Iowa State University University Professor Rips Military, College Republicans in Letter | Thomas Walker

Iowa State University English lecturer Thomas Walker ignited a firestorm with a letter he wrote to the student newspaper Monday, slamming the military and the school's College Republicans. (Image source: iastate.edu)

A lecturer at Iowa State University sparked controversy this week when he slammed both the military and the school’s College Republicans in a letter to the Iowa State Daily student newspaper.

“Why do Republicans care so much about the military? Because the military-industrial complex is dear to their simplistic laissez-faire fantasies: a bottom-line patriotism that excludes the people at the bottom,” Thomas Walker wrote.

“Soldiers are to Republicans as fetuses are to them: prized. But once out of the womb-like army, Republican solicitude for hapless veterans goes where extracted zygotes go,” he said.

Walker, who teaches English, was mocking a recent drive by the College Republicans to collect items to send to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan for holiday care packages. He slammed those efforts, writing: “Donating toiletries, boxed and canned foods, socks and beanies to U.S. soldiers who can already deodorize themselves, who eat better than the poorest Americans and who are gallantly garbed, is an eleemosynary travesty.”

Instead, he said, “Necessities should be doled out to people who really need them and who might get them if not for the hundreds of billions of dollars being funneled to the Pentagon in the greatest squandering of money on the planet.”

Walker’s letter, published Monday, triggered a flurry of outrage on campus, as well as a series of responses in the student newspaper. The university’s board of regents termed it “fairly offensive” in addressing the matter Thursday.

“I, along with many Iowans, was offended and disgusted by the unfortunate and highly inappropriate remarks made against our soldiers in uniform,” Regent President Pro-Tem Bruce Rastetter said, according to the Iowa Gazette. “Not only did Mr. Walker insult our sons and daughters in uniform — he also questioned the kind and humanitarian efforts made by our students to ensure that our soldiers know we care about them and are exceedingly grateful for their service.”

Kyle Bitterman, a senior and a member of the Army ROTC, told the regents that as a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan, he knows how much care packages like the ones the College Republicans were sending can mean to soldiers overseas. He said ROTC members were shocked by the letter, but know the rest of the university does not share Walker’s opinion.

“We have a great amount of support here from the university as a whole,” he said.

Bitterman added that ROTC members would not support any disciplinary action against Walker for expressing his views.

Iowa State president Gregory Geoffroy said he was very disappointed Walker chose to write such a letter, and that the views expressed in no way represent the school.

Iowa State University hosted a GOP presidential debate in August ahead of the closely-watched Ames Iowa Straw Poll.

This man has the right to spew his hatred only because our military upholds our constitutional freedoms. If it wasn’t for our military, who has fought and died for America and her constitution, this man wouldn’t have the right to Free Speech. I wonder if he’s ever considered that.

Let’s see, Wilson was the president who got us into WWI. Wilson was not Republican. FDR was the president who got us into WWII. FDR was not a Republican. Truman is the one who got us into, our first not allowed to win, Korean War. Truman was not a Republican. Kennedy was the first to send combat troops into, our second not allowed to win, Vietnam War. Neither Kennedy and the man who escalated that war not to win, Johnson, were Republicans.
Seems to me that Democrats love the military industrial complex, no?

This professor, if you can even call him that, is so out of touch with reality but not a surprise since most academics are as far left as you can go. Why do you think we have a bunch of useful idiots who have graduated from colleges and universities who still don’t know history of anything but have been indoctrinated in “leftist theology”—sit down and talk with a college student and you will be shocked how totally illiterat they truly are, but they have a degree—guess we could call it a degree in “unreality”!

This man is right…think about it.If republicans really cared about our soldiers would they have them dying in endless wars? Oh i know nazicons…your quick to say that they ate dying for freedom..sorry to tell you the truth about it..THEY ARE DYING FOR CORPORATIONS…But you have the right to believe the gov propaganda..Secondly if they really care about our veterans ( my dad is a vietnam vet) why dont they really honor them once they come home? Our dear veterans are all but forgotten in our country…it is disgusting and sick..This is what i believe All VETERANS DESERVE! Free healthcare that is not substandard, they should get the same kind our worthless politicians have given themselves, their income should be tax free period! They should get loans for houses at 0% interest, they should get FREE college tuition with no strings attached and their Social Security should be doubled! That would be a good start to really honoring them…yet these corrupt politicians pat themselves on the back like they are the heroes, just like when the stupid media said “ gabrielle giffords took a bullet for her country” …What a stinking joke! That saying is reserved for our dear soldiers!

I agree that our returning vets are not taken care of as they should be. Perhaps we should cut the welfare programs by say 50% and allocate this money for our vets; abolish the department of education and this money also for our vets. After our vets have been taken care of the money left over should be used to pay down our debt.
Of course our (ahem) educators will have to take a pay cut or get a better job in the private sector as so many of them boast they can easily do. Our deserving folks on welfare will have to forgo the large screen tv’s and new cars and all of the expensive junk food thrown in their grocery carts.
I am sure we can find some money elsewhere to further fund the care-taking of our HERO’S .

If it had taken another 6 to 12 months to declare war on Germany, would Britain have survived?

The guy is a total Moran and idiot . The problem with people like this is they have a college audience that has no idea of how life is in other nations or how our military live. I was in the gulf war (retired military) and I know the sacrifices made by military people on deployment. We do not always live a life of luxury overseas because many items that Americans Cherish are not available to the troops. Some of the troops have to eat MREs. When I was in a helo squad in Bahrain we received hundreds of packages marked for the ships at sea , that was the folks back home way of supporting us and lettin us know they were behind us and thinking of us. It is a huge moral booster for troops overseas to get these packages from back home in the states. something this jack a## fails to understand. I guess he had rather they take care of the welfare hoes that live off the government by spreadin legs all day and popin out babies for the rest of us to support? while they spend the money on drugs and booze, or I guess he wants us to collect food to send to the homes that the taxpayer is forced to upkeep for the poor people that will never ever find a job

Smackdown had a link to Wolfowitz, who served during the Bush I. Wolfowitz doctrine includes preemption. I believe in preemption. You don;t always wait for your enemies to gain strength before preparing or striking. You don’t always wait for your enemies to declare war on you 1st. if you always give your enemies the initiative, one day you will come out on the short end of the stick.

