Update: Atheists Threaten to Sue Over ‘Seven in Heaven’ Street Sign Honoring 9/11 Heros

Last month, The Blaze reported on a group of atheists who are up in arms over part of a street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, that was renamed to commemorate fallen 9/11 firefighters. The street — now called “Seven in Heaven Way” — references seven firefighters who lost their lives as part of Engine 202, Ladder 101 and Battalion 32. Now, the group — NYC Atheists — is discussing a potential lawsuit against the city.
According to an The Daily News, Ken Bronstein, the head of NYC Atheists, said:
“We are not against honoring anyone who died or served on 9/11. What we‘re against is the use of the word ’heaven,’ which is a religious concept.
The Founding Fathers set up separation of church and state. We need to draw a line in the sand. This is not a Christian nation. This is a republic.”
The families of 9/11 victims are less than pleased with the atheists’ reaction. Catherine O’Mara, whose son-in-law Brian Cannizzaro is an honoree on the sign, said:
“It’s disgusting and horrible. This means everything to the women who lost their husbands.”
Apparently, the group believes it can “show injury — and the impact of what the city is doing.” Their First Amendment case would argue that the public nature of the sign is a violation of the separation of church and state clause. In response to their claims, New York Magazine’s DailyIntel blog called them “jerky” and quipped:
Because when people say a 9/11 first responder is “in heaven” they are specifically referring to the walled-in sky compound guarded by St. Peter. Not, as you might have guessed, a generic non-religious wish that a person who died running into a towering inferno to rescue hundreds of innocent people might somehow now be at peace.
So far, New York City is sticking to its guns and not caving to the atheists’ removal demands. Lawyers are lining up to offer the city pro-bono representation, with experts claiming that the atheists’ arguments are “far-fetched.” Outlandish claims, though, have been a fixture in many past court battles. Thus, this case very well could make its way into a courtroom.

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 10:59pmIf Christians have faith in God couldn’t you say atheists have faith there is no God. That would be a belief that there is no after life. A theory is defined as faith or a belief. Can not be proven scientifiicly. So science can not prove there is or is’nt a God so by definition Atheism is a religion.

so do I.
Where do you want to start in the shoot out of quotes from the founding fathers?
I’ll blow your head off with the ENTIRE CONSTITUTION and the 1st and 14th Amendment.
But if you want to dip into personal writings by the founders or even the Declaration I encourage you to fire back, headless.
America is not founded on ANY religion.
Period.
Report Post »scguitar
Posted on July 6, 2011 at 10:52pmwhat does the 14th amendment have to do with this? It does not put the establishment clause onto the state and here is why:
Religion is not mentioned in the amendment because there was no religious issue during the civil war. Plus, shortly after the passage of the 14th, the blaine amendment was introduced to put the establishment clause onto states! Although the amendment failed, both supporters and opposers of the amendment recognized that the 14th amendment did not apply the establishment clause to the states, because it was not the original intent of the amendment. You loony liberals have twisted it so badly

Report Post »Separation of church and state is not in the constitution ANYWHERE it is found in a personal letter from Tomas Jefferson. So the writings by our founders are very relevant here because the atheists use Tomas Jefferson’s personal writings to destroy this christian nation and want to give us freedom FROM religion and in doing so undermine every thing our founders wanted to see us become.

Report Post »You completely miss the point. Why am I not surprised given the vitriol in your writings. The founders, much to the chagrin of today’s anti-founders, were aware of the plight of the original colonists and their desire to leave England for freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. For that reason the founders had no desire to form a state religion, which is a separate issue from whether or not they were religious. Lone Ranger was pointing out what many are trying to sweep under the carpet today …….. that the founders were religious and many were, in fact, Christian.

Posted on July 7, 2011 at 11:16pmAmerica was founded by religious people. Of that there is no argument. If athiests want to live in the U.S. they have their rights..but why can’t they let Christians live peacefully also. 7 in Heaven isn’t hurting anyone and truthfully? how many atheists have even driven on the street to be ‘offended’? They need a life. Live and let live. I’ll leave them alone, I expect the same. Frankly a lot of what athiests do offend me but I do stand by the meaning of live and let live. If something offends me I just look the other way. So should everyone else, it would make it a lot easier in this life.

