U.S. Troops Posed With Mangled Bodies of Afghan Bombers (GRAPHIC)

Content warning — this post contains graphic images.

U.S. troops posed for photos with the mangled remains of suspected Afghan bombers, the Los Angeles Times reported.

An American soldier released 18 images to the newspaper, taken in 2010 after members of the 82nd Airborne Division were tasked with inspecting the body parts of insurgents who had blown themselves up:

They inspected the body parts. Then the mission turned macabre: The paratroopers posed for photos next to Afghan police, grinning while some held — and others squatted beside — the corpse’s severed legs.

A few months later, the same platoon was dispatched to investigate the remains of three insurgents who Afghan police said had accidentally blown themselves up. After obtaining a few fingerprints, they posed next to the remains, again grinning and mugging for photographs.

Two soldiers posed holding a dead man’s hand with the middle finger raised. A soldier leaned over the bearded corpse while clutching the man’s hand. Someone placed an unofficial platoon patch reading “Zombie Hunter” next to other remains and took a picture.

The Times published two of the 18 photos. The images have sparked outrage and condemnation from U.S. military leaders, who have said an investigation is underway.

“It is a violation of Army standards to pose with corpses for photographs outside of officially sanctioned purposes,” Army spokesman George Wright told the Times. “Such actions fall short of what we expect of our uniformed service members in deployed areas.”

Gen. John Allen, commander of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, strongly condemned the photos and called the behavior depicted “entirely inconsistent with the values of ISAF [International Security Assistance Force] and all service members of the 50 ISAF countries serving in Afghanistan.”

Before the images were even published online, Pentagon press secretary George Little said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta “rejects the conduct depicted in these 2-year-old photographs,” according to the Associated Press.

“Anyone found responsible for this inhuman conduct will be held accountable in accordance with our military justice system,” Little said.

One image published shows a soldier posing in front of the body of an insurgent whose hand appears to be on the soldier’s shoulder, with another member of the military looking down at the corpse. The second shows a group of people, including uniformed American soldiers, posing with what looks like the mangled legs of an insurgent.

According to the Times, the photos were taken during a yearlong deployment of the 3,500-member brigade, which saw 35 of its soldiers killed during that period. At least 23 were killed by homemade bombs or suicide bombers, the Times reported.

The soldier who provided the photos to the Times — who did so on the condition of anonymity — told the newspaper virtually all of the troops pictured had friends wounded or killed by homemade bombs.

“They were frustrated, just pissed off — their buddies had been blown up by IEDs [improvised explosive devices],” the soldier said. “So they sort of just celebrated.”

Times editor Davan Maharaj said of the the decision to publish the images: “After careful consideration, we decided that publishing a small but representative selection of the photos would fulfill our obligation to readers to report vigorously and impartially on all aspects of the American mission in Afghanistan, including the allegation that the images reflect a breakdown in unit discipline that was endangering U.S. troops.”

The photos come at a critical time for the American mission in Afghanistan: In January, video emerged of what appeared to be U.S. Marines urinating on the corpses of dead Taliban fighters. One month later, the inadvertent burning of Korans at a U.S. base set of days of deadly riots around the country and resulted in the deaths of several U.S. troops, including two shot inside the Afghan Foreign Ministry. Last month, a U.S. Army sergeant allegedly went on a shooting rampage in an Afghan village, killing nine children and eight adults.

But it is OK for the enemy to drag our boys’ bodies through streets, hang ‘em up, burn ‘em, and other mutilations?
I have never understood why it is OK for our enemies to do whatever they want to our troops, yet we must cater to the whims of our enemies. Actually, to the stupid libs on our side of the battle.
When will we ever get back to winning a conflict instead of killing our boys by whussing around in a war zone for too long?
On Guadelcanal jeeps and tanks had the heads of japanese displayed on them to un-nerve the enemy. What they did to our boys was much worse. The American solder does not have the reputation for torture but almost every enemy we have gone against has done so to their enemies. and their own peoples. However our own libs want to claim atrocties by our guys any time they can. Too many years of letting the libs abuse and sissify our military personel gets into these drawn out conflicts where we lose troops unnessecarily. We need more George Pattons!

