UK ‘You’ve Lost Mate’: Driver Tackles Carjacker at 80mph After Clinging Onto Speeding Vehicle

UK Driver Tackles Carjacker at 80mph After Clinging Onto Speeding Vehicle | Barry Monaghan

HORNCHURCH, England — A 60-year-old British carjacking victim clung onto the trunk of his vehicle while it was being driven away at 80mph (129kph) before climbing inside to tackle the thief.

Grandfather Barry Monaghan was loading bouquets of flowers into his car in Hornchurch, about 20 miles (32 km) east of London, when a thief grabbed his keys out of his hands and jumped into the driver’s seat.

Unwilling to give up his purple Ford Mondeo, the former firefighter clung on to the open trunk of his car as the thief dragged him around country lanes at speeds of up to 80mph (129kph), the East London Advertiser reported.

The thief even clipped an oncoming bus in his bid to shake off Monaghan — but his unwanted passenger would not give up.

Monaghan managed to haul himself inside the trunk of the car and push through the back seats before putting the persistent thief in a chokehold.

“I had my hands round the guy’s neck, and I told him, ‘I’m not letting go,’” Monaghan said. “I kept saying to him, ‘You’ve lost, mate. Give up,’ but he kept swerving into the other side of the road trying to loosen my grip. I was being knocked about all over the place and watching the speedometer hit 80mph.”

The pair grappled for miles before the carjacker gave up at Ockendon train station in Thurrock, where he ran off.

Monaghan, who suffered whiplash and cuts and bruises, added, “I was frightened out of my life, but there was no way I was giving up. The guy kept threatening to smash the car, but in the end, he realized he was beaten.”

Local police were investigating the incident.

Too bad he didn‘t have a better grip on the guy’s neck when they finally stopped. Much easier for the cops to apprehend an unconscious suspect, avoids all that bothersome chasing and investigating.

Good thing that every urban area in the UK has CCTV cameras every 10 or 12 feet, should be a no brainer to pick the perp up, that’s why the cameras are there, right?

That being said, risking your life for a Ford Mondeo is not a great trade although the value of car obviously wasn’t the point, however the “easy access trunk” gets new legs as a Mondeo selling feature.

Barry will be put under house arrest & wear an ankle monitor. Their EPA/& other duplicate departments investigating, under the Commerce-Clause Law, transporting bouquets of flowers & intent either to sell them without securing a “flower-license”or taking the flowers over the border & selling them to foreign gardners for their own gardens.Soil contamination due to the native flowers being taken to foreign soil. Or, investigation shows that his Grt.Grt. grandpa had mutiple wives & securing “to save the country” that you will never be able to run for office…those are 2 strikes & the 3rd strike was……..WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Really, me, I’d let the guy drive-off. My life is worth more than a vehicle. However, if my child was in the car, I would become a MAMA BEAR and he picked the wrong vehicle to steal..LOL

Watch and see if Monaghan isn’t charged. While I admire his tenacity, the great minds of Europe generally echo the thoughts of that august body, the U.N. And according to the U.N. and the U.K., you do not have right to self-defense. In Monaghan’s case, he did not retreat and attacked the thief. I’d like more detail on the thief, also.
Please, follow this at The Blaze. I‘m curious to see if my prediction pans out and I’m also curious who the thief is. This man‘s act of assertiveness will likely be deemed more dangerous and reprehensible than the thief’s attempt.

No doubt he will be charged for assault on the carjacker and will end up with more jail time than the carjacker. This is the place that charged people for putting a unsafe mess screen on a window as it will cut someone who is trying to break in though it.

      TJexcite,
If that’s true, I’d appreciate a link. My favorite idiocy is the U.K. considering the banning of pint glasses for safety’s sake. This was done with absolutely no research or supporting evidence there was EVER a problem with people drinking from a glass as opposed to a state-approved (sippy) cup.
      http://www.loweringthebar.net/2009/09/british-government-considers-mandating-plastic-pints.html
I’m not sure how this was resolved. I can’t find any link that states what the outcome to this idiotic consideration was.
