Update: Boehner Says No to Obama Speech, Asks Him to Reschedule

House Speaker John Boehner urged President Barack Obama to delay his address to a joint session of Congress by one day Wednesday, hours after the speech's date was announced. (AP File Photo)

House Speaker John Boehner has reportedly denied President Barack Obama’s request to address a joint session of Congress next Wednesday, the same night as the Republican presidential debate, instead asking Obama reschedule for the following day.

In a written response to the president’s request just hours after the date was announced, the Ohio Republican speaker said there would not be enough time Wednesday evening for Congress to pass a resolution required to receive the president, or for a security check of the House chamber.

A portion of Boehner’s letter is below:

As you know, the House of Representatives and Senate are each required to adopt a Concurrent Resolution to allow for a Joint Session of Congress to receive the President. And as the Majority Leader announced more than a month ago, the House will not be in session until Wednesday, September 7, with votes at 6:30 that evening. With the significant amount of time – typically more than three hours – that is required to allow for a security sweep of the House Chamber before receiving a President, it is my recommendation that your address be held on the following evening, when we can ensure there will be no parliamentary or logistical impediments that might detract from your remarks. As such, on behalf of the bipartisan leadership and membership of both the House and Senate, I respectfully invite you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Thursday, September 8, 2011 in the House Chamber, at a time that works best for your schedule. We look forward to hearing your ideas and working together to solve America’s jobs crisis.

Thursday, Sept. 8 is the date of the opening game of the National Football League’s regular season.

According to CNN, a Democratic source said the White House provided little advance notice before publicly requesting the Sept. 7 date. One Republican source told the network they were not consulted at all.

“Arranging a joint session of Congress isn’t as simple as snapping our fingers,” a senior GOP aide told CNN.

Administration officials said Boehner’s office was consulted about the date ahead of time and no objection was raised, something Boehner’s spokesman denied.

Media outlets have reported that the speaker‘s move to rebuff the president’s request for a joint session of Congress is essentially unprecedented.

Obama did this intentionally. He did not follow protocol, and leaked it to the news. He knew the Republicans would object. He changes his schedule to accomodate the Republicans. He gives his speech the following day, and talks about how important job creation is and how he bends over backwards for the Republicans, and they will never compromise even about his scheduled speech. Bad republican. It is their fault. yada yada yada.

This is just another setup created to portray the Rep/Tea Party as the bad guys

Obama delays this “speech” until long after his vacation, then schedules in in direct conflict with the Republican debate, knowing he will be asked to move it. Then he moves the date, accommodating the Republicans – compromising! He’ll use this against them in time, of course.

No one cares what you have to say, Obama! It’s going to be nothing more than you spouting off about “investments” in infrastructure, roads and bridges, blah, blah, blah….It’s the same old crap – tax and spend money we don’t have!

We‘re not buying anything you’re selling, Mr. O!

We are in this mess because, notwithstanding the situation the country was in, Obummer, Emanuel, and the rest of his sycophants saw a crisis that had to be taken advantage of. Screw the well-being of the nation, there were leftist dreams that had to be rammed down the American people’s throats first.

Gotta make those “nasty, rich Republicans” look bad to his Far Left base. You know, the Far Left/Anarchy crowd who are planning these “rallies.riots/revolutions” in September and October. Gotta stir up some more potential trouble. I’ll be watching the New York Times for comments from these wackos which I think he is purposely inflaming. Mean spirited? Because Obama wants to address the nation in a joint session? And because he does a mean spirited thing by trying to schedule it during the Republican debate? Please. He wants a joint session of Congress to make it seem like a huge deal– so that his little political trick of pre-empting the Republican debate will not fall flat on its face. A joint session means big press– he might not get that if he just gives another lame speech from the White House. This is just a cheap trick by Obama.

There is no cry for a joint session for this. What is the big deal? It is another Obama speech, and one that he should have made a long time ago.

Nothing about this speech requires a joint session of Congress. It is not addressing any national security issue, it is not a SOTU address…it is a big pile of nothing. Obama can address the nation from the White House, like all other Presidents. Joint session…what a joke.
