U.S. Naval Commander: Iran Has ‘Suicide’ Boats Outfitted With ‘Large’ Warheads

U.S. Vice Adm. Mark I. Fox, commander, Naval Forces Central Command, commander, U.S. 5th fleet, speaks during press briefing at the U.S. Navy base in Manama, Bahrain, Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012. (AP)
Iran is preparing boats for use in possible future suicide attacks, according to the commander of U.S. naval forces in the Persian Gulf. Reuters reports:
“They have increased the number of submarines … they increased the number of fast attack craft,” Vice Admiral Mark Fox told reporters. “Some of the small boats have been outfitted with a large warhead that could be used as a suicide explosive device. The Iranians have a large mine inventory.”
“We have watched with interest their development of long range rockets and short, medium and long range ballistic missiles and of course … the development of their nuclear programme,” Fox, who heads the U.S. Fifth Fleet, said at a briefing on the fleet’s base in the Gulf state of Bahrain.
Iran now has 10 small submarines, he said.
Military experts say the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet patrolling the Gulf – which always has at least one giant supercarrier accompanied by scores of jets and a fleet of frigates and destroyers – is overwhelmingly more powerful than Iran’s navy.
At the same time, after the experience of al-Qaeda’s 2000 suicide bombing of the USS Cole in a Yemen port using a small bomb-laden boat, the military needs to be on guard. Seventeen American sailors were killed in that attack. The admiral was asked if the Navy was prepared for an Iranian attack in the Persian Gulf:
“We are very vigilant, we have built a wide range of options to give the president and we are ready… What if it happened tonight? We are ready today.”
Answering Iranian threats to block the Strait of Hormuz through which almost all Middle East oil passes, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey told CBS last month that he believes Iran has the capability, “for a period of time,” to block the Strait of Hormuz, “but we would take action and reopen the Straits.”
When asked if he took Iran’s threats seriously, Vice Adm. Fox said, “Could they make like [life] extremely difficult for us? Yes they could. If we did nothing and they were able to operate without being inhibited, yeah they could close it, but I can’t see that we would ever be in that position.”
Last month, The Blaze reported on a threat from a senior Iranian military commander who said Iran’s submarines could ambush and hit enemy vessels – according to the Fars news agency – “specially US Aircraft carriers from the seabed throughout the Persian Gulf.”

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 1:17pmWho cares if Iran has speed boats packed with explosives or rocket propelled torpedoes. We have rocket propelled torpedoes as well as missile defense systems that can shoot thousands of rounds a second at approaching aircraft or ships and hit them with accuracy out to several thousand meters. We have helicopters that can drag sonar buoys along the ocean surface to detect their subs before they even have a chance to get in range of our ships. We have missiles that use radar based altimeters to fly just feet off the ocean’s surface at speeds greater than the speed of sound with over the horizon ranges to destroy foreign fleets before we can ever see them.
Why does every get so scared every time another nation makes a single step towards a modern army or navy? Because the US is full of neocons and welfare recipients. That is why.

After the fire of their surface to surface Chinese silkworm missiles (1 ton warheads) & play with their Swedish built speedboats, both side tally up the losses. Posted on February 13, 2012 at 4:35pmThe US needs to be careful in the Persian Gulf and they know it. In 2002, the US conducted one of the most elaborate war games ever, pitting US forces against an unnamed middle eastern foe with weapons like those described here. In a suprise attack on US forces, using fast boats, small aircraft and a huge number of cruise missiles fired without warning, the entire US fleet was sunk. With this kind of “asymetrical warfare” the winner isn’t necessarily the guy with the biggest ships.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 7:04pm@ JZS, when this study was conducted, was the entire us naval fleet in the middle east? Because reality dictates that only a portion is ever there at one time. Also, was the navy fielding their metalstorm cannons with automatic radar identification, tracking, and targeting of threats?
Speedboats packed full of explosives would never reach a ship after the Cole bombing. And their silkworm missiles would get within 1000 meters and dive or explode from the impact of several hundred rounds fired almost simultaneously from a metalstorm cannon. Of course, that`s assuming we aren`t already fielding laser based technology. You do know that we have lasers that can fit in an airplane and shoot targets past 25 miles with radar and laser tracking right.

