University of North Dakota Prepares to Ditch Fighting Sioux Logo

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Duke without the Blue Devil? Notre Dame without the Fighting Irish? Most students and alumni at those proud universities wouldn’t dream of dropping those enduring symbols of school pride.
But that‘s exactly what’s happening at the University of North Dakota, where the state’s flagship school is undergoing a mandatory facelift after the NCAA concluded the 80-year-old Fighting Sioux nickname was hostile and abusive.
North Dakota was the nation’s last college to challenge an NCAA edict against American Indian mascots and images. But eventually, an NCAA lawsuit forced the school to reconsider, and the state Board of Higher Education said it would retire the nickname if the school didn’t obtain permission from the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux tribes. Spirit Lake endorsed the nickname; Standing Rock did not.
So by next August, most vestiges of the nickname — logos on letterheads, Indian heads on walls and windows, even food items on menus — must be erased, removed, power-washed or painted over. School officials say they will take their time in finding a new nickname and logo.
“I would say a majority of students just assumed this day wasn’t going to come,” said Casey Hayden, a UND senior from Cottage Grove, Minn. “There are a lot of hurt feelings over it, but it’s pointless to blame anyone and important to move forward.”
The agreement with the NCAA says the school can keep historical items related to the nickname and items embedded in the architecture. While college and community representatives continue to sort out what fits that definition, it’s clear that a number of scholarships, clubs and events will need new identities.
It won’t be simple. There’s the Sioux Award, Spirit of Sioux Award, Fighting Sioux Club, Sioux Boosters, Sioux-Per-Swing, Sioux-Per-Burger, Fighting Sioux ROTC Battalion, Sioux Laundry, Sioux Fan Fest, Sioux Crew, Sioux Amateur Radio, Sioux Kids Club, Sioux Strong and Soaring Sioux.
Just to name a few.
“I didn’t know we had the Soaring Sioux,” said UND Indian studies professor Birgit Hans, a member of a committee helping with the transition. She was told it was a hot air balloon club.
School officials believe it should be relatively cheap and painless to remove most references to the logo on campus, which is not prominently displayed in most buildings. In some cases, a few coats of paint will do, such as a Fighting Sioux logo on the wall of the office of Lt. Col. Josh Sauls, head of the Fighting Sioux Army ROTC.
“We will make whatever adjustments need to be made,” Sauls said. “The Army is taking no sides in this issue and are behind the university 100 percent.”
But there are some exceptions, mostly in sports arenas.
The $100 million Ralph Engelstad Arena, a privately owned building where UND plays hockey, has thousands of Indian-head logos, including a 10-foot sketch of an Indian head embedded in the granite floor and brass medallions on the outside chairs of most rows.
Asked how many of the logos could be easily removed, arena manager Jody Hodgson said, “None.”
Although the agreement with the NCAA shows pictures of logos, trophies and banners that should remain intact, Hodgson said he’s still not clear on the final orders.
“At the time this settlement agreement was created, I don’t think anyone foresaw what was happening today, and that is transitioning away from the logo,” he said. “There’s still issues to be resolved there.”
The transition committee also is wrestling with its approach to private businesses that use the logo, including bars and restaurants that display banners and jerseys and those that use the name. One of the most popular eateries in town is the Big Sioux cafe, marked by an Indian statue near the entrance.
Bruce Smith and Kris Compton, who head the so-called Honoring History and Traditions Task Group, said they‘re hoping those establishments will follow the college’s lead. The group plans to meet twice a month, with the next session scheduled for Nov. 30.
The school has said on a website dedicated solely to the nickname issue that fans will be allowed to wear the popular Sioux gear — sales on the hockey jersey have increased for five straight years — on campus.
“However, eventually, as a new nickname and logo are adopted, we expect to see less and less of the Fighting Sioux branding,” the website says.
The university has set a June 30, 2011 deadline for retailers to sell off the last of their Sioux logo merchandise. Officials from a licensing company plan to canvass those merchants in July to make sure products are off the shelves — and officially become collector’s items.
“By the time that deadline rolls around, I think you will see people buying as much of that merchandise as possible,” Hayden said.
Some fans have opted for more permanent souvenirs.
Magoo Boyer, owner of Magoo’s Tattoos outside of Grand Forks, said he and his son, Kevin, have applied hundreds of Fighting Sioux tattoos over the last three decades. Interest dropped off during the nickname controversy — but none of their customers have shown buyer’s remorse.
“I’ve never had anyone come back to get a Sioux logo covered up,” Magoo said.

