Update: California Governor Signs Bill that Mandates Gay History Lessons in Public Schools

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (The Blaze/AP) — Earlier this month, The Blaze first reported on a controversial California bill that would require the state’s public schools to teach children lessons about gay and lesbian history. On Wednesday, Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill, making California the first state in the nation to add mandatory lessons of this type to social studies curriculum.

Brown, a Democrat, signed the landmark bill requiring public schools to include the contributions of people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender in social studies curriculum. The Democratic-majority Legislature had passed the bill last week on a largely party-line vote. KCRA-TV has more:

“History should be honest,” the governor said in a statement Thursday. “This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books.”

The bill has drawn criticism from some churches and conservative groups that argue such instruction would expose students to a subject that some parents find objectionable.

Republican lawmakers who opposed the bill had called it a well-intentioned but ill-conceived bill. Some raised concerns that it would indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality.

State Sen. Mark Leno, a Democrat from San Francisco and the bill’s author, hailed the bill signing as a step toward teaching tolerance. Supporters say the bill will teach students to be more accepting of gays and lesbians in light of the bullying that happens to gay students.

“Today we are making history in California by ensuring that our textbooks and instructional materials no longer exclude the contributions of LGBT Americans,” Leno said in a statement.

California law already requires schools to teach about women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, entrepreneurs, Asian Americans, European Americans, American Indians and labor. The Legislature over the years also has prescribed specific lessons about the Irish potato famine and the Holocaust, among other topics.

The new law, SB48, requires the California Board of Education and local school districts to adopt textbooks and other teaching materials that cover the contributions and roles of sexual minorities, as soon as the 2013-2014 school year. That said, the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the state’s budget crisis has delayed new book purchases until at least 2015.

Gays and lesbians aren’t the only ones being added to California curriculum; individuals with disabilities will also be covered during classroom instruction. The legislation leaves it to local school boards to decide how to implement the requirement. It does not specify a grade level for the instruction to begin.

Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, a conservative family group, said under the new law parents will have no choice but to take their children out of public school and homeschool them to avoid what he said was “immoral indoctrination.” The new law applies only to public schools, not private schools or families who homeschool.

“Jerry Brown has trampled the parental rights of the overwhelming majority of California fathers and mothers who don’t want their children to be sexually brainwashed at school,” Thomasson said. “This new law will prohibit textbooks and teachers from telling children the facts that homosexuality is neither healthy nor biological.”

Sen. Sharon Runner, R-Lancaster (Los Angeles County), who serves as the vice chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Education, also said:

“If children in other countries are learning math and science, and American children are learning about the private lives of historical figures, how will our students compete for jobs in the global economy?”

The bill was supported by gay rights organizations including Equality California and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. Teacher groups also said the bill would help students prepare for a diverse and evolving society.

“There is no room for discrimination of any kind in our classrooms, our communities or our state,” said Dean Vogel, president of the California Teachers Association.

    If a gay individual does something worthy of being in the history books, then fine, but to be written into the history books just for being gay is assinine. I’d be snagging my kids out of those schools. If I had the means to home-school I would in a heartbeat. Thank God I don’t live in Cali.

      Sure …and what about a course in pedophiles (doesn’t even need to include homosexuals) or criminals (ex. Robert Stroud “Bird Man of Alcatraz” author Diseases of Birds) etc. (you got the point) that have made worthwhile contributions to society ??? …I’m sure you can find them. Why not specific courses in these. Or Italian-Americans (I’m Italian-American and want Italian-Americans to have their own course.

      You see, I’m an American, and I’m not supposed to notice those differences in color, religion, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc., we are all equal under the law (at least that’s what the used to teach) but you keep sticking the differences in my face !!! I resent that !!!

    This is USA Exceptional History, which is a truly fascinating set of stories. I am not frightened by American diversity, so I think this is fine.

    No big deal, and if parents want their gay kids cured, we can just let Gay counselors describe how Prayers worked out for them after school.

      We moved back to California from Indiana. In Indiana, our two kids had four years of Catholic education and then two years of small town public schools. Then we started home schooling because they were bored.. They wanted to try public school here. The first day here, our son took a test about who the Governor(Arnold), Senators, Representatives and other state leaders were. He got more right than the kids who already lived here did. It wasn’t long until it was home school again. They were bored again. Because of “No Child Left Behind” and other progressive “ideas” not much is being taught in public schools these days. So this new legislation is just more of the same.

