Bill Maher & Elisabeth Hasselbeck Spar on ‘The View’: ‘I Feel Like I’m in High School’

It was an uncomfortably tense scene on the set of “The View” this Tuesday after host Elisabeth Hasselbeck confronted guest Bill Maher over a joke he had made about her during a February episode of “Real Time.”
Mediate explains the background:
…Maher had made a joke that, were Hosni Mubarak to release the then-captured Lara Logan, they could trade him [Elisabeth] Hasselbeck. At the time, Hasselbeck had been furious, starting a mini feud that an unrepentant Maher seemed to have no interest in fighting. That dynamic was continued all these months later as Hasselbeck was still very, very upset and Maher was still very, very uninterested in fighting her.
Hasselbeck was clearly ready to go at it from the moment Maher took the stage. After he made a joke about Republicans and then jokingly apologized to her, she said he could apologize later. But she then decided it couldn’t wait and jumped right into it, bringing up the joke as well as the horrible circumstances that we now know befell Logan in Egypt (it is important to note that Maher made the joke a week before those details were released). An annoyed-seeming Maher quickly responded that he does a comedy show, she’s a public figure, and, as such, she’s “fodder for comedians to make comments on.”
Business Insider captured some of the back and forth, which also included Hasselbeck snapping at the audience:
When Hasselbeck re-read the joke, the audience tittered with laughter, which got her blood racing even more. “That’s fine if you want to laugh,” she said, “but I … sit with the best comedians… you can‘t tell me I’m wrong when I say that wasn’t that funny.”
Maher calmly noted that she‘s a public figure and the comment wasn’t aimed at her personally.
“Would you say it again?” she pressed.
“Would I say it again, having my crystal ball, [if I] knew I was coming here and had to spend my whole segment talking about it?” he answered. “No, I wouldn’t. It wouldn’t really be worth it.”
[...]
As Maher discussed the candidates, she snapped, “Wow, I actually feel smarter sitting next to you.”
“Really?” Maher said. “Because I feel like I’m in high school sitting next to you.”
None of Hasselbeck’s co-hosts seemed to offer their colleague a hand either, making the exchange all the more painful to watch:

He really needs a true thinking-man’s conservative to embarrass him in public, one who has the facts and courage and truth on his side. I‘m sure Glenn Beck wouldn’t run from a heads up debate with Mr. Maher. Come on, Glenn, put this liberal in his place. You’re not afraid, are you, Glenn? Invite him on your show like O’Reilly did. Elizabeth Hasselback, who is a real woman, had every right to be offended by Maher’s comment. The fact that she was willing to make him answer for that, just underscores what a strong fighter she is. She is braver than most of the GOP in Congress, sad to say. She has to be, or she wouldn’t be on The View. That show would be dead without Elizabeth. but Maher unlike Stewart has a great distain for women in general. He enjoys using the word cu*t to describe a women.
I believe he has huge issues in the “lady” department… the words he uses to describe women and the women he still has to “pay” for a date lead me to this conclusion…
The women on this show are not Elizabeths friends … they sat there and let this runt degrade her and all women in general with this obscene statement once again … who does that? Anyone take a look at Joys face when Maher was saying this to Elizabeth … she thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it Joy is not a friend. She is a pit bull in heels with bad hair.
These women walked off the set over a statement from Bill O’Reilly yet for their “Friend ” they just sat there and enjoyed this?
Note to the “Ladies” of View and Maher RAPE… is never comical!

When asked about the relationship, Stein told the paper, “She’s attacked a lot of my friends, but what can I say, opposites attract!”[50] On January 7, 2008, however, Stein told the New York Post that the relationship was over, citing irreconcilable differences

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 8:38amFor all of you who believe that Bill Maher is funny, here are some of his quotes:
“We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardly.”
“To those people who say, ‘My father is alive because of animal experimentation,’ I say ‘Yeah, well, good for you. This dog died so your father could live.’ Sorry, but I am just not behind that kind of trade off.”
“But I’ve often said that if I had — I have two dogs — if I had two retarded children, I’d be a hero. And yet the dogs, which are pretty much the same thing. What? They’re sweet. They’re loving. They’re kind, but they don’t mentally advance at all. … Dogs are like retarded children.”
“You can’t be a rational person six days a week and on one day of the week, go to a building, and think you are drinking the blood of a two thousand year old space god. That doesn’t make you a person of faith…, that makes you a schizophrenic.”
“Again, (America is) a stupid country with stupid people who don’t pay attention.”
I fail to see Mr. Maher’s humor and I am still looking for the “political satire” in these quotes.

Something you were raised to believe?
No matter how bad you want it to be true and how bad you believe it there is zero proof. You have to have blind faith and you have to “fear God” aka don’t question it too much. That‘s why you’re not supposed to eat from the tree of knowledge.
You call it the truth like you know something that I don’t. Meanwhile, Bill Maher mocks religion but his view on the afterlife is that he doesn’t know and no one else knows. Some just believe they do.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 5:21pmRight there with ya, CATB! Elizabeth demonstrated great restraint.
How do lefties, like GER, blindly and dutifully tow the line for the party regardless of the subject matter? Do you have no morals at all, GER? Do you applaud all rape or just ones for people you disagree with? Do you have no ability to independently think? Nevermind, I forgot…..your posts are just a school project and you aren’t engaging your brain or heart at all.

Oh that’s right, you are a coward just like most “little” men and hide behind your keyboard in mommie’s cellar. Step out into Bubba Land and see how far insulting women will get you. Hint: Call 911 and mention a need for an emergency tracheotomy to restore your airway after someone renders your whiney little larynx incapable of speech. Bring it anytime.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 12:22amI don’t think Maher was calling for her to be raped. Let’s not over-read into the joke.
Report Post »I don’t like Maher ONE BIT, but please, this joke was not about rape and it was not about the lack of sensitivity towards women. It boils down to Maher telling the world he could stand to live without Hasselbeck. If you can’t see that, then your disgust for Maher is blinding your reason.
JJ Coolay
Posted on November 16, 2011 at 12:25amDid you guys even READ the story?? It said the joke was made a week before the details of Logan’s situation was even disclosed. The joke was NOT about rape. I can’t believe I am defending Maher on this, but come on conservatives… be reasonable!!

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 10:24am@JJ COOLAY…Yes, I did read the story. The information that has been released since he made the “joke” should have been the catalyst for a retraction or an apology…it was in bad taste. Whether he knew what happened or not when he made the remark is not relevant, it is now part of the discussion.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 4:55pmI’ll explain this in the easiest terms possible. Every so often God lends a helpful hand to create a nation without walls, and the world around that nation is always rotten. The U.S was that “Was” that nation. And that’s why that nation is called the nation in constant decay. God uses that nation in constant decay to gauge the nations of the earth, and therefore if the nation in constant decay is terrible, then the rest of the world must be ten times worse. That‘s the way it works and if you don’t understand that, then you are not going to understand the Bible.
