UN Sec Gen Calls for ‘Revolution’: World Economic System Is ‘Global Suicide Pact’

He doesn’t indict “capitalism” by name, but it’s clear that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon is no fan of the Western approach to economic developement. Here’s The Guardian:

The world’s current economic model is an environmental “global suicide pact” that will result in disaster if it isn’t reformed, Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, warned today.

Ban said that political and business leaders need to embrace economic innovation in order to save the planet.

“We need a revolution,” he told a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on how best to make the global economy sustainable. “Climate change is also showing us that the old model is more than obsolete.”

He called the current economic model a recipe for “national disaster” and said: “We are running out of time. Time to tackle climate change, time to ensure sustainable … growth.” The Guardian revealed yesterday that Ban is ending his hands-on efforts to reach a global climate deal through UN negotiations, and move to focus on a broader sustainability agenda.

(h/t The SPPI Blog)

At least some of the other panelists expressed some reservations:

His words received a mixed reception from other panelists, including Felipe Calderón, Mexico’s president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia’s president, Walmart chief executive, Mike Duke, and Microsoft’s Bill Gates.

Jim Balsillie, co-chief executive of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, said technology alone wouldn’t solve the problem of how to sustain economic growth while reducing its impact on the environment. “We have to fundamentally rethink economics,” he said, suggesting that a new model was needed to hold businesses to account for their impact on the planet.

Yudhoyono, whose country is often labeled a keeper of one of the world’s last major rainforests, said Indonesia was trying to plant 1bn trees a year. But he pushed back against the suggestion that developing countries should give up on their aspiration to achieve the same level of wealth as the rich world.

This view was partly shared by Gates, who said that “you cannot have a just world by telling people to use less energy than the average European”.

The majority of the populace is just so stupid… I was railing about Obama far before the elections. Look at his Change posters you fools I’d say, the young generation has no idea what socialism is and if you try to explain it to them ‘well that sounds like a good deal for all’ is the response. Ban Ki-Moon wants sustainable economic growth. How is that to happen without increasing production which means increasing consumption of resources? More factories means more CO2 in the atmosphere, right? Kinda defeats the ‘climate change’ argument he’s trying to discuss.

Actually, what he really means is a massive transfer of wealth from the West to the Third World, either through UN-managed direct payments or some kind of global tax based on carbon output.

This joker hasn’t figured out that his climate change con game is pretty much dead as a money maker.

Actually an economic system which is totally capitalist is not a reality – even in the US we actually have a mixture of capitalism and socialism. There is a lot of socialism involved in our current system – the police, the fire department, are just two examples. I don’t know of any country that is totally build on capitalism. http://wp.me/pYLB7-yl

      WALKWITHME,

You are correct. However, the LEVEL of SOCIALISM in this country has grown constantly, especially since 1865. It is a very neccessary function of Government to do in Society, that which Individual Citizens cannot. BUT, as the Constitution Originally laid it out, that would be, Deliver the Mail, Defend the Coast, and Coin the Money. NOTHING MORE.
No Government has any business in providing Food, Housing, Education, Medical Care nor Retirement Benefits to ANYONE, and certainly not financed by theft at gunpoint from those that produce the wealth to pay for it.
The United States of America is now, and has been, a fully formed Socialist Nanny/Police State. The last question now to be answered, in this the Second Civil War, is whether or not we continue on, to Full Blown Communism. Men with Rifles will make this final determination, it won’t be Politicians and Do Gooders, debating in the Public Forum.

And while they are at it, they can take their UN building and uproot it to, say, VENEZUELA. They, and their dictatorial leader Hugo Chavez would certainly greet the Anti-Capitalists with open arms. As for the United States, we would get along just fine without them. Let’s pull out of the UN, evict them from our property, and let them move ahead with thier plans for global economic reform. The surest way to be rid of the UN for good is to allow them to self destruct and take the rest of it’s remaining members down with it.

That know that the feces is going to hit the rotary ocsillator in a very short period of time. Be prepared, this will not be like any past collapse of the money system. Never has the worlds entire system collapsed. The new gold will probably be food and bullets. This will be bad- very bad.

