U.S. Recession Wipes Entire Nevada Town Off the Map

U.S. Recession Wipes Entire Nevada Town Off the Map

The recession has created hardships for individuals and families across America. Businesses have shuttered, homeowners have faced foreclosures and unemployment has marred recovery efforts. Now, in what may be a first, the nation’s economic woes have led to the closure of an entire Nevada town.

As of June 20, Empire, a small mining town of about 300 people and situated about 100 miles to the northeast of Reno, will become a desolate ghost town. In fact, the community is even losing its postal code. Mail Online has more:

the only thing remaining of the town, which was once home to the United States Gypsum Corporation, will be an eight-foot chain-link fence crowned with barbed wire sealing off the 136-acre plot and a sign saying Welcome to Nowhere - which has never proven so true.

Empire was a company town, completely built around the USG, which is the nation’s largest drywall manufacturer.

The Christian Science Monitor explains that, since 1948, USG has been America’s largest drywall producer. But, as the economy has sunk, so has the nation’s need for building supplies. The company holds the title to the entire town of Empire, which includes only four streets:

The end of Empire began just before Christmas, when dozens of workers in steel-toed shoes and hard hats filed into the community hall for a mandatory 7:30 a.m. meeting. Mike Spihlman, the gypsum plant’s soft-spoken manager, delivered the news to a room of stunned faces: Empire was shutting down. “I had to stand in front of 92 people and say ‘Not only do you not have a job anymore, you don’t have a house anymore,’ ” Mr. Spihlman recalled.

Until January, the town was as bustling as a four-street town can be. Now, it has gone virtually silent, as the majority of workers and their families left by the end of last month. Fortunately, many of these workers have been able to find work in surrounding areas, as the state’s gold industry is healthy. Still, the quaint family unit that once existed in the town has forever been dispersed. The Christian Science Monitor’s following description provides a lens into what life in Empire once was like:

For decades, Empire was largely insulated from the troubles of the outside world. Here, you could rent a company-owned home for $250 a month, or an apartment for as little as $110. Water, cable TV, sewer, trash, and Internet service were all provided on the company dime. Workers were awarded gold-colored construction helmets when they reached 25 years of service and wore them with pride. No one bothered to lock cars or homes. Kids had the run of the neighborhood, but were still in hollering distance come dinnertime.

This newfound ghost town, which famously boasts a prophetic “welcome to nowhere” sign, is just a piece of the recession’s immensely large and complex fallout. Now it’s just in pieces.

In Northern Nevada, many of us KNOW Reid and the union boss Trumpka planned a coup and succeeded to get Reid elected, but it wasn’t legal; add La Raza to the mix and you got a Reid win…..If he had cleared in the southern part of the state we would have accepted it but in the northern part there were too many anti-Reiders. North of Reno there were over 100 people calling the Republican party complaining of machines not working, non-speaking English people allowed to vote without any ID, we filmed them in the parking lot with their cell phones and when they saw us they ran. When several people reviewed their vote on the machines, it showed they voted for Reid when they hadn’t….they asked for a redo, but once they did the machine malfunctioned and they couldn’t review their vote the second time. The monitors assured each voter that their ‘re-do’ would be right, but none had any way of knowing. The elitist Repubs in Las Vegas sold the whole state out. They wanted their candidate, not Angle, so they set out to make sure Reid won. Then there were the Union workers who moved to the state, or said they did, and their vote was counted. It was a sham, we have reported it, written letters, and get no help. Every state should have a group to make sure their votes are counted properly…..or Obama will get back in in 2012…….A group has to start NOW in every state to make sure their state’s presidential votes are actual citizens and everyone shows ID!

This was a conservative state when I moved here in the 80s. Too many Californicators here now. Half the businesses in this town of Dayton (20 miles east of the state capitol) have gone belly-up. When they widened the hiway 6 years ago, Hairy Reed brought up his pals from Lost Wages instead of hiring locals. I sure didn’t vote for that Jackass!

Lack of appropriate government regulation – in relation to Banks, specifically – leads to unbridled pursuit of profit, and toxic mortgage products sold to anyone with a pulse. This, in turn, creates a housing bubble that when it burst created a global recession – the aftermath of which is primarily responsible for the current US economic problem.

But if that’s too difficult for you to grasp, just blame the black man.

With prices sky-rocketing mining companies in the Nevada mountains are mining for more “Precious Metals” since China is buying up world supplies it is driving up the price since they will control who gets those resources.

