U2′s Bono Praises George W. Bush‘s AIDS Advocacy on ’The Daily Show’

George W. Bush got some unexpected praise on Wednesday evening on “The Daily Show” when U2 frontman Bono offered his take on the former president’s fight against HIV/AIDS.
Aside from encouraging the American public to remain active in the battle against AIDS, Bono went on to tout Bush’s presidential advocacy. While he acknowledged contributions made by Bill Clinton, among others, he was particularly positive about Bush’s work in helping to stop the spread of the disease.
On the eve of World AIDS Day, Bono said:
“We’re hoping very much that President Obama is going to follow through on what President Bush did. I know that’s hard for you to accept. It was amazing. You know, people like John Kerry worked for this and Hillary Clinton, and eventually President Clinton did some extraordinary stuff renegotiating the prices of … very expensive drugs down.
But George kind of knocked it out of the park. I can tell you, and I’m actually here to tell you, that America now has 5 million people being kept alive by these drugs. That’s something everybody should know.”
Jon Stewart, of course, seemed surprised over the notion that someone would recommend that Obama follow in Bush’s footsteps. Watch the dialogue, below:

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 8:44amNice little angle Mr Bono is making here….yeah the “Evil George Bush” did something “amazing”! That will make “The One” truly upset enough to even give MORE to the cause to puff up himself up! Once again he can use his political clout to say “AIDS has no better ally/foe than my administration”!!! These drugs outside of the USA are MUCH cheaper than IN the USA!! Why you may ask? THE FDA!! The Pharmacutecal Mafia is MUCH worse than ALL the oil companies put together and they have the Demoncrats in their pocket like Oil Companies are in the pockets of the Republicans!!!

And, no, the FDA doesn’t set prices on drugs. That would be the drug companies.

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 12:34pm@jzs..Man…O.K…You are completely right, the FDA doesn’t make the prices…True..But let me see if I can explain this to you so you see how, in fact, they are the key TO pricing…A gas station owner sets his prices, correct?..When he does this he has to price in overhead so he can stay in business and make the profit he feels comfortable with..That factors in all the licensing, government mandates, taxes,employee’s..etc…The FDA makes prices rise because they are in control of the government mandating…This in turn raises the prices…Understand?…I can really break it down for you if you would like?…That should get ya to understand it though…More policies, taxes and mandates are what the government uses to control pricing…Less mandates, better pricing…Hope ya ain’t mad, I was just trying to help…Nothing personal..You enjoy your holiday season, God Bless

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 12:52pmNo problem. Yes, “the government” requires pharmaceutical companies to get FDA approval before marketing a drug. That approval requires the company not only prove that the drug is efficacious, but also that it is without unacceptable side effects. And yes, that costs money. So the company has to recover that money by charging more.
So a lot of people want to get rid of the FDA, but only those who don’t understand what the FDA does. There is a reason we have the FDA to regulate drug companies. One is to keep them from selling you snake oil. The other is to prevent them from selling a product that kills people or deforms children (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalidomide).
But let me explain something now. Drug companies sell drugs for more in the United States because they CAN, not because of extra regulations. Drug companies, like most companies, sell their products at the highest price the market will bear. Nothing else matters. They can sell drugs at a higher price in the US than overseas, so they do. Simple as that.
Report Post »Mtroom
Posted on December 2, 2011 at 1:22pmYes, exactly…The FDA is very important I also believe …I want to have someone who is responsible if “bad” drugs and food hit the shelves..I was just saying, they effect pricing, that was all..
Report Post »PAPPY72
Posted on December 2, 2011 at 1:55pm@JZS and MTROOM – One other factor involved in the pricing of drugs is that many of the socialist countries don’t allow the drug companies to charge market prices in their countries, so these companies pass those costs onto the US consumer. So we are paying not just for the drugs we consume, but also for the drugs other countries consume as well. Certainly, a company has the right to charge whatever price they choose for the product, but a company might have more of an incentive to charge less if they didn’t have to incur unnecessary regulatory costs (both here and internationally).

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 10:23amNo, Bush really was just that bad. Take it from a conservative… he was a lousy president. Unless, I suppose, if you like big government, lying to get us into Iraq, failure to take out OBL after hunting him for seven years, authorization of torture for interrogation, stimulus spending, and setting the stage for the global recession.
The only ironic thing is that Obama’s popularity is still higher, as he’s continued almost every one of these things.
Really, AIDS aid was one of the only positive things Bush did. Just because Obama is bad, doesn’t mean Bush was good.

