U.S. Marines Posed With Flag Resembling Nazi SS Symbol in AfghanistanSAN DIEGO (The Blaze/AP) — The Marine Corps confirmed Thursday that one of its scout sniper teams in Afghanistan posed for a photograph in front of a flag with a logo resembling that of the notorious Nazi SS.

Use of the SS symbol is not acceptable, and the Marine Corps has addressed the issue, Lt. Col. Stewart Upton said in a statement. However, he did not specify what action was taken.

Upton said the Marines in the photograph on an Internet blog are no longer with the unit they were assigned to at the time. The picture was taken in September 2010 in Sangin province, Afghanistan.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation in Washington said it was outraged by the photograph and wants a full investigation.

A description under the picture, which was originally published on the Knight’s Armament Blog back in May 2011, reads, in part:

Group picture is of the 1st Recon BN Charlie Co. in Sangin, Afghanistan in support of 3rd BN 5th Marines in September of 2010.  The “SS” flag has been adopted and used by the Marines in referrence to “Scout Sniper.”

Mikey Weinstein of the foundation said he has been flooded with calls from former Marines offended by the photo and from one member of his organization who is an Auschwitz survivor.

“Heads need to roll and this needs to be fully investigated. This is a complete and total outrage,” he said.

Weinstein said his organization was sending a letter to the head of the Marine Corps and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

Master Gunnery Sgt. Mark Oliva, a spokesman at Camp Pendleton, Calif., said the photo was brought to the attention of the 1 Marine Expeditionary Force inspector general in November, and he found there was no intent on the part of the Marines to identify themselves with a racist organization.

The Anti-Defamation League describes the symbol as follows:

Nazi symbol signifying the Schutzstaffel (SS), Heinrich Himmler’s police forces, whose members ranged from agents of the Gestapo to soldiers of the Waffen SS to the guards at concentration and death camps. [...]

The symbol is frequently seen in neo-Nazi tattoos and graffiti and characterizes the beliefs of neo-Nazis and racist skinheads – violence, anti-Semitism, white supremacy and fascism.

Oliva said the investigation found that the SS symbol was meant to identify the Marines as scout snipers, not Nazis, but was nonetheless not acceptable.

This is the second time this year the Marine Corps has had to do damage control for actions of its troops.

The Marine Corps is currently investigating a group of Marines recorded on video urinating on the dead bodies of Taliban fighters. Those Marines were based at Camp Lejune, N.C.

      That may be the case, but the symbol now evokes one of the greatest horrors of our time.

      Likewise, wearing a hounds tooth scarf will always be associated with Arab Islamic terrorism now, even though the British, and early Zionists pioneered it. The fact is, to carry a flag that looks similar to the Afrikorps flag in the Mid-East is a huge error. There were Nazi troops stationed all around the mid-East, ready for the next stage of world takeover, and they were aligned with Arab Muslims.

      I served with 1-12 Inf. Combined Arms Battalion. The Unit crest has a Castle under a dragon with a Tee-pee in front that has 2 Swastikas on either side of the door. I seriously doubt the Native Americans in the tee-pee where Nazi’s. The Swastika has long been a symbol of many different cultures. This is PC police run a muck. We must stand up to this crap.

      the swastika symbol was chosen by hitler because many of the great cathedrals of europe has them carved as a desiegn in the cielings. Roses, pinecones, stars and med-evil crosses.       The Nazis did steal the ”S” symbol because it is infact an ancient German Rune symbol that dates back to the 2nd Century AD that had its foundations in the Nordic origins of Nordic cultures that include Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. This is not the only rune adapted by the Nazis. They used most of the symbols of this ancient German language for military division designations as well as adaptation of these symbols into ceremonies of everyday life.

      It appears that many in the US and Russia today are waking up to the mistakes of their ancestors. The fact is that during the 20s you had a Germany run by non Germans and from 1917-1953 a Russia run by non Russians and in America from 1932- (for the most part) an America run by non Americans. Today Russia is ruled by Russians and once again Germany is controlled for the most part by non Germans and of course America is still an occupied land.