The Navy has 2 small boat units. One base off each coast. They rotate to Bahrain. There purpose is to go head to head with the Iranian speed boats. that is what they did during the Tanker war & won. I is possible to sink a carrier & escorts going thru the straights. But if there is a carrier one or 2 other carrier groups in the Indian ocean there will be retribution.
If 5,000 people are killed on a carrier & no one does anything. Well then anything goes.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 11:09pmHey guys, I’m not slamming the US Navy. I just read and linked to a war game from 2002. Even the crazy religious people – I hope – would never be so crazy as to take on the US.
But in my opinion, our military leaders are smarter than to think we can position ourselves anywhere and assume we simply crush any opposition. That didn’t happen in Vietnam despite our technological advantage. And 5000 plus US soldiers were killed in Iraq, most of those after we conquered the country.
To think we can simply bat away Iranian forces like flies is false. The military knows that, even if you don’t. I only object to the idea that some have that the US can simply occupy the Persian Gulf, prevent the laying of land mines, and swat down thousands of cruise missiles without loss of ships or lives. I know we could kick their b-, but I’m not quite so sure about how many Americans would die in the process.

In 2010, we had a hand full of fear mongers as you say, trying to warn our Government of terrorist planning to hi jacking our planes – the Geniuses you describe in our military and FBI, replied let them, we will capture them when they land.
The problem here, is that you and most of the leaders in our Military Intelligence don’t have a clue as to what motivates the Muslim terrorist to do what they do. I do, but If I told you – you probably would pee your pants. I can assure these extremest spend every waking moment of everyday trying to achieve their goal.
To catch a crook – you have to think like a crook. The Hijackers were the only one on earth that knew they were not going to land those planes. It’s sad to say but, 9/11 did not teach America anything about our enemy.
You see we are big bad America trying to prove to the World that we are smarter and more powerful than anyone else – we call our bomber the Enola Gay – they call theirs delivery bomber, heroes, vest, row boats, UPS, Fed Ex, submarines, the next door neighbors car, a donkey or any other transportation devise that our Military Intelligence is not looking for.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 11:38amAbu Musa Island in the Persian Gulf could become important. For many years, it was governed by Great Britain, then by Sharjah, one of the seven United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has the closest mainland. It was also claimed by Iran, which governs most of the other islands in the vicinity, albeit closer to its mainland on the north side of the Gulf. Despite an agreement to recognize UAE sovereignty, after the revolution, Iran took over control of Abu Musa in the early 1980′s. The island has an airstrip and is garrisoned. In the event of a suicide boat attack, it would be conceivable for U.S. forces to take over Abu Musa on behalf of the UAE, and gain a base of operations right next to the vital Persian Gulf shipping lanes. Of course, that would require that president Omeba grow a backbone, so don’t hold your breath.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 12:16pmSTEELHEAD, with that last statement you must have suffered some real conniption fits during the Bush administration….NOT! Sounds more you had orgasms with all of the media pounding of Bush. Bet you and Dan Rather got together and rubbed one out with those BS letters about Bush in the Air National Guard. No, I am anything but PC.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 11:31amyes but our base in behrain is a giant target. this is what happens when we ignore iran for so many years. My prayers are with our service men in the navy right now. I am sick that these guys and gals have to go clean up a mess politicians have ignored for years which has created an even larger threat. It’s news like this that terrifies me even more that obama is our commander and chief. Especially during election season this will be fought with a political agenda instead of the right way.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 10:59amAnd by the day Obama wants to make sure the military is broken; a world war is about to break loose and our autocrat to be in the White House waits for Iran to strike abroad and at home. I can see him issure ordes for our forces not to defend themselves while declaring martial law at home and then taking power completely – civil war would result.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 11:00amIt would, and Obama then would order the person doing so court-marshalled for daring to do so; I cna see Obama telling the navy to not defend themselves and someone does, then all hell will break loose here at home from him.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 11:18amSNOWLEOPARD {GALLERY OF CAT FOLKS}, While I see your concern with the lack of reason for the military by 0bama, he is not allowed by law to interfere with the investigation of somebody trying to protect a ship. For that matter I can‘t see a ship’s CPT to follow such an order to hazard his ship. The administration and media may make much of it, but such orders would really allow today‘s service members to understand the administration’s disdain for the military. So, I can only say that I ‘hope’ you are wrong with your statement, but I fear you are correct with your assessment of the Boob in Chief sitting on the throne at the Resolute Desk.