Posted on November 14, 2010 at 5:33pmI have been a proud supporter of the Fighting Sioux for many years. I believe the nickname is treated in a proud and respectful way. You may hear from an opponent’s fans an occasional “Sioux suck” or something to that effect, but who hasn’t said “Gophers suck” or “Badgers suck”. I haven’t heard PETA complain about that, yet. Why isn’t the Fighting Irish hostile or abusive? Have the Irish given their permission. Maybe if people would get a little thicker skin and grow a pair they wouldn’t be so offended. I think that if the Standing Rock Sioux people would be allowed to vote, they too, like the Spirit Lake Sioux, would overwhelming approve of UND’s continued use of the nickname. But, the Standing Rock Tribal Council will not allow the people to be heard.

Posted on November 14, 2010 at 5:09pmFor readers here, I disagree with this type of political correctness. Most of my peoples do not care diddly-squat about this “tribal name” issue. This is interesting one tribe supports use of this “Sioux” name and another tribe does not support this. Overall, a majority of Indians simply do not care, not even interested in issues like this.
Nonetheless, I do see both points of view and respect both points of view. My peoples do have pride and we do protect our own and protect what is ours. A tribal name is “ours” is every sense. This is understandable knowing of our past history, the genocide, broken treaties, racism and all that. I understand why some tribes object to their name being used without permission.
Without permission, this is a critically important notion.
Seems a bit silly but you need to develop a historical concept and develop a cultural concept to better understand this issue. This is not an “Al Sharpton” moment, this runs much deeper.
I disagree with the Standing Rock tribe on this issue, but all of us are to display respect for their concerns. This is America, this tribe is to be afforded the same respect and rights as all Americans.
This university should change their logo to “Fighting Jesus Disciples”. Doubtful any would complain about this, yes?

Posted on November 14, 2010 at 9:35pmHello my friend,
Yes, if they changed the name to “Fighting Jesus Disciples”, Immediately the ACLU would file suit against the N. D. State University for promoting religion. The PC crowd would descend on the campus like a bunch of flies on fresh poop. The ultra liberal 9th Circuit Court would file an injunction to halt the name change. As the king of Siam said,” ETCETERA, ETCETERA, ETCETERA”
I am German, English by descent so I cannot really place myself in the position of judging Native American feelings. Personally, if I were a member of the Sioux Nation, I would be honored to have a state university think so highly of my heritage that they would use my nation‘s name as the school’s mascot.
You do, however, have aa valid point. Although the name has been used for many years, the university should meet with tribal leaders and only continue using the name if it were agreeable with the Sioux Nation. This should be a joint effort between both entities and the PC crowd in Washington or any other group of ignoramii should keep their noses out of it.
Somewhere, maybe even in one of your posts, someone commented that they thought that this is part of a concerted action by the lefty libs to erase all individual identies and make us all just one group. Well, we all individuals and should retain our heritages good, bad or otherwise. We are all GOD‘s children and he didn’t make us all the same. He gave us individuality both in person and in culture. He didn’t want mindless robots following him like puppy dogs, he gave us the knowledge to follow him or not. Thanks be to GOD!

