‘Uniform of Progress’: Levi’s Now Advocates Freezing Your Jeans to Save Water & the Planet

In September, we brought you the controversial Levi’s ad that glorified revolution. It was then that we introduced you to their new slogan, the “uniform of progress.” Well, progress’s jumpsuit has struck again, this time with the curious idea that you should freeze your jeans, not wash them.

The idea comes from the company’s new “Water<Less” push, which encourages its cotton growers, its jean-makers, and its customers to conserve water. Why? Global warming of course. And what better way to not use water than to not wash your jeans.

The story was a New York Times hit this week:

It has introduced a brand featuring stone-washed denim smoothed with rocks but no water. It is sewing tags into all of its jeans urging customers to wash less and use only cold water.

To customers seeking further advice, Levi Strauss suggests washing jeans rarely, if at all — the theory being that putting them in the freezer will kill germs that cause them to smell.

And here’s the explanation as to why: “It fears that water shortages caused by climate change may jeopardize the company’s very existence in the coming decades by making cotton too expensive or scarce.”

So what about the “freezing jeans” method? Does it work? Meet this guy, from Apartmenttherapy.com, who is quite passionate about his jeans freezing and takes you step-by-step through the process. Apparently, it’s “what everybody does:”

The ABC News piece mentioned in the video, where the college students wears the same pair of jeans for 15 months and then they measure the bacteria levels, is for real. The student is Canadian Josh Le, and here’s what he found:

“If you don’t wash your clothing, it raises questions. I was very careful with odor. I did the smell test in the morning,” Le said.

If the jeans smelled, he might stick them in the freezer overnight or let them hang for a few hours.

His parents never quite understood what he was doing.

“My parents, they’re a bit old-fashioned,” Le said. “My dad’s words were, ‘Back in my day, people washed clothes after each wear.’”

After 15 months and one week, the time came to test the jeans. He enlisted the help of his professor, Rachel McQueen.

She and Le first swabbed the jeans before washing them. Then they washed the jeans and let him wear them for 13 more days, similar to a more normal amount of time between denim washes, and tested them again.

“There did not appear to be differences in the bacterial carriage depending on whether the jeans had been worn for 15 months or only 13 days,” McQueen’s findings read.

GAP jeans released a video this summer advocating the practice. However, it‘s reasoning wasn’t environmental:

Junkscience.com, however, may sum up Levi’s reasoning best: “So remember: clean clothes aren’t green.”

      I wonder if these highly intelligent youth’s have taken into considering the pollution that comes from using electricity to operate freezers, or the pollution that comes from the machinery to make jeans or the pollution that comes from the manufacturing of dyes?       I just find it amazing that I can catch a 47 inch Musky out of the Ohio river that has lived in that “Oh so nasty water” for all those years, and it grew to 47 inches. Isn’t that weird. And how about all the deer that live for years and years? They must be drinking bottled water, that must be.

      AMEN! But adding this – my son worked for a Mall in the freight unloading dept a few years ago, and told me then if I knew what he knew, I’d never buy another Levi product. He never would explain, and we’ve talked some pretty harsh subjects in the past – but to this day, he won’t explain. And Levi has run more than TWO bizarre ads since he worked for that mall.
      Anyway, he has NEVER come close to saying anything resembling that about any other company, ever.

      I just find it to be so amazing that all the wildlife can live oh so many years in this disgusting environment we live in and live to be so old. By their definitions I shouldn’t even be alive considering I drank gallons and gallons of water for most of my youth from a creek that flowed between miles and miles of cornfields, and surely their must have been pesticide run-off. I know, that must be why I’m so stupid.

      The 11$ cheapies from Fleet-Farm store are just as good, just as blue, I save $$$ and don’t have to have my money fund garbage. Nothing worse than finding out you are funding something you are completely against, through some choice-less proxy means.

      Put Levi’s in the same catagory as Ben & jerry’s, and Subaru. They can keep their socialist-activist BS, and I’ll keep my money.

      Isn‘t it amazing that when the environmental wacko’s get started, they try to ration things that are not in short supply?

      If you have very little water in your area then this may make sense. Otherwise, it is a waste of effort.

      There are fears of “water shortages due to climate change” yet they have been saying that global warming is melting the ice caps and it could flood the earth. So which is it? Are we losing or gaining water? Im confused lol

      Freezing jeans or anything else takes energy. We burn lots of coal to produce electrity for those freezers. Maybe Levis can suggest getting another freezer in your home just to use as a clothes freezing locker. Boy, that will cause energy to really skyrocket and the environment they are trying to protect to get even more fouled up!

      ATECHGEEK – Just ordered a pair for my husband for Christmas (or sooner if he needs). :)

      I let him know about a month or two ago that we cannot buy Levi‘s any more and he didn’t say much more than ‘You’re kidding me’. That is all he‘s worn for as long as I’ve known him. I hope he will like these Texas jeans. I trust they are ‘tough’.

      I gave up wearing jeans altogether about 15 years ago. I wear cargo pants with the side pockets. Sitting on a wallet year after year pushes your hip out of place and cause back problems. This might be why so many people have bad backs.
      As for the freezing… soap and water for me AND my clothes.

