UCLA Girl Who Filmed Asian Rant Now Getting Death Threats

The young UCLA student who filmed a now-viral rant against Asian people is not only facing possible discipline for her words, but now she’s getting death threats.
(Read our original post on this story.)
Despite issuing an apology through the campus Daily Bruin newspaper for the video called “Asians in the Library,” Alexandra Wallace is facing a strong backlash for her video that first surfaced Friday and drew national attention:
In it, Wallace, a third-year political science student, criticized the school for accepting “these hordes of Asian people” who she said have no manners and disrupted her studies by talking loudly on the phone in the library.
“I’ll be in, like, deep into my studying, into my political science theories and arguments and all that stuff, getting it all down, like, typing away furiously, blah, blah, blah, and then all of a sudden, when I’m about to, like, reach an epiphany, overhear from somewhere: ‘Oh ching chong ling long ting tong, ooohh,” she said.
By Sunday night, the Daily Bruin reports, Wallace had contacted university police to report multiple death threats received by phone and e-mail.
“If she’s received a death threat, I find that as deplorable as her original YouTube video. If this is the response of students on campus, we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Robert Naples, associate vice chancellor and dean of students, told the Bruin.
UCLA Chancellor Gene D. Block said the video doesn’t reflect the views of the university community.
“Like many of you, I recoil when someone invokes the right of free expression to demean other individuals or groups,” he wrote in a statement posted on the university’s website, and echoed that sentiment in a video of his own:
The university is considering what, if any, disciplinary action it can take.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 11:03amThere’s a difference between demeaning people and asking for common curtesy in a library. Shouldn’t the school have made the rules clear about being quiet in the library?
As for the family being there at the apartment complex, there’s nothing wrong with that. They are not using her utilities or her washing machine (unless she has to go to a laundry room and can’t get to a machine because of the outsiders).

I lived in Japan for a long time, and I am baffled by the “Asians in packs are rude” thing I’m seeing here. Oriental Asian culture is much more passive, polite, and considerate of others than our own. If a group of people are being too loud in the library…you address it by saying, “Excuse me, but would you mind keeping it down or moving it outside? I’m trying to study.” You don’t create a fantastically bigoted rant and then post it on YouTube.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 2:49pm@Mrsnix:
I‘ve found from my experience in the US and from talking to others who have visited China that Asians can be rude in a variety of ways that you wouldn’t expect from Westerners. The difference between Asians and Westerners is not that they’re more polite, but they’re more reserved. So they can be rude, they just do it in a passive-aggressive way. So while a rude American will be rude in a confrontational way — ie complaining and whining about things — a rude Asian will be rude in a way that will require you to be the one who confronts them.

Was it demeaning? Pffft not really. If you think that was demeaning you need to grow thicker skin.
Was it constructive? Nope, it was typical behavior for our culture.
See here’s the bigger problem. Our culture is nothing but a bunch of crybaby chickens! What she SHOULD have done, is go to the Asian students that are being disruptive and address to problem head on… but nobody does that anymore because everyone is too freakin chicken and afraid of conflict or even POTENTIAL conflict, so what do we do instead? We make an internet video rant, or we “tweet” about it or facebook post about it. And THEN from the safety of our laptops we pretend to be offended and fire off a bunch of anonymous complaints. It’s really pathetic.
So many “problems” like this would never take place if people would just grow a pair and address their problems and annoyances directly and to the source. Parents, train your kids to not shy away from potential conflict, but to address things directly. You will be doing them such a service.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 1:06pmFor all those posters who are saying she should be disciplined, kicked out or the like, be cautioned when you raise ire at a conservative or agreeable position that is silenced in one way or another you are practicing hypocrisy. How many of you commented in support of the Oregon bus driver who flew the Dixie southern flag? How can you support him and castigate this woman? What she did may not have been wise but she should in no way be officially disciplined or threatened. Mark my words, that reasoning will come back to haunt you somewhere down the road when your views are silenced or punished.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 2:00pmHow would a group of Chinese folks describe an American in China talking on the phone?
“Hey, dude, what’s up man, yada, yada, bro”
That’s how Americans talk.
If you don’t know Chinese, then to us it does sound like “Ching, chong, ling, long”
And that’s racist?
Even if it IS considered racist, which I think is borderline, there’s a little thing called the Bill of Rights.
Her video had the unfortunate timing of coming out on the day of an earthquake in the far east. If she posted that a week earlier there probably wouldn’t be an uproar.

