UN Agency Grants Palestine Full Membership

PARIS (The Blaze/AP) — Palestine became a full member of the U.N. cultural and educational agency Monday, in a highly divisive move that the United States and other opponents say could harm renewed Mideast peace efforts.

UNESCO Gives Palestine Full Membership

U.S. lawmakers had threatened to withhold roughly $80 million in annual funding to UNESCO if it approved Palestinian membership. The United States provides about 22 percent of UNESCO’s funding. The New York Post reports:

Two laws passed by the US in the 1990s ban the financing of any UN organization that accepts Palestine as a full member. That means UNESCO stands to lose…22 percent of its annual budget.

Before the vote, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, “We’ve made the point that there are very clear red lines in US legislation and that if those are crossed in UNESCO, that the legislation is triggered.”

Huge cheers went up in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization after delegates approved the membership in a vote of 107-14 with 52 abstentions. Eighty-one votes were needed for approval in a hall with 173 UNESCO member delegations present. Watch the announcement of approval, below:

The US, Canada, Germany and Israel were among those who voted against the Palestinian bid. Russia, China and France voted in favor. The UK was among the countries who abstained.

UNESCO Gives Palestine Full Membership“Long Live Palestine!” shouted one delegate, in French, at the unusually tense and dramatic meeting of UNESCO’s General Conference.

While the vote has large symbolic meaning, the issue of borders of an eventual Palestinian state, security troubles and other disputes that have thwarted Middle East peace for decades remain unresolved.

Palestinian officials are seeking full membership in the United Nations, but that effort is still under examination and the U.S. has said it will veto it unless there is a peace deal with Israel. Given that, the Palestinians separately sought membership at Paris-based UNESCO and other U.N. bodies.

Monday’s vote is definitive. The membership formally takes effect when Palestine signs UNESCO’s founding charter.

UNESCO Gives Palestine Full MembershipThe U.S. ambassador to UNESCO, David Killion, said Monday’s vote will “complicate” U.S. efforts to support the agency. The United States voted against the measure.

Israel’s ambassador to UNESCO, Nimrod Barkan, called the vote a tragedy.

“UNESCO deals in science, not science fiction,” he said. “They forced on UNESCO a political subject out of its competence.”

“They’ve forced a drastic cut in contributions to the organization,” he said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton last week called UNESCO’s deliberation “inexplicable,” saying discussion of Palestinian membership in international organizations couldn’t replace negotiations with Israel as a fast-track toward Palestinian independence.

Financial and military aid (if asked for) for Israel, YES…but the rest of the ME can go straight to hell as far as I’m concerned. How can one read about ‘Plan Dalet’ and not be disgusted about those who implemented this plan? How does one come to grips with a nation that lives by the same principles as those once practiced by the Third Reich.
      Zionist Israel seeks to be an ethnically pure state. How is that different than Germany once seeking its ethnically pure state? Israel, created by Jews from America, Poland and Russia, has created ghettos for its indigenous population of Palestinians. Israel, like the Reich, is walling in these ghettos.       Nothing clean about it. After several U.N. organizations admit the Palestinians in full, they will use that as the basis for full U.N. membership.

      Congress recognized this 15 years ago in the 1990s, so you would appear to be purposely obtuse.

    Just another example of where Obama’s lack of a focused foreign policy has led us. Mistreating our allies, not standing firm against those who do not wish us well and being consistently inconsistent doing both has created a feeling that in the world there is no adult in the room. And the “bad” kids are taking over . The UN has also lost its focus. It is now a gang of countries with mixed values and disparate goals which have become so at odds that it can not ensure peace .

      You call yourself a progressive, but you can’t even realize that the word is a slang word for communist. Communism has proven itself to be a failure. Insanity is when someone keeps doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome. You by definition are insane.

Thin skinned hypocrites!!And peace could be had in an instand if israel would go back to it’s legal 1948borders. even hamas has said so. you don’t want peace-your “honor” is more important then peace for israeli citizens.[You won't give an inch of land to prove that you were right to seize more land in the 67 war. In spite of the fact that it is illigal to do so]. Stubborn to the point of prefering insecurity for your citizens then peace.Who doesn’t value human life? And you say those muslims are fanatics!

      Rose Should we give Texas back to Mexico? Should all white europeans leave the US and return the land to the Indians? Should Florida be returne to the French? How far back should we go? Should we rebuild the Roman Empire? How many seized Christian properties should be taken back from Muslims? What is your solution? You can’t just focus on Israel and Palentine.

    We started the UN as the league of nations to exert power in the world after WWI. Dumb idea!!! But we screwed up a lot of things after WWI. Read W.Wilson. We need to fix this mistake. Pull out of the UN and send them packing to Europe, Scandinavia or wherever. This is no longer an organization that has human rights and freedom on the planet as it’s agenda.

    While I believe we should belong to the United Nations, and any of it’s subsidiary organizations, I do not believe we should be funding “anything” that is fundamentally in opposition to equality, justice, and peace. Due to the current state of affairs in admitting terrorist states, and funding terrorist states, I don’t think we should be giving the UN any funding at all. Let the other folks pay for it, even to the point of getting it off of our shores.