      @Krutch
Are you really trying to live up to their standards? It’s not about who hit who first, it’s about being a civilized society and not tolerating barbarity.

      Analogy:
You are an adult, a baby hits you in the face during a temper tantrum. Are you going to wind up and clock it in the face because “well he hit me!” or are you going to act like the ADULT YOU ARE and set an example for others to follow.

      Grow up man!

Are you seriously trying to compare America with that country? You need a reality check. I expect more from my troops because we have running water, electricity, and respect Human Rights.

THIS IS WAR … or we should get the hell out of there. The bottom line is that in a war the goal is to defeat, to kill, the enemy. To destroy his will to fight, his desire to live for his beliefs that compel him to fight. UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER is the goal. Until the enemy reaches a total lost of faith, belief in his life he will only continue to fight. If we leave, those we protect will die and those who hate us will rule. Either way, we are directly or indirectly blamed for the death of those who do not oppose us. Bottom line, we should be killing and creating the respect of fear in the hearts of others. Not demonstrating we are somehow not like those who hate us. TSA creates fear, strips searches us, steals from us and you okay with that? F these Muslims, kill them until they hate being Muslims

War is hell and it’s real so pull your head out of your pompous behind and thank God that some braver men then you are over there dealing with it. “Are you really trying to live up to their standards?”

Reminds me of when the Right turned on the faux outrage machine about the so-called “ground zero mosque” (which was neither at ground zero nor a mosque) and I would hear cons say “in Saudi Arabai they won’t let anyone build Christian church”. My two thoughts in response were always, “Yes, that’s the difference between us and them”, and “don’t forget, the Saudis were George Dubya’s buddies”.

@VoteBushIn12 – Are you a moron, or do you just sound that way? War is hell, and you should be thrown right in the middle of it to see how it is. A baby slapping you? These guys are skilled at killing men, women and children (using children as suicide bombers) without remorse. And when our troops send a bunch of them to meet Allah, it’s payback time. We aren’t in Afghanistan to be nice little children – they already brag that American soldiers are weak and spineless. Guess a few of them don’t fit that description.

Far as I’m concerned, the more of these fanatics we kill, the fewer of them are around to set off IEDs, use bombs and guns and otherwise kill our troops. My faithful wish is that we get all of our guys out of that hellish sandbox and let them kill each other off.

What I don’t understand, Krutch, is why the only time our dictator-in-chief gets perturbed is when a muslim is killed by an an American. Well, I actually do understand … was being a little facetious there. I think we all fully understand by this time what we‘ve allowed to sit in the President’s chair in the oval office.

It’s the same thing racially back home in the U.S. with regard to black v. non-black (i.e., Sanford, Florida). Had the media and Treyvon Martin’s parents shown photos of what Treyvon actually looked like as of the day he was killed (instead of the picture of him as a young, innocent-looking thirteen-year-old), do you really believe Obama would have declared that if he (Obama) had a son, his son would have looked like Treyvon? Since it takes two to tango, I wonder if Obama‘s spouse concurred in her spouse’s assessment of what her male progeny would look like (she seems always to be overly self-involved in her body and how she looks and how she wants others to look).

I may not have seen war, but I have friends and family that has – some of which saw combat and saw their brother’s fall.

Every single one of them denounces these actions. Non of my friends or family took pleasure in humiliating their fallen enemy. It is disrespectful to your fellow man. It is disgraceful. It is uncivilized. And above all else it is inhumane. Being a soldier does not mean giving up your morals!

Soldiers do what they do to gain a strategic advantage in combat – “IN COMBAT”. It is for this same reason that we don’t parade through villages killing civilians.

We do only what is absolutely necessary to obtain the advantage and win the hearts and minds. Taking pictures of yourself in appropriate positions over mutilated bodies of the enemy does nothing to further the mission objectives. It is cruel.

The fact I have to explain this is exactly why you – as well as all soldiers who think this is acceptable behavior – are the problem in the world.

What would I say to insurgents doing the same thing? I would say that is barbaric, inhumane, uncivilized, and down right evil. The only difference is those insurgents don‘t fly my country’s flag and don’t represent my people on the national scale.

