Unemployment Rate Falls to Lowest Since March 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. unemployment rate fell last month to its lowest level in more than two and a half years, as employers stepped up hiring in response to the slowly improving economy.
The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate dropped sharply to 8.6 percent last month, down from 9 percent in October. The rate hasn’t been that low since March 2009, during the depths of the recession.
Still, 13.3 million Americans remain unemployed. And a key reason the unemployment rate fell so much was because roughly 315,000 people had given up looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.
Employers added 120,000 jobs last month. And the previous two months were revised up to show that 72,000 more jobs added – the fourth straight month the government revised prior months higher.
Private employers added a net gain of 140,000 jobs last month. Governments, meanwhile, shed another 20,000 jobs, mostly at the local and state level. Governments at all levels have shed almost a half-million jobs in the past year.
More than half the jobs added were by retailers, restaurants and bars, a sign that holiday hiring has kicked in. Retailers added 50,000 jobs, the sector’s biggest gain since April. Restaurants and bars hired 33,000 new workers. The health care industry added 17,000.
The presidential election is less than a year away, which means President Barack Obama will almost certainly face voters with the highest unemployment rate of any president since World War II.
And Europe’s financial crisis threatens to slow U.S. growth next year. A recession in Europe could reduce U.S. exports, hurt global financial markets and dampen business confidence.
Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, estimates that the economy will expand 2.5 percent in the last three months of this year. But he expects growth to slow to 1.5 percent in 2012, partly because of the crisis in Europe. And if Congress fails to extend the Social Security tax cut and long-term unemployment benefits this month, growth is likely to slow even further.
Weak job growth means companies don’t have to raise pay to keep their employees. Fewer jobs and lower pay leaves consumers with less money to spend. That’s holding back economic growth.
In the past three months, the economy has added an average of 143,000 net jobs per month. That’s enough to keep up with population growth and better than the previous three months, when the economy averaged just 84,000.
Other recent economic reports have been positive, too.
Factory output expanded last month. Retailers reported a strong start to holiday sales over the Thanksgiving weekend, consumer confidence surged in November to the highest level since July, and Americans’ pay rose in October by the most in seven months.
Car sales also rose sharply in November, normally a lackluster month for the auto industry. Chrysler, Ford, Nissan and Hyundai all reported double-digit gains on Thursday, compared to a year ago.

So why is Congress pushing for extending the payroll tax cuts? Why is POTUS jumping up and down wanting to get this extension? Something is not right. And it is my money these guys are spending.

That said, I do contract work, but it’s all but nil (made around $150 2 weeks ago, but last week and this week nada). Because I do contract work, I can‘t partake in unemployment but wouldn’t now anyway (did so for 4 months before starting the contractor route 1.5 years ago). Trust me, the jobs, if any, are not much more then minimum wage jobs. NAFTA and GATT has finally did what Ross Perot warned back at that time and we can thank Clinton and Gingritch for that (despise them both). I’m just worried what happens in the next few weeks with the Euro crisis. If we think things are bad now, how about the what happens to the dollar since the bought a $Trillion worth of Euros in exchange for dollars to shore up the Euro. God help us all if the Euro fails now. :)

People who have been unemployed for longer than x lose their benefits and are dropped from the unemployment numbers, and those who have taken part-time work at wally world, rather than finding work in their usual field of say computer programing, are counted as “employed”.
“Payroll gains in the U.S. picked up last month and the jobless rate unexpectedly fell to the lowest level since March 2009, a decline augmented by the departure of Americans from the labor force….
Report Post »The unemployment rate, derived from a separate survey of households, was forecast to hold at 9 percent. The decrease in the jobless rate reflected a 278,000 gain in employment at the same time 315,000 Americans left the labor force
The so-called underemployment rate — which includes part- time workers who’d prefer a full-time position and people who want work but have given up looking — decreased to 15.6 percent from 16.2 percent.
The report also showed an increase in long-term unemployed Americans. The number of people unemployed for 27 weeks or more increased as a percentage of all jobless, to 43 percent from 42.4 percent.”

You’re saying that your 1 example should make us all happy when there are still the 25,000,000+ who are still unemployed? ROFL!! Go back to sleep.”
I could give you an example of the other 29 people that got hired at the same job including my sister. Or a friend who lost his job a few months ago and just got hired . Or how about the fact that the company I am with is hiring 100 more full time employess that start on January 9th. But i am sure you would not be pleased with that as well since you are such a patriot. Thats is over 130 peopel just in one county that i am aware of being hired and that is good news. Also we had a pay freeeze during the Bush years ( becasue the owner of the company saw the recession coming a mile away as most wiht half of a brain did) and imposed a pay freeze to keep everyone he had and the doors open. We no longer have a pay freeze and I got an increas in salary a few months ago, just got promoted so i get another increase and a merit increase in 2 more months. So i would say based on my experiance and the other 1500 people that work here things are getting better.
But please, complain about good news more

