UNC Bench Flees Court Early in Closing Seconds of Upset Loss to Avoid Rambunctious FSU Fans

UNC Bench Flees Court Early After FSU Loss

Some may call it responding to safety concerns, others will say it was the icing on the cake for an embarrassing 33-point loss. Either way, the decision of University of North Carolina Head Basketball Coach Roy Williams to pull his bench players off the court with time still left on the clock during an upset loss to Florida State was unprecedented.

FSU Coach Leonard Hamilton had suggested that Williams and his team take cover before the Seminole student section invaded the court come the final buzzer. Williams complied with 14.2 seconds left, as the third-ranked team in the nation left the scene entirely aside from five walk-ons finally getting their chance to see some playing time.

As expected, come game’s end FSU fans charged the court to celebrate the enormous victory.

“There is no facet of the game that we don’t need to work on, from free throws to box outs to guarding the ball to help side defense to not turning it over,” Williams told the Associated Press following the 90-57 loss. “Florida State made us look like a bunch of little junior high guys.”

I stand corrected (my bad). You are right, it was Duke. Other than that, Roy can still out whine Steve.

Sad to see what sports in this country has come to. There are thugs everywhere who can’t seem to sit and enjoy competition. What they know best is breaking rules and ignoring authority. But hey, It‘s an O’bama world, isn’t it? This is what Liberal-Socialist-Marxist-Progressive-Democrat policies bring. Enjoy!

Relax! I certainly think that calling excited college students “thugs” for rushing the floor is more than a little ridiculous. Obserd really. Smart move on both coaches part. Congrats FSU. GO HEELS!

Sitting and watching the competition without getting excited is for spectators watching a ping pong match in red China. Chill dude. Knuckleheads run even amongst us here at the blaze.

While in college, an alumnus wrote a letter to the paper that basically said our behavior was so loud that if we could not sit down and be quiet during a game we should not attend. We obliged. After most of the season was gone, with empty seats and no students at games, the school was begging us to come back to the games. We did the following year.

I think they should build a wall with a plywood bottom and then chicken wire to see through. The fans can throw their beer bottles at the wire “fence”.

The best way to handle this id let the fans rush the floor let the rest of the fans out surround the floor with law enforcement identify all the fans on the floor and then ban them from attending any games for a year or two or is money the big factor here and we want their ticket money

Wow! Really? That statement deserves a challenge, and for the record the NCAA does not allow alcohol to be served at sporting events held at campus sporting facilities.

It seems like some people just look for reasons to be offended or to make unfounded statements. You do the Blazes audience a disservice when you post idiotic things about stories of no real importance. If you are simply that negative of a person then stick to posting about the current administration not students being excited about a crushing victory. I’m sure you never got excited about your college team when you were 19. Jeez!!!

The statement which “deserves a challenge,” srtttu, is your own. I attend an NCAA Division 1 school and have season tickets to a Big East team’s basketball games, and there is a ****-load of alcohol served in the stadiums.

I have never seen a “top coach” whine so much about everything and act the dramaqueen. This was totally unnecessary. Does he actually think the other team cares about his players after their team stomped the living crud out of UNC? No, they just wanted to celebrate with there team. This is the same coach who kicked out a Presbyterian fan for shouting “miss it” when his team was shooting freethrows. This further proves the motto of other ACC fans that they really are “Carowhina.”

Roy is a cry baby! He was pretty upset that recently some UNC fans sold their tickets and the opposing teams fans bought them and were seated behind the UNC bench. In another situation, he had a fan removed for heckling him. He definitely has the thinnest skin af any coach at the Division 1 level in any sport. Can anyone say OBAMA junior!!

How about arresting as many people as you can get your hands on when the idiots storm the court/field. That would put an end to the idiotic practice very quickly and a decision like this would never be necessary.

As a college basketball fan, I don’t blame Roy for doing this. There is an inherent danger of being trampled, plus it only takes one idiot (and there are many) with a little too much alcohol to do something really stupid to an opposing player. There is nothing dishonorable about it.

It’s a smart move in the name of safety. What exactly is the salary of College Basketball player these days? If you watch the closing seconds of the video, state troopers went to the aid of what seems to be just people, an assistant coach and 5 players who were escorted safely through a head on rush of FSU fans verses how do you protect an entire bench in that situation.

Class act, we lost, please excuse us so we can get out of your way so you can enjoy your celebration. See you in March.

Is this really a story that deserves coverage on your website that is supposed to be so “cutting edge”??

I’m extremely proud of your editors for not having any major misspellings (which is a frequent occurrence on The Blaze) but they might want to look up the definition of “unprecedented”. This has been done before but, I guess, because it’s sports related The Blaze staff just has never seen it before.

From years of experience, unemployed kids go crazy when their idols overcome great teams. It’s unprofessional not to guarantee safety for the visitors. It’s awkward to see the opposing team dismissed in that fashion, ultimately, who is responsible for those kids? The Coach.