The Middle East is a 7th century Bedoin/Muslim cess pool. Isreal is the ONLY country in the Middle East that lives in the current times and is worth anything!

I grew up in the 1950s. I remember hearing the stories from WW II of adults – family/Boy Scouts/Explorers, etc. about what happened to particular Nazi and SS officers in Europe and the Japs in the South Pacific after they committed their war attrocities to our troups.

The only difference is those insurgents don‘t fly my country’s flag and don’t represent my people on the national scale.” I also appreciated your quote from the Geneva Convention.

After WWII America was viewed as the moral leader of the world. We fought when war was forced upon us. During war we abided by Geneva Convention and our own rules of moral conduct during war. And, after the war, the US prosecuted those of other countries who violated the Geneva Convention. We, at that time, had the moral authority to do so. Because America was exceptional and, even during war, abided by the Christian morality, and the Geneva Convention.

But the responses you got here show clearly that many do not believe in American exceptionalism. They don’t understand how smiling and holding up a dead torso, or photos of torture undermines the moral authority our country once had. These people defend torture of captives, they defend the desecration of the dead. And they declare in no uncertain terms that America has no moral authority in the world, that America is not exceptional.

That’s not my view of America, but I guess the good Christians here don’t believe that America has a higher moral standard than those we fight.

This is nice romantic thinking. How noble. But not a wit of reality in your honorable display. Ponder the fact that we are all “animals”. Everyone of us. Go without food for a week or two, or watch your family or friends tortured…see your animal side. We are all animals underneath our warm and fuzzy exterior, pretending to be civil. Reading the news…every day sees insanity.
I praise and adore all you soldiers…and thank you from the bottom of my heart that you fought, died, were maimed, and survived all the ugly wars. We send our men and women to uncivilized wars. Sometimes we thank them, sometimes we shame them. Regarding these pictures: the dead men are dead…matters not what happens to them. These soldiers did NOT maim or kill them. I say leave these soldiers alone! They are youngsters fighting a terrible war, doing what boys and some girls) do. Caught up in the moment…I might have done the same thing. I admit these things now that I’m a 65 years old woman. Life…many times…sucks. Let’s get off our high horse and praise these soldiers for their contributions. What matters is that they chose to serve. Some pose with dead people. Some don’t. Carry your own cross and not judge others how they carry theirs. Dead people are dead…feel nothing. “We do only what is absolutely necessary to obtain the advantage…”
And that is why we’re losing. We are fighting to “not lose” while they are fighting to WIN!
They are fighting a W A R and we’re trying to be the lovable policemen who give out candy and toys for tots.
We will continue losing until SOMEONE in our military reads “The Art of War” or a similar text. They(Military leadership, esp the Commander in Chief) are successfully doing everything they can to throw away the lives of our finest countrymen by acting like libs who think the enemy is anything BUT a bunch of savages who need to be put down as brutally, quickly, and in as many numbers as possible.
War is not “nice” or “humane” or any other stupid term you people come up with to describe how we should be fighting it. It is HELL on earth and the best way to deal with that is to make it as hellish as possible for the enemy, thereby ending it quickly and bringing our boys home safely.
I do not care how many of the enemy we kill, I do not care how they are killed, I only care that the good people of this world, OUR brave soldiers return home safely.
Do whatever you have to, to come home boys, WE THE PEOPLE support you…

We expect more from our troops because we are netter than those barbarians. I know war is stressful and those guys need an outlet…some just choose the wrong way. They are young and prone to fits of irrational judgement.

I also feel we have been there too long. I say we clean house and wipe the floor with them and make their country the 51st state of US-ISTAN. allow our companies to drill for oil there and sell it here and around the world until our costs are covered….then they can have it back in say 100 years when they get more civilized.

