University Study Determines Fox News Has Least-Informed National Audience Based on These Questions

A May 5 study from Fairleigh Dickinson University is making news today after one of its findings seemingly indicated that Fox News has the least-informed national audience, while NPR has the best-informed.
The study even “determined” that many people who watch no news at all are more informed than those who watch Fox News, and, of course, people who watch the Daily Show are more informed than both of the above.
According to the report, a total of 1,185 individuals nationwide were asked what news sources they had utilized that week, and then were quizzed on a variety of domestic and international issues. The study took place between February 6 and 12, 2012.
The analysis explains:
The study concludes that media sources have a significant impact on the number of questions that people were able to answer correctly. The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly — a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all. On the other hand, if they listened only to NPR, they would be expected to answer 1.51 questions correctly; viewers of Sunday morning talk shows fare similarly well. And people watching only The Daily Show with Jon Stewart could answer about 1.42 questions correctly.
[...]
Results for questions about international current events were similar… [Emphasis added]
Less reported is the highly suspect methodology, which oversampled Republicans “to get a better estimate of the Republican voting process,” but also greatly increasing the Republican margin of error.
So what were some of the questions that Fox viewers apparently failed?
1) To the best of your knowledge, have the opposition groups protesting in Egypt been successful in removing Hosni Mubarak?
2) How about the opposition groups in Syria? Have they been successful in removing Bashar al-Assad?
3) Some countries in Europe are deeply in debt, and have had to be bailed out by other countries. To the best of your knowledge, which country has had to spend the most money to bail out European countries?
4) There have been increasing talks about economic sanctions against Iran. What are these sanctions supposed to do?
5) Which party has the most seats in the House of Representatives right now?
6) In December, House Republicans agreed to a short-term extension of a payroll tax cut, but only if President Obama agreed to do what? (Open-Ended)
7) It took a long time to get the final results of the Iowa caucuses for Republican candidates. In the end, who was declared the winner? (Open-Ended)
8) How about the New Hampshire Primary? Which Republican won that race? (Open-Ended)
9) According to the figures, about what percentage of Americans are currently unemployed? (Open-Ended)
How many did you answer correctly?
In all odds, the study is only gaining national notoriety because it fits the anti-Fox narrative of most of the media.
But does it really? MSNBC received similarly low scores, and their numbers were not oversampled. In fact, if this graph showing knowledge of domestic affairs is to be believed, the people who ended up the most misinformed were conservatives who made the mistake of watching MSNBC. The only people who ended up misinformed after watching Fox, on the other hand, were liberals:
UPDATE:
Fairleigh Dickinson isn’t the first university to conduct such a study. You may remember The Blaze’s story from 2010 about the University of Maryland’s similar report that found Fox News viewers were the most “misinformed.” You also may remember that one person who took the time to comb through it found it to be “bogus.”

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 10:23pmActually cause and effect are confused and confounded here. I think it’s only partly the case that FOX viewers are under informed because of FOX news content. There’s truth to that because Roger Ailes knows that sensational stories about those eight members of the New Black Panthers deserve lot of coverage, which reduces the amount of time spent discussing news that’s actually relevant. And in the National Enquirer vein, FOX spend a lot of time on the Kardashians or whatever tabloid news draws the viewers in. So yes, FOX doesn’t cover the news thoughtfully like NPR or other legitimate news sources. So there’s less legitimate news there.
But also, people turn to FOX to have their prejudices confirmed. That’s the other side of the coin and part of the genius of Ailes and Murdoch. FOX appeals to people who don’t want to hear about the gray, the subtle, the nuanced. FOX viewers want everything black and white, bad vs. good. FOX viewers go there, not to be informed, not to hear both sides of an issue, but only to hear their preconceived ideas confirmed.
So it’s both. FOX does little to give it’s audience a balanced view of the news, or give it’s audience a broad view of events in the world (events that don’t fit their narrative), and people go to FOX because they don’t want to think. They want to hear what they already believe and nothing else.

