Update: Most of 31 U.S. Dead in Copter Crash From Navy’s SEAL Team Six — Taliban Claims Credit

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that more than 20 Navy SEALs from the unit that killed Osama bin Laden were among those lost in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

The operators from SEAL Team Six were flown by a crew of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. That’s according to one current and one former U.S. official. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because families are still being notified of the loss of their loved ones.

One source says the team was thought to include 22 SEALs, three Air Force air controllers, seven Afghan Army troops, a dog and his handler, and a civilian interpreter, plus the helicopter crew.

The sources thought this was the largest single loss of life ever for SEAL Team Six, known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.

ABC News:

A helicopter crash in Afghanistan killed 31 Americans, including as many as 25 Navy SEALs in one of the worst single-day U.S. losses of life since the war began, a senior military official told ABC News early this morning.

A total of 38 people were on board the Chinook helicopter when it crashed overnight in the eastern Afghan province of Wardak.

Initial reports indicate up to 25 Navy SEALs were on the aircraft at the time.

It was also carrying seven Afghan Special Forces troops, one interpreter, five member helicopter crew and one dog.

Troops were apparently involved in a raid at the time.

BBC News:

The helicopter was taking the personnel back to their base after an operation.

Neither the US nor Nato have confirmed the cause, but witnesses, officials and the Taliban say it was shot down.

    Bring them home NOW!
    Tough love alert:
Afghan war cannot be won b/c you cannot kill an ideology with conventional troops in conventional warfare. EVERYONE has tried from the Russians to Alexander the Great; why is it anyone here can pull some history and figure this out but our Pentagon cant? The Afghans have taken a beating from every single modern military with dilapidated weapons, guerrilla tactics, from mud huts and caves and are still standing tall. You arent fighting the Taliban, Al Qaida or a man you are fighting an ideology. Character Evey from V for Vendetta said it perfectly “We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can still change the world. I’ve witnessed first hand the power of ideas, I’ve seen people kill in the name of them, and die defending them… but you cannot kiss an idea, cannot touch it, or hold it… ideas do not bleed, they do not feel pain, they do not love…”

You wanna really fight these guys then fully unleash the might of the US military. The rules of engagement should be fire on anything that moves not ambassadors with assault rifles. Our troops are trained killers not diplomats untie their hands and let them do what they were trained to do or bring them home. NOW!! http://SavingtheRepublic.com

Unleash the power of the US Military, but we need someone in charge not afraid to do that. “Necessary force” was what police used under Guiliani to clean up NYC after Dinkins brought it to the brink of destruction. Let me say to our enemies: We have many more where these guys came from. Fathers and mothers across America are instilling in her sons and daughters the greatest patriotic spirit this nation has ever known. We don’t retreat – we reload.

I’ll admit that I was skeptical about the taking out of Bin Laden. I understand obama didn’t want to do it but that Hilary, and the team convinced him, I am sure it was strictly for re-election purposes. I mean it was like taking out an old cancer ridden one legged pitt bull and calling it glory. I no longer understand what we are doing in islamic countries and feeding them billions of dollars, nor do I understand why we are importing so many muslims and blacks to the US. Our wealth has shifted to the middle east and China. And our country is sliding into the muck. Our once wonderful America. Tech, thank you for the video link.

If your words are indicative of your thoughts then surely you must be mad. You have completely misunderstood history. No other nation in history has more consistently fought on the side of good than The United States of America. Period! The Vietnam war was fought to stop the spread of the disease known as communism. Although we could not stop brutal dictators in Vietnam and Korea from murdering millions, we did stop it from spreading and saved millions. We did that! In Afghanistan we fight the taliban which is a military force. We did not fire the first shot in the War on Terror and we take the fight to them so that you can sit in front of your computer spout off utter nonsense about a world you know nothing about. No one will come and arrest you for exercising your freedom of speech or for having a whacked out point of view. Many died preserving that right for you. You can’t fathom the sacrifices our men and women have made for you.
You are not alone in your views. You certainly didn’t think all that, “America is bad and genocidal” horse hockey up on your own. No, you hear some other delusional moron spew blame America first lunacy and you parrot because it makes you feel superior but really its small minded. Somehow, based on false knowledge and moon bat logic, you know better.
Genocide is what happens when we don’t show up!

