U.S. to Apologize for Shock STD Experiments in Guatemala

NBC News is reporting:

U.S. government medical researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala, including institutionalized mental patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis without their knowledge or permission more than 60 years ago.
Many of those infected were encouraged to pass the infection onto others as part of the study.

The apology is expected to come later this morning.

    well, they were probably sharing research they dug out of Hitlers bunkers after the war – afterall sounds like the kind of experiments the Nazi’s did against the jews. However, I would like to know how much the US paid Guatemala to let them do these experiments.

    FINALLY!!! I have been lying awake at night wondering when we were going to apologize for this and today’s the day! I’m just giddy, knowing I can sleep in peace, now that some abominable act that happened when my grandparents were kids, and that was committed by people who are no longer alive, has at last been apologized for by people who had nothing to do with it.

    While we’re at it, let me get these apologies off my chest: Blacks – sorry, my ancestors were bad, bad people and on their behalf I apologize, even though they never owned any slaves; Indians – sorry, my ancestors were bad, bad people and on their behalf I apologize, even though they never killed any of your ancestors; Chinese – sorry, my ancestors were bad, bad people and on their behalf I apologize, even though they never owned any railroads that forced you into slave labor; Brits – sorry, my ancestors were bad, bad people and on their behalf I apologize, even though your ancestors were kind of asking for it during the War of Independence. I feel like I’m leaving some people out… oh well, to anyone who was slighted by people who are long dead and buried, sorry, my ancestors were bad, bad people and on their behalf I apologize for whatever it is that my self-righteous contemporaries feel was so egregious it requires a meaningless apology decades or centuries after the fact by descendants of people who had nothing to do with whatever happened.

    Read “ Poison Plum” and “ Lab 257” the government more than likely has done more of this …..they refuse to acknowledge that Lyme Disease has become a major problem in every state in this country, the CDC has set up such restrictive diagnostic criteria that even they admit the amount of cases each year is probably 10 times the number of reported cases. Formerly productive people, like me, now suffer with pain and disabilities for which there is no cure due to the lack of education of our medical professionals , this has gone on over 30 yrs

    People need to wake up, the government is not our friend and their control of our healthcare system will not help our individual health at all.

    If you look around on the internet you can find that they indeed did experiment on US.. however.. some AMERICANS found it distasteful and worried if we found out there would be a problem ..

      Hit the nail on the head with this one! I have been saying the same thing for the last year or so, we need to start starving the beast. Any government that is spending what we do on these controversial experiments (both domestic and foreign) is too big. The amount that we spend on foreign aid alone is staggering and I shutter to think about the money being spend on programs that we have no idea about. Going Galt is starting to look like an option.

      Truman, the same liberal democrat who ordered the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, He followed FDR who had established relocation and internment camps for Japanese Americans. Americans of Italian and German ancestry were also targeted along with some Jewish refugees.

      United States Executive Order 9066 was a United States presidential executive order signed and issued during World War II by U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on February 19, 1942 ordering Japanese Americans to internment camps.

    Apologizing is what Obama does best! In this case, what was done is absolutely unconscionable. People cannot be used as lab rats. We have no moral authority to tell other countries about human rights when we don’t seem to have very much respect for human life (our government doesn’t) ourselves. This is the kind of thing that is done without the knowledge of the American people, which we would never condone, that makes people of other countries who DO know that it goes on, hate America. And THIS IS NOT WHO WE ARE! This is, unfortunately, what our apathy allowed our government to become. It is not representative of us as people. We don’t make our corporations respect the safety and lives of people in other countries, we probably can’t do that, but these people represent us when they are in other countries poisoning their water supplies with their chemicals as we don’t allow them to do here. Can any one of us imagine actually infecting an unknowing person with a venereal disease on purpose? And allowing that person to die, when a simple shot of penicillin would cure the disease, just so we could watch the progress until death? I think, I hope that the answer for the vast majority of us, is an emphatic “no!” We must demand that our government and our corporations be truly representative of our values as a society. SOME regulation, when it comes to the effects of Americans as corporations or laboratories in regards to making people ill in other countries, is absolutely necessary. They are obviously not going to do it themselves. I wish I knew how to do that.

      Broker, you are right…….. Has BHO installed an apology czar yet? That Czar’s budget would be huge and a very busy place to work. Speaking of apologies. Even though I did not vote for BHO let me apologize to the world for his atrocities now. I’m sure 20 plus years from now things are going to come to light regarding stuff he is doing in our name behind our backs that no one knows about presently.

      Indeed, as iamhungry said, this is a horrible thing to have done and absolutely requires the deepest of apologies. If anybody had done the same to us, would we not demand it? If nothing else Obama has apologized for deserves it, this certainly does.

    Food supplies are also a world wide danger. If you don’t know about Monsanto (maker of Roundup), check into it. There’s a film about this company and seeds/world food supplies. I’ve only had access to one source, so I don’t know truth/fiction, but evidently you can be sued by Monsanto for exposing the truth–Bush Sr. involved. I wish Glenn would talk about it.