China needs them for the growing factories where they make the worlds high tech devices at the expense of their population. China’s factories have some of the higher suicide rates of any “Developed” Industrial country, why, because they are forced to work, live and eat within the same factroy that makes your Apple devices, cell phones and Personal Computers from nearly all American Corporations. Ever since IBM sold the Communist Chinese gov’t their “ThinkPad” line of retail computers China has become more aggressive in keeping a lead in that industry.

If it does get better it wasn’t through their policies or lack of job growing policies. It is because of people like Rush Limbaugh, entrepreneurs that have an idea.

There is no room for independent thought, let alone independent business in this super-socialistic world as envisioned by the UN. I think it’s time to push them into the NY harbor, and tell them they have to find a new host nation. But, at as a consolation prize, they can take our current POTUS with them! He can be their “New World Order Leader” … and good luck finding the money to replace all that US funding you used to get!

Lets see here, millions of loosing jobs, millions loosing homes, millions loosing property across the country, millions on food stamps. Not one politician has lost a job or government worker, they haven’t lost value on their homes, sky rocketing profits on hedge funds, government giving billions of stimulus to foreign banks. Seems to me that our government is now a puppet government for the super rich who want to take our country away from us. Think about it. Land becomes cheap, people leave their homes and the banks own it. These people from around the world come in and purchase the land we inherited and just like that we are the serfs. It all makes sense. The only way to repay the governments debt is with our property. Why would they give up theirs? I have a funny feeling that we are going to wake up soon to an awful situation that will be uncontrollable.

Yea, because that‘s all that’s going on here. You either have a company that’s successful or a company that requires government intervention in order to linger on. Of course the very idea that excessive government intervention in the economy, and not competition from superior competitors, is totally absurd, right?

It’s cheaper to get the poisoned drywall from China than use pure, clean gypsum from Nevada, put into American made drywall. People have gotten sick from China drywall. yikes. folks, get with it and use American made, get rid of the Unions who stop competition and demand things that hurt competition, so……….just go to China and keep losing all our work because of Unions, and risk getting sick from more poisoned products sent to us via china. Is this what you want for your children?
p.s. Let Boeing work in South Carolina and let those people work instead of losing the whole enchilada because of Union demands, Time to get smart and stop cutting our own throats.

The list should look something like this..

      Power plants
name and place of plant total yearly power out put
      total loss of power production
(there are like five of these coal fire plants being shut down)

Then continue on manfactureing , and all other catagoriew…It would be intresting to see the total working assets being closed…

      @Exrepublisheep,

“Free market. They couldn’t compete, out they go. Would you prefer, govt. intervention?”

We don’t have a free market Capitalist economy, but a Corporatist, Marxist, regulated economy (central planning). The Founders never intended this. You can thank the Progressives who’ve always inteded to destroy the American economy, and us Capitalists who were asleep and allowed it to happen.

You‘re right that we shouldn’t ask for more government intervention. The government needs to get out of the way.

See this video for an explanation of the difference between Capitalism and Corporatism.

Free Market? Couldn’t Compete!!!!!!!!! You have no idea what you are talking about. I live in Nevada and most of you don’t know that we have resources beyond gaming (mining, storage, and yes livestock ((the real wild west)). Last year people started getting sick from the vapors being released from the drywall that came from China, bought because it was cheaper! Not cheaper from the free market but because China does not pay the taxes or import/export fees that our mining and other companies pay, period. Our companies suffer here or they relocate because we do not have fair trade with the world. These are AMERICANS that have lost their jobs, yours could be next!!!!!!

      @ EXREPUBLISHEEP

This is not the result of free market, and government intervention is certainly not the cure like you intimate. In fact, the problem IS government intervention. We have a free market system, then the government intervenes and tries to do things it’s own way, and then when it results in failure people like you blame the free market system. Are you following me? If we had limited government and fiscal responsibility you would not have seen this happen. You’re backward in your thinking.

I see more and more area supermarkets are selling 50 pound bags of rice, flour, oats and various beans. grains, etc. Stores that never even carried many of these items before now carry 50 pound bags of this stuff….surely the complexion of the buying public hasn’t changed to warrant these items. These stores are located in upper middle income areas of NJ. I think that the selling of these items is not only to compete with the Costco and big box stores but to get a hedge on the rush for these items when the bottom falls out of our economy.

Free market??? Yeah, they can’t compete against endless EPA regulations hindering them every step of the way. They can’t compete with high corporate taxes that chase business out of the country. They can’t compete with having a portion of their taxes going to stimulus money going to “deserving” unions. Looks like the government is already intervening way too much. I wish we did live in a Free Market society.