Screw fighting them any more. Bring our troops home and task them with doing their actual job, which is defending this country. Put them on the Mexican border. Maybe then we won’t be invaded by Mexicans (including Mexican army regulars) on a regular basis.

We know what will happen if we just up and left — they’d implode into a huge civil war over there. But, why should we waste more lives and more treasure to avoid that? “You broke it, you bought it?” Well, fine. We bought it. And now we’re broke.

31 special op’s with a grenade launcher? If this is correct I want every kid home now and the military to rethink… sorry politicians, what the hell we’re doing fighting in Afghanistan?

Iraq I know was for logistics and to make sure we had troops between Iran and Eygpt, not “WMD’s”, and any d bag who doesn’t look at geography should understand where the oil is.

My point is politicians are now making money off the heroin and our kids need to be sent home now. That is the reality of the situation and the Russians can tell you the same story.

Yes Rose keep thinking of these women and children…that is understandable, but your view of terrorists is a little bit off…Our troops would never send a 12 year old child or the mother for that matter into a crowded supermarket with a bomb strapped to their chest to further the cause.. those actions have blown off many Innocent men women and children’s arms and legs ..and i don’t here you saying anything about those terrorists ..i here you condemning your next door neighbor…do i agree with all the military decisions made by this country and it’s allies? no ..i do not…but i do not or will i ever speak out against the brave soldiers of this country …do you realize that the things you have wrote on this matter would lead to harsh punishment in those countries..
Our soldiers need to be honored and respected…these brave men and women have a tough job that they do and have done….agree or dis-agree with why they are fighting all you’d like…but our troops are not the ones at fault…god bless each and everyone of them

@Rose Ellen – There is unexploded ordinance all over Afghanistan left over from when the USSR was there. The locals are injured and killed more by their own IEDs, mined fields and old Soviet mined fields than anything we do. We go to extraordinary lengths to limit and avoid altogether creating or causing innocent civilians from being hurt or killed. I know because I was there. The US combatants put themselves at tremendous risk to avoid civilian casualties. We went into Afghanistan because we had an extremely anti-American faction (Taliban) allowing another extremely anti-American faction (Al Quaeda) to plan intentional mass murder of our people so we had to change the game so they could not plan further incidents. It is just THAT simple. No lies, no wagging the dog here. Ever since we’ve been there, Al Quaeda has had to hide and have not been able to re-establish the momentum they once had to plan/execute at will. We have made it very difficult for them to operate.

Now I get it. you must have dyslexia and everytime you read about the Taliban, sneaking into a village or compound and blowing up the neighborhood, you read it backwards as if our troops had done it. GET REAL, THE MUSLIMS BLOW UP THEIR OWN MORE OFTEN THAN WE EVER WOULD, AND IF OUR TROOPS DID THAT, THE CONSTANT PROSECUTIONS, WOULDN‘T BE TURNING OUT AS ’not guilty” AS OFTEN AS THEY HAVE!!
Anytime you pay the people for the # killed in an accidental firing, you will get inflated numbers because these people are very poor, and no one is checking to see if our troops really did what they are accused of!
For 1 civilian to be killed because of our war is wrong, but how many more are killed, because we don‘t apprehend and kill the recruiter of suicide bombers or planter of IED’s? The longer a war drags on the more who will be killed, and the more the civilians turn on those whove come to deliver them. We need to win this war and get it over with!