      Red stars are used as symbols on many things that do not have anything to do with communism. The two letters SS are also used to signify a great many things like steam ship on the SS Minnow or scout sniper.       As a service member who spent 8 years in the Marines, specifically, 2nd Bn 5th Marines, I can tell you that this isnt being done by just this solitary unit. Its Marine Corps wide. Its not meant as a reference to Nazi’s or Nazi ideology but toward “Scout Sniper.” Some even have tatoos on their body and decals on their vehicles. These people who claim “outrage” need to get their panties out of a wad.

      The s’s they are referring to are like the ones Kiss used. My son’s platoon was Bad Company. They all got matching tattoos with that on it. It is common in the military to pick a musical group to name their platoon.

      I like how stories come out about the military being worried about gang infiltration, they show us a “hero”, who admits that he may have killed “of age” children when a muslim politician told him that “everybody in the city is bad”, and now a CLEARLY stupid SS reference, but we’re all supposed to say NOTHING.

      I’m going to pose a couple of questions for those who fully, one hundred percent, will never condemn soldiers: Do you trust these youths in the same way you trust the young teachers with your children? Ever feel like there is a gulf between the morality of others, and yourself?

      Here we go again. As a SS back in the day (was with 2/1, 1st MarDiv and worked with the guys in 1st Force RECON as well) we did all kinds of similar things. Was on the 29 “Stumps” Shooting Team for two years as well. We had photos taken from time-to-time. So what! Deal with it. We were not, and are not, communists or Nazis. We were/are U.S. Marines doing a job most of you couldn’t do if you tried. So buck up little campers and deal with it.

      Quit complaining about the fact that you can sleep at night because the SS and a bunch of other patriotic Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Coast Gurdsmen and Airmen are on watch ensuring that your “six” is covered. Give me a freaking break!

      We are tired of hearing about how we treat the enemy and how our own citizens think we suck. Most of you people complain because your freaking coffee is too cold or you broke a nail today.

      How about you all go get some SEAL training, Marine RECON or Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training, SS training, Army Special Forces or Ranger training. Most of you jackwagons wouldn’t last ten minutes. Shut the hell up! Crap, most of you couldn’t even earn the title of Marine to begin with so shut the hell up!

    You must remember that half these soldiers probably did not even know the story behind the symbols. Just like today’s youth have no clue about Che. This was poor judgement used by these soldiers and any flag or any adoption of symbols should go through an approval process by commanding officers. Some people are getting their knickers in a wad for a misunderstanding and poor choice.

    I would just give them a verbal reprimand.

      This whole story is an example how America is choking on over sensitivity. The S symbols in the Marines SS flag are significantly geometrically different from the Nazi SS symbol. Even the background colors are different. I really think none of the individuals associated with the marines SS flag even related how using the letters S – S could be related to the Nazi SS symbol. It was an accident.

      Yes we should be sensitive to those effected by the holocaust and denounce hatred towards others. These symbols are so geometrically different that it is highly unlikely they were being used with any hateful intent.

      Even if the Marines have a rule against using the SS symbol, how many of these Fighting American Heroes were educated on the use the letters S – S together as a symbol. I doubt if it was strongly stressed in training. Before long our troops are going to be so downtrodden by the people offend back home that they are going to loose faith in their mission.

      COFEMALE, Agreed. I am so angry at our commander and cheif over this. Had he ever walked in their shoes he might understand. That would never happen because he does not love his country enough to make the sacrifice. I pray that our soldiers will remember the oath that they took when signed in and understand that “We the People” support them and will do our best in 2012 to put someone in office that appreciates the service they willing give to their country. For anyone to judge these young men without ever experiencing the hell of war is absurd. Where is the outrage of the treatment of our soldiers who are captured or whose bodies lie on the foreign grounds? I am disgusted with this decision and hope that enough people speak out in their defense. I do not care what any Mid -eastern Muslim thinks about this. This is war and war is hell. I never heard any sympathy from them after the 9/11 attacks. They call for the killings of Jews and Americans every day, they torture and kill their own people . I find it hard to swallow that our soldiers have to be punished for this act. Does it show disrespect for the bodies of their enemy? Yes, but it is very difficult to respect anyone that has been trying to kill you and has killed your fellow soldiers. They did not hang or drag these bodies . They did not be-head them. They urinated on them, big deal. To say that we are better than that is easy if you have never faced what these young men have. A verbal repremand is sufficient.

