NORTHFIELD, Vt. (The Blaze/AP) — At the beginning of the school year, gay pride events at a military academy with titles like “condom Olympics” and “queer prom” would have been unthinkable. This week, they’re a reality.
Cadets in uniform at Norwich University, the nation’s oldest private military academy, participated Monday in sessions about handling bullying and harassment as part of the school’s first gay pride week. The events are believed to be the first of their kind on a military campus.
These developments follow the official end last year of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule that prohibited gays and lesbians from serving openly in the armed forces. Less than a year later, it’s a different — and less secretive — world.

In this March 21, 2012 photo, Norwich University cadet Joshua Fontanez stands on the parade ground in Northfield, Vt. Fontanez, president of the Norwich University Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Question, and Allies Club, says the club will be hosting its first ever Pride Week at Norwich University. Until last year, only a select few at Norwich knew of the sexual orientation of Joshua Fontanez, 22, of Browns Mills, N.J., a past president of the student government who quietly laid the groundwork for the school’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Allies Club, which held its first meeting the day the law ended.
He had always wanted to be a soldier but figured he’d have to keep his sexuality a secret.
“The aspects of my sexual orientation, how that played in the military, that was something I was willing to sacrifice, being open versus serving my nation,” Fontanez said. “It’s something I feel I was truly called toward and truly loved, so it‘s great that I don’t have necessarily to make that sacrifice.”

In December, a group of students at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., formed a group called Spectrum, which has many of the same goals as the Norwich club. A similar organization with the same name is being formed in New York at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
For many of the newly open student leaders, the changes brought by the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell” haven’t overwhelmed, despite the years-long political wrangling that culminated in the policy change.
“It was definitely a big change, but it happened over such a long period of time for me that it didn’t seem like that big of a deal,” said Coast Guard Academy Senior Chip Hall, 21, of Monterrey, Calif.
The West Point Spectrum, modeled after the Coast Guard organization, is being formed with little fanfare.

“Everyone has been very professional here at the academy,” said West Point Cadet Andrew Fitzsimmons, 19, a sophomore from Algonac, Mich. “It’s been a very positive environment.”
A group of alumni called Knights Out will hold a campus dinner this weekend and is expecting at least a dozen cadets to attend, said the group’s director, Sue Fulton, a 1980 West Point graduate who was among the first women admitted to the academy.
“The official status has changed dramatically, in that public events that would have been prohibited are happening; but in terms of attitudes, I think cadets and midshipmen have long been supportive of their gay and lesbian classmates,” Fulton said.
Norwich, established in 1819, has about 1,300 cadets and 1,100 civilian students. About 115 of the 200 graduating cadets plan to be commissioned in the armed forces through ROTC.
The gay student club is believed to be the first of its kind in the country on a military campus, Norwich officials said. Thirty to 35 people attend meetings.

Norwich University's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Allies Club treasurer Hailey Libbey, 19, a freshman majoring in nursing from Newport, Vt., right, gets help setting up from volunteer Fernando Rincon, 22, a senior majoring in geopolitical science from Lancaster, Calif., before hosting a Bias/Harassment and bullying seminar at the Norwich University library in Northfield, Vt. on Monday, March 26, 2012. The events this week — held at a different time of year from many other gay pride events, which usually are observed in June or October — include discussions of HIV testing; the “condom Olympics,” in which prophylactics are given as prizes; and a dance at which same-sex partners are welcome.
As an institution, Norwich never banned open homosexuality in the corps of cadets, but because many of its students were destined for the military, which prior to the end of “don‘t ask don’t tell” the law served to keep people quiet, said Norwich spokeswoman Daphne Larkin.
Some members of Norwich’s Christian Fellowship have been uncomfortable with gay student club, but the two organizations have worked together, with members of each attending some of the other’s meetings, said biology emeritus professor Carlos Pinkham, the Christian group’s faculty adviser.
“We make it clear to them that we use the bible as our guide and that as a result we can’t condone the stuff they do,” Pinkham said. “But the Bible is also equally clear, in fact, even more clear. … Being judgmental about the sin without extending love to the sinner is another form of sin.”
The groups are a consequence of changing times, said Norwich Vice President Michael Kelley, a 1974 graduate who spent 27 years in the military before returning to academia. He noted the school was among the first to allow female cadets.
“It’s saying that we as a military community are looking to more to the future, that we’re not quibbling about the past, what was or what wasn’t,” he said, “that we can take a leadership role to help move our students to a more enlightened future.”

