Update: ADL Leader Still Believes Beck Is a ‘Strong Supporter of…Jewish People’

After initially using words like “horrific…offensive…unacceptable” to describe some of Glenn’s reporting on George Soros this week, the leader of the Anti-Defamation League is now clarifying his position.
Abraham Foxman sent a statement to Salon saying:
“He still believes Fox host Glenn Beck ”is a strong supporter of Israel and the Jewish people,” even in the wake of a week of conspiratorial attacks on George Soros that some saw as anti-Semitic.
“But I also believe that there are certain things he doesn’t understand, which have led him to make insensitive remarks,” Foxman continued.
Salon see the central issue this way:
The dynamic here is a tension between the ADL’s dual identities as a civil rights organization and a pro-Israel advocacy organization. This same dynamic was at play earlier this week when Foxman came to Soros’ defense but was careful to note that the ADL often disagrees with Soros, who is not a Zionist.
Earlier today Beck revealed on the radio that Foxman had recently sent him a letter apologizing for the ADL including him on a list of “celebrities who had made anti-Semitic statements.” We posted that letter and the segment from the radio show here.

Seems to me Soros has been caught with his hand in the proverbial “cookie jar” and mindlessly launches an attack on the truth. Beck continually presses his followers to do their research on the controversial subjects he puts forth, especially when the subject matter is so damning. Perhaps the ADL should take a closer look at precisely what Beck contends. Look at how when he described the breaking of various banks he found it fun and had this big grin on his face. 2) Speaking in reffrence to the fact that the current administration threw Israel under the bus.
3) Speaking to the fact that Israel is our only try friend in the region.
To say Beck is not pro-Israel is like calling the sun the moon! This had to come from Soros people themselves. Beck also pointed out how Soros turned his back on God and the Jews. It is puzzling why anybody at ADL would come out on Soros side.

Beck is a strong supporter of Israel, so of course the ADL will support him when he speaks about Israel, but when he makes outlandish comments about Soros as a 14 year old under Nazi’s in Hungary, they quickly part ways with him. This isn’t hard to understand, assuming that you are capable of holding more than one thought in your head at once. If, on the other hand, every person is either black or white, wrong or right, and you demand that the ADL either completely endorse or condemn them, then you will have problems understanding this. The mark of a facile mind is one that can hold two diametrically opposed thoughts at the same time. Perhaps the problem isn’t the ADL, but the conservatives with non-facile minds that are scratching their heads and straining to understand…

Even the quote pulled from the show by the NYT in the article about the ADL’s criticism of Beck can only be read as an attempt to defend Soros from any possible accusation for his behavior during those years. Here is the quote from the NYT as it appeared there about Soros’ experience:
‘“I am certainly not saying that George Soros enjoyed that, even had a choice. I mean, he’s 14 years old. He was surviving. So I’m not making a judgment. That’s between him and God.” He also said that “many people” would call Mr. Soros “an anti-Semite,” though “I will not.”’
So tell me, how was that outlandish? The rest of the information about Soros‘ experience in Beck’s expose was in Soros’ own words. Beck’s point was that anyone who lived such a life — who had been forced so far outside of his own cultural identity — must begin from a very different place than any of us can imagine. Beck was attempting to understand what foundation might support Soros’ later well-documented (in Soros’ own words) excursions into self-aggrandizement and messianic pursuits. Beck‘s reference to Soros’ childhood was merely an attempt at a biography that might help us believe and possibly understand why someone might strive to become what Soros himself believes he is – a demigod. As someone who has taught the anthropology and psychology of cultural alienation, I believe Beck told the story fairly well and in terms that are generally well-supported by those much more left leaning than he.