Obviously you dont know what the the japanese did to us in world war two.
They would hang our men up, then cut the mans balls off and force feed it to him, so he would choke to death on them. Well we retalliated by chopping off their heads and using them as ashtrays and bashing out their golden teeth. But heres the thing. They did it with the man wide awake and alert. We did it with the man dead. They would play dead, then pop up with grenades behind their back and pull the pin. Obviously you dont know what they did to us in Vietnam. The POW camps? yeah, they did worse. So look a little at history before you start saying stuff. I understand acting like an adult but frankly, the excuse of being a four year old throwing a temper tantrum if a complete nusance. Its a four year old for chistsake. I have two friends currently serving in Iraq. Close friends. One was a college teammate of mine, he was a national qualifier and an team captain everyone respected (he’s in the Marines) and the other was a year younger than me in Boy Scouts, we worked on each other’s Eagle Projects and shared tents together on weekend outings (he’s in the Army). One of my friends in College had her cousin KIA just three years ago. Her, and her family, were understandably devastated and it rubbed off on everyone.

I understand the sacrifice these Men and Women make. But I know for a fact none of the soldiers I know would ever act in the manner this article describes. They’d agree with me when I say this is disgraceful behavior.

Go sign up, grab a freaking gun, watch your friends die needlessly and then come and condemn taking pictures with the same animals that are trying to kill you. How dare you judge them! We ask these guys to be killers and then act like diplomats. We are more merciful and ethical than our enemies. If taking pictures with the remains of the enemy is the worse thing we do, than name one of our enemies, past or present that is above that. Go put on a uniform or shut up.

Use your brain and understand that the Middle East was conveniently provided as a replacement for Communist Russia which was poised to destroy the US at anytime. Yea right. We could easily bring such countries to their knees in a month with our weaponry. But there is no money to be made with such short wars. Get beyond the parlor games the military industrial complex wants you to focus on. The Arab plot to kill all Americans. It was BS when it was communist Russia and it is BS now. Time to invest $$ in the US and if someone attacks us, wipe them out with the absurd amount of weapons we already have.

@Votebushin12 Your silly rantings about your judgements of right and wrong are just sickening. They are the positions of an uninitiated idealist child. Your deep need to portray yourself as a moral superior is a standard liberal feel good tactic. I’m sure you look at the rest of the world and just shake your head about how stupid they are and in need of your sparkling intellect. Only a well fed, educated person like you who is completely isolated from any ill the world has to offer could really understand things the way they really are. Ever loose a leg? An Arm? Ever loose a best friend to a mad bomber? I really think your lacking in the legitimate opinion department if your education of the real world does not include any real adversity beyond recovery from the drunk you put on last evening at the party. So i guess the best way to put it is that how dare you judge a person and their actions when the only real life experience you have to back up your opinion is that you are a sanctimonious jackass who simply thinks they know better than anybody else. Sit on your pedestal and make judgements from your moral plateau that only you in your self appointed authority have the morality to stand on. How long must be bask in your moral superiority before we grasp how fully right you are? You have assigned yourself the truly lofty position of moral arbiter and we shriek with joy at your purity. Yes, I am satisfied. If you wore the uniform and was there, then I respect your opinion. Of course, you know there plenty of other veterans who disagree with you. Also, I‘m sure I’m older than you if you did 2 tours in Iraq so I’ll say the military is gradually becoming more PC and drastically so in the last 10 years. Pictures with the dead enemy has gone on since the civil war so, realize you are judging those veterans too.

To everyone else, I think we should pull our troops out tomorrow. I agree this war is needless and stupid. That’s not for a soldier to decide. We follow lawful orders. They were lawfully order to go fight and that is what they are doing. I would also blame the military leadership for allowing these pictures to happen.

But, I will not sit in the safety of my own home and judge these men who live under the very real possibility of dying horrifically so I can feel good about myself about how I THINK I would act in their position. I would not want these men dishonorably discharged to where they can’t vote or own land again over this. Should they have done it? No. Am I staying up at night over it? Nope. How horrible that I say this you say? How my inner desires and comments are misaligned with the Army values of respect and honor… How can I respect an enemy that desecrates our dead soldiers and citizens at every opportunity? How can I honor and respect an enemy that tortures and kills our captured soldiers? How can I honor an enemy that uses women and children as human shields, uses pregnant women as bait in car bombs, to have children throw hand grenades at us, and views and uses suicide vests/bombs as an acceptable means of fighting? Why should I allow the enemy to take advantage of my values when the enemy does not observe the rules of warfare?

