U.S. Troops in Afghanistan Asked to Disarm in Panetta’s Presence After Truck Incident

U.S. Troops Disarm at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan for Leon Panetta

Earlier in the day Wednesday, an Afghan driver somehow caught ablaze after he crashed a stolen truck at Camp Bastion — a British air field — in Afghanistan just as U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta’s plane was landing nearby.

No one in Panetta’s party was hurt, but the bizarre incident has prompted some nervous reactions — namely, Marines and other troops gathered in a tent at Camp Leatherneck to hear Panetta speak, were abruptly asked to disarm.

The NY Times explains:

In a sign of the nervousness surrounding the visit, Marines and other troops among the 200 people gathered in a tent at Camp Leatherneck to hear Mr. Panetta speak were abruptly asked by their commander to get up, place their weapons — M-16 and M-4 automatic rifles and 9-mm pistols — outside the tent and then return unarmed. The commander, Sgt. Maj. Brandon Hall, told reporters he was acting on orders from superiors.

“All I know is, I was told to get the weapons out,” he said. Asked why, he replied, “Somebody got itchy, that’s all I’ve got to say. Somebody got itchy; we just adjust.”

Typically, American forces in Afghanistan keep their weapons with them when the defense secretary visits. The Times adds context:

Later, American officials said that the top commander in Helmand, Maj. Gen. Mark Gurganus, had decided on Tuesday that no one would be armed while Mr. Panetta spoke to them, but the word did not reach those in charge in the tent until shortly before Mr. Panetta was due to arrive.

General Gurganus told reporters later that he wanted a consistent policy for everyone in the tent. “You’ve got one of the most important people in the world in the room,” he said. He insisted that his decision had nothing to do with the shooting on Sunday. “This is not a big deal,” he said.

In his remarks to the group, Panetta said, “We will be challenged by our enemies, we will be challenged by ourselves, we will be challenged by the hell of war itself.”

WHAT. Disarming troops and placing weapons outside where a rogue “friendly” can acquire the weapons. Service members are shot in offices in secure areas by supposed “friendly’s”, and the order is to place weapons outside a tent? Are they afraid Panetta might pi** someone off and get shot?

First — Never compare or think that putting those freaking ragheads next to a U.S. Marine even comes close to making them one. Hell no, it ain’t so! Marines EARN the title and those ragheads don’t even come close.

Second — Panetta is scared to death that some Marine over there is going to “defend the constitution” while he is around. He does work for the Dictator-in Charge so he must be more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rockers over there.

Third — Panetta is one of those California Socialists raised on communist upbringings. Trace the histories of many of the czars that $#!^-for-brains has in his “Kremlin” and you will have an “Ah-ha” experience.

I don’t have a problem with that either. If Panetta hates our troops, let him take a bullet and die for his Country that he and Obama says they love so much. Agreed!

This is absolutely a disgraceful show of the admin’s respect for and understanding of our soldiers. Let the sec def walk around without sec svc and their guns, ‘just to keep it fair’.

The bigger question is, why would the Sec Def of USA feel the need to disarm the very soldiers in his presence who would protect him; whom he commands? What did he think would happen?

It is disgusting how our troops are treated. The respect this gov’t has toward our soldiers/heros; and all of the other decent American people is sad, unfortunate………………………………..It’s Evil! That word sums it all up. And it’s occurring at an exponential rate. Josef Stalin quote:
“America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within”. This is EXACTLY what is happening now! This applies to libs, reps, conservatives, dems, progressives….. everyone. Maybe if you THINK you’re part of the class that will make it to the ruling class by screwing everyone else over; think again because you are the tools of the true elite: Weak – Useful idiots with no core, (Chris Matthews comes to mind). Having served since the late 1970′s and still going strong, I can assure you the military has been undermined by political forces and intentionally made weak by bolsheviks in the American government. The combat arms troops are being undermined by legal edicts that prevent them from defending the US against all enemies foreign and domestic.

I’ll give you just one example; Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, a Bella Abzug/Gloria Steinem loving lib socialist from Colorado set out to destroy the military 35 years ago. Of course the higher up officers are all oathbreakers and socialists. They handpick their underlings for advancement and they are mostly there because of affirmative action and the like. While at MALS-39, I had to fill out multiple E.O. surveys to meet the numbers we had to have filled out because some people were on leave or liberty that day and I answered them truthfully. I said in all of the ones that I filled out that I did not see a need for the E.O. Officer and that affirmative action is really just state sanctioned racism. I cited the fact that our CO, XO, and SgtMaj were all black as proof that skin color does not and should not be an issue in today’s military so continuing with these programs was a waste of time and energy.

Needless to say, they tried to track down the writers of these anonymous surveys for punishment. I believe that they traced it back to my division and that my 30 year Master Gunnery Sergeant told them to take their B.S. elsewhere. Thank you Master Gunnery Sergeant! So the CO had the entire unit take worthless classes where he stood up in front of us and just yelled about how we were all racist. I believe that he showed his true colors and that everyone in my unit knew who the real racist was that day.

