Unemployment Falls to 8.9% — Hits Two Year Low

WASHINGTON (AP) — Employers in February hired at the fastest pace in almost a year and the unemployment rate fell to 8.9 percent – a nearly two-year low.

The economy added 192,000 jobs last month, with factories, professional and business services, education and health care among those expanding employment. Retailers, however, trimmed jobs. State and local government, wrestling with budget shortfalls, slashed 30,000 jobs, the most since November.

The government’s report Friday bolstered hopes that employers will shift into a more aggressively hiring mode and allow the economic recovery to get on firmer footing.

The unemployment rate has been falling for three months, down from 9.8 percent in November.

I believe unemployment figures are based on the number of people reported receiving unemployment benefits – as time passes the people who have been unemployed the longest are dropped from the benefit list. These figures would not include the number of people who were not eligible for unemployment or the people who’s benefits ran out prior to the extensions being granted. Like all statistical data, if you are not happy with the numbers keep working on them a method will develop to show the stats you are looking for.

This headline is misleading. The ONLY reason the unemployment rate has fallen is because the participation rate has plunged. People have become disheartened and are dropping OUT of the workforce. They are NOT reentering the workforce!
This is particularly bad because with a low participation rate, and no more unemployment compensation, it will create a drag on the economy. With the dead drag also pulling down economic activity, and inflation surging, it’s going to be a long, hard, and ugly slog toward recovery.

Crude just hit $103.50 in the past 30 minutes!

That would be the last administration – when unemployment benefits were not extended at all! That way the unemployed ceased to exist faster than they do now. If the administration decided NOT to extend benefits for our long term unemployed sisters and brothers, we would have been at 7% unemployment for over 14 months.

The stats will continue to go down until they are below 8% so the liberal state media can glow and gloat about how great a job their Socialist leader is doing and how he definitely deserves to be reelected. If he is reelected, I don’t think there is any hope for our country.

There is a lot of unrest in the middle east, and our departments of state and defense are addressing this. Meanwhile, Wall Street is pushing up oil profits, betting that we will blame rising costs on turmoil instead of exploitation. Jobs are being created in the manufacturing sector for the next 18 months as Boeing and General Motors continue to win contracts. Average private union wages are not falling and individual buying power is increasing. When banks begin loaning to small business, the economy will grow and hiring will increase.

Nope, don‘t buy it because real economists don’t look at unemployment numbers but rather increases in tax revenue. This can be done easily by running reports from the IRS for newly created W-4′s. They house all of our SSN’s since we must declare them during a hiring process. Tax revenue projections slowly increase in direct relation to these numbers. Granted, people that work “under the table” won’t be reported but that is to be expected in labor jobs like constructions and agriculture. What’s the point of having low unemployment if the tax revenue does not increase?

Basically this is a ploy to spurn the election campaign yet keep it under wraps for now. Obama is projected to spend close to 1 billion dollars in the next two years to keep his job. This reminds me of global warming as so many were quick to jump on board with our “carbon footprint” and start pushing green jobs and technology yet it was proved that CO2 doesn’t even make up 3% of our atmosphere. The same will be said about these fudged numbers since public sector jobs should never be included with “job creation” as public sector jobs take from our tax dollars to pay their salaries while producing nothing. Hence, we need to shrink the public sector.

These numbers are skewed because they don’t count the millions that have lost the EU benefits or have just plain given up. The country is in worse shape then ever because everything Obama does and doesn‘t do is geared towards driving Americans to the point where they’ll accept his redistribution of wealth agenda. A better poll would be around the question, “Are you better off now than before Obama took over?” And start by asking the ones in the Gulf area who have lost their livelihoods because he just about killed all drilling. He ain’t gonna move towards energy independence no how – no way. Alaska is teeming with oil and gas, but nope…can’t drill there. For some reason I can’t fathom, Mr. Obama wants to keep billions of US dollars flowing to those Muslim countries who let [some] slip to the terrorists. With minor exceptions these Muslim countries have as an end goal the destruction of America. I‘m afraid this President has an agenda that’s frightening!

The food stamp program is the modern equivalent of the old bread lines. More than one out of every seven Americans now depends on the federal government for food. Oh, but haven’t you heard? The economy is showing dramatic improvement. Corporate profits are up. The stock market is soaring. Yea, right!

The truth is that there is no sign that any of the long-term trends that are destroying the U.S. economy are even slowing down.

Millions of jobs continue to be shipped overseas.

The U.S. dollar continues to be devalued.

The federal government continues to go into more debt.

State and local governments continue to go into more debt.

Our trade deficit continues to grow.

Our cities continue to be transformed into wastelands as they are being systematically de-industrialized.

The number of Americans that are dependent on the government continues to soar.

The U.S. middle class continues to shrink.

I don’t believe this stat either–its highly manipulated and carefully crafted to mislead. This stat doesn‘t include those people who have stopped looking for work and doesn’t include those who have run out of unemployment $$$ and have have dropped off the unemployment rolls. The real number is more like 17-19%.

They must have removed more Potential jobs from the count, or more people ran out of unemployment benefits. That’s how it went from 9.6% to 9%. Lies like this are how you know Election campaigns are starting.