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 11:10amNevermind, the numbers are a farce… The fact is that over 80,000 where seasonal jobs that come every year but are gone come February. You are happy for the wrong reasons. The 315,000 that stopped looking are people who 99 weeks of unemployment expired. Why are we to be happy at this? This is not growth of the economy. We had only 2.5% growth for the last three months. However it will drop to 1.5% in 2012. Not to mention that the article reads that the lack of available new jobs is keeping pay low (IE NO RAISES).
Meanwhile, inflation is hitting in energy and food prices (which are not included in the inflation rate the government claims). Thus, the government is creating and spreading the gap between rich and poor by making more middle class fall into poverty through devaluing the dollar. It is to create the elites in the new economy of COMMUNISM. I am not a hack, I am spreading the truth. This is opium to keep you sated. The Blaze is actually trying to warn you.

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 5:23pmTrust me Watashbuddyfriend, you can trust the fact that the government put out an 8.6% number, but if you think things are getting better consider this. The economy added 140,000 NET jobs in November. Meanwhile, 340,000 workers either ran of out of unemployment benefits or just gave up on looking for work. To these numbers, those 340,000 people DO NOT EXIST! THey are NOT included in the total workforce number (the denominator). The rate is unemployed people divided by total workforce (people working or LOOKING for work). Bottom line is this….140,000 people working in new jobs (good) and a reduction in the numerator. 340,000 nonexistant people who are in neither the numerator or the denominator…RESULT…200,000 FEWER people working in November than in October. Does that sound like things are getting better??? Fact is, the 340,000 number is the largest we’ve seen since the recession began and this report is ACTUALLY the worst unemployment report since the early 70s (if you are an American with some principles and work ethic)….But if you are a pol in DC, yeah, this is great cause it gives you more ammo to fool the media and the masses. People, we have to look INSIDE THE NUMBERS. The 8.6% is a purely political tool! If all unemployed folks stopped looking for work and collecting UI benefits, guess what…The rate would be 0%!

Report Post »You really have it backwards… We “Patriots” are upset because the numbers are false. They are based on temporary jobs for the Christmas season and people who are no longer collecting unemployment. If anything, we are had that the people stopped collecting (thus not adding to more spending we can not afford), but the numbers of unemployment are still high and are not calculated in the numbers the government claims as unemployment. Don’t be fooled by the title. The really part of the story is that the the economy is slow due lack of new jobs being created in the private sector. I wonder, what is causing this? Oh yeah, uncertainty in the marketplace that causes people like me from opening my own business and seeking a business loan when the economy is on the edge of tanking due to government overspending and devaluing of the dollar. Thanks to increased labor costs, healthcare costs, regulations that make first time business owners cross their eyes, and over-taxation the system is crumbling. Those who are the benefiting end (IE collect food stamps, collecting from the EITC and receiving other forms of government assistance) are more likely not to work hard as they will not benefit from their additional labor when the aid is received freely. What? Work to earn $40,000+? Why? The government gives me the difference for having 2 kids and working part time. http://www.alligator.org/opinion/columns/article_e2ca9e2a-f86d-11e0-a400-001cc4c03286.html?mode=print

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 11:08amYou need 120,000 new jobs each month just to keep up with new people entering the job market. So the“creation” of 120,000 jobs does nothing to lower the unemployment rate, it simply keeps up with the new job seekers such as college grads and high school kids looking for work for the first time.
The unemployment situation will not begin to improve until more than 120,000 jobs are created, although it will be touted as a miracle by the MSM and Obama as well. So what people are berrating here is not the 120,000 people who have found work, it is the MISREPRESENTATION of truth to the public that will happen in the political and media circles.

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 9:54amActually, look at this line:
“And a key reason the unemployment rate fell so much was because roughly 315,000 people had given up looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.”
The reason unemployment is falling is this, not the 120,000 temporary jobs for the seasonal help. The fact is that the 99 weeks of unemployment is ending for thousands of collectors. The Government changed the unemployment numbers in the 90′s to only include those who are actually collecting (which you can only collect if you are looking for work). If you cease looking, or run out of benefits, you are no longer included in the count. Beware, this is a false number! The unemployment is really much higher.
Here are some numbers to run by:
http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-01-24/markets/29974517_1_part-time-unemployment-labor-force
Employed: 139.206 million people (58.3% of labor force)
Unemployed: 14.485 million people (6.1% of labor force)
However, this is not 100% of the labor force. Some of the missing people:
Part time employed for economic reasons: 8.931 million people.
Part time employed for non-economic reasons: 18.184 million people.
The by far largest category “missing” from both the Employed and Unemployed statistics is the “Not In Labor Force”: 85.2 Million people.
So the accurate numbers are:
Report Post »Employed: 139.206 million people (58.3% of labor force)
Under or Unemployed: 126.8 million people (41.7% of labor force)