“If I could have entertained the slightest apprehension that the Constitution framed by the Convention, where I had the honor to preside, might possibly endanger the religious rights of any ecclesiastical society, certainly I would never have placed my signature on it.” — George Washington, May 10, 1789
“Whoever is an avowed enemy of God, I scruple not [would not hesitate] to call him an enemy to his country.” — John Witherspooon
“It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists [pluralism], but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” — Patrick Henry
“The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil Constitutions and laws….All the miseries and evil which men suffer from vice, crime, ambitions, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.” Noah Webster
I got a million of ‘em.
If these un-American, bigoted freaks want to live in a country without religion, perhaps they should move to an atheist nation, like Vietnam, or North Korea or China or Laos.
Let’s see how their freedoms to file lawsuits and speak out against the government would be tolerated there.

Posted on July 7, 2011 at 11:38amThere is ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE in the Constitution the mention of Separation of Church and state. The line reads Congress shall make no laws respecting the establishment of a religion over another, 1) Congress did not establish a state religion by allowing a street sign to remain. 2) The Constitution also states that Congress can not prohibit the free exercise of religion, now that is very very clear. The idea of Separation of Church and state was just that, an idea, it was presented in the Federalist papers and the intent was to avoid having a Theocracy in this country where one would be forced to follow a certain religion. NO ONE is being force to do anything by having this sign up. I can’t begin to understand how this lawsuit could even go through, does anyone actually have any reading comprhension in this country?????

Posted on July 7, 2011 at 12:10pmNo, no, no…the founders DID NOT put separation of church and state in the Constitution. It comes from a letter written by Th. Jefferson to the Danberry Baptist Church, assuring them that the Federal Gov. was not going to announce an official national religion (thats where the wall of separation comes in). It also assured them that people from all Christian sects are welcome and encuraged to particapate in Government.

THE STATE is prohibited from engaging in funding, favoring, advocating, supporting, or requiring the practice of ANY particular religion or faith tradition over any other religion or faith tradition in order to protect the religious FREEDOM of ANY AND ALL of the American People. WE remain FREE because the STATE is bound by the limitations WE impose opon it. EACH ONE OF US is entitled under the law to EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW. Posted on July 7, 2011 at 11:44amAs an Atheist I think life has great meaning and wonder. I am not sure why all Christians believe wonder and meaning has to come from God or that Atheists can not have meaning in their life. I am against the street sign being taken down, but I don’t believe in God. I believe in honoring those who lost their lives and respecting their beliefs. The Atheists of New York are probably activist because they were pushed beyond a reasonable point by someone who was religious. I have been damned to hell so many times and told I am immoral more times than I can count, yet I frequently find myself taking a higher moral ground than my Christian friends, especially when they find it odd that I can happily go to a church function with them and not be at all offended or rip on their belief system all the while being damned to hell by the lot of them. We all make judgements in life based on what we are taught and what evidence there is and how we perceive it. I have come to a different conclusion than most Christians concerning god, why get angry about it. Our differences are what makes this country great.

(Some exceptions, I‘ve seen very tolerant atheists who don’t try to force their beliefs,or lack thereof, on others) Maybe they should start living up to their name and stop caring about God!! They are obssessed with God! You can’t put up a cross or religious sign or name a street with “Heaven” without them jumping on it. If they truly were atheists they wouldn’t care either way. Some people believe in aliens and put up giant alien heads and UFO signs – I don‘t believe in aliens but I’m not going to sue these folks and follow them around trying to “enlighten” them.
Now I would imagine lots of atheists DO believe in aliens, but that’s another topic…
A lot of atheists need to read “The Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of United States” and learn a few things. We have irrefutable Judeo-Christian roots, some folks can’t deal with that and it continually pains and troubles them to their core.