STARMAN is frustrated, “…changed the name to ‘Fighting Jesus Disciples’, Immediately the ACLU would file suit….”
Yep. This psychotic political correctness we suffer today places all of us in a no-win situation. Virtually anything we do, say or write is subject to rules of political correctness. The most devastating aspect of political correctness is this is simply censorship of both actions and words.
“Politically Correct” is simply a fancy word for “Censored”.
We are all so brainwashed by political correctness even Tea Party conservatives practice political correctness and are unaware of this. This political correctness really annoys me and I am not free of political correctness. I am an English professor. Inherently my vocabulary is exceptionally large. I frequently find myself wondering if I should use a certain word or not, then I catch myself thinking politically correct and I become angry with myself. There are thousands and thousands of words we are not to use. This ****** me off.
STARMAN is a diplomat, “the university should meet with tribal leaders and only continue using the name if it were agreeable with the Sioux Nation.”
No truer words. This is between some Sioux and the university. I am certain an agreement could have been worked out if the university spoke directly with tribes, on tribal lands.
You comment about “outsiders” being involved and to “keep their noses out of it”. This is precisely why this turned into a mess. Those “outsiders” did not honor traditions of my peoples. This is a failure in diplomacy and certainly why one tribe said, “no”. My gut feeling is those “outsiders” said or did something which offended this tribe.
Nonetheless, as you write, no matter what team mascot name is used, some politically correct jerk will jump up and take to complaining. I thought to suggest “no name” for a team logo but then those who suffer amnesia would get all tight jawed about this. This is a no-win situation for all involved.
Best weapon against political correctness is blunt truth, which constantly has me in trouble!

I used to think that the religious police in Iran and Saudi Arabia were bad, but the pc police here are just as bad. What will they target next? Let’s see, will the Westboro Baptist Church attack USC since their name is also a condom brand name? How about the pc atheists going after Stanford and Providence whose nicknames are religious? How long before they go after the Utah Utes? Maybe the only pc name will be a color, oh, but that could be construed as racist. And to top it all off our “idiots” in Congress want to tell the NCAA how they should run the football bowl games. Maybe they will put the non outdoor expert, Bawney Fwank, it charge of that commission, too. Given their success with social security, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, financial reform, healthcare, I don’t think it looks too good for college football.

Posted on November 14, 2010 at 4:30pmHere we go again, carrying POLITICAL CORRECTNESS to the extreme again. As I write in my book, this American Indian is another of the Phoenician/Canaanite races of peoples. It is easily proven in my book. We, as the Tribe of Manasseh, which was to be the GREATEST SINGLE NATION ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH are having everything thrown against us now, and we are in a real battle for our Nation and our Republic. Because we have been exposed to so much DISTORTED HISTORY which has been crammed down our throats, we can’t remember who we are, let alone who the other races that live among us are. It’s a real shame that we have allowed historians to meddle with our ancient history for so long. Perhaps one day you will ask for my rewrite of distorted history, because it covers all of these subjects. We are entering troubled times, and we should be equipped with information, and knowledge, to help us maneuver through this mess.
Report Post »There is even prejudice among the American Indians. Traveling west on vacation with our family some years ago, we stopped at Little Big Horn in Wyoming. I went into the visitor’s center to buy some postcards and whatever else the children wanted. I struck up a conversation with the little Indian Crow girl that was working there. She told me about the area, answering all of my questions. Then she said, leaning into me and whispering, “Those Sioux, you can‘t trust ’em even now.” I was taken aback, because for the first time I realized that there is even prejudice among the Indian tribes.
I grew up among Indians in our area, and I don’t think we thought any differently about them then they thought about us.