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 8:45amI would like to point out that this is NOT the military nor any military academy. It’s not west point! This is a miltary styled college. The “cadets” are not guaranteed nor required to serve in the military once done with school. DADT had and has nothing to do with these places and they could have been doing this all along. Now if it were West Point or Annapolis this might be a story, however, this kind of crap won’t be tolerated at those institutions regardless of allowing gays to serve openly. There is still military decourum and discipline to be observed. With that said I think all the comments about how our military is degraded because of this are very much misplaced. THAT said, I can’t wait until we get a real conservative congress and white house and can put this crap back the way it should be. As a veteran I would not serve with openly gay men. I would refuse and consequences be damned. If they are going to allow this then they should also fully integrate women and men in same barracks, showers, etc. because it’s no different than having gays in the shower with you just because you have the same plumbing. Just my opinion. If you don‘t like it I don’t give a damn.

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 10:18amSeriously? Condom Olympics? Yeah, nothing says professionalism like having condoms as prizes for college campus events. Hey, remember when all the heterosexual organizations had their Condom Olympics and openly advertized their “straightness” on Norwich University’s campus?! Wasn’t that a BLAST? Oh…wait…that’s right, I forgot…they NEVER DID THAT. That would have been condemned as grossly unprofessional! But its okay, homosexuals don’t have to be expected to have the same levels of professionalism because heck, that might stifle their ability to broadcast their sexual orientation to a world who could not possibly care LESS that they are homosexual……….wow

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 10:34amThe biggest opposition homosexuals get from mainstream America is their activism and in-your-face attempt to B.S. everybody into believing their perversion is not a sickness, but the way they were born, and they literally DEMAND acceptance.
They don’t stop to realize that by maintaining that their perversions are the way they were born, they‘re very clearly telling the entire world they’re a bunch of freaks.
Actually, 99% of them can be cured but refused to because….like alcoholics and addicts…..they refuse to undergo the necessary psychotherapy.
Most people preferr to allow them to go their own way, live and let live, but they don’t want their perversions forced on them. It’s perfectly natural for all species in the animal kingdom to reject all kinds of behavior that is direct opposition to natural inclination that is deeply imbedded to perpetuate the species. Calling such rejection as hate is only a feeble attempt to gain acceptance.
Personally, I don’t care what they do, so long as the keep to themselves. As is ingrained in all of us, I think they’re disgusting.

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 11:21amRobert, you are correct in your assessment. These people crave affirmation and even more, they accept nothing less than over-the-top celebration of their “lifestyle”. And that stems from a combination of their profound narcissism, and their deep-seated personal recognition that their behavior is disordered. To overcome the latter, they must be constantly told they are “special, and doggone it, people like them.” It is a choice they make to live that way and please stop giving me that crap about being born that way. They are searching the human genome high and low to find the “gay gene”. They haven‘t found it because it doesn’t exist!
God help us all. This is not good for our military and if it stands, I predict historians will point to this one decision (allowing and celebrating homosexuality in the military) to be a major cause of the fall of America. We‘ll all be dead by then but let’s agree to meet in the hereafter to see if I’m right.