VOTEBUSHIN12, LOL after that last post I get a picture of some little kid shaking a DOD Pam in his hand as though at the rest of us….see….see….I now know it all! By your interpretation I suppose that the Navy SEALs who shot then photographed and videoed Osama should face a hanging in one of those elevator shafts at Ft Leavenworth. I have personally never done anything like what is pictured here, and would never unless it had something to do with my assigned duties at the time. But yeah, I have had to photograph quite a number of bodies. I grant you that none of them looked nice either. Maybe you would want me charged as well.
As for Rules Of Engagement, they are written for particular ops and may be recycled with op name changes if they apply. Others are written for long term engagements but often do change. They are in no way carved into stone forever. You sir, have no idea of what you speak. I‘ve read all three versions of the Geneva Convention as of the early ’90s. Okay, the second was convened in Den Hague, or The Hague to you. Made for the most dry reading I have ever done. I still don’t see some of these photographs as desecration of a body. Only until recently many of the states’ laws did not have severe penalties for doing any such thing. The rules by the GC allows for a nation’s military to deal with this as they see fit. Naturally, with the left in charge now, the likes of you will apparently want blood.

Taking pictures for the purpose of evidence or otherwise official business (as is the case with Bin Laden) is completely different than posing with the deceased so as to bring shame upon the dead. Posing with the dead body, smiling, and pretending it’s a trophy kill is disgusting and absolutely NOT acceptable behavior. You said it yourself, “The rules by the GC allows for a nation’s military to deal with this as they see fit.” Our military handles it via discharge; I say these soldiers are deserving of one.

Yeah kill things and blow stuff up – not pose for pictures with the remains of the enemy casualties of war.

Get your priorities straight. Stop condoning acts of inexplicable barbarity. This is a civilized world, start acting like you live in it. War is an unfortunate consequence, but it can still be (AND SHOULD BE) handled with dignity.

Your right man. this is not how it works. That war should have started with the absolute hand of god descending down on them like a storm that can’t be escaped. We should have fought a war and not gone there to police the place. We should have sent a wall of fire and death across the desert that would have left 10 generations in fear. We should have made the land sterile (More so than it is). We have the power to break mountains in half and we should. Only then will these people learn that war has a real price. Man must come to fear war but liberals want war to be kind and less painful. you can’t make war pretty. The day you make men unafraid to war is the first day of an unending war. The way of the peacenic is the real path of doom. Peace is found only through strength.. You will not stop a religious zelot with kind words and a teddy bear wielding counselor. you must break an enemy’s will to fight you and then those that remain can live in peace. Endless hand wringing over the horrors of war will only serve to make war a common even because enemies are never defeated by being humane to them. let them see their ten thousand year old cities turned to dust in an instant, let them know that their only defense is submission. let them know that we can kill them from a thousand miles away so they never even get to raise their hand to an enemy in conflict before they can die. Then we can have real lasting peace.

Actually, while everyone throws a tissy fit about this, it isn’t uncommon. Investigators and others usually keep some special photos that don’t make it into evidence and tell some very off color jokes about crime scenes, especially when it involves some tard blowing himself to pieces.

Stress in this line of work is a real issue, our main concern should be that the men who were involved got the attention of their shrink to make sure that stress wasn’t getting to them. Other than that, I don’t get the outrage. The haji’s blew themselves to bits and these guys found it funny. Personally, I would have slathered the remains in bacon grease and fed them to the dogs, but that’s because I find the Geneva Conventions on these issues to be a total crock of crud.

The US is obligated under the Geneva Convention on Land Warfare to treat the remains of enemy combatants with respect. Posing with the dead is not showing respect.

Having said that my wife was really po’d when she saw a picture of me eating next to a dead NVA. There was no place to go and I was hungry.

It is ok to celebrate the deaths of rag headed idiots who strap bombs to themselves and try to kill as many other people as they can. The LIB press calls them “Suicide Bombers” while they really are “Homocide Bombers”.

Waht’s the difference? A Suicide Bomber will go to a remote place and blow himself up, whereas a Homocide Bomber will go to a crowded mall, Mosque or public event and try to kill as many as possible.

This is a fact that the Liberal Media can’t seem to understand.
