ST. LOUIS (AP) — The child known as Baby Joseph has left St. Louis to return home to Canada.
Fifteen-month-old Joseph Maraachli (Muh-RAHSH’-lee) left Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center in St. Louis on Thursday and flew with his family to their home in Ontario, exactly one month after the child received a tracheotomy aimed at extending his life.
Joseph suffers from the progressive neurological disease Leigh Syndrome. Doctors in Canada refused to perform the tracheotomy, saying it was futile because the child’s disease is terminal, and an Ontario court decided doctors could remove the child’s breathing tube.
His family sought help from American hospitals, and Cardinal Glennon agreed to treat Joseph.
The hospital said the tracheotomy was a success and Joseph has been breathing without a ventilator for more than a week.

Posted on April 21, 2011 at 3:23pmHOW MUCH does a friggin tracheotomy cost anyway? I am SURE that the Canadian hospital already profited from the care they gave the baby up until they made the death panel decision.

Posted on April 21, 2011 at 5:05pmWhat Fox doesn’t reveal is that the baby has been in he hospital since birth, approx 9 months. He was given the best treatment at no cost to the parents. The cost exceeded well over a million dollars. I suspect in the USA the insurance company would have stop payment after the first month, unless the parents came up with the cash. Of course Fox does not tell you this, nor does Fox ever tell you about the horror stories of patients here being refused treatment. We are far from perfect. Instead of constantly criticizing the Canadian system, maybe we should focus on how to make ours better.

Posted on April 21, 2011 at 12:04pmZorro, my niece was a premee born by Cesarean at less than 6 months weighing two pounds, and both the baby & mother had an infection.(Mothers water had leaked) The doctors tried to talk my sister in law into aborting the baby, and told her the baby had less than a 10% chance to live. Today my niece is happy, healthy married 30 year old with her own kids. Miracles DO happen every day.

Posted on April 21, 2011 at 4:53pmActually there are quite a few seeking medical treatment in Canada from all over the world. Of course they have to pay as they are not citizens. The medical system is top rate and in many ways is superior in Heart Disease treatment. The point is mute as any wealthy person can travel the world for the best care if they can afford it. The key is access for the general population. I run my own business and I purchase very costly HMO cover for my emloyees. The average cost for me is $8,000 per employee. The choices are limited and the costs are sky rocketing annually. The treatment is subpar and in many cases my employees do not even see doctors, but PA’s. I will eventually have to let people go or not give raises to absorb the costs. This type of system makes us less competitive with other countries. My software company will one day consider moving to Canada. The other plus is that Canada has a Corporate tax about half ours. Those are the facts and not the spin.

Posted on April 21, 2011 at 8:16pmEveryone get a grip fo one moment and look at the real picture here. There must be millions of children suffering in the USA and around the world this very second in need of medical intervention. Why did this Priest “ Father Pavone” swoop in and rescue this child from the mean, bloodthirsty Canadians, who have zero regard for human life. Those darn Canadians always causing trouble around the world. Maybe we should invade them and stop the madness. Or maybe just maybe something else is at play here. Gee Father Pavone sure likes to have his photo moments and possible 15min of fame. But there is more to this story, a lot more and it has nothing to do with giving this child a Trach and a lot to do with healthcare reform and the election. Some things are just too blatantly obvious. Look behind the headlines and as beck would say watch what the other hand is doing.

Not unless your private insurance company decides he is to expensive to continue care. How often have you had to fight to get the treatment that actually help your sons and not just the ones that your insurance says they will pay for.( Please be honest about this) Just wait if the Repuglys get their way you and your sons will be just as expendable as the poor people on medicare or medicade because the cost will be to much for even you to bear (bare?). Now when they go back to Canada they might very well be in danger of losing everything they own because of the cost of the medical care they recieved here in the US. Someone has to pay for it.

Posted on April 21, 2011 at 11:28amAnd why does this story matter? To spread the health insurance corporate propaganda. First the facts, this child has only a few months to live, no matter what was done here. As usual Fox is a shill for the insurance monopoly and selectively uses a dying child to hammer their agenda. People in America are dying everday because they cannot afford insurance and it is the insurance companies that are the death panels in the USA. Go to the WHO website and see where we rate as a nation in health access and outcomes. It really is pathetic. We do not even rate with the industrialized countries…by the way they all have universal access. Obamacare is not universal access by any stretch. Don’t get duped by Fox, they are also an agenda driven media, not much different than MSNBC and the rest. CAnada has a balanced budget and a strong currency, because they took bold steps to bring down the cost of healthcare and other entitlements. We are a mess. And that is the truth. Fox should be ashamed for exploiting this this child for a political point.

Posted on April 21, 2011 at 3:16pmI agree with Zorro6821, we can learn alot from our Canadian friends to the north. Currently, Canada allows Canadian oil companies to drill, mine and refine oil in their own country, which has led to a strong Canadian dollar — amazing given Canada’s high environmental standards. Additionally, Canada does not have a death tax, so their citizens have more money available for discretionary spending. Aside from choosing life or death for their citizens, Canada is pretty cool!
