UK Pundit to Shocked TV Host: Suffering Children Should Be Smothered

Advice columnists in Britain are known as “agony aunts” (or uncles).  Virginia Ironside is one.  Her latest bit of advice has drawn outraged reaction from television viewers who caught her comments on the BBC yesterday.  She appeared during a segment called, “Can abortion be a kindness?” Here’s the Daily Mail account of her comments:

Miss Ironside said: ‘If a baby’s going to be born severely disabled or totally unwanted, surely an abortion is the act of a loving mother.’
She added: ‘If I were the mother of a suffering child – I mean a deeply suffering child – I would be the first to want to put a pillow over its face… If it was a child I really loved, who was in agony, I think any good mother would.’

Disability rights advocates called her pro-eugenics approach “despicable.”  Even the host seemed stunned:

Programme host Susanna Reid appeared visibly shocked by her comments during the live debate, gasping: ‘That’s a pretty horrifying thing to say, that you would put a pillow over a suffering child.’

In the past, Ironside has said she believes doctors should not try to save the lives of “very premature babies.”

    This has nothing to do with “compassion” and everything to do with “the greater good” and “social responsibility”. Perhaps those who subscribe to her ideology sterilize themselves for the “greater good”so as to prevent the possibility of having a less than perfect child.

    I have often wondered why an all-loving God would send floods and the like to punish his children- and then I read/hear about the Ironsides of the world. Then I wonder why He doesn’t lose his patience and flush the whole thing and start over. Perhaps he has more compassion than those that would destroy an innocent life.

    This should not be surprising. This is what Eugenicists/Progressives have believed for almost 100 years.
    Its why Obama, as a Senator, had no problem voting for a bill that allows late-term aborted babies to be taken somewhere quiet to die rather than trying to keep them alive.

      The progressives are not satisfied that abortion is enough, now they want to extend it to very sick children. This is just how the abortion issue started….someone makes a comment here, a comment there about the poor girl who got herself pregnant. The poor girl (in most cases) made the choice to have sex knowing that sex can cause a pregnancy. People need to be taught to think with their brains and NOT just go around killing innocent babies and children because their mommies don’t want them. ((((((((((((SCREAM))))))))))))))))

      Anyone remember Ruby Ridge? Randy weaver He lost most of his his family they were murdered by the ATF and FBI and even killed their dog. And it was all over a unregistered shot gun…They didn’t like his political views and life style and thought that he was a threat to their polices. Like some one said progressives will do what ever it takes to be in power and control.     Virginia Ironside, you just smothered Christ. “Whatever you did unto these least of these, you did it to me.” Oh, and there’s that other one too: “Whosoever hurts one of these little ones, it were better for him that a millstone were put around his neck and he were sunk in the depths of the sea.” As a father who never had a chance to comfort his suffering child–my child was stillborn–I find it very hard to have compassion for you. But I pray that God will.

      My wife was amazed by this. She said “Every mother THINKS about it at times. The problem is that this is a “permanent solution” to use a well-worn phrase.

      It just goes to show Glenn Beck is right about the progressive movement and eugenics. They started the movement, they still back abortion, and they still believe in killing babies that aren’t “viable”. The problem your definition of “a life worth living” is completely different from mine – or the baby’s opinion, for that matter.

      Ironside said aloud what all other eugenics advocates believe. It’s OK though – we’re only talking about the physically and mentally deformed though, not the Jews. Unfortunately these people are unable to make the connection between eugenics and the holocaust.

      I can not begin to fathom how someone could be so cold hearted. I watched a movie recently called “Follow the Stars Home” amazing and far closer to how “any good Mother” would feel.

      Being a Mother is not an easy job, it is one of love and patience. Being the Mother of a disabled child is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. We should all remember that life is worth it. Children what ever package they come in are gifts from our Fahter in Heaven. He shares them with us for a short time and we are blessed to be part of the lives He gives us.

      I have to say I do not agree with hurting children and could never do so myself, but after working in the medical field and witnessing true suffering with no possibility of relief, death is sometimes a blessing. I am as anti-abortion as anyone, but usually the people speaking out the loudest to preserve life at all costs are the ones who place their loved ones in nursing homes and never visit. There is always the hope of a miracle, but those hopes even in the most faithful usually go unanswered. Love isn’t always about holding on, sometimes it’s about letting go.

      No one wants to prolong suffering. We treat disease and illness, and when it is terminal, we treat the pain to ease the suffering, but we do not hasten death. This is why removing life support is not immoral. It is very different thing than hastening death, or suffocating an infant with a pillow. Didn’t these kinds of issues used to be common sense? Medical ethics? Business ethics? Poltical ethics? Do our schools of “higher learning” even teach these things anymore?