Posted on May 24, 2012 at 12:43amThe study was conducted incorrectly. The questioners asked about political affiliations and the major news source BEFORE they asked the questions. This could introduce bias into the sample from the person asking the question. Also, at least half of the study should have been conducted by an independent party outside of the progenitor group (an internal bias control) and the study should have been repeated by a group of conservatives in addition to the liberals that ran the study (an external bias control). If you look up the courses that the profs teach, papers they’ve published, and talks they’ve given, you can tell that they have a high propensity for liberal bias in their study. To prevent anyone from crying foul, they should have removed that bias as best as possible.

They state in the report that “…news sources should help people learn…” REALLY?
The fact that they state that Republicans were “oversampled” sounds like it was thrown in to discredit Republicans. Finally, 1,100 people is not a representative sample. Even if we figure only half the population would be capable of answering most of the questions, that’s just 0.000007% of the population. I bet I could sift through 1100 people and get whatever results I wanted.

2) if you are a liberal and watch Fox News, you will become as dumb as conservatives.
The Obama minions know conservatives won’t buy into their propaganda, but it might sway independents and Dims who are contemplating high treason. The teacher spouted the lefty talking point that Romney is a bully. The teenager returned with the fact that Obama (in the memoir he had Bill Ayers write for him) admits he bullied also. The teacher would have none of it and said that the teenager could be arrested for what he was saying and that people were arrested for slandering Bush. Both of these were falsehoods. The marxstream media was not reporting the fact that Obama admitted he was a bully..this story was only being run on fox and conservative outlets ont the web. Posted on May 24, 2012 at 10:47amRIGHTSOFBILLY…JZS loves these kinds of “surveys”. He almost falls over himself to post when they pop up.
You may recall that JZS was touting the polls and surveys that media matters told him to tout during the doomed-to-fail campaign on “the war on women” (launched again by his keepers at Media Matters). The polls and surveys he agreed to tout for Media Matters were done by Obama appointees and Planned Parenthood’s research arm…..biased much?
I guarentee you this survey will also be exposed to be bogus as was the similar one in 2010.
For instance look at the “Iran sanctions” question. There’s two possible answers both are correct…one is “to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons aspirations”..the other is “to economically isolate and damage Iran” ( one doesn‘t have to go on to say they’re tailored to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons aspirations because that would be the logical extension of the economic harm being done to Iran but it answers the question nonetheless).
And the “currently unemployed” question. You can say 8.1% that reflects the reduced workforce under Obama, or you can quote the underemployement rate that includes every unemployed person which is much higher..and these figures range in the teens. The underemployment rate is rarely-if ever- mentioned on MSNBC or any of the other news outlets other than Fox because it makes Obama look weak and ineffectual.
See how it works?

There are so many things wrong with the experimental set-up of their survey I’m not really sure how to get it into one post. Let me address your criticisms first.
While it is true that “oversampling” SHOULD reduce the margin of error, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it does. This is especially true if the calculated mean is based on two disparate populations. Also, since the number of people surveyed was finite, the number of people “watching only liberal sources” would have to be under-sampled and therefore the true value for that group underrepresented.
This study is what happens when political science professors don’t consult statisticians/mathematicians for experimental design and implementation. The researchers didn’t group the answers by questioner to look for questioner bias. Actually, they didn’t run any bias controls whatsoever. They didn’t give statistical analysis of deviations between the groups to show whether or not the difference between 1.48 and 1.84 is actually significant. Also, they asked only 3-4 questions from each category. Did they cross-reference the news sources to determine if each of those news sources covered each of those topics equally? If not, did they have a logistical temporal control? In other words, did they then follow up with questions on topics that were given equal time on each network?
In short, their study is extremely bland (take it with a grain of salt).

Although I left the social science end of my discipline back at the master’s level, my reading skill also allows me to see another design flaw here. Did you notice in the methodology section (here: http://publicmind.fdu.edu/2012/confirmed/) that they mention all participants were called on the phone at the same time of day over a stretch including 3 weekdays and 2 weekend days? They do NOT mention WHAT time that was. My guess is they’re hiding the fact that they called when they were likely to catch someone home, and that the someone they caught was more likely to be the household member more interested in the home than in politics. By no means do I intend to stereotype here, and so I’ll leave it at that. I just think traditionally there’s likely to be more republicans at home who care about values more than being informed, because the values don’t change much, and the news is unfiltered sensationalist trash most of the time. And that makes them smart and rational, not stupid and uneducated.
In any case, the lead researcher contradicts himself when he claims Fox news is less informative: that’s not what his study is designed to show or not show.