      My other thought is that doesn’t California have more pressing problems than this?

      Presently, I am FORCED to live in California- those pesky forks, if only I didn’t have to eat. That said- I AM SO HAPPY WE ARE BROKE (the state of Calf., I mean) The program won’t start until 2013-2014 school year. Plus, they may not be able to buy the books until 2015! We will be relocated out here way before then- whew…

      Now to be serious. Are you kidding me? California is trying to do away with homework- making it count for only 10% of the child’s grade. (Not fair to students who do not have a parent at home that will make him/her do the homework) Further, just heard the other day that some teachers want to get rid of writing too because everything is typed these days, whats the point of learning manually write?

      Kids to day do not know America’s history. I would argue many ADULTS today do not know America’s history. BUT- all over the country, in various states, kids are being forced to learn Mexico’s history, kids are being forced to learn Islamic history. Kids are being forced to learn about going green and conservation. AND NOW THIS?! Seriously, if some gay/lesbian person did something remarkable (inventor, mathematician, writer, or what ever) They should be mentioned in text books for what they accomplished not for who they slept with. If they do this, then are they going to add the sexual preference of each and every remarkable person from history. Will it follow his/her surname, be his/her title?       Good, I am all for gay history lessons in public schools. Teach kids what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah when they turned to homosexuality. Teach then about Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome. Show them that anytime a nation, superpower, or civilization turns to homosexuality, they crumble. Show them moder history, and let them see that gays have freightening high percentage of AIDS, other STDs, commit suicide at alarming high rates, are way more likely to assault and molest children, have very high alcohol and drug abuse rates…. Give them the truth, it may help them.

      I‘m from Caifornia and don’t include all of us here in this. Sometimes I wish San Francisco would fall off into the ocean. But then there are true conservatives there too. Its embarrassing to say I live here, even if I live in the northern end of the state. I wish we could start another state up here and divide. Sacramento doesn’t reflect our views and way of life. Draw the line somewhere north of the Bay Area and Interstate 80 and start a new state!

      Momprayn-not only did Wyatt discover the ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah, God also led him to find the Ark of the Covenant, Mount Sinai, Noah’s Ark, and The Red Sea Crossing. Video, images of the ark of the covenant have been taken from the website for some reason, but there are websites out there that still have it. Jesus’ blood is on the mercy seat. Wyatt had it analyzed and it was still living..truly amazing, just beautiful.

      I am sure there were people in history that did many different types of sexual activities. I doubt the massive sick activities see today just started in the last few years. So when will California teach how these people and their sex leanings affected history? Will the have a history lesson on how sex with sheep helped California become independent from Mexico? Or how molesting children helped some in California history overcome the gold rush? I wounder if the term “The Golden State” was first used in California history to describe those who enjoyed being pissed on. Only a rewrite of history will tell.

    what actually is gay history? i didn’t know there was any history. are you going to invite in bachelors and old maids, perhaps they were gay but perhaps they lived their life for the lord, nothing to do with sexuality. you will need to bring in the bible to quote scripture denouncing gays so the discussion is balanced. also have some gay with full blown aids, you know all those open sores on their bodies and let the children know some of the consequences of lying down with the same sex.

    Why do people need to be identified by what their sexual preferences are anyway? In history classes, shouldn’t historical figures just be identified by their contribution to history? Maybe George Washington had a thing for women with huge breasts, should he be identified as the father of our country or as the president who loved massive mammaries?

    The exodus from public schools will be greater. Problem? The average family is forced to participate. Answer – explain to your children that America is over-run with people that would like to see it fail.

    And just why can we not teach history without reference to ones sexual oriantation? This does not belong in the schools. I’ll teach my children about homosexuallity when and where I think appropreate. That is my job. The schools job is to teach them to read, write, math, history and govt. not sex education and social justic.

    Ok, great. Our kids cannot spell, read above an 8th grade level, have not been taught about our founders, cannot balance a check book, etc. But they will know gay history.

      Agreed. A sad number know shockingly little about big historical events in American, and world history. It’s obvious that you can only teach so much (were teachers actually teaching these days… to those of you who are dedicated to actually improving our kids’ minds, I salute you) of any given subject in any given period. So the actual history gets diluted to the point of being nothing with such inclusiveness.

      Honestly, if the gay community really wanted equality and integration, it wouldn’t matter if a person in history were gay or not. Just let them be who the are, right? Oh, but only if you’re gay.