    First thing I said when I saw the flag was “I think that means Scout Snipers” before reading the article. Maybe i have the benefit of having 2 family members being Marines. Although probably not the best choice for a symbol since it resembles the Nazi era, these are Marines, trained to be hardened men, not PC police.

      The deductive reasoning I learned in the 3rd grade tells me that you have never bothered to take the time to serve the country nor ever met anyone who has!

      I consider myself to be extremely bright in some areas, with an inquisitive mind. I have huge interests in history, ranging from ancient history up to the World War 2 and Vietnam eras, and areas of science and physics, and geo-political topics.

      I also consider myself to be somewhat cultured, having spent many years enjoying numerous cultures around the world, from Europe to many parts of Asia.

      Just because I spent 20 years wearing a military uniform doesn’t make me an intellectual idiot, nor does it make me uncultured. It does, however, give me the pleasure to say, “You’re welcome!” and the backbone to say that you are entitled to think whatever you like about those of us that have served – that’s your freedom. But I‘m also going to exercise my freedom to say that you’re an uninformed idiot.

Not a racist bone in my body, but white males with the last two letters of a band in their logo (which also happens to be the acronym for their highly regarded community) will always draw fire. Oh, and if you think military members aren‘t ’bright‘ or ’cultured’ you are obviously as biased as is humanly possible. I am, and know dozens of, military members who have more brilliance and courage in one hair on their nether-regions than you do in your entire body.       BALLZONYA & SOUTHSIDELIB, I’m sure that neither of you had the ballz to even attempt to take the ASVAB. Furthermore, the military is made up of a cross section of the entire nation. That brings in different cultures as well a variety when it also comes to a sense of humor. So wow, these guys being shot at, some horribly maimed and wounded and seeing what is happening to their buddies, fellow Marines, and Soldiers on the ground really effects people differently. Of course, you two will never understand that since you haven’t the spines to put your life on the line. Some of these things are silly to even plane stupid, but sierra hotel india tango happens in war. You are such low lifes that you would rather slap yourselves on the back and complain pics with SS runes and even unrinating on dead terrorists rather than point out the beheadings and torture by the terrorists on their captives as well as their own people for so much as having any dealings with the Coalition troops. Talk about sick! One of the guys had it right above, neither of you are worthy of kissing the boots of any or our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines.

They have to be to pass the course.       While it may have been insensitive, or slightly obtuse, these boys wanted to celebrate the fact that they are Scout Snipers. Which is a very difficult job, and requires a lot of training. And they are likely to be more familiar with the logo for the band “KISS” than the Nazi “SS”. The KISS logo features S’s with a similar style.

      Also, you must never have seen the Hanes commercials featuring Micheal Jordan. He currently sports the “Hitler” mustache.

      Im tired of hearing how these soldiers have allowed me to be free…I call BS. No one has fought for my freedom in over 70 years. Every war we have fought since WWII has been to either prop up dictators, or dispose of dictators we have previously supported. Not one war since WWII has been moral or justified. None of these soldiers have fought so I can “spew garbage” as so many people here think. They are hired mercenaries, paid by corporate interests…..nothing more.

      PUK – You grow up man. We shouldn’t even be there, should never have been there. We are reaping what we have sown in that region for decades. We claim to be for freedom, but only when that suits our interests. Ill repeat what I said, not one of these soldiers today have fought and died for my freedom, in any conceivable way. Get them the hell out of the areas of this world where we dont belong and for once work on the homeland…..explore our own energy reserves and leave that hellhole to the people that live there. They dont hate us for our freedom, thats total *********….they hate us becasue we occupy their lands and support dictators that have killed and oppressed them for decades.

    He will FAIL against Obama when he needs to win.

    We could elect a Hot Dog vendor for president against Obama — but some people are just unelectable. Mitt Romney is one of them.

    It has not yet been reported that he took shady money from a bunch of places – and the Dem’s know it. They are holding off until we pick him to be our candidate. Once that happens the flood gates will open and you will not believe the damage that Mitt has already done to his credibility.
