Rep. Allen West (R-FL), a former Army lieutenant colonel, sent The Weekly Standard an email commenting on a recent video depicting what appears to be four U.S. Marines urinating on the corpses of Taliban terrorists. The email reads as follows [emphases added]:
I have sat back and assessed the incident with the video of our Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. I do not recall any self-righteous indignation when our Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon had their bodies dragged through Mogadishu. Neither do I recall media outrage and condemnation of our Blackwater security contractors being killed, their bodies burned, and hung from a bridge in Fallujah.
All these over-emotional pundits and armchair quarterbacks need to chill. Does anyone remember the two Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who were beheaded and gutted in Iraq?
The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.
As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.
Rep. West, who served in both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom, wrote the email in response to how some U.S. politicians and media pundits have reacted to the Marines’ video. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for example, has strongly condemned the actions depicted in the video.
“Anyone, anyone found to have participated or know about it, having engaged in such conduct, must be held fully accountable,” Hillary Clinton said yesterday, calling the incident a “potential war crime.”
The four men in the video were members of a sniper team in a unit that lost seven members in action last summer in Afghanistan, according to Newser.

But, while I haven’t been shot at by the Taliban, I have been shot at. We should not be collecting scalps, ears, fingers, teeth or photos of US urinating on THEM. WE, as Americans, are BETTER than that. Honorable in battle, humble in victory. WE are not the babrbarians, THEY are. The World is watching, and keeping score. When called to somewhere else, (anywhere else), the World will remember…and our efficacy can be affected by their perception.

Traditionally the US has held the high moral ground in principle, if not in every case in fact. West was forced out of the military based on the the American belief that our soldiers are held to a higher moral standard that those that our enemy holds. At one time that was our basis for moral authority in the world.
Not so much any more based on the posts here. Now we’re making recruitement videos for suicide bombers, something cheered on by every post here.

War is purely about getting your enemy to capitulate to your will by destroying their resources – people, equipment, and spirit. War is the failure of government policy and diplomacy. It is wrong to be outraged at a minor failure of actions by Marines compared to the systemic and epic failure of diplomacy by Clinton and Obama. They are shameful for publicly condemning this. West, the man that was run out of Iraq and the US Army for violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice and beating the hell out of a civilian Iraqi police officer. He completely disregarded the chain of command, took matters into his own hands, and ultimately tortured a completely innocent civilian because of some bad “intel” that was tantamount to hearsay he received from a low ranking intelligence specialist.
As someone who has been shot at by the Taliban, I completely disagree with Col. West. He is an embarrassment.

That’s fair but what is disturbing to me is the number of people on this site condoning these actions..
I’ve known for a long time that our Nation is coming unglued. I had the extremely unpleasant experience of sitting down with my wife to watch Jarhead several years ago during the Christmas season and I left that theater with a sense of shame for the people we have become which is only getting worse each year. My hope was always that a good honorable and noble remnant would rise from within our midst to reclaim our Founders dream even if it meant some type of realignment. Losing confidence in that scenario as well now considering the entrenched power today in our Federal system.

When you say “hearts and minds of the country” I assume you are referring to the average citizens, and not the Taliban.
It seems that the citizen(s) would either be glad that the corpse is dead, or mad that it is dead.
If “glad” is the answer, they are not going to care about this incident at all. They might even be cheering about it.
If “mad” is the answer, I doubt that this incident would make them any more hateful toward us than the actual killing itself.
If you were referring to the Taliban itself, killing them is not going to win their hearts and minds. No matter what method is used. They are still going to want to kill us back.

Maybe you could fill us in from a liberal perspective of why blanket condemnation is applied to the military over such events when teacher and police crimes are treated as isolated incidents.

It is evident that your lack of understanding regarding Military Law and Regulations leaves a lot to be desired. What LTC West did that got him into hot water with the Brass was fire his M92 Pistol into the wall next to the head of a Talidan who was seated in a chair. That action in no way violates the Geneva Convention nor the UCMJ, but it did upset a few General Officers. LTC West by so doing managed to gain information as to the location of some IED’s and where the Taliban had set up ambushes to take out his Battalion, I say more Officers should have the balls to take such action.

Our Christian government shouldn‘t follow Christ’s words, they should instead, do the opposite: support the rich, and eliminate the programs that support “the poorest among us” to quote Christ. I‘m not quite sure what a Christian government does when it doesn’t uphold the teachings of Christ, but I guess they ban gay marriage, support peeing on dead people and embrace torture against US and international law. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been a living hell for our troops. We sit in our safe and comfortable homes while these young people over there live and sleep in rubble piles and eat MREs. They go for weeks without the opportunity to have a bath and then, some Muslim animal blows their best friend into little pieces in front of them. Can you imagine having your friends brains splattered all over you? Or, how about his head blown off and landing in your lap. We Nam era vets tried to tell people about this but they did not listen.