If global warming is real, then the capitalist system is the only real hope because it is what creates all the new technology, much of which will eventually be clean energy (because, believe it or not, it will eventually be cheaper to generate than oil or coal).

Agreed the UN is made up of Marxist‘s and Globalist’s , when they speak of things not being sustainable they mean there are to many people living on the planet and most of them have to go. The economic argument is solely based on a Marxist Ideology anti capitalist, the environmental argument is a vehicle on which to achieve it hence the name water melons red on the inside green on the outside. Gates believes the west should have it’s industrial infrastructure demolished, it’s economy destroyed , lower the living standards to a third world level. They are not going to elevate the third world and at the same time lower ours, they are going to just lower our standard of living and with luck vaccinate as many people as they can to control the birth rates world wide under the guise of flu pandemics and assorted other pandemics and outbreaks which are actually released by the same creeps that want to give you and your family a shot. Marxism is a political and scientific ideology where people are like cattle , have no rights and are property of the state to be used and misused as the state deems necessary, Communist’s believe that the only way it can really work is by taking over the world and controlling it and the best way to do this (they now think) is to scare people into supporting their sky is falling scam “ climate change” no longer can their political arguments or slogans like workers of the world unite ! bring people in to support their movement so their trying the environmental angle which is still alive and kicking despite of it’s recent setbacks. Don’t think for one moment that the Global elite plan on cutting back their own life styles and energy consumption only ours. So if there are real shortages in the world we will be the only ones who will be denied that is if most of us are still around if they are successful in efforts.

We can’t withdraw from the UN. We need to give Obama the boot, and remain in the UN to veto its Marxist-Islamist agenda.

True, right now Obama, the lamebrain chosen by the powers that be to radicalize America and trigger radicalization worldwide, has started to place America under the judicial system of the UN. For example, he joined the Human Rights Council, whose current primary role is to promote and protect the Islamization of Europe, and weaken Israel.

The title of this article is misleading. Prior to Ban’s appointment the UN Secretariat had been far left, but Ban is a South Korean and he is from the political center where some people are for climate change. Because Ban is genuinely convinced that climate change is man-made and needs to be addressed, he is susceptible to manipulation by the Marxist-Greens. Nevertheless, the Blaze has erroneously painted Ban as a far-left ideologue, which he is not. @Susan, It happens with Swiss banks as well. Where are the numbered few who enter politics and do not lose their soul?

If we withdraw from the UN, we will have no sway over radical resolutions coming out of the UN. Our real problem is Obama, not the UN. We can’t veto the radical resolutions, if we have an intrusion of red roaches in our own WH. If we don’t get rid of Obama by 2012 (by that I mean BEFORE he can shut down our system of government completely), our fate in the hands of commies and Islamists will be sealed forever. I am not trying to be dramatic. It is THAT consequential. America’s window of opportunity is closing fast.

Agree 100% Rightpolitically, The problem with us getting out of the U.N. is it involves Washington politicians who are intertwined financially with some of these corrupt pieces of debris voting for it. You rarely find a dictator or leader in control that does not have some financial ties to Washington and the politicians who have allowed it. Clinton gives China ‘Most Favored Nation Status’ and sells them 600 super computers advancing their military decades (that the Pentagon vetoed) and now we have a country that is gearing up militarily and challenging us on our very capitalist foundation…All the while owning a huge amount of U.S. debt financed by the average U.S. consumer. Barney Frank allows China to trade out their U.S. dollars out of the IMF for gold before the devaluation of the dollar started and it goes largely unreported and he is re-elected. The corruption is so deep and far reaching on both sides of the isle that our Republic is likely in a losing battle unless someone can come to the forefront very soon with an honest message and follow through with it. Of course they will be torn to ribbons by the progressive media before they get elected. Now look at the current generation of youth and those coming of age, does anyone think most of them would be even capable of mounting a serious offensive if or when China decides to help “stabilize” the world? And make no mistake they still believe in Mao’s mantra of “All power is derived from the barrel of a gun”. With their sheer numbers alone, we would likely be doomed. Our advantage used to be largely technological and they have exploited that through corrupt politicians and the ease the spies seem to have penetrating our intelligence network. If one did not know better, they would think some of these politicians are complicit in the effort!

