An “unbelievable” disguise allowed one Air Canada passenger to illegally board an October 29 flight from Hong Kong to Vancouver — a disguise that now has Canadian Border Security officials on heightened alert.
In what Canada Border Services Agency is describing as an “unbelievable case of concealment,” a gentlemen who initially appeared to be an elderly Caucasian emerged from the airplane lavatory mid-flight as a young, 20-something Asian man. After the man’s swapped identity caught the attention of the flight crew, Border Services Officers (BSOs) were alerted and escorted the man from the plane when it landed on Canadian soil. According to CNN, it was at this time that the young man “proceeded to make a claim for refugee protection.”

“We can confirm that officials from the CBSA met a passenger arriving off AC018 Hong Kong to Vancouver on October 29 and the matter is still under investigation,” Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick told CNN. Fitzpatrick also noted that “there are multiple identity checks before departure at the Hong Kong international airport, including Chinese government-run Hong Kong passport control, which Hong Kong originating passengers must undergo.”
But according to a security alert obtained by CNN, the man traveled with a full disguise kit that seems to have easily fooled Hong Kong’s airport security screeners:
“The subject initially claimed to be in possession of one bag; however, flight crew approached the BSOs with two additional pieces of luggage which were believed to belong to the subject. One bag contained the subject’s personal clothing items while the second contained a pair of gloves. The third contained a ‘disguise kit’ which consisted of a silicone type head and neck mask of an elderly Caucasian male, a brown leather cap, glasses and a thin brown cardigan.”
The man put on the disguise for the officers who “noted he very much resembled an elderly Caucasian man, complete with mimicking the movements of an elderly person. The subject admitted at this time that he had boarded the flight with the mask on and had removed it several hours later,” according to the alert.
The unnamed suspect remains in the custody of Canadian Border Security and the agency says they are now carefully monitoring all passengers arriving on international flights into Vancouver.
According to the security memo, the suspect boarded the Air Canada flight in Hong Kong using a boarding pass that belonged to another passenger. “It is believed that the subject and the actual United States Citizen passenger (whose date of birth is 1955) performed a boarding pass swap, with the subject using an Aeroplan card [frequent flyer] as identification to board the flight,” the alert said.

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 1:48amIt makes me wonder if Osama Bin Laden could get one of these and use it successfully? Or Adam Gadansk?
But what also has me curious is that several times when I’ve traveled in Asia, and recently in Africa, I get photographed at immigration there, both going in and going out. So, how did this guy get through? Also, WHO swapped boarding passes with him? AND, usually there is another photo i.d. check before boarding at the gate in most airports now. I’m a bit suspicious about this case. Could also be a test of security for some other reason.

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 12:49amThe fact that we are obsessively concerned with TSA security at airports while our southern border is a sieve where murderers, kidnappers, human smugglers and drug-runners pass every day is one of the biggest travesties of this administration.
Sharon Angel was criticized for being “race-blind” and not recognizing latinos, yet we have Janet Napolitano (ex-governor of AZ) who certainly knows exactly what is happening in our border and chooses to keep it off the politcal radar solely for liberal expediency – to keep the Latino vote for the left.
Do you folks think it is any coincidence that they very person in charge of protecting our borders is the same person who knows exactly how the leaks in the Mexico borders work. She is basically on the wrong side in the fight, purposely placed there by this president.
I don‘t give a rat’s ash about TSA in airports, I travel all the time and I am fully aware that anytime anyone truly wanted to get away with something they could do it. All the TSA does is catch the whackos, but they are not seriously involved with organized anti-terrorist, or anti-illegal immigration problems in any shape or form.
This is misdirection, by the media (yes, even Fox news) away from the real serious issues. If you want to see at least semi-efficient serious border security go to Europe where they ask you questions about who packed your bags and check your responses, where they actually set thier metal detectors to detect belt buckles.

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 1:13amI agree that our southern border in AZ is a total wacked out mess. Period. And as far as I am of any matter with Napoletano (still think she should have been named Napoleonano – given the size of her ego in proportion to her height) when she left the state of mine – great. When she turned on us and stabbed us in the back over the matter of the illegals, this then became an act of treason and sedition against the land of America.
Fine, if the cartels want to launch an attack against an american city, and the feds do nothing, they will learn one thing about AZ people – we still know how to shoot extremely well.

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 12:47amAmazing, security is only an idea that we think we have control of. It is sucessful only until someone has another idea. Where will it all end? I don‘t fly anymore because I don’t want to feel like a crimimal for taking a flight with all the security in place now, never mind what is going to come. Just not worth any of it.

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 12:36amThis really looks to be an unprecedented level of disguise and I can’t fault the security screeners for this. It does underscore the need to expect absolutely anything though, huh? And more importantly, whoever made that disguise for this kid is a Michelangelo of makeup, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are a pro in the Asian movie industry. Forget fake papers, its all about fake faces now!

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 8:49amI agree with you…this is the excuse they were looking for. I don‘t think it’s that much harder to make a mask where you can talk…I believe this type of makeup, etc. is used all the time by our law enforcement (CIA, etc) and most certainly in Hollywood and in college drama departments. Come on folks. I think we are gradually all going to be with the person who says, why fly anywhere?

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 12:32amWhat could they do? Sneak into the country with no weapons?
They can do that by creating a fake identity with their own picture on it – far easier than this whole disguise business. Or they could simply sneak through one of the hundreds of drug smuggling tunnels on the southern border.
This guy wore the disguise to get away from the security forces of his own country (probably China), not to enter Canada.
Report Post »EP46
Posted on November 5, 2010 at 5:31amAgree about the tunnels. But even that is not necessary. Terrorists have been crossing the southern border for the last two years (and before). It is so silly to have all this airport security when they are coming in from Mexico in droves. The airports are important, but that is the distraction. A few freedom fighters from South American have been caught but most are not. It is not just drugs and illegals crossing the border…….it is terrorists planning to kill us and take our country and the administration is helping them. I

Posted on November 5, 2010 at 1:08amIf this young man is seeking political asylum or refugee status, then I can see how this type of trick to escape from Hong Kong dominated China would be needed.
Yet it also once again shows a major breach of security – another hole to be potentially exploited, if it has not already been exploited, by others who would seek entry into the various North American countries of USA and Canada.
Once again homeland security and the TSA have proven to be less than worthless, even old dollars of the confederacy would probably be worth more.

Ha The desguise certainly looks professional and would fool anybody unles it was touched or examined closely. As if the security folks don’t have enough to look for, now this. If the guy hadn’t changed while in flight he probabbly would never have been discovered. Makes you wonder if this guy was the first to try the new technique. Sure would be uncomfortable to wear on a long flight but I guess it would be worth the inconvenience if the person managed to leave and enter countries without being detected. About the time we think we’ve seen it all and….wrong ! Ha
