UK Human Rights Chair: Christians Asking for Religious Exemptions Is Like Muslims Pushing for Shariah Law

A human rights watchdog has a message for Christians: You must choose between following your religion and obeying the law. Trevor Phillips, the chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), a UK-based non-departmental public body that oversees human rights, took a strong stance against legal exemptions for religious groups during a recent debate in London.

According to Phillips, Christians who want to be exempt from legislation that seeks to ensure equality are similar to Muslims attempting to usher in shariah law. In particular, he was referencing Christian adoption agencies — many of whom wished to be exempt from working with same-sex families, despite laws requiring them to do so.

“You can‘t say because we decide we’re different then we need a different set of laws,” he said, while speaking at a recent debate that focused upon diverse societies. “To me there’s nothing different in principle with a Catholic adoption agency, or indeed Methodist adoption agency, saying the rules in our community are different and therefore the law shouldn’t apply to us. Why not then say shariah can be applied to different parts of the country? It doesn’t work.”

Phillips went on to say that churches and religious groups should be free to follow their own rules in the confines of their own environments. But once these institutions begin providing public services, he believes they must follow governmental rules.

“Once you start to provide public services that have to be run under public rules, for example child protection, then it has to go with public law,” he explained. “Institutions have to make a decision whether they want to do that or they don’t want to do that.”

The response, thus far, has been a furious one. Former Archbishop of Canterbury called the shariah law comparison “ridiculous” and urged lawmakers to find ways to “accommodate” the religious when new laws clash with their beliefs.

“We are a democracy in which Christianity is established in the Church of England and a nation profoundly influenced by this faith in its Catholic and Anglican heritage,” he said. “We need lawmakers to respect this heritage and seek accommodation wherever a strongly held faith seems to clash with new legislation.”

Others, too, saw Phillips’ comparison as problematic. Neil Addision, the director of the Thomas More Legal Centre, accused the EHRC of losing track of its original purpose.

“The EHRC is so obsessed with equality that it has lost sight of freedom,” Addison proclaimed. “It would prefer people not to do good, rather than to do good on their own terms.”

“These comments are deeply illiberal. They are intolerant,” added Andrea Williams, director of the Christian Legal Centre. ”Trevor Phillips fails to understand the nature of faith and what inspires faith and what makes agencies like Catholic adoption agencies so selfless.”

This debate comes in the wake of a decision earlier this month in which England’s high court found prayer before local council meetings to be unlawful (the Bideford town council plans to appeal). Additionally, last week Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, a Muslim who is also a British Cabinet member, maintained that Europe is being threatened by militant secularism.

In America, too, a major religious-freedom battle is unfolding between people of faith and the government, as the Obama administration has mandated insurance coverage of controversial contraceptives, sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs. This new regulation, which faith groups are battling against, forces churches to violate their consciences.

      He makes a valid point. Christians are asking for an exception on this is because they don’t want to be forced to do something against their faith. Muslims want sharia law because their faith tells them to do so.

      But there is a VERY important difference here that he fails to point out.

      Christians want this exception just for themselves and the institutions they fund and run while muslims want everyone to be ruled by sharia law. The former should be supported on the basis of freedom of religion while the latter should not.

      Islam is more than just a religion. It is a religious, political and military system all rolled into one and to treat it as JUST a religion is a mistake.

      Our constitution established the first government, and still the only government, in the history of the world, that does not permit the government to interview in anyone’s religious faith. Well, at least that is how it used to be before they removed the Freedom of Religion clause from our constitution by creating the law of Separation of Church and State.

      That being said, people from other countries cannot comprehend this. Not only that, but they have virtually outlawed all religion in Europe, except for Islam.

    I would say that if Christians don‘t want to be around it then they can just quit and go to another company where it isn’t, but then as soon as the gay community hears that there is a company where they are not getting on people’s nerves, then the gays will sue that company to hire a specific quota of gays.

