Union Under Fire for Using Oklahoma City Bombing in Political Ad

An Oklahoma state senator is condemning a firefighter union for its new “horrific and tasteless” advertisement which uses images of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing to fight against a bill that would change contract negotiation regulations.

The International Association of Firefighters began airing its new ad campaign Thursday, urging the public to oppose Senate Bill 826, a measure that would amend rules governing public union collective bargaining disputes. However, public outcry may already be forcing the union to pull the ad from the airwaves.

Several images of firefighters are used in the commercial, including a short clip of the remnants of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building after it was bombed in a domestic terrorist attack on April 19, 1995. When the image of the bombed Murrah Federal Building is shown, a narrator says: “We’re there when you need us. Now we need you. Tell politicians to do what’s right: Oppose SB 826 and support Oklahoma’s firefighters.”

“The AFL-CIO and the IAFF should be ashamed of this horrific and tasteless commercial,” said Sen. David Holt, a Republican from Oklahoma City. “The victims and heroes of April 19th are not political pawns to be exploited whenever the Legislature seeks to reform a union negotiating process.”

Sen. Holt, a sponsor of SB 826, is also a trustee for the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum and has asked the union to stop running the commercial.

The Oklahoman reports:

SB 826, by Holt, has passed the Senate and is awaiting a hearing in the House. It makes changes to binding arbitration, a process used to settle collective bargaining disputes between cities and public safety labor unions.

The bill has the support of dozens of mayors, city council members and city managers, as well as the state police union.

But the firefighter union opposes the bill, saying nothing is wrong with binding arbitration and it shouldn’t be changed.

Holt has argued that the current binding arbitration process is unfair to taxpayers because it often results in an out-of-state arbitrator deciding how to handle collective bargaining disputes that can involve millions of dollars of taxpayer money.

Among the proposals in his bill is giving preference to Oklahoma arbitrators if arbitration is needed. Holt worked on the bill with firefighter union lobbyists, but they couldn’t come to an agreement.

An International Association of Firefighters spokesman said today he had not heard Holt’s criticism and would review it before commenting.

The message that “Union’s” are opposing Collective Barganing is not correct. PUBLIC sector Unions are opposing changes to THEIR Collective Barganing changes.Private Company Unions should keep away from this disagreement otherwise risk their ability to operate separate of Government and taxpayers. Public Employee Unions are the economic stranglehold on cost for taxpayers. The US Government as well as Local Municipalities must abide by collective organizing for wage and work conditions but as a legal duty, and not deny the right of the individual or group of employee’s greivances . It must be made clear to the public at large that Unions strength/power is dependent on dues it collects from its members. Public Employee’s are recycling public dollars from Union Organizers to Union Lobbyist to Union Politicians on the doll, thereby creating a lobsided balance of power WITHIN Government. Every collective barganing agreement has within its contract a “security clause” which mandates union dues from members, agree or not, my money would stay in my pocket, but the unions have the power to deny me my job because I won’t pay dues. Individual choice is a right. Individual freedom to chose is must.

I’m guessing that Firefighters become Firefighters because they have an interest in serving the Public – not because they want to “work the system” for an early retirement with a large pension, to go on to another “public service job” with another large pension – but maybe I’m wrong.

Firefighters you have won admiration, but you are now tearing down a lot of the respect by how you behaved in Wisconsin and now in Oklahoma. You are blessed greatly by the pay you get and the early retirements, it is beginning to look like you don’t serve out of being just proud you are firemen who are called out to risk your life but you are beginning to become like the thugs that the union calls out. Go back to being respected and stay away from the mafia unions that want to control you.

Fear mongering, in your face, over your head, behind your back, and watch your back tactics are seasoned trade marks of unions. Expect it, reject it and pray against it and expose it to the light at every opportunity. These stunts are nothing new in the UNION playbook. I still would like to know “Where’s Johnny?”

I think it is all of the reasons you stated, plus one more. Unions use fear as a tactic to control the rank and file. Some of the earlier posts talked about a fireman son who was being ostracized by the other firemen for not protesting alongside them, or the construction worker who can’t get jobs if he pushes back at his union bosses. The unions place their boot on the necks of anyone who dares to question what they are doing. And that is why these unions have to be reined in. What happened in Wisconsin is just the beginning of the end for unions and they know it. Their mistreatment of fellow human beings just to gain more power has to stop.

Since all the hoo – haa with the unions, he’s been asked to join the protests for their union brothers & sisters. When he refused, they black balled him. Nobody in his station wants to be his work partner. No one will associate with him. So much for union brotherhood. He’s now ready to quit & go volunteer fire fighter. It seems all things evil & wrong is made of a well forged chain. From our commader in debt right down to the peon on the street. If we break just one link, I think we can possibly start to bring our country back to what it once was. A good, safe place to live, work & play. After reading an earlier article on sharia law in Florida, I no longer feel safe in my own country & I don’t like it at all. I want my country back!!!

I was in Civil Eng. in the Air Force, the Firefighters were in our squadron and I did get a chance to go train with them. One of the drills is putting on the full gear, air tank, and go into a smoke filled building to drag out a 120lb dummy. I was in marathon running shape, worked out like a mad man, and that was the most demanding, frightening experience, a dark, hot building and you had to find a person and drag them out.
That was during a training event, I was completetly wiped out after finding the dummy, in 12 minutes, and dragging it out. I couldn’t imagine doing that in a live event, a persons life hangs in the balance, and you have fire all around you.
It takes a special person to do that, and a very special person to dedicate their life doing that.
      Kudos to Firefighters and Police.