I could care less who she is or how she comes off-doesn’t she have the right to speak her thoughts? Why not? Look-let’s face it-this is no longer the “last bastion of freedom”. It’s a micro-managed, fascist, Orwellian asylum. Is it not? Has it not become that? After all, she IS in TROUBLE with the “AUTHORITIES”. That girl’s survival instincts are not very strong to actually go public with so-called political incorrectness in that state. B. Death threats, over that, whatever you think of her comments, anyone who would be so petty and violent as to make death threats over it are the REAL problem.
C. The fact that she knew what they were probably talking about, and that concerned an epic disaster in which its possible that family members of the person she is upset with are dead and/or missing and still felt the need to slam them warrants counter comments to remind her of whats important.
D. This is why my kids get no facebook, no twitter and no youtube unless a parent is monitering.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 3:33pmFrankly, I found nothing offensive about this young lady’s video. In fact, I found the Chancellor’s response rather pathetic. This girl specifically said she didn‘t have a problem with the Asian’s enrolled in her school she had a problem with those that didn’t demonstrate proper manners in a library setting. Even at the end of the Chancellor’s response he said we all need to respect each other. I suggest the chancellor find out why the library staff is allowing anyone to use cell phones or speak loudly in the library where others are studying.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 4:41pmObviously the fact that this stupid kid is receiving death threats is terrible. Of course this moron had the right to express her opinion–she was indeed exercising her first amendment rights. However, on the topic of university discipline: one must also concede that UCLA has the right to protect its image, which this idiot just trampled on. Employers have the right to fire employees for being unprofessional and for behavior that reflects poorly on the organization. Universities, in this case, have the same right.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 8:20pm@ PPMAN…………..My obvious question then is colleges profess an open mindedness and tolerance as their image. They allow kids that are anti-American to spew. They allow a president of a terrorist state speak his mind on campus in an official capacity. They allow for all kinds of controversial speech against people of faith to occur. Why is most of that never addressed? That reflects pretty poorly on their image doesn’t it? Second point she is not an employee of the University. If anything it is more of the opposite relationship as she pays them money for her education. They work for her. So I see Universities defend a nutty tenured prof. such as Ward Chruchill who is an employee while disciplining someone like this obviously unwise woman. Where is the standard and consistency in these positions? I think it simply is a matter of what is deemed PC rather than some notion of true concern for freedoms in this country. We can all join in one voice to proclaim this video as unwise and to some offensive, but we must always strive to protect freedoms from those who would seek to silence voices they disagree with. This seems to be the consistant stance of the ACLU when you go to their website and they are standing in court battles against employers who try to remove employess rights for private time activities. Just as a balance

BTW, I don’t agree with her expression of free speech, but I guess she has the right to express it. To have free speech, there must not be ‘acceptable’ and ‘unacceptable’ speech (as long as it doesn’t result in harm like yelling fire in a crowded theatre).

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 9:22pmSo what that she said what the right wing are unwilling to say: Asians are inferior in manners and intellect. Of course Muslims are the same, only in addition to be rude all one billion of them want to kill us. And Europeans, being socialists, would love nothing more than to see the US come under the dictatorship that socialism leads to, just like all those dictatorships in Europe. And so what if Japan had a tsunami, they’re still rude!
Okay, that’s sarcasm. Actually Asian cultures are more “collective” rather than “individualistic” like America. In general Asians are more polite and considerate of others than Americans.

Posted on March 16, 2011 at 7:04amWatchtheOtherHand,
Certainly it is up to the universities themselves to determine what reflects poorly on their image–in this case I think it’s pretty clear. No one could reasonably make this case that this is an issue of academic freedom, as one could with some of the situations you describe. You mention when people’s faith is attacked. I don’t know if you had a particular example in mind, but this would be a dangerous road to go down, particularly for professors who want to be able to talk about extremist Islam without fear of being disciplined for denigrating the Muslim faith. That said, many universities do have a religious affiliation, and do protect at least that faith from denigration. As far as anti-Americanism–I suspect you and I have different definitions of what falls into that category.
Regarding the comparison with worker’s rights and private time activities, you could make the case that while an employee is not representing their workplace when they are not at work. However, you can’t say the same thing about a student at a university, certainly when they are actually attacking the student body of that university! If you were dumb enough to post a video on the web talking about how your boss is a fulfills all kinds of asian stereotypes, then you probably get what’s coming to you!
So, to reiterate, this moron has the legal right to say whatever she wants, but I do not think that it is a violation of Free Speech if the university takes disciplinary action.