I remember what it was like in 1969, but think I’d be as leery of people in my own squad today as I would any perceived enemy, real or imagined. The nuts are swallowing the world up whole. The path of least resistance is to isolate and that is what has enabled the loons to get the footholds in our culture that they have today. Report Post »My interest to writing in this forum stems from your comment about Norwich not being a military college or making a mockery of what it is. I want to tell you of a student who has been in the top 5% of her class since her freshman year, who has only had one goal in life, to attend West Point-she’s got a GPA of 3.9 and she is an AP scholar. She’s the battalion executive officer for JROTC, drill team commander and all around productive citizen. She had received nominations to WP from both of our state senators and representatives-every single one! A month ago, she received word that she was on WP’s national wait list, 2 weeks ago she was told she was NOT going to get acceptance-she‘s met all criteria across the board but still didn’t get accepted. She is now waiting to find out if she’s received an ROTC scholarship to attend Norwich. Her goal is to become an outstanding Army officer and she is going to achieve it in spite of the roadblocks. What she and other soldiers do NOT need, is someone saying that if she attends X school she’s not worthy of serving. This young lady has worked her tail off-and she is NOT gay and she does not support the repeal of DADT. She wants to attend an academy because she wants structure-not the “partying” college thing. She cannot be faulted for that. So please, do some research on Senior Military Colleges like Norwich, and be thankful that there are people like MY DAUGHTER who will attend, adapt, overcome and SERVE.

Homosexuals deserve an extra measure of respect in our society because they have suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous idiocy their entire lives. That is real adversity. That is how one truly learns about human agency, learns to tune out the meekest intellects among us and live independently. You would all do well to take a lesson from the homosexuals that you despise and fear, because very soon the progress of civilized society will catch up with your third world, animalistic tribalism. If it’s as small as I think it is, how can a ‘movement’ such as this gain traction without outside support, financing and encouragement? Is the movement a foreign-financed, subversive movement, designed to tear down ALL our institutions, heritage and history–all argued ad-infinitum, established by a brave people crossing the ocean in tiny ‘ships’ and fought-for and paid-with-the-blood of our forefathers, which evolved into the most advanced society on Earth, now being torn and shredded from without AND within? The attention given this ‘movement’ is disproportionate to its size! I don’t care if you are gay–I do care if you’re in my face with in, in my family with it, affecting my future with it! Why do we ‘celebrate’ the segment of our society that cannot or will not reproduce? Isn’t that a fatal-embrace? It sucks all the vitality out of our existence! How has it ‘risen’ to such prominence? Why is it even an ‘issure’ at all? Something is VERY WRONG here! (And, it’s not so much the gay thing as it is the prominence of the gay thing! Disproportionate reality!)

We really should not be surprised by this. This is Obama’s way of pandering to the h-o-m-o-s without actually coming out and fully support gay marriage.
And to expect anything different from the h-o-m-o-s is kind of useless. Have they not shown everybody by now what and who they are.
The way they behave in their parades, the way they dress in their parades looks to me like what Sodom and Gomorrah looked like.
Except we are worse of now then they were then. For the very first time in history gay marriage has the official approval of government. It cannot get any worse can it?
Since most gays are also atheists and many are also involved in bestiality they most likely will diminish in their human form and evolve back to monkeys.
I am sorry in sounding so mean. But I just about had enough of all of this crap.
The atheists, the gays, the evolutionists, the pornography, the pedophiles, the global warming fanatics, the communists, the socialists, the islamists, the abortions there does not seem to be an end to this perversion. I am sure I missed a few.

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 10:37amI know! Puke! Yes, definitely! But why ‘the condom’ and not ‘the dental dam’! Hey, and without any ‘gender’ bias–if you know what I mean! Hey, be ‘green’–you can flip it inside out and get a second use out of them! Why waste the packaging?

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 7:27amSo our boys are dying in Wars to support this crap? BS. I will preach to anyone who will listen to me to NOT join the military and defend a country that supports this DECADENT Pagan Country and Lifestyle. This is disgraceful.

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 7:25amTheir very first ‘coming out’ celebration consists of — ‘Condom Olympics’ and ‘Queer Prom’?
Aye Carumba.
It’s going to take awhile for the dust to settle. But when it does, and I do sincerely wish the military men and women that do decide to come out an abundance of peace and happiness in their military careers, I pray to God that our military hasn‘t become dysfunctional and unable to do its job because it just can’t cope.

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 7:22amFine. Homosexuals can now serve openly in the military but what is the point of such things as the condom olympics and queer prom?
Report Post »Do they just want to serve their country or are they just promoting their lifestyle?

Condom Olympics?
Why are condoms more important to LGBTQ than to the average person?
