Unemployment Drops to 9.4%

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent last month, its lowest level in 19 months. That was because more people found jobs, but also because some people gave up on their job searches.
The Labor Department says employers added 103,000 jobs in December, an improvement from November’s revised total of 71,000 but far below most analysts’ expectations.
Private employers added a net total of 113,000 jobs last month. Government shed 10,000.
The drop in the unemployment rate was partly influenced because the government no longer counts people as unemployed when they stop looking for work.
Through all of 2010, the nation added 1.1 million jobs, or an average of 94,000 jobs a month.
Economists expect hiring will ramp up this year, with some predicting double last year’s total of jobs or more. A tax cut package enacted last month should boost consumer and business spending.
More people were hired in previous months than the government first estimated. The economy added 210,000 jobs in October, above the previous figure of 172,000. November’s total was revised up from 39,000.
Fewer people said they were out of work last month. The number of unemployed fell by more than 500,000 to just under 14.5 million.
Still, the unemployment rate has topped 9 percent for 20 months, the longest such streak on record. And even with last year’s job gains, the unemployment rate fell only from 9.7 percent to 9.4 percent.
The economy needs to generate about 125,000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth and prevent the unemployment rate from rising. More than double that amount is needed to reduce the rate.

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 11:36amWe all know that the “real unemployment” rates are much higher than 9.4%. Washington has been under reporting the rates for a long time. Google “unemployment numbers” and “real unemployment rates” and you will find that a lot of people have had questions for a long time about the numbers!!

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 9:56amIn the great depression 1 in 4 people were said to be unemployed …25%
Report Post »Today the U3 survey numbers from the BLS says 9.4%
And those numbers are heavily skewed towards a lower number
I know you can’t compare the 2 but lets entertain that idea for one moment.
Great depression = hard times for a much more independent society
There are 3 times more people here now than then
So for every 100 people then there is 300 now
Or for every 25 people unemployed then there are 28.2 unemployed today.
So even going by their numbers, there are more unemployed today.
Also take into account that women werent as common in the workforce and there was substantially more people living off the land fending for themselves which didnt count.
I can only conclude, we live in an overly dependent society with a larger problem than the Great Depression with the only difference being politicians with bandaids for votes.
The wound is bad my friends, lift the bandaid and take a look.

The liberal media will say anything that the corrupt Oblahma administration wants them to say. All I can say is the job market and real estate market in AZ SUCKS. I have been unemployed for over 1 year and I have been called for 1 interview after sending hundreds and hundreds of resumes. I think the part that is the most sad is that when all of these millions of people stop getting unemployment and still don’t have a job, they just aren’t a factor any longer? I just wonder how many American citizens will be living on the street homeless and this administration will keep taking credit for the lowered unemployment rate?

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 10:25amIn essence, that‘s exactly what’s happening.
Now that the Bush tax rates have been extended and GOP is in control of the purse strings, businesses know that they aren’t going to be raked over the tax coals.
Let me restate a slightly simpler way:
-Business owners know they‘ll have money and won’t have to lay people off next month because some tax-happy, free spending Statist won’t jack confiscatory tax rates up at the drop of a hat.
-Now that this is established, they’re somewhat free to reinvest that money into growing their business and hiring people to allow for that growth.
You want proof this is what’s happening? Remember how everyone on the Left wants to give Clinton credit for the economic boom of the ‘90’s? Who was in control of the House when it happened?
Yeah.
Report Post »TonyDarrington
Posted on January 7, 2011 at 4:23pmNO, BO will take the credit due to his “Tax Cuts”. Jonathon Seidl even fell into the trap of calling it a tax cut. The Tax rate extension will have a minimal -at best- effect on the economy. The tax rate is not changing. It would have been bad on the economy if the rates expired (increased). It would have been better to get an actual cut.

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 9:57ame2 MOMENT: The Bureau of Labor Statistic’s unemployment rate is a problem (surprise!)….Mostly because it counts people who want full time jobs but can only find part-time jobs as being fully employed. The BLS has a number for that too which they call U-6, which counts people who are “UNEMPLOYED.” …(Why does everything have to be twisted with this government? Why?)…The U-6 rate was at 17.4% SO that means the TRUE RATE is NOW 17.1…CONGRATULATIONS BO!
AND something that number misses is the number of people who have fallen out of the jobs market entirely. Meaning that they’ve looked for a job, couldn’t find a job, and so have given up looking despite the fact that they still NEED and WANT a job.
If you calculate those people in, the unemployment rate is closer to 22%

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 10:04am@Tobywil2 – Well this is actually for anyone interested. I work in the Oilfield/Natural Gas industry. Areas like the Marcellus Shale in PA/WV/OH are booming, also the Bakken Shale in the Dakotas.
The oil industry is not just looking for people to work at rigs & well sites. They need chemists, engineers, IT personnel, HR personnel, heavy duty mechanics, electronics technicians, warehouse attendants.
In addition, the areas where the boom is going on needs people to service hotels, local mechanics, restaurants, etc.
I luckily was recruited out of Boston 5 years ago to Oklahoma and have moved since then. The oilfield is a great place to meet people and make a living if you can lift a finger, show initiative and be mobile.
Please visit http://www.gomarcellusshale.com, http://www.naturalgasmatters.com or search for an oil and gas recruiter. Even without experience, many companies are willing to train if you are willing to move.
Other companies you may look at are: Schlumberger, Halliburton, BJ Services/Baker Hughes, Weatherford Int, Superior Well Services, Frac Tech.
Chesapeake, Range Resources, Anadarko Petroleum, Chief Oil & Gas.
I have no stake in this other than getting some honest people a chance.

Think about it from the aspect of the business owner as these two things were the most influential decisions to wait on hiring and expanding your business. Most Democrats couldn’t figure this out as most Democrats know nothing about the plight of the private business owners.