Posted on November 14, 2010 at 8:05pmOK, Mary M. Tebbe, you earned this. Previously you write,
“American Indian is another of the Phoenician/Canaanite races of peoples.”
There is absolutely no truth to what you write. Additionally, what you write is racially tinged.
In the case of Phoneticians and Canaanites, Jews viewed those people as less than human, viewed those people as only worthy of being slaves for Jews. Biblical history has this the Jews allegedly slaughtered the Canaanites at the direction of God. This is racial genocide.
Genesis 9:18 – 27
“…Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren…Lord God of Shem, be Canaan his servant…in the tents of Shem, and Canaan be his servant.”
Genesis 24:3
“I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites….”
Deuteronomy 20:17
“But thou shalt utterly destroy them…the Canaanites…as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee”
Mary you also write,
“We, as the Tribe of Manasseh, which was to be the GREATEST SINGLE NATION ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH”
You are simply claiming superiority over other cultures. For this topic, you are specifically making a target of American Indians, and we are not descendants of Phoneticians and Canaanites. You are practicing deceit to masturbate your ego and to legitimize your racially tinged thinking.
You are claiming superiority over cultures based upon lineage and ancestry. This fits the very definition of racism.
Chances are good because I am an American Indian you assume I have never engaged in Bible study. Rather clear I am more than capable of using your Bible to defeat you.
I treated you with diplomacy, treated you firm but fair. I provided you with face saving space so not to create acrimony. You should have left well enough alone.
Nonetheless, I will not label you a racist but I will comment your thinking is racially tinged, and your thinking clearly involves deceit with an intent to fool readers.

Posted on November 15, 2010 at 2:30amH2O BOARD THEM is curious yellow, “what book does she keep talking about?”
No clue. Appears to have something to do with American Indians originating from the general Palestine region, Sodom and Gomorrah basically, although other regions are included in the Canaan lands of old.
Genesis 10:19-20
“… border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha.”
Canaan lands were said to be rich and fertile with flowing rivers, the land of Milk and Honey. During the time period, early Jewish tribes lived out on a God forsaken desert. This might have something to do with why those Jewish tribes slaughtered the peoples of Canaan and seized their lands, much like Christians did to American Indians.
The Manasseh peoples who are one of the lost Jewish tribes. This “book” of Mary seems to have something to do with those Manasseh folks being a superior race. I am confident the Manasseh folks were not blond headed and blue of eye.
The Manasseh are most famous for David who tangled with a big boy named Goliath over in the Canaan area.
Deuteronomy 3:11 describes the bed of Goliath as 6 feet wide and 14 feet long.
Chronicles 20:6-7 informs us Goliath had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot. No mention on the size of his manhood junk nor how many. Probably big, maybe two of those puppies.
Samuel 17:48 gives credit to David for slaying Goliath. Samuel 21:19 gives credit to Elhanan for slaying David. Who knows?
More interesting is those early lost tribes of Israel collected foreskins from their enemies killed in battle. I understand the foreskin of Goliath was used to make a tent for David and his harem.
Anyhow, my peoples are not descendants of those party loving folks of Sodom and Gomorrah, nor is there a superior race of man as Mary claims to “prove” in her book.
Rather fun to use Biblical quotes to beat Christians at their own game.

I think those things to be bad magic.
Listen girl friend, dump your tin foil hat and come on over with me. I have an inside connection with the DNC. I can get you good job, a rewarding job. Chances are good, for a white girl like you, I can have the governor also toss in an endless supply of C size batteries and a vibrating magic stick thing which will delight you to no end. Working for the DNC will save you money, as well; you won’t have to keep buying rolls of tin foil for those hats of yours.