      Why on earth does Levi’s want me to contaminate my freezer with dirty clothes?

      Okay kiddo’s – History lesson on cleaning: When our ancestors colonized America (and probably before that) many had rugs on their floors. They had brooms, but no vacuum cleaners. Alas! Each winter they rolled up the rugs and hung them outside to FREEZE. Dirt has moisture in it. When the dirt would freeze, they would beat the rugs and off would fly the dirt with the ice. They swept the floors and brought the rugs back in and put them back down. (No water.)

      Fast Forward to 20th Century: I own many type of “jeans” and wash them weekly IN COLD WATER AND WOOLITE or any good cold water soap, of which I use very little because I also add baking soda to the wash water. In the winter I very rarely have to wash my jeans because I hang them on the clothesline and let them freeze. I then give them a good beating and off comes the dirt and ice crystals. WOW. I know a lot of you live in the south, but you can use your freezers.

      Our forefathers were pretty smart when it came to cleaning. I am probably old enough to be a mother to most of you on this site and have been doing this for more years than most of you have lived. WASTE NOT, WANT NOT (whether it is water you are talking about or anything else for that matter). I have not had to buy a pair of “jeans” for over 15 years.

      I‘ve worn Levi’s exclusively since I was 12, I’m now 58 and have purchased my last pair of Levis, switched from Chevy to Ford, bought Phillips light bulbs rather than GE, will not watch movies with liberal actors, do not watch ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, etc. I refuse to support them with my $’s. If you watch liberal TV networks they profit from advertising because of the number of viewers.

    Does anybody remember the short-lived fad in the early 70′s of taking an air shower instead of a normal water shower? It was were you stood in front of an open window and let the breeze blow the dirt off of you as opposed to using water to do it. I was a kid then but I remember thinking “that’s the stupidest thing I have ever heard of”

    Here we are in 2010 and the hits just keep coming day after day. It’s not progression folks, it’s regression.

I’m not $60 sure enough if Diamond Gusset will have the quality of Levis. They don’t tell the Denim weight of the boot cut…and they have ?stretch? in them….hmmmm.

      I have worn Diamond Gusset Jeans for years. Their store is here in Tennessee and they are made in Stone Mountain GA. They are the most comfortable and best wearing jeans you will ever wear. After you wear them you will never wear another jean. The fit is true to size not like those china made jeans where they make the waste smaller than the stated size. Try a pair you will never go back.

      I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I think that the Blaze ought to enlist the help of some selected qualified readers (we can send resumes if they want) and give us a special email address to write to with typos and such. It wouldn’t cost them a thing, it would help them look better and those of us frustrated by the plethora of mistakes here would at least feel as though we could do something about the problem.

    back in the day, a pair of levi’s would last damn near forever. starting in the lat 80′s, th material became inferior, and the jeans would fall apart in about a year. i took back a box of nearly new levi’s in 1996 to the center outside of las vegas where they distributed them through, and asked for compensation due to the ripped seams, lost buttons, holes in the thighs, etc. 1 week later a box arrived from levi’s, and i thought they did the right thing and replace the expensive, inferior product. all the jeans i gave them were in the box, with a note that this was normal wear. that ws the last time i put any money in the crap known as levi’s jeans. garbage made by ignorant progressive fools.

      OK, made in Sri Lanka, Napal, Katmandu, anywhere where a laboring family can live on $3 a day, because if they were made here in a union shop, they’d cost $150. So now we have to buy 3 cheap pairs for $25, that last as long as one classicly American made pair (hypothetically) at $150.

    Levis should be renamed ‘freaks r us’…..if the globe is getting warmer wouldn’t that increase the water? melting polar ice caps? creating more water? we should be able to wash our clothes as much as we would like then….the world has gone nutz-where the ridiculous, lies, and insanity are portrayed and accepted as real, factual, and sane while those shouting on the roof tops the truth are demonized and ridiculed as haters and lies….stop the world-I want to get off.

    Two things now I will be giving up. Coca (save the polar bears) Cola and Levis. I already switched to Diet RC to get away from aspartame, now I guess I’ll switch to Wranglers.

    So how much harder does this make your freezer have to work which uses more electricity, which uses more coal/oil/nuclear, which raises your electric bill, which has other unintended consequences, etc, etc, etc.

    Get real and come back to sanity and common sense.

      There is NO shortage of water on the Earth.

      With the exception of water carried into space for space missions, every drop of water that has ever been on the planet is still here!!

      The Earth is a closed system. Water does not disappear from the Earth.

      Oh, and 70% of the Earth is covered in water (and that is just the top of it).

      Just another example of the ******* inability to critically think.

    I must be dense but this sentence has confused me. Is it implying that some or most or everyone but me normally wears a single pair of jeans for two weeks give, or take a couple a days, before washing them, or that they are worn maybe for a couple of days, then thrown in the hamper where they await to be washed?

      I did just that when the Blaze posted the last article on Levi Strauss. I have wore Levi Jeans exclusively all my life. I live in Fl. and I usually only own 2-3 pair at a time as I mostly wear shorts. As luck would have it I was due to buy a couple new pair when the last article came out and I bought Wranglers. I like them. Bye-bye Levis…
