Umpire Ejects Baseball Team DJ for Playing ‘Three Blind Mice’

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (The Blaze/AP) — The music stopped at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach after a minor league umpire ejected the music DJ for playing “Three Blind Mice” during the game.

The ejection came in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game between the Daytona Cubs and the Fort Myers Miracle.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/NLccRv ) reports Cubs manager Brian Harper was arguing a call at first base when he heard home plate umpire Mario Seneca bellow “you’re out.”

Harper says he thought he was being kicked out of the game. Instead, the umpire ejected the music man, intern Derek Dye.

The public address system at the stadium was shut down for the rest of the game. The newspaper reports fans took it upon themselves to announce players as they approached the plate. And the Cubs said as much on their Facebook page:

We’ve just entered the twilight zone at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Our music man, Derek Dye, has been EJECTED from tonight’s game. The umpire, Mario Seneca, was apparently not happy when Derek played “Three Blind Mice” after a questionable call. With no music system, a fan has stepped up to call out player introductions from the stands.

BaseballAmerica.com points out that Dye isn’t the first PA worker to get thrown out of a game. Organist Lambert Bartak was thrown out of a minor league game in 1988 for playing the theme song to the “Mickey Mouse Club.” And in 1985, another organist named Wilbur Snapp was thrown out of a game for also playing “Three Blind Mice.”

By the way, the Cubs won Wednesday’s game 2-1.

I guess “blind mice” have very acute hearing, and fragile egos?

A few years back a ref working an Iowa State basketball game threatened to throw out the radio broacasters, telling them to “move on” from talking about him ejecting Iowa State’s coach. Apparently he over heard them as he was passing where they sit at courtside. Don’t these guys know they just make the situations worse and end up looking foolish?

Umpire baiting is a revered tradition of the game.

If blue can’t stand the heat, then maybe he should get out from behind the plate (mixed metaphor, I know – but you get the idea).

I have umpired kids through college ball and never worried about anything off the field unless it directly affected the game on the field. I would have found it hilarious if I had been umpiring. I probably would have used a bat as a “seeing eye cane”. There are too many umpires with “radar” ears. It sure sounds like this guy needs to find a new (a)vocation.

I guess umpires must be liberals-they can’t stand someone questioning their authority!

“Three bling mice” The umpire at home plate probably felt left out. Why should the umps at 1st, 2nd and 3rd get all the glory?

I would have done the same thing. PA guy announces names and postions. Anything else and he has gone to far and can be tossed. I umpired college and high school for 25 years. I recall tossing the PA guy once for being a cheerleader over the PA for the home team. Gave him one warning, and he kept on. Finally tossed him. No more PA guy.

I hate instant replay calls in sports… I like the human element… right or wrong. Just think if this were taken out of the equation! You wouldn’t have had such a laugh at a miserable excuse for an umpire. LOL!

While playing high school ball I have hummed that tune before after a bad call. I can’t stop laughing! That’s how funny I find this.

How can you be thrown out of a game that you aren’t in? I’m sure Congress will have hearings and spend a few million of our dollars to get to the bottom of this.

I can remember when the Chicago Cubs had an organist. They would play “Three Blind Mice” and that was more years ago than I care to admit to.

GROW UP!!! It’s minor league ball not little league. If they can’t take that how are they going to take the booing at a New York stinking City ballgame?

i think its hillarious, but i wouldn’t put it past the minor league team to set this up with the ump knowing ahead of time to throw the guy out.
minor league teams do stupid PR stunts all the time.