I worked for and know market research companies. Some do unbiased, wide sampling of opinions and results. But many will have many people start studies or questionaires and if anyone is not giving the answers they or “a client” want, they terminate those persons’ questionaires or throw those away later. And include only the ones that fit the outcome or image they are wanting to present.
Also like this so called study; Many use very slanted, biased questions to on purpose get the results they want.
“You don’t give the answers I want so obviously you must be stupid.”
“You give the answers I order so you must be very smart.”
An intelligent person knows there are usually no one-word or one-line answers to anything. Most subjects have many varying aspects and facts. Especially news or events.
Apparently the “study” people don’t know that. Or don’t care.
The “study” itself is obviously VERY BIASED. And ironically, STUPID.

Posted on May 24, 2012 at 5:15pmActually, Fairy-Dick’s son, does exist, but is rather mis-understood. That having been said, the results of any poll from a liberal college are greatly suspect.
Report Post »If I wanted to conduct a poll to get the results I wanted it would be extremely easy. It is done one of two usual ways: use a targeted response group (meaning ask questions of a group you already know will respond the way you want them to), and secondly, word the questions so as to get only the response you want. Have done is many times and can tell you within 5% what the totals will be.
One word of caution though! Do not try to intentionally target Liberals. They, as a group, are amongst the stupidist people that walk the Earth, as demonstrated by their electing a complete unknown to take them down the path of infamy.

Posted on May 24, 2012 at 5:31pmThis study, if I am reading it right, basically says everyone is an idiot relating to the questions being asked. Fox, 1 question answered correctly, but OOOOOO NPR almost 1.5 answered correctly. Still very poor results.
TO me, that isn’t much difference on score of 1 to 10. Plus, can Reps claim bias like most liberals… the questions were skewed for the leftie because they were asked by a leftie. LOL!!!
But seriously, if 1,000 people could only average less than 1.5 correct questions, the whole study basically proves nothing… except that almost all the people questioned were idiots. I got 8-9 of the sample questions right. Something is wrong with those questioned or I didn’t understand the results correctly.

Posted on May 24, 2012 at 7:05pmJZS – I listen to both Fox & NPR regularly. I do this because I want to get the news from both slanted perspectives. Each of these sources cover the same stories and, yes, each gives more time to one story or another. But do not deign to imply that NPR gives a balnced view (”Fox does little to give it’s audience a balanced view”) of any of it’s news stories – they do not. The stories they choose to report, the facts they choose to emphasize, the juxtapostion of their stories, the omissions in their reporting, etc. are just as biased, slanted, and designed to reinforce the liberals own preconceived ideas. All couched in soft-spoken, pseudo-intellectual, faux-eruditious, morally superior tones – to better foster the dellusional notion that NPR is a legitimately fair news organization.
I listen everyday to them (for at 3-4 hours a day) and they ARE NOT legit. They are a left leaning propaganda machine.
But I know you listen to and swear by them, so please forgive me if I’ve hurt your precious little liberal feelings.

Posted on May 24, 2012 at 7:13pmI appreciate the statistical analysis, but why bother. Did you guys take a look at the FIRST survey, PublicMind conducted in NJ in Nov. 2011? It’s a joke. FLAWED POLL, try again — and they did, this time nationwide. Some of the flawed Qs were corrected the second time around, but PublicMind never even admitted the initial survey was flawed. They don’t have a clue how to conduct a scientific survey, and any objective person can tell they are a propaganda tool for Obama. Circular file the whole thing.
First, the language used in the initial survey is clearly biased and unscientific, and I quote: “The conclusion: Sunday morning news shows do the most to help people learn about current events, while some outlets, especially Fox News, lead people to be even less informed than those who say they don’t watch any news at all.” Key words: “…especially Fox News.” They single out one news outlet from the entire survey in the first paragraph of their “analysis.” Obama tool exposed.
Look at the two Qs. in re Egypt and Syria. They are poorly phrased, because the word used is “regime,” not Mubarak or al-Assad, respectively. To this day, many Egyptians claim Mubarak’s military regime is still in control of Egypt. Ignoramuses exposed. (CONT.)

