UK Mother Told She Couldnt Breastfeed to Avoid Offending Muslims

A U.K. woman said she was told to leave a community center after she tried to breastfeed her five-month-old son, out of concern that she would offend Muslim visitors.

According to the Daily Mail, a receptionist told Emma Mitchell the center was a “multicultural building” and suggested she continue in the privacy of a restroom. After Mitchell argued, a manager permitted her to use an empty room under supervision.

“She said ‘Oh no, we don’t allow that in here. We‘ve had that many complaints that we don’t allow it.’”

“I told her my son was hungry and I didn’t want to have to go away and come back.”

According to Ms. Mitchell a manager then said “You absolutely can’t do that here.”

Despite being offered the empty room, Mitchell said she was so upset that she had to leave to continue the feeding in her car.

“If someone from another culture started praying in the waiting room, I wouldn’t say, ‘Excuse me, you‘re offending me’ I would respect it because it’s their culture.

“So I shouldn‘t be made to feel what I wanted to do was wrong just because it’s not in their culture.

Afterward, local councilman Shoab Akhtar issued a statement defending the incident, saying despite the center’s support for breastfeeding, it does not have the proper facilities for doing so. Later that same day, he issued a second statement to “unreservedly apologize” for Mitchell’s treatment.

“[S]taff are now aware that they should make every reasonable effort to assist a mother’s need to breastfeed – whether she requests the use of a private room or otherwise,” Akhtar said.

    Muslims just plain old offend me. See what you’ve done Europe. Diversity does not work. Not being racist but combining to many cultures and you will have clashes of different opinions. Now notice that the place catered to the muslim and not the citizen. Could you imagine that a 100 years ago? Slowly but surely Europe will be a muslim area. 20 years and a whole new generation will be in power. That’s the master plan. They have 6 kids to our 1 or 2. It adds up fast. Look at South Florida.       Indeed, many Countries and their Political Leaders have spoken out publically stating that Multiculturalism does not work. Has not worked and will not work in their Countries.

      I can attest to this as well since I work in Cesspool Central, aka WashDC. There are thee DC politicians who are being investigated for corruption, one othem is the Mayor. This breastfeeding issue has raised its ugly head here as well and it started out as the Mother’s fault. But this same government will be first one to take the child away from the Mother if she “neglects” him by not providing proper nourishment.

    I dont know about “Muslim” but I do think that should be done in a Private area, nor do I think it is unreasonable for a owner, or agent of the owner to ask a GUEST on the owner’s property to stop preforming unwanted activities. If they would have given any other reason most people here would have on the side of the center but because there is a Muslim connection you side with the women.

    Property owners have the right to limit what activities occur on the property, unless of course your against property rights?

      I disagree with your statements. No one should be forced into a “private” room for feeding their child. I don think that they should cover themselves up though and maintain a certain level of modesty. Why should anyone force a family to split up just so that the youngest in the family can eat. Also, policies like you would have us follow would cost businesses more money and would mess up the routines of child and parent.

      If it’s legal to breast feed in public then yes i support the woman.Public spaces do not have to accomodate religious sensibilities of any religion.The woman should not have been told to not breast feed. Seeing 2 men kiss in public feels bizarre to me yet since it‘s legal it’s my problem not theirs.Breast feeding in western countries[as oppossed to third world countries where it's rampant-even muslim countries], ar first felt bizarre [a consrivance or affectation mimicking primitive cultures] to me ,but now i have gotten used to it.Times change and our culture has changed.     I’m sorry, while I don‘t mind the sight of a woman breastfeeding her child I also don’t think it any great burden to expect her to do it somewhere more private if some DO object. Just because Muslims are fascists doesn’t mean everything they might object to is a silly objection.

    The idea that people can’t be imposed upon to be a little discreet is as offensive as Muslims wanting to shove their disgusting culture in my face. What bothers me is if it is only a Muslim’s objection trhat would prompt this action.

      Most women who breastfeed in public are very discreet.

      However, I think to be very offended by breastfeeding is a little freudian.
      To be offended by breastfeeding is to find a sexual component to a very non-sexual act.

      Breasts are for feeding babies–as they are for all mammals.
      To consider them only as sexual objects is quite unhealthy mentally.

    The mosque at World Trade Center is supposedly going to be centered around being ‘multicultural’ also, but I‘m sure will usher you quickly outside to feed your children breastfeeding mom’s.       Does my avatar LOOK muslim? When I was growing up mothers did not make a habbit of breastfeeding in public. If they had to they found a place inconspicuous.

      It was a less in your face age.

    In the United States many states have enacted laws to protect a woman’s right to breastfeed in any place, public or private, as long as she’s authorized to be there. Some states have laws so strict that asking a nursing mother to stop, cover up, or move elsewhere is a violation of her civil rights and gives her grounds to sue for damages in a court of law. In the UK, since 1975 Sexual Discrimination Act –mothers who breastfeed their children, can do so freely in public places such as restaurants, cafes, surgeries, libraries etc. up to the childs 6th month.

      Another non story from the Blaze. Some officious idiot stops a woman breastfeeding, blames a group who may be offended (insert name as appropriate here) and the Daily Mail runs the story. Where‘s the real story that’s dominated the headlines for the last 2 weeks – the News International criminal gang’s activities? Phone hacking or breast feeding? Oh, still under Murdoch’s thumb Blaze – bet you delete this post pretty quick as well.

      So the FBI are wasting their time today investigating whether News International hacked into the phones of 9/11 victims? – Just for your info it was Gordon Brown whose phone was hacked – not Cameron, he employed one of the crooks.

    The Muslims have destroyed what once was a great and powerful nation. Britannia once ruled half the world, Now they are a shell of their former self gutless and compliant. Soon whites will be the oppressed minority in their own country because the British are not having enough children to maintain their culture , But the Muslims are breeding like rabbits having over 8 children per household and getting public assistance to raise them as well !!!

      There is no reason a mother should be ashamed of doing the best thing she can do for her baby–breastfeed them.
      I have never seen a woman who was breastfeeding in public who wasn’t extremely discreet.
      Breasts are for feeding babies–to see them as only sexual is a mental disorder.