Nope, you’re dead wrong but thanks for playing. PRESIDENT Bush (show some respect) was not “that bad” but had more good than bad. He wasn’t perfect but no President or human for that matter is perfect unlike your messiah President Obama.
Stop with the lies that “Bush lied, people died”. Stop with all the twisting of facts. Get over your Bush derangement syndrome. It’s old.
If I met him in person I would shake his hand and thank him for his service. I wouldn’t try to arrest him or spit in his face like dickweeds like you would.

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 10:57amWhoaaaa, Looktowardsthelight, might want to drink decaf tomorrow. Let’s break this down then, shall we? I’ll post backup for my claims, you refute them!
-big government: PATRIOT Act stripped our civil liberties, No Child Left Behind hamstrung the school systems, the TSA is a laugh, and shall we mentions the billions of added deficits and debt?
-lying to get us into Iraq: The war was pitched to get rid of WMDs; of which none existed. DoD has admitted that Cheney and Rumsfeld forced them to release any information possible, even without verification (uranium purchases from Nigeria, remember that?)
-failure to take out OBL after hunting him for seven years: Speaks for itself. Two wars, billions to trillions of dollars.
-authorization of torture for interrogation: Speaks for itself. We agreed to not use them, but did anyway. When we needed something ever more vicious, we outsourced.
-stimulus spending: Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 ($152 billion) followed up with $700 billion done before Obama took office
-setting the stage for the global recession: Sarbanes-Oxley, 2004. Gingrich, perceived to be the economic guru of the contenders, says it’ll be the first thing he signs for a repeal, if Congress lets him.
I don‘t know why you’d think I support Obama as I came out and said he’s continued almost all of these and think his popularity should be even lower than Bush, but now’s your chance to refute. Have at it.

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 11:01amOh, and also:
“If I met him in person I would shake his hand and thank him for his service.”
I would too, as any president and person should be respected. And I’m not pushing to prosecute him for war crimes or anything of the sort (seriously, where did THAT come from?). However, I can still say he was a lousy president, and point out clear reasons as to why. And if I ever met him in a debate, I would be happy to tear into him for that.
How a person does their job is a very different matter than how you treat them if you met them. Heck, I’d have a beer summit with Obama gladly, but if the discussion turned political, I‘d probably be thrown out by the secret service for the verbal whiplashing I’d deliver.

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 1:58pmThe problem with Bush is the same problem with obama and the last 3-4 presidents we have had, THEY ARE PROGRESSIVES! Thats it. They were merely puppets to the cartel of the FED. They have no real power until the men behind the curtain say so. The positions and policies are dictated to them. If you are stupid enough to think they have a any control over anything other than the place where they go on vacation, you’re no better than the sheep that you proclaim others to be.
I am not a bush fan or a fan of any of the puppet dictators we have had in office over the last 2 decades. I am a fan of liberty and small government. Get the heel out of my way so I can participate in the american dream of owning my life and doing business as I see fit. If I earn it or buy it, IT IS MINE. I do not owe you money (taxes) just for the privilage to own it, I EARNED IT. GET OUT OF MY BUSINESS and MY LIFE. I answer to God for my dicisions, good or bad. and I try to be honest and live my life as best I can according to his law and the principals of the Constitution. I believe in FREE MARKETS, bad business does not last and if someone can do what you do cheaper or better,(called competition) that, will naturally regulate the environment through the consumer and their satisfaction with your product.
This is what the “American Dream” was all about before the progressives distorted it.
WAKE UP!!

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 2:20pmI really dont‘ care what Bono has to so say and I’m tired of his holier-than-thou lectures. Over 55% of HIV infections in this country belong to less than 2% of the population…homosexual men. That’s an overrepresentation of 2,750%. Speak to them Bono…clearly the message isn‘t reaching them or they can’t control their compulsions long enough to listen. Oh I know…Africa is rife with HIV among heterosexuals..etc…Africa is a lost society, no amount of money will help that continent. They can only help themselves and throwing money at them (like Bush did) isn’t working. Am I saying don’t show compassion? Of course not. I‘m saying Bono’s soft on the real culprits for the magnitude and perpetuation of the disease.

For all idiots saying he‘s a communist and on the Soro’s payroll, you have zero idea who this man is. He has spent twenty five years working to stop famine, the spread of HIV, and debt cancellation to nations that would never be able to repay. He is a good Christian man, loyal to his family and puts politics aside to do what is right.
Shame on the Blaze for writing a sensational headline. What Bono said isn’t new or surprising.