Posted on November 15, 2010 at 2:10pmHUGH WILLIAMS giggles and farts, “Girl I love your post!!! All the people that don’t understand your post always make me laugh.”
What coincidence! My husband is always laughing at me! But not as much as our girl, “Momma, you are a crazy injun but I love you. Now sit down and shut-up.”
A good method of learning is to poke fun at our human nature. We humans are about the most comical creatures on Mother Nature’s green earth. Finding humor in our behaviors also has us finding truth about ourselves. This truth is easier on the mind if you are laughing.
Will Rogers and Mark Twain are amongst the greatest of humorists. I aspire to reach their level of understanding human nature. Those boys enjoyed a natural talent for spotting how silly we are. Those boys were also wise men. I admire them.
Hugh is interested, “I thought Indian Reservations were sovereign land and not governed by US law.”
Can of worms there, Hugh. The feds claim us to be of sovereign nations. However, my peoples suffer more federal regulations and laws than mainstream America. The feds are actively working at keeping American Indians suppressed and under control.
A classic example, Hugh, is the feds will not allow Indians to enforce laws on our lands above a misdemeanor level, and the feds refuse to enforce felony level laws on our lands. The feds have effectively rendered our lands into lawless lands. One of many results of this is Mexican drug cartels invading our lands. Indians are too few to fight back, and Indians cannot arrest and prosecute drug smugglers and human traffickers on our lands. We do kill them, though.
Hugh, another example is our casinos. Indians are not allowed to open casinos nor any other business without permission of state and federal government. There is no free market enterprise on Indian lands because of federal regulations. Purpose of this is to afford states and the feds an ability to impose taxes. Government red tape prevents opening new businesses for years, many businesses on our lands can never open because of federal regulations.
I could write for hours on this topic, Hugh. Bottom line is the Bureau of Land Management and the Bureau of Indian Affairs have complete authority over what Indians may or may not do on reservations. Almost always this proves, “You may not do this.” Government cubicle office workers decide our fate. This is like you placing a Department of Motor Vehicles in charge of your life.
Feds claim us to be sovereign nations. Reality is Indians suffer infinitely more rules, regulations and laws than does mainstream America. We are regulated into subjugation. In essence, Hugh, American Indians live under a fascist regime you folks know as our federal government.
To close off, American Indians suffer the shortest life span, highest infant mortality rate, the worst poverty and the highest unemployment rate, all because of federal regulations. Americans think of us Indians as a free peoples. We are anything but free.
Hugh concludes, “Keep poking maybe it will make a few minds open and actually start to think.”
Ha! I always have my sharp pig poking stick in hand! Don’t think I will never poke at you, my friend. I will be gentle with you.

Hey, for a New York girl you have your sultry southern girl accent down pat! You sound just like me, right before I whop you upside your head with a pig poking stick, “Daahhhhling, come closer….”
kasheho? Now I am an old coyote? I will remind you, girlfriend, you are my elder!
SORAYA lectures me, “You sure are having a wampum good time batting your prey around. Haven’t I told you to play nice?”
I am playing nice, momma! You don’t see any black eyes, no dead bodies nor do you hear beer bottles busting over heads or six shooter shots being fired. Couple more weeks, this will change.
Say, you remember when we were in a barroom brawl down in Del Rio, Texas, and I ripped my T-shirt off, wolf whistled then jiggled my bare breasts to get those cowboys under control? What a night! Told you I would fix you up with an Indian brave stud, and oh what a stud!
Well, I have not yet taken the Blaze to my usual barroom brawl level. People around here are timid.
SORAYA eyeballs my backside, “…Taha loves nothing more than to engage you all in a debate. She will wind you up in a trap of ink and trickery, much tail chasing will ensue.”
Hey! My tail is worth chasing after! You know this. Why just yesterday this boy Hugh up there got to chasing after my tail and, well, hmm, if the boys around here knew about my tail, they would be wagging their tails, tongues flopping, drool dripping and their eyes would be bugging out like bullfrogs. Some of the girls around here might take to acting the same.
SORAYA, I seek your advise on this. Should I advise readers here the two of us are bisexual?
SORAYA looks to the horizon, “Go ahead tell her the earth is flat, she is sure to come up with a good explanation of why it is round.”
Darn it! I’ve told you a thousand times the earth is flat. You are Catholic, your Pope told you the earth is flat. Now knock off your round earth nonsense before the Pope treats you like the Church of England treated Issac Newton. Blasphemy! Our earth is flat! Off with your head!
SORAYA closes, “I’ll just grab some popcorn and watch.”
Tsk, tsk, Michelle Obama will wag a finger and lecture you on eating fatty foods! You are risking making Michelle mad enough to sit on you and squash you like a bug.
“nashoba holba kasheho”, I am not an old coyote, darn it! I am a young, sleek, slim, beautiful coyote whose tail boys love to watch wiggle, and some girls too, like you.
I have another batch of nude photos of my cowboy husband ready for you. I will email shortly, and you know those photos will be anything but shortly.

