that ability if they move to Geneva. We have access to all the message traffic that comes in, we can watch where they go, who they talk to, we have access to all of it…. When they’re here in the US…
Moving them out is not the correct action to take. KEEPING THEM CLOSE… is smarter and ultimately cheaper. For example, REMEMBER… the “homeless” problem? That came about when the Leftist triangulated an attack launched in the 70s. Conservatives trying to fight wasted money, and Liberals feeling bad for people held in lousy places against their will (literally, even though it was for their own good). Those two factions working together, “freed” a slug of people and now they walk around with no place to stay and a PERMANENT issue for the Leftist to manipulate within the body politic. STUPID!
WHAT WE MUST DO… in order to stop “One World Government”, is not throwing the UN out of the U.S., THAT WON’T STOP IT ANYWAY!!! It’ll keep going if it’s moved to Geneva…. That doesn’t solve the problem, it only make it’s harder to solve for those interested in a sovereign America.
I submit that, we can not get rid of the UN altogether, too many bad-guys have been allowed in and see how effective it can be when employed as a shield for them working together; we CAN NOT let it stand ALONE in control of the globe either, THAT IS THEIR GOAL!?!?!?!? (DON’T HELP THEM FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!??!?!?!)
So what is the solution? It’s setting up a new “Counter Organization” so that they can NEVER…. Have ONE Organization (the UN, or the UN by another name) in control over the whole of the globe. When there are TWO Organizations, IT’S NOT ONE…! IT’s two equals with NO OTHER echelon that is higher! (That’s why they hate God BTW)
The ONLY viable working option is to create a NEW organization they can’t join (because they lack qualifications), and can’t stop from being created. THEN…. There is no ONE World GVT…. We need to create a “Federation of Republics” or something similar that offers the advantage of membership, and the ability to keep a SINGLE control point from forming. If you create TWO, you can’t have one in control….
WE HAVE TO BE SMART, and though it would be emotionally satisfying to boot the UN, it’s not the smart move, and more importantly, it won’t achieve anything to stop it, it only help them achieve THEIR goal. We stay in it to STOP IT from militarizing, and we create a new competitor to keep it from growing. We put our efforts in forming republican organizations (the ultimate weapon in defense) and use it to incentivize and grow new republics in the place of old regiems.
NOW THAT… is smarter and actually will work.

Posted on November 6, 2010 at 12:11pmWe can’t ever allow liberals to projects these lies and images without consequences.
The story needs to be told of how the Democratic Party came into existence in the first place. Take a little time to research the roles of Martin Van Buren and Andrew Jackson; of how their deceptions and the use of political correctness prolonged slavery in the US and how it was they, the Democratic Party that led the charge in removing the Cherokee, Creek and Seminole on the Trail of Tears . . . Learn the real history; the truth of how the Democratic Party acted on their own to massacre native Americans, disregard them as savages despite the Cherokee nation being quite civilized and advanced, even “Americanized” in some regards at the time. The Democratic Party wanted the land to allow the expansion of the south, of slavery; so they took it.
Reference the Cherokee Nation vs. Georgia 1831, but don’t look on the web; it’s full of liberal slants and distortions. Check out the Heritage Foundation for a list of history books that deal with the truth.
And while you’re in there looking at 1820 thru 1860 pay close attention to what liberals did to the banking system then . . . You just might find some parallels there; as in the history of liberalism here in the US, of who is guilty of much more than they would like anyone to know over the course of time.
Theirs is a foundation of lies . . .

Posted on November 6, 2010 at 3:03pmNo problem, let us know how bad we are. Just wondering, which country is up next?
I‘ve got plenty of suggestions as I’m sure my fellow Patriots here do as well.
We need to use this as a reminder the next time a tsunami, earthquake, or any other natural disaster happens and the world comes to us with their hand out. Politely decline to drive our own country further into debt and tell them to go ask China. Or michael moore. Or oprah. Or bill gates. Or george soros.

Posted on November 6, 2010 at 4:44pmIVillageidiot,
What you propose is not viable. First, we are practically alone. Second, it would be viewed as a fascist move. We can‘t just tell a nation they cannot join because they aren’t qualified, and attempting to create such an organization would destabalize our fragile world peace.
Our problem is that we’ve got a commie in the WH who will use the HRC against us. He already filed a human rights violation complaint against Arizona with the UNHRC, a shocking first in our national history. As I said before, the UNHRC is controlled by Muslims and commies. Practically all their resolutions pre-Obama have consisted of attacks against Israel. Now that Obama has joined, we are a target as well.
If we had a patriot for president, we would continue Bush’s course of action, namely, to boycott the HRC and withdraw our financial support. They would also have to spew their trash against us from Geneva (and don’t worry, we kept track of what they were up to).
I do agree 100% that we cannot withdraw from the UN. We need to be able to veto and pass resolutions, i.e., to have a say in what happens in the world. Again, the real problem is Obama.

Posted on November 6, 2010 at 8:49pmDefund and close down the U.N. Then, when the next natural tragedy hits their nation they can kiss our american hind-ends when they start asking us for money. I am appalled that a US President would intentionally subject America to this kind of criticism after everything we do for others. Do have problems, yes. Are we perfect, no. But there’s no bette place to live. This President needs to be impeached for failing to carry out the oath of the office.

Posted on November 6, 2010 at 10:46pmYup, the UN wants to come into the united states and dictate our lives and government. Obama and his cronies do not have the cajones to stand up and tell them to step off. Obama, instead, will agree with them and apologize for America. 2012. Maybe then we can get a REAL leader for the country.

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 1:12pmAnd yet, despite all those allegations the US is (at least for now) still the leader of the world where people flock to get in and have a hope of succeeding with their life. How many other countries can really say that? sorry UN. maybe you have a point, but with out the US, you’re nothing. With out us, your strength is arbitrary. There is a reason the US is the majority leader. we’re the ones that are willing to actually take actions instead of sit back and debate until the problem is beyond control.