    Look for– the union label.

The rank and file useful idiots pledges allegiance to the very people who have helped to send their jobs off-shore w/ their never ending incessant demands.
Public service unions are not accountable to the tax-payers who are their bosses.
Just what kind of job can one get where he/she is not accountable to the bosses/owners.
    That must be sweeeet.
These people have nothing but disdain for the people who are their bosses. The taxpayers. Instead, their loyalties lies w/ their bosses/massa who runs their protection racket.
I am tired of hearing about the risks?
You think persons delivering pizzas are not at risk?. I hear time and again of these people getting holed up and killed.
You think store clerks working at stores late at night are not at risk. I hear of some of them getting killed nearly every day by criminals
You think everyone of us heading out to our jobs everyday are not at risk?
Risks comes in all forms. A drunken driver may kill som of us on our way to work.A dope-head behind the wheel may kill some of us. This happens daily somewhere across the country
Most people don’t have the retirement and health benefits of these public service workers
If you think the risks are too great, don’t be a fireman or policeman. It‘s not like you don’t know about the risk when you took the job.
It’s not everyday a policeman gets in a shootout.
It’s not everyday a fireman has to put out a fire in a 20 story building.
It’s not everyday the average person working in a store gets held up and/or killed.
You want top see heroes. See our troops trying to make a beter world for the less fortunate andgetting shot at on a constant basis, getting maimed and killed by the thousands . And they don’t have the benefits that our public service workers does.
They volunteered for this job.. Just like public service employees volunteered to take their jobs.

Everyday is a risk for everyone alive. Life has no guarantees.

So just keep blogging and go to work at 10 am tomorrow and get your supervisor coffee and please be carefull walking in your rockports to the fax machine it could be real dangerous. @ CAPTAIN CRUNCH

I understand your delimma. I assume that you live in a state where union membership is almost manditory, a closed shop state. No union membership, no work. Unfortunately, the leadership of your union, not you, are using your dues and counting your membership to promote the far left agenda and try to destroy free enterprise and thought in America. This is the same tactics used by Marx, Lennin, Hitley, Castro, Mao Tse Tung and a host of other dictators across the world.

I suggest that you work for and donate to politicians who will support RIGHT TO WORK LEGISLATION in your state. Union membership should be VOLUNTARY and no one should be denied work just because they don’t want to join a union. Remember, the union dues being extorted from you is YOUR money and YOU should be the one to decide how you will spend it.

I second what Starman70 said. It’s criminal, really, that you have to toe their line or you get no work. To me, that’s extortion – ‘give us your dues and maybe we’ll get you some work so you can feed your family’. Sounds more like a protection racket than a union. Maybe you could try to band together with some other co-workers who feel the same way? There’s safety in numbers.

IAFF can go to hell. If they do not like the fact we Okies want to keep the decision making left here in Oklahoma by not bringing in an out of state arbitrator then they can all quit. I’m positive there a many many many who will step up and do the job and more then likely not with a stupid union as Oklahoma is a right to work state thank God.  Using the OKC bombing images shows just how classy these union thieves are. The IAFF doesn’t support the bill but the state FOP does. Embarrassment to our great state and these public servants should be ashamed of themselves and I’m positive will be told about it by us.

@okie, we don’t think poorly of the people of Oklahoma. The unions are gasping their last breaths, and they are doing some HORRIBLE things. Here in Wisconsin we are having our own temper tantrums from the unions. The rank and file is livid. They don’t buy into this crap, I hold them partially responsible for allowing it to continue, but they have been lied to for so long…..

      @338LAPUA

We Okies are grateful for your kind words. I am very disappointed to see Firefighters (IAFF) are not doing their own research and are walking drones. I have questioned several today and none can explain why they don‘t like the bill without making up stuff that isn’t in the bill. Unions may be the liar but the firefighters (IAFF) are the ones believing it and are responsible for what they believe. Luckily, OK being a right to work state we have less unions then most and hopefully non union workers will replace those paying for a job.

Does not surprise me that they would use such a tragedy to push their agenda. Unions/socialists really have no sense of fair play, decency, or compassion for others. If they played fair, they know they could not win; hence the dirty tricks and vicious attacks on those who get in their way. They also tend to be cowards, so they will back off if enough decent people push back at them.

They are showing how deeply dishonest and political extortionist they can be, pushing lawmakers based on a terrible picture.

Whether they know it or not, they are on the side of the musllims. Using terrorism as a union political tool will align them in the minds of Americans with terrorists.

Are we surprised that the union thugs would do something like this? I respect and think highly of firefighters but when it comes to unions and their thuggery, some of these people lose all integrity for the sake of their mighty and all-powerful god their union masters. It’s like they lose all sense of right and wrong. Well, all firefighters rise up and overthrow your masters and cast them out of your lives.

The unions say that rules against collective barganing are going to hurt the middle class. Who do the unions think pay for all of the increases that they get thruough collective barganing-the middle class. Collective barganing is hurting the middle class.
