PHOENIX (The Blaze/AP) — Arizona’s governor has signed a bill designating the Colt Single-Action Army revolver as the state’s first official firearm.
Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill without comment on Thursday. There was speculation at one point that she might veto the bill.
Opponents say it was inappropriate to give the official designation to an out-of-state company’s commercial product. Colt is based in Connecticut.
Democratic Rep. Albert Hale also says the gun was an instrument of destruction that was used against Native Americans.
KPHO-TV reports on the detractors:
The bill had caused some controversy in the state House after a Navajo legislator called it an instrument of destruction.
Democratic Rep. Albert Hale of Window Rock implored fellow lawmakers to respect Native Americans who lived in what is now Arizona before it became a U.S. territory and later a state.
[...]
“Another day, another waste of taxpayers’ time and money at the state capitol. My family owns guns, and I’m embarrassed that state government chose to spend hours on a state gun — even brought it back on reconsideration after it was defeated — instead of changing one word in statute to ensure 20,000 Arizonans‘ jobless aid isn’t cut off during tough times,” said House Minority Whip Anna Tovar.
“This is absolutely ridiculous and offensive, and it‘s even more humiliating that the weapon they chose isn’t even manufactured in Arizona. It’s time for a change,” she said.
Legislative supporters, however, argued that the designation was appropriate because the revolver was widely used during Arizona’s territorial days.

Posted on April 29, 2011 at 12:05pmTo the Sovereign Navajo Nation (who truly believe they are a country within a country). What do you care what AZ does? If you made the tomahawk an emblem in your reservation… which you brandish in your religious ceremonies, in which, you dance and act as if you are scalping human beings and used to kill thousands…. I could care less. As you join the crazy Marxists and Revolutionaries in La Raza and MeCha to reclaim AZTLAN and try to hang to yoke of political correctness and white guilt on the necks of the innocent citizens of this State… please know that if you decide to get violent, there is a possibility that the Colt single action may find its way back into service… 1850s style.

I wonder if LaRaza or the illigals know our State Song .. Sure they

Posted on April 29, 2011 at 11:15amYou people criticizing Brewer need to take a minute, and look at what she’s done so far. She‘s gotten under Obama’s skin enough to sick his thug attporney General on the whole state with two, count em, two lawsuits, not to mention that the NLRB is suing us too. Brewer vetoed the insurance bill because it was poorly written. Unfortunately, we’ve seen a few badly written bills, that had great principals behind them. Take it easy on Jan. She’s only got the entire weight of the Federal Government on her back. Could you handle it?

Posted on April 29, 2011 at 10:47amJust following the lead set by Utah. There is some good that comes from it, as it embraces the states firm standing of the 2nd Amendment. Sadly with other laws “politics” play too much of a role. Both the right and left plays the game and neither side wins. Its time for common sense to start running the show again and not the politics.
As for state guns I think its a great idea, even through no needed. There’s much more important business to take care of at the time.

Posted on April 29, 2011 at 11:07amProducing simple and beautiful weaponry from simple/beautiful Hartford Connecticut, the Colt company is singularly responsible for winning the war between the states, and then for taming the rugged aboriginal American West. Check out the new .45 ACP Rail Gun, that replaces their 1911A series as my favorite pistol.
Report Post »But for an impressive State revolver, Arizona should have chosen the excellent Ruger Alaskan .454 Casull, which is easier to conceal than the Colt Army, and can be speed loaded in less than 1 second.

I bet your fishing stories are just as colorful. The Colt SAA in 45 LC with a 4 and 5/8 inch barrel is the gun when it comes to the relics of the past. Revolvers are all a thing of the past.

Posted on April 29, 2011 at 11:42amThe colt Revolver is Not a gun of the past. One can load it and leave it stored forever without the clip spring fatiguing. Very rarely jams or misfires..not like autos. The fastest reload always was a second gun anyway. Chambered in .357 makes it a very, very lethal weapon. 95% of all gun fights are 7-12 feet and 3 shots. The US army is changing it’s policy in the mideast to rifle squads vs spraying squads because the kill ratio vs bullets is ridiculous at 50,000 bullets per!

Revolvers are a thing of the past. Todays revolver isn’t much different than what the Earps carried. No army issues revolvers. Guns need to be carried, not left loaded somewhere else.

Personal attacks usually take place when one side is unfamiliar with the truth. You gave no rebuttal of my points but made a personal attack. If revolvers are state of the art then what police department still issues them?
While I own a number of revolvers I relegate them to sport shooting or hunting use. Like Brewer did, they are noted for their historic place.. Oh and don’t let better knowledge of a subject be confused for arrogance.

Your comedy act is just that. No agency issues revolvers because they want to win a gunfight, not see how fast they get off the first shot. Funny how some people live in the past and won’t accept the truth. While you are at it how many modern handgun matches like IPSC or IDPA are won with SAAs?
While Colt SAAs are very good guns nobody who wants to win a fight carries one.
