U.S. Soldiers Love the Army‘s New ’Punisher’ Smart Weapon

The United States Army is celebrating its latest technological advancement on the battlefield — the new XM25 grenade launcher or, as many soldiers have affectionately nicknamed it, “The Punisher.”

U.S. Soldiers Love the Armys New Punisher Smart Weapon

"The Punisher"

The weapon was first used last December and has since seen action in at least nine engagements, disrupting two insurgent attacks on observation posts, taking out two PKM machine gun positions and destroying four ambush sites, the Army Times reports.

One such engagement left the enemy either “so badly wounded or so freaking scared” that he dropped his weapon and ran, Lt. Col. Christopher Lehner, Program Manager for Individuals Weapons said.

Best of all, there have been no reported casualties among ground units carrying the XM25 in any of those nine engagements.

“No longer can the enemy shoot at American forces, then hide behind something,” said Brig. Gen. Peter Fuller of Program Executive Office Soldier.  “We’re going to reach out and touch you.”

“This is a revolutionary weapon. This is a game-changer,” he added.

The XM25 has a target acquisition system that calculates range with the push of a button. The data is transferred to an electronic fuse, enabling the 25mm round to explode over the target and rain shell fragments on the enemy.

All five prototypes were sent to Afghanistan in November. Officials are putting the final touches on data and analysis, but said Col. Douglas Tamilio, project manager for soldier weapons, said the weapons “performed flawlessly” and no maintenance issues showed.

Soldiers have been so pleased with the XM25 that they are carrying it as a primary weapon, and not bothering to bring an M4 as a secondary weapon, said Maj. Christopher Conley, who monitored the employment of XM25 on behalf of PEO Soldier.

Lehner said the tests revealed only one problem: The units didn’t want to give the Punisher back.

Not only are U.S. soldiers reluctant to give the new weapon back, they’re clamoring for more.

According to CNet, the Army is shopping for 36 more XM25s, with the first batch being deployed within the next year.  Funding may prove to be a problem for the others, however, as each launcher costs $25,000 and each round $1,000 apiece, each made by hand.  Once the weapon can be mass produced, the Army may buy more than 12,500 additional weapons beginning in 2012.

Here’s a bit of the “The Punisher” in action:

Hell, is Man created in this case. ROE’s are the key to define offensive vs defensive war fighting. Defensive is applicable sort term short distance only. Attrition yard stick is the end result. Conventional warfare – grunts cannot hold nor extend geographic security/pacification of battlefields that have terrain ‘limiting obstacles’ like that of Northern-Eastern Afghanistan. Urban warfare has the same limiting obstacles. ROE‘s inside of urban battlefields measured via the political ’collateral’ damage is not offensive in raw form.

Let’s see…. even at the $25K price …. that would be 7 or 8 guns per hour that the traitor in chief is not allowed back into the air. Time for the child-commie-president to get grounded. America would be revitalized, because God has blessed us with the wonderful world of imagination and the desire to see what we imagine come to fruition. There’s been no other nation in history so blessed, and it was because of the Faith of our Founders, if we return to faith, these awesome feats will become commonplace once again.

They do. It’s called a TACTICAL NUKE! Note on the story…That magazine will only hold FIVE rounds since they’re firing a 20mm grenade there. A FIFTY FIVE round magazine would be impossible unless they modified it to be belt fed (next modification maybe?). The actual launcher has been around for years. It was originally part of a complete weapons system that was a 5.56mm carbine attached to the grenade launcher. The only problem was the batteries for the rangng and targeting system and the weight of the total package was way too heavy. Looks like they scrapped the carbine and went with just the grenade gun….somebody got smart for a change.

Realistically, do you believe that mountain range was clear of all people and animals? There’s no way they cleared that entire mountain range. Those Afghans roam around remote and random mountains all day long. Guaranteed at least a few innocent people died in a testing like that and the collateral damage for such a weapon would be outrageous.

Next time you complain about a mass murdering regime or a dictator who commits genocide, I think we ought to look deep down inside ourselves and ask “Are we actually better than them?”

$25,000 and $1,000 per round are pocket-change in comparison to the cost of just one significant injury to a single squad member. If each “Punisher” in the field prevents just one such injury per 1,000 rounds deployed – a very conservative estimate, IMO – how much does that save us in med-evac flights, surgery, recuperation, and physical therapy? Add the additional costs of deploying another soldier to keep the unit at fighting strength and the costs of long-term disabilities and “The Punisher” is an absolute steal at that price.

Factor in the rapid decline in per-unit and per-round costs which we should see through higher-volume production, and those beauties are cheap at any price. Also consider that the next-gen ammo will probably include penetrators – to knock a bloddy big hole in just about any wall – just in case there are no window to shoot through :-)

The real magic is in the smart ammo.. not easily duplicated. They have a smart 40mm grenade launcher as well. It sounds like you need to get in under 200 yards or so, though. Note the empty M107 in the background at 1:43.

      I want one, too.

Everyone wants one until they have to hump one, and its ammo, and its batteries(many of them if you are in the cold or extreme heat, then again it may not even work in extreme conditions). I love how they say the soldiers love it when only a hand full have used it, most likely in favorable conditions. Don’t put away the M4, SR25, M32 and M203 just yet… this thing has been on development forever and still can’t get it wright, they only tell you the pretty and keep the ugly under wraps, until they get a contract and we get stuck in the field with a $25,000.00 paper weight.

      Remember the ‘e’s?

This is an absolutely PERFECT example of e4 — of what makes America the envy of the entire world, and what can save the country.

And don’t worry, you can bet the farm that if some entrepreneur invented it, they also invented countermeasures for it if it falls into enemy hands. However, at $1000/round, no one in the third world is going to be able to afford to shoot it. Remember, these are people that have to make IEDs — IMPROVISED explosive devices — because they don’t actually have the funds for real land mines.

      I’m not worried.

Wonder how well they will love it when it is used on their own families and friends in the USA? Think not? Guess again.

I think not. unless the new “obama-army’ has them. but if it comes to that, I’m pretty sure at least 80% of our armed forces will be on the side of America. NOT obama.

And as a former Marine, can I just say….

OUTSTANDING analysis! leave out the human cost and just present the cost-savings like you just did and you are absolutely right! This expensive gun and ammo way save MILLIONS of dollars, let alone save thousands of lives!
At the same time, win us FAR more battles through its deployment!
      I LOVE this weapon!

I knew something didn’t seem right. , the audio says two and a half football fields range, but the video graphics imply 500 meters, so that equates to over 5 football fields. I’ll stick with 500 meters… the media type who did the report probably has never shot anything more lethal than a squirt gun.

The attraction of this thing (and the 40mm smart launcher) is the ability to laze a wall for range and then aim and shoot just over it (or through a window) to get the explosive to detonate precisely on the other side of the barrier. Nifty, but I think it would be more fun and more reliable to punch though the wall and just blow everything up with a .50 cal and some Raufoss explosive rounds.

If you can find it there was a military channel program I saw over a year ago that featured this weapon. I think the name of the show was Super Weapons and was hosted by an ex navy seal. If you deployed 3 per squad and the rest were equiped with the normal or advanced weapons in development the actual cost would go down because there would be less casualties on our side and less shooting. Plus the added psychological value of the enemy knowing they would have no place to hide so all there missions would essentially be suicide missions which would suit me fine. The Job of a soldier is to make the otherside die for there country or beliefs.

Who wouldn’t love an airburst shell in the palm of your hands?