Wait till you get occupied by a overpowering military power before you say you can’t understand suicide bombers!.Here you have young people volunterring to go kill even though they might die or lose limgsyet they live their 21st c lives to go to backward lands and drop bombs on desperately empoverished people. You apparently never understand thatwhether it was alquada fighting to liberate their homelands from our meddling via colonialism or proxy dictators which benmefiitted us but violated the rights of individuals in their homeelands. @Rose Ellen. I believe Patty Henry is right..that you are a devout muslim. But don‘t think that we don’t know that your children are raised in mosques to hate infidels, particularly Christians and Jews. In the time of King Saul, God gave Saul orders to kill every last one of your people because they kept sneaking up on Israeli camps and murdering them. God told him if he did not, that they would have trouble with them from then on. Saul didn‘t obey God’s exact orders, so hence, your people are still murdering heathens. Jesus is One with God..God’s Son, God incarnate because God is omnipresent. meaning He can be everywhere at once. God said that if you don’t believe that Jesus/Yeshua is my Son, died and rose on the third day, then you have no part with me. Jesus (pure without sin) willing sacrificed Himself upon the cross for all of us, He died and rose that third day and He still lives. He says that in Him, there is no Jew, gentile, slave or free because we are all brothers and sisters in Him. He is allowing all of this to go on until the full number of us gentiles, your people included, come into Him. That is when all of this insanity will be stopped. Your Islamic relligion is false. Your Mohammed was a false prophet. If you read the Bible..you will see. Did your Mohammed die for you? Was he raised from the dead? Does he still live. NO! Wake up muslim..help lead your people out of darkness and into the light of Christ. It won’t be all about you and 72 virgins

There is much money to be made, by blowing our kids and theirs to Hell. And that’s what the politicians, DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS, have given you. Republicans capturing both chambers of Congress, and the Presidency, will surely get more done — but it will be more of the same.

The memories of these men will not be sullied by an examination of the truth. Rather, the opposite.

The truth is, these men were marked for death, in order to cover up the farce that was the Bin Laden raid. Their deaths were inevitable. And this MUST be examined thoroughly. If not, then these men will have died for naught.

Rose-Ellen; shut the F&&& up already. You piece for Soros dung. I maybe will be taken up early to heaven for saying this about you, but you peace of no good trash needs to go into the He&& hole where you belong. If my bad memories wouldn’t get wiped when in heaven, I would definitely look forward to that day when I see you burn in He&&. Unfortunately (being a creature of flesh while I’m still here) my tears will be wiped away (i.e., all bad thoughts will be gone) when in heaven, so I won’t be able to enjoy seeing you burn. Before you tell me to turn the other cheek, it may be what the Lord wants me to, but never said I was a perfect Christian, so I will say things that most others won’t, but say I will. So sue me. Not that it is my choice (only can be yours) but some folk don‘t deserve God’s grace and I hope you never decide to accept it (again, my flesh speaking; lol). Bad day to you and may satan burn your @#$@# when you finally arrive to your new home. :)

Spew ,spew ,spew thin skinned american terrorist hypocrites! Team 6 ? Does that mean there is a god? i think alot of people think so today!
      ***
And may He have mercy on the day you go to stand before Him and give answer for “every idle word”!
You can buy all the hatred, and get paid to spew it, but all that $ will not buy a ticket for Heaven when Judgment day comes. The price is paid already, but Jesus asks us to turn from our evil ways, and the muslims in Iraq told our troops that the difference between us and them, is “the difference between life and death”, one said, and I quote, “You believe in life, and we believe in death!”
But the Bible says, “It is appointed to man, once to die and after this, the judgment.” Heb 9:27
You may not believe in a “speed limit”, but see how far that gets you once the officer has hauled you into court and you’re telling it to the judge! Same reality!

You are an awful person to think that way about ANY of God’s children. War is not for your personal vendetta and bigotry.

We the people asked these gentlemen to represent us in war. They did. They gave all they had to represent us as the best of the best. Freedom is not cheap. Most people in the world have not experienced freedom. These gentlemen, asking nothing in return, stepped up for our freedom. Thank you seems less than adequate.

Yes, let’s just annihilate ALL those people. Innocents and children, too. Great plan.

Now, why is it that we think we, as a people, hold the moral high ground?

Comments like yours make me think that, perhaps, those who hate us have a point. You have lost your humanity, sir. Check your soul at the door.

Yes. Let’s funnel our energy and emotion into a farce promoted and pimped by Democrat Perry, because we’re worked up about the loss of our SEALs. If you cannot see that for what it is, then you have drunk the kool-aid.

The Generals are accessing the situation, was it mechanical failure or was it brought down by the enemy. What difference does it make 31 are dead. Obama bring the troops home NOW before you put more notches in you dismal policies.
Impeach Obama NOW! Nothing but spineless Representatives in Washington worried about their own future. How can one socialist impeach another socialist? We are fed up with you and your policies. 2012 will not arrive soon enough!
God bless the troop and their families.