      @ Snowleopard
I hope your wrong. I think one of the first things we need after 2012 is to tell the UN to go find their own home and get out of ours. I have yet to find anyone that can effectively argue socialism as a better option to capitolism and effectively argue how a representative democracy is wrong for the people.

As I see it the UN only serves as a place for all the countries to get together and complain about the USA and all the evil things we have done. All I have read on the UN is this country complaining about how unfair life is to their people or how it is someone elses fault that they are failing both economically and politically. All this whiny cry baby bs reminds me of a line I heard on a TV show. Being the scifi nerd I am I heard this line on Babylon 5. I find great comfort in this idea:

“You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn’t it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe.”

So as I see it let life be unfair and be happy. LMAO

Ok, while in principle I agree that the UN is nothing but trouble for our way of life, I’m slowly starting to understand, to certain degree, that it is our way of life that is slowly becoming the problem. I know this is an unpopular view, however please bear with me for one moment.

First, I’d like to say that I am a lover of America and the constitution. I love freedom and capitalism, BUT (yes there is a but) even I can see the limitations of a truly “free” market. Remember the golden rule: whoever has the gold makes the rules. That’s more true today than ever. Consider our present situation… These global elitist that everyone hates so much have made their fortunes off the backs of the common man and then they turn around and use that fortune to bite the hand that feeds them (some might say Mr. Bill Gates & the others for example). In a free market this will always be a potential problem. James Madison said “Wherever there is interest and power to do wrong, wrong will generally be done.” — How very insightful.

The truth of the matter is that there will always be those who exploit the system, accumulate great power and wealth, and use that wealth to rule over and further abuse the common people which make it all possible. The only way out of this, in my opinion, is to strike some sort of balance between capitalism and the basic needs of the people. I do not claim to have the solution to this, I am mostly just putting some thoughts our there hoping to bounce ideas off of anyone who happens to be reading this. I noticed a lot of whining/complaining in messages on the blaze, when are people going to devote some energy into genuinely trying to solve the problems? Let‘s get out of the ’great ideas’ phase that we all seem to have and move toward practical application of said ideas. What can we *really* do to make the whole world a better place?

Another touchy subject – population. I am for a free world where people can procreate as they wish. I think abortion is horrid and should never be used as any type of birth control. But even with my conservative views on these subjects, again I can see that unchecked population growth can, and likely will, eventually reach a critical mass of sorts. I believe it is true that with modern technology we can easily feed a world with twice or more the current population. However, it must be taken into consideration that even if the resources of Earth can naturally regenerate, the population will eventually reach a point where we consume resources faster than we can produce them or renew them. Some are arguing we’ve already hit that point. Regardless, simple numbers will show that this could eventually become a major problem, if not today sometime in the future. Are we going to keep pushing off what we can solve today to future generations? Why not solve the problems now, now that technology is becoming available to do so?

Just as one example, really think about this…. Imagine the world like where there is an exploding population and a car for every household. Before long the Earth will be plastered with highways & billboards (much more so than now) and unmanageable traffic. Even being a completely free society — is that, a world immersed in billboard hell (trying visiting Houston some time) what we really what? Unlimited highways, traffic, billboards, houses of il repute, and so on popping up all over the place? Have we come so far that indeed “anything goes”?? Another example. I am not a tree hugger but just think about this… Even if we technically have the ‘space’ to expand, do we really want to chop down trees in proportion to infinite population growth to make space for more mega cities? Before long the earth *will* lose it’s natural beauty, at least in some parts of the world. I’m not trying to make a case to save the trees, I”m just asking you all to think forward a 100 or 200 years and imagine how the world might look if some sort of system is not put in place to slow this down. I think freedom is very important but I think a future world with unrestrained growth will be, at best, a very chaotic place. Do you all expect me to believe that the generation that put people on the moon can not figure out how to create a system of abundance for all? IMO, we’ve had our heads in our bums for far too long and thats why the system has become what it is. It is a product of ourselves, whether we want to admit it or not.