My county rose to 16.2% with the highest community (town at 39.6%. Not jiving with the national figures. We are a predominantly Agri-oil community. Maybe with spring growing season coming there will be a drop but the exploration/ production end of oil will continue to fall and the % will rise in that sector. Also, I expect that most of the agri end will be illegals unless there is a crackdown….HA! Housing market continues to be worse here too with more forclosures occuring. My field is home and building inspections and that is just plain suuucky. My business is in the dumper. Most property purchases are from investors and they are not doing inspections…period…or few are doing inspections.

Just as last month’s figure was revised to 10.3%….Actual unemployment is about double the given figure…consider that 400,000 jobs need to be generated each month in order to bring us back to “full” employment, and only 193,000 new jobs came available….tells me that these aren’t “new” jobs aren’t being created…only current jobs being filled after firings. NO NEW JOBS ARE BEING CREATED!

Yep, your correct!! It’s all a lie. The unemployment is actually hovering around 10.2% and the total unemployment is around 22% – 23%. (Ugh, this is old school math prior to barries rearranging the protocols.) Don’t be fooled by these numbers folks. barry and crew must produce fictitious just to keep the ‘talk’ down. This, I truly believe, is going to be our norm from here on out. Sad.

O’bum and his .9 love affair is so apparent it is laughable. Soon, very soon the unemployment rate will be 7.9%, at last below that 8% fall-over-the-cliff number his economic gurus concocted to justify his first money grab. Start to play the Red Traitor’s cliff fall video backwards, folks. By 2012 unemployment will be at its lowest since Repubs scr*wed the economy.

C’mon folks. It is perfectly understandable. When the government stops counting people as unemployed because they either stopped looking (i.e. there are far too jobs to be found) or because they dropped off the unemployment rolls (i.e. again because there are far too few jobs to be found) it is easy for the unemployment number to drop.

It is similar to what Glenn galked about in December about inflation. If you don’t count things like oil that are skyrocketing, it is easier to say there is no inflation. It is no longer about truth. It is about making the numbers look the best so that the government can’t/won’t be blamed so that politicians can be re-elected because things are GOING SO GREAT!

You don’t believe it because it suggests that the work done by the Obama administration is working. Unemployment stopped rising at an accelerated rates soon after Obama implemented his rescue packages–that means the second order change in employment turned positive. Later, employment started to grow rather than shrink, but at too slow a rate to impact the unemployment rate in percentage terms. Now, the employment growth is starting to rise fast enough to move the unemployment rate down just a bit. This is all part of a slow, tough haul back to full employment. It will take a lot of time, but this is certainly at least a partial vindication of the actions taken by the Fed and the federal government to avoid a Great Depression. Smart people, including Republicans, know what was avoided. Others continue to gripe and complain, but they lack the knowledge and thus the credibility to have any authority in the debate.

The other sad thing is that the folks here who correctly point out that many are still suffering go on to support policies that are the cause of their plight. Germany makes it tougher to fire workers or downsize manufacturing than the US or the UK do, yet they now are enjoying a huge export-led economic recovery that is enriching a larger percentage of their population. The reasons for this–stronger unions, better education and technical training, better health care coverage, higher taxes to support all of this–are consistently rejected by conservatives. So you can lament the plight of the poor and lower class all you want, but know that the policies that you promote and support are exactly the ones that cause their plight to begin with.

Mr.Boehner, you ran for election of the platform of CREATING jobs.

So far – two months into this Congress the Republicans have focussed on repealing the Affordable Healthcare Bill, repealing the EPA,repealing Planned Parenthood and throwing ALL women under the bus, cutting the budget (but ONLY for workers), DOMA, etc., etc. NOT ONE WORD ABOUT CREATING JOBS.

Mr. Boehner – Where are the jobs??

Mark Zandi of Moodys (Republican) says that the Republican budget will kill at least 700 thousand jobs. Goldman Sachs BOTH suggests that it will reduce the country’s economy by at least 2% – which equates to a couple of million jobs lost. Now neither of these are liberal in their outlook so take heed.

The republicans have already increased the deficit by $230 Billion by trying to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act – which won’t survive the Senate or the Veto pen (f it gets that far).

I’m sorry guys, but Republican‘s and Tea Party members care NOTHING about this country’s economy. They are simply trying to unseat this President. Thats OK, I understand that, but don’t destroy this country while doing it.

How many folks on this site have someone in their family or circle of friends who is unemployed – short term or long term? You really should learn more about what is going on in the 112th Congress.

Mr. Boehner – WHERE ARE THE JOBS you campaigned on producing??

I’m sorry to hear that you are long-time unemployed. However how do you equate that with 220 thousand private sector jobs created over the last month with ‘not being counted any more.

I agree that some of you have fallen off the radar – which ONLY happens when you stop going to sign up at the unemployment office – even though you will NOT get a check.

We are WAYYYYYYY past the losing 760 thousand jobs every month – and this was the NINTH consecutive month of private sector job increases. Don’t give up – and please, continue to register each week – or whenever your state says you must. Its like voting, Only if you register do the correct results show up in print.