The OWS question is the greatest joke of all: “…are these protestors mostly Republican or Democrats?” Who says they have to be either? News for you PubicMind morons, they are MOSTLY self-identified Marxists and anarchists (non-Marxist commies). Their banners: “Communist Party USA,” “Democratic Socialists of America,“ ”Fight for Socialism.” Endorsed by: The American Nazi Party, Working Families Party, Service Employees International, ACORN, the New Party and the DNC. Propagandists exposed.
The OWS question is typical commie disinformation. They spread class warfare but concomitantly lull the populace into thinking we still have a Democrat vs. Republican paradigm, i.e., the proverbial “boil the frog slowly so you can keep it from jumping out of the pot.” Since even some Dims are now catching on and don’t like it, the OWS Q. was promptly deleted from the second survey.

Posted on May 24, 2012 at 9:12pmphunkejay, you’ve made an argument and given your basis for your opinion. I appreciate that.
Honestly I can’t argue with you on evidence, at least none that I can say in a few words.
People have perceptions and opinions and the judge the “neutrality” of news based on those ideas. So there’s a broad range of presentation that could be viewed as biased one way or another depending on your opinion.
But here‘s a metric I’d like you to consider. Going forward ask yourself if you ever, and I mean ever, hear a positive story about Obama on FOX. And I‘ll give you that we’ll ignore the opinion shows, which is most of FOX’s airtime (Hannity, O’Reilly, the morning people and whomever else). You know they never says anything positive about the President. Quite the opposite actually, every comment is negative. I think we agree on that. Okay, it’s a conservative station. You know that. That’s opinion.
But look at the straight news. Will you ever hear a positive thing, anything, about the President, no matter how many terrorist he kills? No, of course not. Never. That’s your view of unbiased, because your belief is the President of the United States as never done one single thing you agree with, he’s weak on terrorism or whatever.
The idea that FOX is fair and balanced and more unbiased than NPR is ludicrous, unless you think that every single thing this President has accomplished is bad.

Report Post »It’s rare, but I actually agree with you on this one: the news end of FOX has a much bigger audience than its competition because its audience contains more people who go to get informed in a way that affirms their ideological leanings.
Where we’ll still disagree is that the conservative ideology that is affirmed is more concerned with neutral facts in their context–so the affirmation of ideology in FOX is actually a good thing. CNN, and NPR which each pretend to objectivity both twist fact, and elide context in order to make the liberal ideologues in their audience and reporter/editor corps happy. That’s liberalism in a nutshell–can’t come at us straight.

You say that the most uninformed are actually conservatives who watch MSNBC. However, this is likely due to the fact that conservatives who watch MSNBC will not believe a single thing they see on that network and just watch it to point out how it is wrong. In case you didn’t notice, liberals who watch MSNBC are much more informed than conservatives who do the same. The same correlation goes for viewers of FOX. Liberals who watch are less informed than conservatives, likely because they only view it for the same reasons and won’t take anything out of it.
In the end, none of this changes that fact that FOX viewers are the least informed. And, as much as you hate to say it, people who watch the Daily Show are more informed than FOX viewers.

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 7:05pmThe problem though is their viewers keep switching channels back and forth between them, so its hard to tell if MSNBC might actually have 3 viewers and CNN 6.

Posted on May 25, 2012 at 2:19amAll news channels STINK now. Glen Beck’s show was replaced with a show called, “The Five,” and one could actually lose drop a few braincells watching the show! Same old news that’s been chewed on ALL DAY LONG, being chewed on once again!! During the day, FNC, trys to keep viewers after commerical breaks by baiting the viewers with a headline and say, coming up next! Then the story won’t be reported for an hour, lol. But, it doesn’t surprise me that it appeared MSNBC, scored the highest. After all, it is O‘Blamer’s personal campaign network! If the questions relate in any manner to something he would have a tinge of involvement in, they are on top of it! One can hear the headlines in the a.m. and know the news that will be reported for the rest of the day. Except for MSNBC, which are THE GREAT DEFENDERS, of everything Obama. They can find someone to critize for disagreeing with their assessment. Newspapers may actually make a great comeback, or at least online newspapers. That way we won’t have to listen to so called journalist try to sway us with their bias.