    If people don’t realize there is a humongous, historical spiritual WAR going on, the “end is near”. Reread Ephesians 6. This is like David vs. Goliath & will determine America’s future, along with others. It will decide if God has mercy on us and helps us be restored or not.
    They will push everything – daring us to do something about it! Everyone complains about all the unconstitutional stuff being done & are appalled, outraged and yet not much is done.
    As Rush has pointed out, they can do anything they want that is unconstitutional and will continue UNLESS something, someone makes an issue of it and actually takes actions to STOP it! Most politicians are loathe to do this b/c they’re afraid of the MSM, re-election & are cowards when it comes to real fights based on principle. Their carreers come first.     However weird and leftest you may be, the Muslim beheadings, amputations and mummifying dress codes called for in Sharia law and enforced in countries like Saudi Arabia, are not equivalent to the exemptions for not paying for abortion, birth control and taxes the Church asks. Every Mosque is already entitled to exactly the same rights as the Church. If the Muslims demand to be exempted from paying for abortion, birth control and taxes, no one will say anything. That is a far cry from demanding a completely separate and autonomous legal system which, in great part, is contrary to and in violation of western common law…. When did the Church ask for that?

    Human rights is a scam used to usurp power through manipulation of language. Unless there are non-humans granting those rights to us humans, then the term makes no sense at all.

    The only right that needs protecting is Individual Liberty. Protect the rights of the individual and the rights of all are protected as well.

    Great Britain is in the throes of Islamic Jihad and may not survive as a bastion of Western Civilization. They are heavily dhimmified. They are unarmed and surrounded by a huge number of unassimilated muslims just waiting for the chance to engage in open and violent Jihad.     Even the Archbishop of Canterbury has surrendered his church and accepted the fact that aspects of Sharia will be injected in to British society. The Archbishop of Canterbury bows towards Mecca!

    These are the type of attacks that we need to bring before God, asking for His wisdom to know the best way to counter them. These attacks can be like a double end pitchfork. If the frontal attack fails they hope to get you with the other end. The wrong response to the first attack will effectively be a setup to be injured by the response we give. Republicans have sponsored and written the most heinous violations of our rights in recent times. The Patriot act, NDAA, etc.. They were written and put forth by republicans. Something to consider.       The synergy is temporary. In 1979 Iran, the left was on the same page with Islamists, thinking that once the Shah is gotten a rid of, it would be them who will b in charge. They did not know what awaits them. By 1982, about 26k of them (mainly commies) weren’t anymore due to sudden shortening of their bodies by about the head height.

      The left does not check the history, they think that they are ushering a new paradigm and the history does not apply to them. I am not that concerned about their eventual demise, but the problem is that the Islamists after they settle the score with former allies would usher centuries of darkness.

Once Christians are stripped of rights to practice their religion without govt. interference.,. Islam is in because the king has slyly exempted his people from rules and from prosecution via Holder, whilst acting like he has nothing to do with any of this. This is not about health care.. this is about the march of Islam under the guise of every other issue out there. It underlies all and if you look hard enough you will see the connection.
    Obama has one goal.. his eye is on the prize.. and he will do ANYTHING to succeed.

      The Equal Protection Clause is not being complied with when thousands of your equals are exempt from having it apply to them. THIS is the issue that needs addressing, NOT the issue of our First Amendment rights. — which IS BUT A DIVERSION from this REAL issue.

      Come on, people, we are smarter than this. Demand your representatives REPRESENT YOU in this Equal Protection argument, not rail on about First Amendment rights, which this guy is correctly stating will be used by the Muslim people to weasel sharia law into OUR SYSTEM under this present tact.

    See? This is what gay marriage is allllll about. Now they will force their lifestyle on all…force adoption agencies to help them, force the baker to bake for them, force the church to marry them, and it doesn’t stop.

    It was never about marriage, but closing down businesses and churches who disagree with the way they like sex.

    Bad example by the Chair. Sharia doesn’t even figure here. Let’s be more even handed. Forcing the Christian group to accept same sex marriages should be equated with forcing Islam to accept same sex marriages. Okay, now let’s see how that works.

    Tired of arguments equating apples and oranges.

    Isn’t the hatred against Muslims so strong these days? I mean they should be aloud to- oh wait… its against Christians… Nevermind! False alarm everyone! Phew, for a second there, I thought he was gonna push through with the whole “equality” thing.

      Let’s change religion to a set of beliefs.

      Why should your gay beliefs trump my moral beliefs? We both should have freedom and not force our will on each other. Gays are forcing their beliefs on others.