Posted on November 15, 2010 at 7:07pmHUGH WILLIAMS, I am enjoying a lucid moment here. Plum tuckered out, been chainsawing firewood most of the afternoon. I will afford you an opportunity to “see” through eyes of an Indian.
From this specific blog I selected a participant comment:
——
“Whenever it becomes legal to chase and apprehend a fleeing indian suspect onto a reservation then that’s when they should consider anything indians have to say. If we have no jurisdiction on their land; they have none on ours.”
——
With our previous dialog about reservation police only allowed to prosecute misdemeanor level crimes, no felony crimes, you can begin to understand how ludicrous is this comment above. I will add to your vision on this.
During “hot pursuit” law enforcement from outside can enter our tribal lands to carry out their duty. Typically, a local sheriff works with tribal police, there is an unspoken agreement local police are welcome on tribal lands to help with law enforcement to compensate for the feds restricting tribal police to only misdemeanors. Outside law agencies can serve warrants on tribal lands. If a federal crime, the FBI handles this.
Contrasting, if a person, Indian or not, commits a “felony” offense on Indian lands, tribal police cannot touch this person, they must call in the FBI to deal with this. Currently, the FBI ignore about 60% of felony crime on Indian lands. In effect, the FBI refuses to enforce laws on Indians lands.
This boy up there comments “whites” have no jurisdiction on Indian lands and Indians do not have jurisdiction outside Indian lands. Hugh, with a bit of learning, you know this is ignorance being displayed; Indians have little jurisdiction on our lands and none outside our lands. The feds are, de facto, in charge of our Indian lands, almost complete authority.
Another example, for most Indian lands, not all, an Indian who owns a piece of reservation land cannot sell this land without federal permission. In many cases, “title” to Indian land belongs to the Bureau of Land Management. Indians live on those lands but the BLM owns those lands and the BLM absolutely controls what can be done or not done on those lands.
This notion of “sovereign” nations is completely bogus. We are citizens of an Indian nation, such as my Choctaw Nation, but often we do not own the very land under our feet. This sovereign notion applies to government relationships, this often does not apply to actual dirt. In this sense, Hugh, our “sovereignty” is on paper only, and this paper can be torn up whenever the feds take a liking. As you know, not a single treaty over centuries has been honored by the feds; they broke every treaty.
Next time you read writings about American Indians you will remember to ask yourself, “Is this actually true?” There is a lot of ignorance out there amongst white folks, very little of what they believe about Indians and write about Indians is true.
This brief discussion of mine will help you to better understand this frustration we Indians suffer on a literal daily basis. The feds, Barack Obama, will tell you “this” but truth is “that”. Our federal government has a policy of “propaganda” not only to misinform Americans about Indians but also to misinform Americans about almost everything. We cannot trust anything coming out of our government just as we cannot trust much of anything people say or write about Indians.
Speaking truth is the most critical of traditions amongst my peoples. We chase after truth with a fierceness. Now you better understand why we are known as “truth speakers”. This reason is just about everyone lies.
Develop a habit, Hugh, of being skeptical. You read a comment in a blog, regardless of topic, ask in your mind, “Is this actually true?”, then chase down truth. This is up to you, alone, to find truth.
Chasing after truth will have you beginning to think like an Indian and you will be a better person for this.