The vast majority detest Obama and Clinton. I have seen it in uniform. I’d say black troops are extremely loyal to Obama. There is a huge racial schism in the military that has been there since I’ve been in long ago. The military has a facade of unity in this regard. But the higher up you go, the more the higher ranking officers abandon allegiance to god and country and the more they adhere to their masters. Only faithful servants move way up. I’d add too that I once worked for current Army Chief of Staff years ago. He’s a good man from all I can see. Great American. His son lost his arm in combat. Watch some of the lawyers behind the scenes. They are the danger. And even with that, I can say for sure that even military lawyers (most of them) love their country and are “mindful” of what this administration is doing. People are biding their time. Joe Biden’s son was an Army JAG. Don’t know how he is as a person. I don’t care for Joe Biden at all, so makes me wonder. Obama and Biden are cut from the same bolshevik cloth, so you know that they have made efforts to populate the military with some of their cronies. But the military culture is strong and can fight against some of this stuff. It happens over the long haul. For sure, the Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff did not give a good answer to Senator Sessions as to the legal authority over our military. Big red flag for me.

As for the unionization article, I can say I have not heard any rumblings of this in military. But one key point in the article was that things are done over the long haul; slowly. That is how radical change is made.

Look at radical change in US. Once, to have a child out of wedlock, it was shameful. Now it is not. Now, 70% of kids in Detroit are born out of wedlock to single moms. Guess who their daddy is? You. You pay for that child.

Same with military. Anyone who’s been in and has seen the interaction between males and females in military units knows what is going on. Once, we had order and discipline. A PFC would not just chat it up with a Staff Sergeant, for example. Now, it is common. Why? Females broke down the barriers. A SSG, just like any guy, wants some of that. In the barracks, 18-21 year olds drinking, males and females, going at it like rabbits. So then you do your job in uniform and we have good order and discipline after everyones going at it? No way. It breaks down.

Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder was breaking down those barriers in the 1970′s. It’s been going for a long time. It undermines our nation’s strength. It is the long haul; the slow plod to destruction. That is why eternal vigilance is on unit crests and part of our heritage. Vigilance. Don’t let your guard down. But we have, and now we pay for it. We must set it right.

The disarming of the Marines in Pannetta’s presence speaks VOLUMES about what the troops think of the Obama administration, and the administration is aware of it. The troops have shown amazing restraint thus far. How can they not be offended when a military man kills people in Afghanistan (wrongly) and within days it is called a capital murder case, but Muslim Hasan murders troops at Ft Hood and it is languishing in the court system, is referred to as “workplace violence” and not murder and NO ONE in the administration is called for the death penalty! Can it be made any clearer that there is a decided Muslim bias here. Then of course note that the new #3 in the DOJ is a Muslim defender and has been put in charge of Gitmo. It truly is insane treachery.

No, your stretching this way to far. What it means is that the military and the govt realize that they can’t stop an infiltrator disguised as a US marine from gaining entrance and trying to kill the SecDef. It speaks volumes about the SECURITY in Afghanistan that we can’t secure our own bases.

The other thing it speaks volumes about is that the govt doesn’t care that much about our soldiers (nothing new here) or they’d solve that problem. Only when a civilian govt official shows up do they do anything, and it’s a temporary patch to protect ONE person.

The Ft Hood debacle was the result of a Clinton administration’s touchy feely policy to disarm US soldiers on US bases, VA hospitals and other federal facilities. As a result such locations are target rich environments for terrorists and their ilk. The Fort Hood massacre had to be stopped by civilian off base police since we couldn’t trust those in the military with evil guns. Extending such policy to a war zone seems a little insane, but this administration carries such to an art form.

      @theburningtruth:
I disagree with you about this being “stretched to far”, when former pres clinton visited troops in the Balkans back during the mid-1990′s, all troops had to have their M-16/M-4 rifles opened up “shot-gun style” with the bolts taken out and carried in the soldiers hand in plain view. Off duty soldiers weren’t even allowed to stay in their quarters, they had to attend sick winkys speech, supposedly for “security reasons”, I’ll cite “ego reasons”.
I just have to ask…how did America let such a small group of liberal progs make life for everyone else so crappy?

“one of the most important men……” So this individual is perceived to be more important than the 200 plusother trained men and women serving in this theater attending the dog and pony show. Is it just me, or is this utterly asinine? Left completely defenseless to whatever the terrorist attack of the day is. We need to pull our military out and cut our losses. We’re not in it to win it. It is a culture ran by a government where neither can be reasoned with.

I’m reminded of a conversation with a buddy of mine who served in a unit that I was in. When they were first deployed they were issued 50Cal to put on top of their communications humvee’s, but no ammo. So make yourself a target of opportunity to the terrorists, but we’re not going to give you the tools to defend yourself. What a bunch of d*bags.

Does the Obama administration feel that they have cause a rift between themselves and our great soldiers? You bet they do. A man who has no idea what he’s doing and filters every decision he makes through a political prism. Generals forced to resign after expressing the frustration at him…ad nauseum. Heck….no one can even name ONE SOLE policy of Obama’s that led to the demise of Bin Laden. All he’s done is either make life more difficult for our troops by imposing ridiculous rules of engagement on them, or has merely perpetuated Bush’s policies as they suit him…and takes credit for them when he sees success from them..like the killing of OBL.