That being said, I didn’t even mention obvious religious and other potential differences which always seem to be a problem. So the big question is, how do we address these very unpopular topics while maintaining freedom for all? Perhaps a well managed hybrid between capitalism and socialism. Where the representatives are duly elected, absolutely NO dictators — sorry, no ruling by decree or ‘executive powers’, such nonsense must go. A system where freedom of expression, religion, and movement are still priority, however to the extent that all in the system are cared for first. This will not necessarily mean a car for every person, just the means to move around freely and expand our minds, not our bellies.

With all of this said, I am strongly opposed to any form of restraint on thought, expression, religion, right to bear arms – anything that does not infringe directly upon the rights of others. You do not have the right to not be offended, so I do not personally imagine a PC world where you can’t call a spade a spade. Truth and love (charity) towards all should be, IMO, our highest goal. I think people should still be allowed to own property — perhaps what they can themselves build they can keep (that which is a product of your own works, your own mind). I think privacy in this new world is a huge concern. I am strongly opposed to the government taking biometric data, for example, for identification. They do not need my blood or iris scan, ever. Red light cameras are already getting ridiculous enough, last thing we need is more monitoring.

In summary, some might call what I am describing a ‘New World Order’. I am not actually opposed to “a” new world order, but I am opposed to a new world order where those making the rules live to a higher standard off the backs of everyone else. I think it would be amazing to freely travel the world — why wouldn’t we wanted a united world? But let’s preserve our world so there is something to travel and see! Are we so primitive that we can not think BIG to free a planet instead of just a nation? I think we can do this but again I think it will ultimately require striking a balance between personal liberty (for example, car ownership) and caring for others. I see no reason for anyone to ever be homeless or go to bed hungry when the world is capable of producing so much. The fact that a single person on this planet dies of starvation means we’re not doing enough. So the question is propose to anyone reading this, is what do we do about it?

(I think it would be awesome if we could flush this subject out a little bit and see what kind of conclusions we can reach)

We have got to realize what is going on!!! They aren’t stupid or insane, they are quite calculating. The UN is a tool of very powerful international interests that want to weaken the US and its influence by continually assaulting its sovereignty. This will more easily allow the establishment of a global governance. A powerful vessel to accomplish this is “man-made global warming“ and other ”save the planet” garbage science used to deceive many into relinquishing their liberties and justify the raising of taxes (essentially mafia-like protection money). It is an attempt to exact more and more control over our lives by regulating every aspect of life (carbon is one resource that touches every aspect of living in one way or another)…..after all who doesn’t want to “save” the planet. It is propaganda and it is evil. It is the same struggle that has endured through the ages….the attempt to control through domination and deception. We all better wake up and watch the other hand!!!! Their power resides in their secrecy where they remain in the shadows. Expose them and their agenda suffers a mortal blow. Unfortunately, I am not comforted by this at all because human history shows people would rather stay ignorant and in the dark with a false sense of peace, rather than face reality and fight for liberty and freedom. I hope I am wrong this time.

Now, read this trhough before you misunderstand me…
I believe individuals cannot help where they are born, and some countries are so desolate as to have zero natural resources to exploit, except one: citizens. The solution is NOT to through commodity aid to foriegn countries, but to make taxation treaties to allow wealthy nations to come build manufacturing plants to employ the people, giving them purchase power within that 3rd world state generating revinue for that state to do what they need to do in infrastructure work, education, etc. After a few generations, there will exist the innovators like we have here in America who can “build a better plant”, making citizens within said third word country able to make that country thrive with NO resources other than the intellegence within their citizens.
In other words, global capitalism and competition.
In other words, “don’t give them food, give them the means and ability to grow their own food”
The time has now passed for that to happen, as the leading economic powers of the world are either going broke themselves (EU, America) or are not interrested in a capitalist world (China Russia Venezuela).
In other words, this post is mere hindsite concerning the fate of every country on this earth, and I’ll be effed if I know what to do about it now.
In other words, This poopstorm is spiraling way out of control, and it seems to me more and more everyday that the Second Coming of Christ is the only solution one can hope for, lest there be global slavery to the global elite.

At least I will die with my boots on, defending my family if need be.