Boy howdy, a dozen dirty jokes leap into my lascivious mind instantly! I am really biting my tongue hard! If in our private place, you know what I would be writing. Here at the Blaze, people are way too uptight for jokes of this nature; telling those jokes would be messy.
SYLVIA SORAYA almost lets a secret slip off her forked tongue, “Not a one of those cowboys ever did tell what happened to them.”
Shoot, girl, those cowboys never knew what happened! Heck, I left half of them out cold on the sawdust floor and left the rest seeing stars! Whiskey bottles work so much better than easy breaking beer bottles.
SYLVIA SORAYA shoots for CYA, “I hope you remember that Good Christian Girl, me, managed to keep my shirt all buttoned up and proper.”
Yes, you did, but you took your jeans off, yes, ma’am, you surely did! I warned you to go easy on that Okie fruit jar white lightning.
For this topic of the University of Nebraska losing its “Sioux” sport logo, I am prompted to suggest “Blazing Boobs” for their team logo. Those sure enough stops the boys dead in their tracks, has them mesmerized long enough to whop them upside their heads with a stout whiskey bottle.
Might even earn an endorsement from Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder.
SYLVIA SORAYA anticipates her weekly photos of my cowboy, “As for photos of isuba nakni ilafia, you know I’ll avert my eyes.”
Uh huh, and I know to where you will avert your eyes! On this delightful isuba nakni ilafia, might be better we not discuss a handsome stallion here at the Blaze, this would also be messy, really messy. However, I might run our “Happy Horse Ranch” advertisement with the Blaze. I am sure this would not cause a ruckus amongst the sheeple found here.
Don’t you folks just love this when a cowgirl and an injun girl get together than take to swapping lies?
Sure more entertaining then sitting around reading people whine and cry about political correctness.

Okpulot Taha
Posted on November 16, 2010 at 12:03amHUGH WILLIAMS asks, “That is you name isn’t Okpulot Taha?”
You will break a jawbone if you try to enunciate my full name:
allusi tek yukpa okpulochi taha attahpi
crazy baby girl who laughed when born
An Indian name, Hugh, is a title to a story, a meaningful and long story. Our tradition is to be given a name or assume a name according to a major life event. You watched Kevin Costner in “Dances With Wolves” a great movie close to truth. You understand how an Indian name comes about.
This naming system comes about because our tongues are strictly oral, not written. We are story tellers which is how we pass along our history and our traditions. Our ceremonies, which you have enjoyed at times, are story telling sessions. There is no equal to this within Western languages; Anglos use written history books. Imagine, if you can, having thousands of years of history of your tribe in your mind. This is what we enjoy and this is part of why our thinking is so radically different. Our thinking processes spans thousands of years and more, compared to Westerners whose thinking processes typically only goes back to birth, maybe one or two generations before birth; grandparents through present day. My thought process predates Jesus Christ.
This plays a part in this “Sioux” name business. This tribal name goes way back and is revered much like you revere Jesus Christ. Mainstream America does not understand using a tribal name is like our using the name “Jesus Christ” for a mascot logo. Christians would not be happy if we Indians treated this name “Jesus Christ” lightly as if simply the name of a dog or a cat, a name of no value, just something silly. This is what Americans do not understand and this is the root cause of this University of North Dakota problem; lack of knowledge better known as ignorance.
This discussions of ours quickly informs of how complex of an issue this is, and how this would take months, even years, to begin to understand how Indians think. Westerners are shallow thinkers, Indians are deep thinkers. Mine is not an insult rather is a simple truth of a cultural difference.
Evidence of this, my friend Hugh, is found in differences in writing styles. My cultural background has me taught to be a story teller since birth. You read this in my comments here at the Blaze. Most participants write one, two, maybe three sentence comments. I write stories. I would not have this any other way, this is our American Indian tradition. My name is a title to a long and complex story. My comments around here are a short synopsis of larger and more complex stories.
“Taha” works just fine, Hugh. Had to change my name because I could not get a driver’s license, credit card, all that stuff, “Your name will not fit.” I suppose if you look around you will find my English version name, has a “Dr.” in front but don’t call me that! You will find me all over the internet dating back more than twenty years although I am only 28 and some odd months. I won’t divulge how many odd months.
Like you, Hugh, I am a real person, usually getting in your face over something when not telling lies.