I gave an example of FDR preparing for WWII. I think that is valid.

Another example is the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Israel preemptively struck. Would Israel have suffered more or even won if they had waited for artillery shells to cross the international border?

Preemption is not a dirty word to me. You just have to make sure they are your enemy & you have a plan. Some enemies are undefeatable when they have their ducks all in a row & their resources have snowballed thru conquest or alliances.

& sometimes when you are being bullied by a group, you don’t always start with the biggest bully.

With Beck’s thing the military was indeed honored. In the other, these ungrateful lowlives left the WW2 Memorial with garbage of every kind! No appreciation for the ‘fallen’.

GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS – AND GOD BLESS AMERICA! I’m an Atheist but I will not argue the point. My objection comes is over the Republican love of the Military Industrial Complex and NOT the lack of respect for the men and women serving in our military. Over the last ten years the cost to the taxpayer for the Pentagon – it’s suppliers and manufacturers of military hardware – has MORE THAN DOUBLED – even while we haven’t paid for one penny of either of our current wars. “Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative” said President (General – Allied Supreme Commander during WW11) Dwight D. Eisenhower (R) and that “Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative”. He also reminded us that “Every gun that is made, every warship that is launched, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed and those who are cold and are not clothed.” Here was a man who followed the teachings of Jesus – and would NOT allow himself to be bought by lobbyists.

President Eisenhower WOULD NEVER have sent our troops to fight and die in a war of CHOICE. If we REALLY want to honor our troops we would reinstate the draft so that NOBODY could avoid service – and our government would think very seriously before sending our boys and girls to die in far away places simply because our leaders were promoting the wealth of the Military Industrial Complex!

To say “thank you,” I flew about a half dozen flags over Iraq on Sept. 11, 2007 and gave them to the groups and individuals who were at home, but a part of the fight that we brought to our enemies. To me these good students are providing a hand-up to the best Americans we know, who are in the struggle of their lives. To the professor, I hope he enjoys his Prius, his Birkenstocks and his cushy tenure in academia.

Sorry, poor post. I dislike laptops with a touch pad. What I meant to say was that the people who cared enough to send us a package provided us with morale, emotional support and hope that we could come back to the greatest place on Earth…the United States of America. Sorry, somehow my computer deleted a large portion of my post. (My last portion of that post wasn’t in so many words.)

Amen — and you forgot — a bad comb-over LOL

As a retired Navy officer, I sent out many care packages and got rave reviews. It made me feel good that I could say “Thank you” to the guys at the pointy end of the spear while I sat home in climate control, not having to worry abt if the chow wagon was going to pull up or eat a “bag nasty.”

At a large base with a PX, care packages are not necessary.

But in the 1st week in country they are a huge morale boost, especially when the Senator Leader (Reid) is saying the war is lost..

After the 1st week, they are still boost morale & are always appreciated.

Part of the strength of an army is morale. But what he know about morale or combat effectiveness, he is a bigot. He can only see through his narrow English professor glasses.

People studying military science study morale. They study how many casualties a unit, even an elite, can take before breaking. There are many other aspects to morale.

Of course dweeb professor has some inkling of what he says. It is why he says it. He is trying to break morale.

I love that the professor elucidates so well and has an expert command of punctuation, spelling and oratory. Beyond that—-he is a pompous ass. Gimme a break, buddy! Eleemosynary? Okay, you knows bigger words than we do….but we understand altruistic….but you just had to show you were smarter than us. Point made, you pompous, clueless person. And no, we do not forget our “zygotes” or veterans as our track records well point out. As Allen West aptly puts it…the only reason we are getting flack is because we are over the target! And speaking of abortion….that is exactly what you and your ilk are doing to the minds of our youth. We would like to kick your ass, Professor, but instead…and this will really tick you off…..we will pray for you!

It‘s really a shame that we can’t figure out a way to determine if a fetus is liberal or conservative, cause that would stop most problems before they even start. Too bad this price of crap wasn’t aborted. World would be infinitely better. I hope this guy gets rolled in some dark back ally someday, hope I’m there to kick him in his teeth, and crush his skull, man I’m sorry, liberalism makes me insane (sic). Natural assurance, that’s why our college students are so stupid also, Lina like this, have infiltrated schools across America, remove the teachers unions, unions should be outlawed, domestic terrorism! To he’ll with college professors! After they get what they deserve!!!!!

One wonders a about this professor. What qualifies him to make statements as he has? Who is he exactly. He teaches English. not Political Science, not Humanities, not military history, nothing that has to do with his statements. So people are taking his personal opinions to heart. My mother, in her wisdom has told me often, “Consider the source and let the water run” Might I suggest that his statement applies to this know-nothing professor.

What a hateful misguided man, who hides in a corner with his university elites. If God forbid we were attacked by our enemy, I‘m sure he would be the first to scream out for our military’s protection. What a spineless wimp!

You know, as tacky and distasteful as it would be, I would love to see the Left’s tactics used against them. I would love to see 1,000 patriotic Republicans camped on outside this loser’s house shouting “Traitors get out! Haters get out!” or some such theatre.

Our sense of decency and good manners will not serve us well forever. Someday we will have to get dirty down in the trenches.
