U.S. Launches Coalition to Reduce Short Lived Pollutants Contributing to Climate Change

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced thursday that the United States would be joining a coalition to reduce certain man-made pollutants, which some scientists say contribute to global warming.

Other countries joining the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Live Pollutants, which will be run by the United Nation’s Environment Program, include Bangladesh, Canada, Mexico, Sweden and Ghana. AFP reports Clinton saying the program will target black carbon, methane and hydrofluorocarbons:

“We know that in the principal effort necessary to reduce the effects of carbon dioxide, the world has not yet done enough,” Clinton told an audience at the State Department that included envoys from the coalition countries.

“So when we discover effective and affordable ways to reduce global warming — not just a little, but by a lot — it is a call to action for all of us,” Clinton said.

“This coalition, the first international effort of its kind, will conduct a targeted, practical and highly energetic global campaign to spread solutions to the short-lived pollutants worldwide,” she added.

“It will mobilize resources, assemble political support, help countries develop and implement a national action plan, raise public awareness, and reach out to other countries, companies, NGOs and foundations.”

The New York Times reports that the U.S. is contributing $12 million to the initiative, which hopes to reduce so called “short-lived” pollutants that account for 30 to 40 percent of global warming. Canada also contributed $3 million to the effort. According to the Times these funds will help kickstart the initiative and recruit other countries. It also states that some money will be provided to developing countries to help them reduce these types of pollutants:

Drew T. Shindell, a senior climate scientist at NASA’s Goddard Institute on Space Studies, said that attacking short-lived climate agents could have immediate impacts.

“From a political point of view,” he said, “what’s really appealing about these measures is that a lot of the benefits are realized by those that take the action. If you reduce these emissions in the developing world, it’s the developing world that gets most of the benefits, by stabilizing rainfall and improving public health.”

The Times reports Todd Stern with the State Department’s “special envoy for climate change” as saying this “voluntary partnership” is expected to produce results quickly. More specifically, according to scientists, efforts from this program could reduce 0.5 degrees Celsius by 2050. As these pollutants are also associated with health ailments, the program also hopes to prevent prevent millions of cases of lung and heart disease by 2030.

According to AFP initiative looks to reduce the following: methane, like that from landfills and the agriculture industry; black carbon, which comes from kilns and diesel vehicles; and chemicals emitted from aerosols, refrigerants and insulating foam.

AFP reports Clinton as saying the program is not meant to override a more international and larger effort to curb global warming, but to “complement” it.

    Unless we get all countries invlolved and I mean ALL this will never work! While some are reducing the rest are polluting too! Tired of this! Besides the fact that I do not believe in global warming at all! And the scientists behind that said they lied! Come on people!!!!

      I think the biggest producers have not jumped on the band wagon – China and India. They only seem to participate when they are on the receiving end and get $$$.

      Why would anything work when it’s based on fraud/junk/suspect data and research? Maybe China and India know something we don’t?

      The earth is not a computer model, it it not a laboratory project, it is the victim of global climate/warming/freezing nutters.

    The country is broke so they are essentially borrowing the money.. as they borrow .40 cents of every dollar they spend. So in the end they are spending, er, stealing way more than $12 million when the interest is tacked on. Tacked onto the backs of the taxpayers.. that is. How much do YOU owe the government now..       I hold firm in being responsible when it comes to taking care of the earth!! That being said, global warming and the organizations pushing it are SCAMS! Take a month (because that’s how long it took me ) and read “ALL” of the U.N.s Agenda 21. Also the minutes from last years meeting of the U Ns top people, 63 I think, that said, we must take America down if we are to succeed! Yes, take America down! Also mentioned were China and India, If people have even 1/4 of a brain, they will come to the same conclusion I did. A scam to bilk trillions and take control of EVERYTHING! If you think I am crazy just check out the maps they created with over %50 of America as “HUMAN FREE” zones. And also note they have spent nearly 1/2 billion$$$ in this country. Construction of “HUMAN HABITATS” near rail roads. Oh yea, no more property ownership, everybody lives in “HUMAN HABITATS” near RR tracks and main highways because “NO MORE CARS” only mass transit.       Sane…..I haven’t read my copy of A-21 yet. I decided to read 3 books on the UN as background before reading my A-21 copy.
      We did have a brilliant speaker at our last Tea Party meeting who spoke for an hour + on A-21.
      I never heard an interruption from the 300+ in attendance. He was that good! His evidence was ironclad.
      He had the softbound copy of the Agenda 21 conference held in Rio back in 1992. As well, he had 3 other books produced by UN operatives which succeeded the original softbound copy from Rio. Each succeeding book was larger, with the last about 2 inches thick. One of those was the one that says Agenda 21 on the cover. I’m guessing it was the one you read.

      I know that Americans are ignorant of the plans of taking of property rights from them, and are totally unaware of the plans to move us to population centers. There are very very few areas where we would be allowed to live other than those pop centers.
      I would say that anyone who wants to be really frightened of our (and world) government should read anything they can get their hands on regarding the UN, its founding, its members, and the plans they have for your rights.
      G HW Bush agreed in principle with the RIO conference, but Clinton AND Obama have signed Exec Ord’s to implement A-21 in the US. This is serious and REAL!

      Though GHW Bush did not sign any Exec Ord committing the US to A-21, he did give a quasi endorsement.

    12 million? That’s not much when progressives are stealing that amount. That’s barely enough to provide golden parachutes for 2-3 bottom-feeders that currently find themselves within the “inner circle”.

    That’s all these people really accomplish with all their nonsense. The taxpayer gets fleeced, while a select few become very wealthy.

    She may be off soon to the World Bank, better push through all she can before then. America will be forced to lead the march in the circus parade that global warming has become because it fits their agenda, and they can’t let it go. If they loose the argument for climate change prior to societal changes that suit their world view, they may never get their wishes. I think we should prepare for more things being pushed through prior to the next administration. I hope and pray that we can counteract these things, and that our fate won’t be sealed if and when Obama leaves office.

    I have no problem with working to reduce smog and other “real” pollutants in the air, but when they classify Carbon Dioxide as a pollutant, they are just plain insane… we breath it out, as do animals, plants and tree’s need it and in return give us oxygen…. its part of the natural order… so fine, reduce REAL pollution, but enough with the global warming crap, it hasn’t gotten warmer in 15 years overall globally, there are increases in ice caps and Antarctica’s ice sheet is growing so rapidly, Texas sized chunks are breaking off, ice melt models are all wrong, there is less melt then their pin-point perfect calculations thought…. its a natural phenomena and its going to occur if we drive SUV’s and have Coal Power plants or not… how did temps in 800-1200BC rise higher then today?!?!? Where were the coal fire plants and SUV’s back then?!?!?
